Why Understanding Alpha, Beta, & Drawdown Is A Lifesaver

    Posted: 15 May 2020 07:48 PM PDT

    Hey all!

I've been conducting a lot of experiments lately, particularly with different portfolio splits and investing strategies (i.e option spreads, different sectors).

I see many investors focus too much on one component (i.e returns) at the cost of another (i.e volatility).

Example: Focus too much on huge returns by adding lots of leverage while ignoring volatility and huge drawdowns that come with said strategy.

I wrote a small post on the "what" and the "why" of alpha (returns), beta (volatility), and drawdown, and I threw in a bonus on the importance of position sizing.

Check it out if you're interested.

Stock Watch List May 15, 2020

    Posted: 15 May 2020 05:45 AM PDT

Good Morning, Here's My Watch List:

Gap Ups: ACB, NEWR, JD, JNUG, DENN, USLV, WBC

    Gap Downs: FTCH, NPTN, AAPL

Possible day 2 play: ALLO, APT, WIX (day 2 means it moved yesterday and could be in play today

Yesterday SPY came close to the 272 support level and gave us a good bounce. Right now its stuck in between that level and the 200 day moving average at 300. Until then a sideways consolidation in the market would be healthy as it will give stocks time to set up new moves and give moving averages time to curl back up under price and provide support. If we get a break of the 272 level, this could mean another move lower. For now though, we still have stocks breaking out to highs and some good moves being made. Not many gappers, today I'll run a scan after the market opens to find momentum stocks moving. As always, entries, targets and stops calculated before entering into any positions. Good luck out there and have a great weekend.

    Long term indexes

    Posted: 15 May 2020 08:12 AM PDT

Planning on putting about $2,000 a month into the market. Long term.

My thinking is something like this:

    • 35% QQQ
    • 20% SPY
    • 10% VNQ
    • 20% GLD
    • 15% VTI

So every month I will just add whatever amount I have into my portfolio based on this distribution.

Does it sound like a decent plan of action at this point?

Job Openings in U.S. Decline to Lowest Level Since May 2017

    Posted: 15 May 2020 08:06 AM PDT

    https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-05-15/job-openings-in-u-s-decline-to-lowest-level-since-may-2017

U.S. job openings plunged in March to the lowest level since May 2017 as the Covid-19 pandemic began unleashing its devastating impact on the economy.

The number of available positions plummeted to 6.19 million from a revised 7 million in February, according to the Labor Department's Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey, or JOLTS, released Friday. That compares with a median forecast for a drop to 5.8 million in a Bloomberg survey.

    Questions About DKNG

    Posted: 15 May 2020 07:51 AM PDT

Yesterday I bought into Draft King's when it was plummeting. I was expecting them to meet their projections during their earnings call, only to find they lost a considerable amount of revenue.

And yet...their stock is only going up today.

    Two questions:

    1. I know it's almost impossible to predict the market now, but can anyone explain what is happening to Draft King's stock?

    2. Is Draft Kings a viable play for the long term?

    Aurora Stock Consolidation Issue?

    Posted: 15 May 2020 12:20 PM PDT

I held 10 shares of ACB before the consolidation. I now have a place holder stock ticker where my ACB shares were held called "ACBTEMP". It shows a market value of $0.

How do I get this converted back to Aurora Stock and not this weird temporary holder?

How can a company be allowed to file their 2019 10-K nearly 6 months into 2020?

    Posted: 15 May 2020 10:47 AM PDT

Talking about Remark Holdings ($MARK), whose earnings call for the 2019 fiscal year is suppose to be on the 28th. I've looked online and can't seem to find the exact extensions for filing an NT 10-K, but it's definitely not close to 6 months.

Dual listed stocks and price differences

    Posted: 15 May 2020 06:04 PM PDT

Mods, I'm going to be upfront and tell you that my interest in this topic was piqued by researching a penny stock, so if this sets off alarms for Rule #1, I totally get it and I will rephrase the context.

I was wondering if anyone could explain why there can be a large price difference between stocks listed on the NYSE and another stock exchange. Specifically, I started looking at Foresight Autonomous FRSX, an Israeli company which is listed on the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange (TASE) at a price significantly higher than what it's going for on the NYSE. On TASE it's 62.9 ila, or roughly $18 usd, per share. On the NYSE it's $.79 usd right now. Comparing the daily charts they followed each other today, falling 7.5% and 8% respectively. So they at least seem to correlate there.

I did some looking and found that price differences like this are not unique among dual listed stocks, but I couldn't find anything explaining why one company could be valued so differently across different stock exchanges. Do traders feel better and perhaps patriotic about a national company listed on their local stock exchange? Or is this something else, like how many shares are outstanding? Hoping for a discussion or some pointers to put me on the right direction to find this answer out for myself.

The stock market can do WHATEVER THE FUUUCK it wants.

    Posted: 15 May 2020 05:16 PM PDT

I can finally sleep at night. With all these unpredictable movements, I've finally found solitude by watching clips of warren buffet give out timeless advice. This particular clip made me realize that the price doesn't matter once you buy, because I'm buying the stock as an investment into the business fundamentally. I love how he compares this to a farm land, and there's a neighbor farm guy pretty much yelling at you everyday different prices like a maniac. That's what the stock market is. I don't care anymore. Holding my companies for the long term. Unemployment can go up, coronafuckingvirus can stay, I know the companies I buy like Coca Cola and McDonalds will be worth a lot more in 10-20 years than today.

The dividens are almost 4cents (cad$) per month?

So if i buy 100 shares per month. 10 months a year. After 10 years i should get 400$ a month from dividens?

Is that how people retire off this? After 30 years ect...

Intelsat bankruptcy and David Tepper question

    Posted: 15 May 2020 01:53 AM PDT

The article attached states that David Tepper bought 7% of intelsat and Intelsat bonds. They just filed for bankruptcy. In the article it states "Tepper's firm has also bought Intelsat bonds and could turn a profit in the end," I'm just curious how he could turn a profit?

    Question about a margin call

    Posted: 15 May 2020 03:11 PM PDT

So I was under the impression that once you got the call you had at least 4 business days to meet the requirements by either liquidating stock or making a deposit before they would take action and forcefully liquidate the stock on your behalf. I bought into a stock yesterday 1263 shares at $26.90 each, totalling $33,974 half of that was on margin. Today the stock fell to a low of $20.25 (around 17%) and the call was issued. The stock recovered to $23.50 a share by mid day only putting me down about $4000 ( 11.5%) at that point. I noticed that they sold 740 shares around 1:00pm CST totally 17k which was the amount of margin I was using. Any idea why they did this the same day the call was issued and didn't give me the usual 4 days to take care of it? I've had margin calls in the past and they never did this before unless it had been over 4 days.

Would the price of oil drop dramatically to negative figures or single digits on Monday and Tuesday?

    Posted: 15 May 2020 02:55 PM PDT

I would like people's opinions on this.

Last month clm20 for oil was at 26.6 dollars per barrel on the Friday and a spectacular drop happened on Monday and Tuesday bringing it to low 10. While the may contract hit negative.

Would we see a big drop on Monday/Tuesday again as the contract expires on Tuesday?

Oil has rallied past two days but it's still not amazingly High and it looks like it's hit some resistance above even with great positive news.

There has been a warning on negative numbers repeated again but I don't think negative numbers will happen again. A drop, yes I think but not negative.

    Anyone have any thoughts?

    What’s the take on $CRM?

    Posted: 15 May 2020 11:03 AM PDT

I really don't know what their products are aside from being cloud-based, consumer-relations software. I want to determine if their products have unique growth tracks or if some mega-cap like $GOOGL or $MSFT could just make a clone of their product at a loss in a effort to win total market share.

    Diversify more or double down?

    Posted: 15 May 2020 11:41 AM PDT

I'm going for a 10 year Aggressive portfolio since I'm young and took advantage of low priced blue chips

    DIS 19.72 %

    JPM 15.56 %

    MAR 14.35 %

    RDS/B 5.19 %

    KO 8.03%

I want to go tech but most of them shot back up after their lows for March and the bubble intimidates me.

The other half of my money is in large-cap high dividend ETFs

Soon Schwab is getting into fractional shares

What is the recommended amount of sectors to go into? Thanks for your input and constructive criticism.
