Microsoft in talks to buy TikTok

    Posted: 31 Jul 2020 12:01 PM PDT

TikTok's parent company is looking to sell Tik Tok to a US based company.

This would only be for operations in the US, but that is still huge.

Amazon promised to spend its profit amid pandemic, but ended up with record earnings anyway

    Posted: 31 Jul 2020 06:16 AM PDT

    https://www.marketwatch.com/story/amazon-promised-to-spend-all-its-profit-but-pandemic-sales-grew-too-fast-and-it-still-earned-billions-2020-07-30

Amazon.com Inc. Chief Executive Jeff Bezos promised to spend expected profits amid a huge boost in sales related to the COVID-19 pandemic, but sales grew so fast that he ended up with record earnings instead.

Three months ago, Bezos said that he expected to spend billions in expected operating profit that is flooding in as Americans sheltered-in-place due to the coronavirus pandemic purchase more goods online and businesses spend more on cloud computing to support workers stuck at home. "If you're a shareowner in Amazon, you may want to take a seat, because we're not thinking small," Bezos said in May.

Wash rule clarification on selling long term holding and rebuying it in less than 30 days to hold for long term.

    Posted: 31 Jul 2020 01:04 PM PDT

Here is the situation: - holding Shopify for over a year, sold all position last month - rebought Shopify in about 3 to 4 days right after seeking them - planning to hold this again for another year.

So to pay long term taxes on these new shares of Shopify do I keep them for 12 months or 13 months?

"Past performance does not guarantee future returns"

    Posted: 31 Jul 2020 09:07 AM PDT

What exactly does this mean? How far does it go? Its pretty obvious that a fund or stock that has done well for the past three years is not guaranteed to do well for the next three. But an ETF that has had decent returns for the past 20 years certainly has a good chance of doing well in the future, right?

This phrase is just so confusing because nothing in the stock market is guaranteed, and returns certainly aren't. But does this "golden rule" also mean that looking at historic charts are useless? The same people that plug this rule will also talk about historic returns when comparing funds and stocks.

I'm just confused about what exactly the rule entails. If anyone can shed some light, I'd greatly appreciate it!

What's a stock category you've thought about diving into based on your own theories of the future?

    Posted: 31 Jul 2020 03:07 PM PDT

Spill your secrets if you're comfortable with it lol.

Many ideas were seen as laughable at their inception but dominate the market today. What do you think is next, based on your own hunch?

Mine are these, in no order:

    1. Synthetic diamonds and diamond semiconductors
    2. Water desalination systems
    3. VR and anything associated with it

TradingView and StockCharts chart accuracy problems?

    Posted: 31 Jul 2020 06:12 PM PDT

    Hi Guys,

Has anyone noticed that some charts offered online aren't consistent with each other in terms of their highs and lows? This isn't an isolated incident, but I'm looking at FCX on 28 Aug and 21 Sep 2018 are just different in between services. For example on those dates, TradingView and StockCharts has the highs listed as 14.58 and 14.52 respectively, but Yahoo, NASDAQ, and my broker CIBC has it at 14.96 and 14.90. What is going on here? Tradingview is one of the best free chart services, but if it isn't accurate where else am I going to go? This is very frustrating.

Is there any point holding QQQ if you already own AAPL, AMZN, MSFT?

    Posted: 31 Jul 2020 10:50 AM PDT

I am planning on holding AMZN, AAPL, MSFT for 25+ years. They're all split evenly with QQQ.

Is there any point holding QQQ? Should also state that I only have these stocks so there is ZERO industry diversification.

Should I liquidate QQQ and put it in the above three and /or a diff industry or even VOO?

    Investment period: 25+ years

Should I just cut my losses with BA?

    Posted: 31 Jul 2020 11:41 AM PDT

New to the stock market here. Teenager.

As a grad gift, my dad gave me some money to invest in the stock market. I don't do anything crazy just some simple orders once every two weeks or so. Sometimes my dad will tell me to buy something and since it's his money I go along. He told me to buy BA, I told him I didn't want to since it'll be a while till airports and airlines actually get back on their feet (idek if this is right but anyway I just didn't want to buy BA). But he insisted and on June 29th, I fulfilled his order of 10 shares of BA at ~$192 each on my brokerage account. Since then it's just getting lower and lower. Then he opened his own brokerage account and bought his own 10 shares of BA and now I'm stuck with BA shares I never really wanted. I could just hold them long until someday it passes my buying price but I'm also feeling impatient. I just don't know what to do. I just hate seeing how much money I'm losing because I didn't follow my gut.

Edit: Will be holding long but if y'all have any advice for a beginner trader or advice with BA please don't hesitate!

Looking to get into the market, any tips?

    Posted: 31 Jul 2020 02:33 PM PDT

I don't have a ton of money to play with (thinking ≈ 300) but I'd like to have some diversity between short and long term options. Is it smarter to use stocks, or smarter to just put into an IRA? Thanks for any advice

    Narrowing it down?

    Posted: 31 Jul 2020 01:21 PM PDT

I'm looking to get into day trading and have been doing some research and am starting to set myself up in TOS to start watching some indices, sectors, stocks and just observe and learn.

I think first thing I need to do is be able to narrow down this enormous universe into something more digestible.

Was hoping some of you more experienced guys could share the scanners you use along with an explanation of how you use them to narrow things down and find some opportunities?

Or point me to resources where I can learn to do this myself?

Any help at all I'd really appreciate!!

How can there be a simultaneous interest in Gold, Equities and Bonds?

    Posted: 31 Jul 2020 09:24 AM PDT

I know this isn't related to just the stock market unless you consider GDX but I have a thought time wrapping my mind around this one. Presumably the current thesis based on price action is that companies will benefit from a lower dollar and liquidity being injected into the system causing a concern in the US dollar. This then leads to gold and probably bitcoin to rising. But now where do bonds and utilities fit in this equation? Shouldn't this concern with inflation be causing bond prices to go down? Really appreciate any insight!

Watchlist 7/31 A Choppy End to a Choppy Month

    Posted: 31 Jul 2020 04:12 AM PDT

    Market Notes:

Yesterday after more bad jobless claim number the market opened down and sunk lower at the open. Markets eventually turned around and closed mixed and close to flat.

$RGD (tsxv) Reunion Gold YUGE catchup trade potential

    Posted: 31 Jul 2020 09:14 AM PDT

$RGD Reunion Gold (tsxv). Will be 3-5X bagger.

Gold just broke thru 2000 earlier today. When gold was 1550 this was a 30 cent stock, now trading at 13 cents. This is an jr exploration project miner in Guyana, Fr Guyana and Suriname. Barrick Gold owns 20% of them, Dundee also owns 12%. Mgmt Also owns a shitton of stock, so this doesnt leave much of a share float for rest of investors (AKA doesnt take much to move the stock)

Reasons to buy: 1)relative to peers it is significantly undrvalued, has barely participted in gold run up because a large seller has been pressuring the stock and is now out of the way. (Indicated by price and volume action). Official 13F holdings will be released mid-Aug this will be a catalyst to confirm the theory.

2)next door neighbour GTWO is up over 5X since March. They own essentially the same land. So major catchup trade potential.

    3) Cash on balance sheet will get them thru a year or two of exploration. No debt. Just closed a private placement that was upsizes after initial announcement. Which indicated higher demand. There is a 4 month lockup for these shares

    4) earnings will also be released mid august

    5) they are presenting at Beaver Creek 2020 gold conference (will be virtual this year)

    6) all things considered, they are in solid financial shape, have proven mineral assets, upcoming conference and earnings, just revamped their website, institutional investors are taking stakes at the lows and participating on the private placements. Consensus price target among brokers is 95 cents! Mgmt and existing investors are gearing up to push and sell this story. This will be a multi-bagger catchup trade.

Still super early, i keep buying stock when available will we get to 25/30 cents and then will hold for 60-80+

Not on anyones radar. Great opportunity

    Posted: 31 Jul 2020 05:00 AM PDT

So I get Tos has no commissions on equity and .65 per contract, but do you have to pay anything else, such as to open the account or to download software? Aka what would be the overall cost before I do any trading? Trying to decide if it's worth it. Thanks.

    GBP/USD Exchange rate

    Posted: 31 Jul 2020 12:36 AM PDT

I'm relatively new to the stock market, I have several investments in US companies. Some have grown in value, however as the value of the dollar is shrinking at the moment, I find it making a significant reduction in profit. Some of them are even at a loss despite being a higher price than when I bought them. In this situation I'm just wondering what more experienced people would do? I would like to take profit at some point and take advantage of current tech highs (like apple) but feel I am going against the exchange rate and best wait, in the other hand I will be missing an opportunity to sell high.
