$2000 in damage? Insurance or no?

    Posted: 12 May 2020 06:29 PM PDT

Got hit yesterday. The man was nice and claimed responsibility but said he would probably just want to pay cash to the body shop and not deal with insurance.

I went today and talked to two body shops. Both gave me $2,000 estimates, which is more than I expected.

I called the guy who hit me and he said he would try to find a cheaper place. He tells me he has insurance and will use it but wants time to poke around. My car is drivable and I'm not in a rush to get it fixed due to covid.

How much could his premium go up if he has insurance? Will it cost him more than $2,000 in the long run if we just go through insurance?

Bike stolen. Claim filed. Was that a mistake?

    Posted: 13 May 2020 06:02 AM PDT

Recently, my apartment complex has had a string of bike thefts. Including mine. Their response was to file a police report and make a claim with our renters insurance.

This is my first time dealing with this, and I was happy that it was covered. So I filed the claim.

Now my coworker is telling me that was a mistake. That filing a claim for my bike will raise my rates for all of my insurances (auto, future home, etc). Was it a mistake to file this claim?

Edit: for the bot, claim was made in the US

    Car accident IL

    Posted: 12 May 2020 08:35 PM PDT

I was involved in a car accident one hear ago in Chicago IL. May 28 2019. I was leaving work going from downtown to the western suburbs when a car cut me off. I switched lanes and kept going, didn't think much of it til I noticed the car kept swerving between two lanes trying to pull up next to me. When we got the light before getting on the highway he pulled up next to me and started trying to get my attention waving his hand at me with something in his hand. Not sure what it was as I never turned to look at him. Once the light turned green I took off because I was somewhat nervous. Once I'm on the ramp he pulls up next to me in the middle lane and waves his hand again while holding something. I turned to look and tried to speed up, he caught up lowered his window and the I heard a thump hit my car/tire. Immediately my low air light came on and going about 55 mph my steering wheel started shaking. Needless to say my car hit his driver side passenger door. I kept driving towards the next exit on a flat tire and he followed behind me. Once we got to the exit I pulled into a side street and he proceeds to pull up next to me while he's recording with one hand and in the other hand I see what he was waving at me which looks like a gun. Small black gun. Don't know much about guns so that's all I can use to describe it. I immediately reversed and drove towards a gas station and stayed there. I called 911 and they told me to hang tight but no one ever showed up. I left after half an hour and drove to a parking lot across the street from the gas station and waited for a tow truck to replace my tire. I never reported the accident to my insurance as all I needed was a new tire and passenger side quarter panel which I replaced myself. Just last week I got a letter in the mail from the Illinois department of transportation regarding this accident. My question is, I never received anything in the mail in the previous year. What are the possible consequences with idot being involved. Will my insurance retroactively cover me? Yes I had full coverage at the time with State Farm. I still have coverage with them. Any advice would be greatly appreciated thanks in advance.

    Question about Car Insurance

    Posted: 12 May 2020 01:51 PM PDT

    Hello,

I don't currently own a car in my own name. My parents have cars in their names, and I drive them from time to time. However, if I were to buy my own car, would it automatically be covered under their insurance for some time? Or would I have to get my own insurance right away?

I know this sounds a bit vague and may have some missing information. This is more of a theoretical/general question for the moment, but if you need more information to answer, let me know.

Edit: I'm in Wisconsin at the moment.

    Short Term Health Insurance

    Posted: 12 May 2020 10:07 PM PDT

I live in Nevada currently and am a graduate student. I will be moving with my (30M) wife (29F) and 3 kids (5, 3, and 1 month) to Wisconsin in June for my job that starts early July. We will stay with family in Idaho for a few weeks at the start of June and will be in Wisconsin in late June. We have been on medicaid while living here in Nevada but I will get health insurance through work but it doesn't start until September 1st. What should I do about health insurance for my family for June - August? Should I get a short term insurance plan? If so, where do I look? Should I just not get insurance and risk it?

$100 for 5 minute teledentistry call?

    Posted: 12 May 2020 09:11 PM PDT

Filling fell out and the receptionist recommended a tele-dentistry visit. She said it was free, but I guess she was referring to the video app. Who would think they'd have to pay for the app though? Anyway the during the call he just asked if I was in pain, though I already told the receptionist that I wasn't, and that he can't treat me until the states covid restrictions are lifted. It was basically a waste of time, so of course I'm pretty shocked about this. I live in IL, USA.

insurance newbie needs Professional Liability Insurance (Errors & Omissions) - architecture industry

    Posted: 12 May 2020 01:43 PM PDT

Hello, I am an Architectural Technologist/BCIN Designer (sole practitioner) in Ontario, Canada.

According to the Ontario Building Code I need insurance coverage of:
    A) $500k per claim and $1mil in the aggregate if I bill $50-100k in fees in a year
    B) $250k per claim and $500k in the aggregate if I bill less than $50k in fees in a year.

I am currently a freelancer draftsperson (I have a business number and HST number) doing conceptual work (no insurance needed) or working with other architects/engineers and therefore they're taking all liability and I don't need insurance. But once I start doing my own projects that require insurance; let's assume 35% of my work would require insurance coverage, but still 65% of my work wouldn't.

    My questions:

    1. Should I register a second business number, business name, HST number for all insured work? And all uninsured work will remain under my other one?
    2. Talked to one insurance company and cost for me would be approx. $1200/yr for the "A" coverage amount above, $850/yr for the "B" amount above. Does that sound reasonable?
    3. I was told once I retire or quit providing this service I should keep paying insurance at least 1-3 years after my last project. Makes sense?
    4. Anything else I should know before jumping into this?

    Thank you in advance!!

Siding Color Match Issue with Insurance Claim (Nebraska)

    Posted: 12 May 2020 07:29 PM PDT

I also posted this in /r/legaladvice, but I want to get this subreddit's viewpoint too.

One side of our house received some minor hail damage last month. The estimate we received from our insurer reflects replacement of the siding on that area of the house only. The problem is, our siding guy tells me getting a match for this siding will be impossible as it has been discontinued, so our options are to 1) have mismatched siding, 2) don't replace the siding at all since the damage is relatively minor, or 3) fight to see if our insurance company will replace the siding on the whole house. I'd like to try option 3, but I want to get r/insurance's opinion before discussing the issue with a lawyer.

I looked through my policy and this is what I found regarding color/material mismatch — this part doesn't look good for us. (I've never dealt with insurance before, so forgive my stupidity when it comes to this stuff.) Our policy states:

    2. We do not insure, however, for loss:
    c. Caused by:
    (6) Any of the following:
(k)Mismatch of color between undamaged material and new material used to replace old, weathered or oxidized damaged material; or
    (l) Mismatch between undamaged material and new material used to repair or replace damaged material due to outdated, obsolete or discontinued products.

So like I said, that part doesn't sound great for us. HOWEVER, my question for r/insurance is this: Can state regulations trump what's written in my homeowner's policy? After some Googling, I found this Nebraska regulation:

    Neb. Admin. R. & Regs. tit. 210, Ch. 60, § 010 Replacement Cost Coverage
When a loss requires replacement of items and the replacement items do not reasonably match in quality, color or size, the insurer shall replace all items in the area so as to conform to a reasonably uniform appearance. This applies to both interior and exterior losses. The insured shall not bear cost over any applicable deductible.

Does this mean we have a shot at fighting our insurance company to replace the siding on the entire house? Thank you in advance for any advice you can give me!

EDIT: Another couple potentially relevant pieces of info — insurance is going to cover replacing our roof & gutters for about $12.5k. The amount they're saying they'll pay for the damaged area of siding is $1825.

Bought car with upcoming registration renewal, DMV closed

    Posted: 12 May 2020 04:55 PM PDT

Back in March, I moved from Illinois to Nevada. Then I bought a car in California, added it to my insurance and drove it to Nevada. I was planning to go to the NV DMV to get a Nevada driver's license and transfer the car title at the same appointment but then covid happened and DMV has been closed. Car registration is coming up for renewal in California and I don't know what I should do. Any ideas? I don't want to get in trouble for driving around in a car with expired registration. Insurance is still current on it.

    Help with Travel Insurance!

    Posted: 12 May 2020 04:02 PM PDT

I am responsible for planning a trip for 6 college students to attend the NMUN conference in Kobe, Japan (Nov 20-Dec 1, 2020). There will be 6 of us, all aged around 20-22, and the trip cost will be around $3,000 USD per person. We will be leaving from CA. Since it is a school organization outing, my university would fund the entire trip. However, in light of the coronavirus pandemic, the future is uncertain, and therefore I want to budget for travel insurance in case the trip must be cancelled.

I've looked around online but most plans seem to be for families or personal parties who are planning trips. Since I am planning a trip for a greater organization (my university) what travel insurance would I use? Further, should I worry about having medical travel insurance for our group? As it stands, I am mostly concerned about getting refunded in case of flight cancellation. Please enlighten me--where should I search for travel insurance in regards to my situation, and about how much should I expect the travel insurance to cost? Also, I want to make sure that the insurance would cover for coronavirus related cancellations, would that cost extra/be possible?

Thank you! I don't know much about this subject and any input you could provide would be very helpful. Also, if I'm not in the correct subreddit, please let me know which one I should post in.

    Company Car Insurance Risks

    Posted: 12 May 2020 03:55 PM PDT

I was given a company vehicle to drive, and I'm allowed to use it for any personal use also. I have had this for a couple months and have now sold my personal car and exclusively use the company vehicle. I am on my parents insurance plan and have been told that if I drop my insurance completely, my rate will be significantly higher when I resume coverage. (Considering buying a weekend vehicle). To have my name listed as a driver on my parents plan will cost me $75 a month, and I'm wondering if it's worth it to continue paying this to avoid higher rates when I resume coverage, or if the cost increase isn't significant enough to warrant 6 months of 75 a month. Any advice is appreciated thanks Also, any risk in only having work insurance? I live in Washington state

    Motorcycle stolen

    Posted: 12 May 2020 03:48 PM PDT

    Hi reddit,

My motorcycle was stolen 1 month after I purchased it. Being the first vehicle I ever bought, I was inexperienced and did not get gap insurance.

Geico said the valuation of the bike is 5,000. Minus my 1K deductible and they will be paying my lien holder around 4K. This is 2.2K less than what I own on the loan.

I'm not really one to create a fuss of a situation to get my way. But I wanted to ask to see if there is anything I could do to maybe get geico to help a little more.

    Thx for reading!

    Edit: I'm located in Florida.

    ACV amendment related question

    Posted: 12 May 2020 03:36 PM PDT

Home with roof and siding damage from wind/hail. 1950 sq ft home built in 2000, $4800 wind/hail deductible. Filed a claim. Insurance adjuster is saying I have an Actual Cash Value (ACV) rider - which I was not aware of. No one explained this rider to me when insurance was renewed year after year. Adjuster saying most likely I won't get paid anything. Should I close the claim?

Seeking advice on whether or not to have my wife on multiple insurance policies after the birth of our son.

    Posted: 12 May 2020 03:26 PM PDT

My wife recently gave birth and we're trying to decide whether or not I should add her to my employer's insurance policy. She already has a policy through her employer with $5k deductible / $5k out of pocket maximum per year for an individual. We've already decided our son will be under my policy, so her deductible and out of pocket max will not change.

The main question we have comes into play with the coinsurance on my policy. I'm currently on a plan that has a $5,800 family deductible, but am contemplating switching to a plan with a $1,600 family deductible. Under both plans, coinsurance for childbirth is 25% after meeting the deductible. The cost of the childbirth was $32,800 for my wife and $5,600 for my son. This means that having my son alone on my policy will effectively meet the deductible on either plan. But we're stumped on if it would save us any money to have my wife added to my policy. We assume my policy would be her secondary plan, so would the coinsurance amount be calculated on the full $32,800 or would it be calculated on the $5,000 left after her insurance pays? If it is calculated on the full expense, my understanding is that her expense would still be $5,000, but if it is calculated after her insurance pays, then we could be looking at a reduced expense if we have her on the plan with the $1,600 deductible.

Hope this all makes sense, but let me know if any clarification is needed. We are located in MN by the way. Thanks in advance for any help!

I went and case was dismissed by the judge, now my question is would the insurance find out about it and affect my insurance since I'm a 20 years old male in Pennsylvania?

Home claim - Water Damage to Cabinets (Texas)

    Posted: 12 May 2020 03:03 PM PDT

Water Heater busted in attic that went into kitchen. Insurance agrees that there is damage to particle boards at bottom of cabinets. They sent in "furniture medic" who said he will simply replace all of the particle board in the cabinets. Same goes for the island. There are two cabinet boxes with damage, one of them has the stove top installed on it.

We've had two contractors who say the only logical thing to do is replace the two cabinets - repair isn't possible. Replacing the two cabinets will have a high probability of breaking the counter top, since the cutout for the stove top will have a thin lip.

Insurance has said repair - plus any damage done while repairing will mean I'm on the hook. Contractors said high probability of damage. I don't trust "furniture medic".

My next step is to look for public insurance adjuster. Do I have a chance here? If we change two cabinets, we'll be looking at all the cabinets? Do I fight it or do I give up and use furniture medic.
