My consulting business mainly gains new clients through referrals. How can I build up other channels for customer acquisition?

    Posted: 24 May 2020 03:09 PM PDT

I run a content consulting business (Newsletter and social media strategy, white paper writing, creating instructional videos, developing web site copy, etc) generating ~$100-$150k yearly in revenue before expenses. My goal, post-COVID, is to double that amount to $200-300k within 2 years.

Right now about 40% of our clients are either repeat customers (yes!) and 40% referrals from our repeat customers (hell yes!). I'd like to diversify the mix to be 33% repeat-33% referrals-33% other channels (inbound requests from our website/cold calls to us/positive responses to cold calls we made).

Right now, here are the major challenges we face:

    1) I love that our referral customers heard about us from happy customers, but there just aren't enough of them.

    2) Our repeat customers primarily fall into two buckets: Advertising/PR agencies who either are stretched internally or think we'll do a better job than they could do internally, or in-house clients who don't have capacity to take on big projects. I'd like to have our repeat customers to convert to an on-call retainer relationship with us instead of calling us when they need help putting out fires, but haven't had much luck with it.

    3) 90% of the inbound leads who contact us through our website or social platforms are unqualified. They either can't afford our services or have unrealistic expectations of what we can achieve.

    4) We've tried doing cold calls/cold emails in the past. Template-based emails from a CMS went terribly and had about a 1% conversion rate. We had much better luck making phone calls and sending individually written, personalized emails (20% conversion rate), but the time we spent on it didn't justify the $$ we made from it.

If you were in my shoes, what would you do?

    Sales contract creation

    Posted: 25 May 2020 03:38 AM PDT

I have a small manufacturing business as a side gig. I design products then get them made, and then do assembly in my basement. Business has been steady and now that I have a decent reputation I have been approached to design and manufacture custom variants with monthly sales volume agreements. What is a good resource to get a contract written up for the potential sales agreement? I am a industrial designer by training so I am coming into the business side of things blind.

    Helping Working Professionals/Entrepreneurs

    Posted: 24 May 2020 06:40 PM PDT

Hello Reddit! love getting to know people in here and getting to know this community better!

I hope it is allowed to ask:

I know that many busy professionals/entrepreneurs are struggling with losing weight. I'm building a small business as a consultant helping people with exactly that so I'm wondering, for all those that are struggling with getting fit and staying in shape, what are the biggest stepping stones you've encountered? Also, what keeps you from getting started / What bothers you the most about it?

PS: Sorry if this is slightly off-topic, I'm doing more research on this to better improve people's health and well being and seeing where they are coming from. Can't wait to hear back from all of you!

Feel free to send me a message if you are not comfortable leaving your statements in the comments. Also feel free to place your inputs in the comments below!

Post-pandemic, what are some businesses that you think will be much more in demand?

    Posted: 24 May 2020 08:00 AM PDT

I was thinking some sort of commercial cleaning or sanitizing company but that is probably the thought of a lot of people thinking about opening a small business right now.

I know that curbside pickup is gaining popularity and will probably remain well after this all passes but I'm not sure how that could be translated into a business opportunity.

Any thoughts as to what other types of businesses could be in demand once this is all over?

EDIT: For context, I am in my mid 30's in NYC with about $5-7k to get me started. I have access to other funds and have excellent credit if necessary.

Help with expanding our small kombucha and ferments company

    Posted: 24 May 2020 07:28 PM PDT

    Hi all,

My partner and I started selling our kombucha, pickles, and ferments about six weeks ago. What started as a pet project has quickly become something that is extremely overwhelming very quickly. We gained attention from a local chef who has promoted our product, and we have started selling our ferments at their restaurant farmers market weekly. Now other restaurant and stores want to supply our product. What was a home hobby that produced 8-10 bottles of kombucha bi-weekly, is now expanding into something much much bigger and we are woefully unprepared. I am reaching out to kombucha companies to ask about specific kombucha questions, but was wondering if anyone had ANY knowledge about any of the following. Help! This is so exciting but so crazy!

    - labeling for food products. Whats the cheapest and best way to get labels produced for food products, and how on earth do you figure out all the calorie/serving size stuff? Im reading through the FDA requirements and its extensive for labeling. Do we need all of that if we're just selling locally and shipping to folks? If so, how do we do that fast and quickly?

    - whats the most effective way to spreadsheet costs and sales from our online store and in person sales? We're both business noobs. Ive made a spreadsheet but im at a loss as to how small businesses actually do this in an efficient manner. Any help here would be awesome.

    - would you recommend us opening an account just for the business? right now we're just spending our own money, recording it, and trying to get that money back into our personal accounts right away. It feels like we're not effectively tracking it all though and we're no where near getting an accountant or anything.

Any small batch food or beverage business owners out there successfully operating out of their house? Any and all advice is appreciated, and thank you for reading this :)

What are the benefits of paying employees salary instead of hourly, and how do I do it?

    Posted: 24 May 2020 10:12 PM PDT

I'm thinking it's time to start stepping up what I do and consider salary instead of hourly, but I honestly don't entirely see the benefits of doing so. Do you recommend sticking to hourly? When it comes to actual employee benefits, which would you start with, and how do you actually supply those benefits? (i.e. healthcare or a retirement fund match).

    Business Acquisition Advice

    Posted: 24 May 2020 01:27 PM PDT

    Hi everyone,

I've got the opportunity to purchase a successful industrial automation business. It's an industry I know well in regards to the sales process and engineering support. The seller is asking for 2.8 million which looking over the financials seems to be a fair price. I have $60,000 in cash to invest but would need closer to 280,000 for a down payment. My question is should I save for a few more years to get to a point where I could do this on my own, or would trying to find other sources for the down payment be a good idea in your opinions? Thank you in advance for the advice!

Having a very bad experience with a customer

    Posted: 24 May 2020 08:46 PM PDT

Having a very bad experience with a customer... Today a customer called me two days after I completed their bathroom floor and joist repair. They stated that I had completely disconnected their bathtub in the drain area and stated that for two days all their bathwater was draining into their crawlspace. I reassured them that I would do everything I can to repair an error or a problem if it was something that I had fixed. When I got there the husband had already started "repairing" this supposed loose drain himself. As a home remodel specialist I know that there are two drain pipes coming down from the bathtub and they are both held on with brass nuts. I would like to upload a picture to show you guys but point blank I didn't even do any plumbing on the bathtub and there was certainly not enough water in the crawlspace to even claim that it was two days worth of bathwater. Does anyone have any advice?

they aren't threatening me in anyway however they are both very upset stating that "it wasn't like that and I was the only person who touched it". I do have both before and after pictures which I told this to the husband at which point he just became very quiet. I suspect he went down there to fix the leaks that he had existing already and then I think he may have gotten stuck and tried to pin it on me.

What is the right way to handle employee?

    Posted: 24 May 2020 08:30 PM PDT

    Hi there,

A little background information. I'm a young (24M) fellow, who slowly started to take over the small family restaurant in NYC because age is slowly catching up to my mother. I have no prior experience or knowledge in management but I am trying and slowly learning as I go.

I have a total of 4 employees in the kitchen. Employee A & B are the main characters here. B has slowly grown to dislike A's work ethics as B finds himself cleaning up a lot after him. I assume B initially started to cover for A due to the friendship they have developed but now it seems that friendship has slowly started to crumble. Both A & B have been with us since the opening of the restaurant. A was appointed the captain of the team but has had his ego get to him. He's been slacking off here and there has has let his management skills go. A's younger brother ( We'll call him C ) was hired because he had lost his job due to the pandemic and I had also needed another employee at the time, so it worked out for me. C had slowly started to adopt the habits of A and would sometimes come in late or slack off at work. I was informed by B that A came in late yesterday and took a nap before starting work, but didn't want that information coming from B. I come into work early today only to find the same situation happening. I woke up A and hadn't said anything to him yet. I explained the situation to B but he adamantly wants both A and C fired and states that he will not return to work until they are. I don't exactly like the thought of revolving around my employees but at the same time, I don't know if i can take the loss of A at the moment just because he's does come in clutch when needed. To hire and retrain two people at the moment is very financially straining, especially because of the pandemic. What is the best way to go about this situation where everyone is happy? My initial plan was to move the power balance towards B and if that was not enough, slowly start to cut A and C.

TLDR; One of my essential employee is fed up with the care free actions of another essential employee and wants him and his younger brother fired before returning to the work place.

    Dynamics 365 - yes/no?

    Posted: 24 May 2020 01:52 PM PDT

    Hi everyone,

I was wondering if anyone here has had experience with Dynamics 365 from Microsoft and what your thoughts were?

I've been looking for an ERP type solution that's more scalable than my current one.

This will be needed for the retail industry, so it will be covering POS, accounting, stock management, supplier accounts, CRM etc.

What's it like with regard to:

Ease of use Adaptability Value for money Scalability

I've spoken to an agent regarding the offering but would really appreciate some first-hand opinions if anyone has any!

Is an employee financial relief fund wise or does it blur the line between a business and a charity?

    Posted: 24 May 2020 07:12 AM PDT

Since lock-down started, some employees were furloughed. It took a long time before they were able to get unemployment benefits so prior to that they weren't getting paid while bills were piling up. My partners discussed about giving them some sort of financial assistance but varying responses were given. Some totally rejected the idea considering that no work was being done and the establishment isn't a charity. On purely legal and commercial terms, they were right and you can't really question it. Considering that there was no consensus, a few others and I just gave them some financial assistance out of pocket on humanitarian considerations.

I'm quite certain that the absence of a consensus will lead to some discord in professional relationship when operations resume (the employees obviously know who's charitable and who's stingy) and I wish to avoid the same in the future.

Recently I read an article published by a major consulting firm about setting up a relief fund for employees. This fund is supposedly a no-strings attached employee fund which can be used for employees in crisis and granted based on merit. Apparently a major fashion company has one.

It sounds fantastic at first impression but I do have a few concerns:

    1. The fund may be prone to abuse by the employees. When you turn down an application, I'm quite certain it will sow some resentment;
    2. The fund blurs the line between a business and a charity;
    3. When simultaneous applications occur, you would have to grant one in favor of another. It will also cause resentment between employees.
    4. It may discourage employees to save, knowing that they have a fund to tap into when they have personal emergencies. Actually I was bothered that the furloughed employees barely had any savings to cover a month's expense. It's pretty crazy considering the things I see them buy.

    Any thoughts on this?

Advice on how to start small food delivery service

    Posted: 24 May 2020 03:33 PM PDT

I live in a very small town that does not have Postmates, door dash, grub hub, Uber eats, etc. I would like to start my own food delivery service, but I'm not exactly sure how to go about it.

Any ideas on how the whole ordering food/customers paying/adding delivery fee, etc would work?

Sure, I could have people order food through restaurants and pay, give me their names so I could pick up for them, but how could I charge delivery fee?

    TIA

Have you ever had an unfair and misleading customer complaint go viral? How did you handle it?

    Posted: 24 May 2020 10:12 AM PDT

We recently had one that looks pretty bad on us on face value but objectively we had done all our due diligence and did nothing wrong whatsoever. The customers didn't want to understand the facts of the situation because part of it had to do with a family member dying so they are still grieving (death was a heart attack completely unrelated to our business dealings and that's not the customers issue with us). The customer blames us and made a very misleading post on Facebook that has over 300 shares now. To their credit the post painted them very effectively as the victim when in fact it was their own doing. The problem is, the reality is complicated and not easy to explain concisely or in a way people can easily understand. So people are just running with the simpler explanation that we are the bad guys and the customers are the victims. Have you ever dealt with something similar and how did you recover?

Small business management consultants, what things are part of your regular setup?

    Posted: 24 May 2020 05:34 PM PDT

Accounting procedures, operating procedures, software? Not necessarily looking for specifics, I'm just curious what baseline your clients need in place in order for you to begin measuring and improving their businesses.

    Edit:

For clarity, I'm looking to understand what the SMB consultant considers standard from a process and systems perspective. In full disclosure, I'm interested in the answers as research since my team is working on a product that potentially dovetails into how a consultant / mentor might onboard a client--I figure the answers would be useful info for others too.

Is the Original Email Important When Buying an Instagram Account?
