    Insurance Career Advice

    Posted: 24 May 2020 12:37 PM PDT

I've been thinking about making a move in my career in the next 2 years, but I'm at a loss of where I'd go or how to prepare. I'm less than 3 years into my underwriting career at a large carrier and while I'm being noticed for my success, I don't know if this is the path I want to continue on.

For some background, I've brought in numerous new clients and built relationships with brokers we normally haven't worked with. I'm able to go beyond my job description to get things done, but at the cost of late hours. I've been told by a couple managers that I'm doing great, and the company will surely reward me down the line. However, I watch the managers stay back late and on the weekends, and upper management struggles to get a few days off work a year. I'm fairly positive all of them make much more than $130k but I'm not looking to sit on a pile of money I don't have time to spend. So I believe I have a few options, and I'm looking for some insight for those of you who've experienced this or are in these job positions.

    1. Stay as an underwriter, avoid promotions to management positions, and take on a specialist role if it opens up. There are a few people at the company who've slowly migrated into a role as they became good at that subject, and the market has changed. There are a couple things I think I could specialize in, but it would take effort in convincing management/HR to create a job position for me. Also not guaranteed it'll ever happen.
    2. Move companies and hope their underwriters and managers aren't overworked. 45 hrs/wk & no weekends would be great. Are late hours and weekends just common in the industry? I've never worked elsewhere so it's hard for me to know.
    3. Get out of underwriting. One thing I like about the position is that your job isn't at risk if you can't find a solution. From what I hear, agents/brokers/risk consultants have a hard time saying no to their clients. I'm still learning more about claims and actuaries, but also open to going back to school to do software development as the insurance industry has a need for data management. What other jobs are available?

Thanks so much to whoever stays to read this long thing. I'm hoping to build myself now, to have a better case when I actually put my resume out there. How should I approach this? Who else should I talk to?

    Running a premium finance company

    Posted: 24 May 2020 07:02 PM PDT

Hi everyone. I work in a relatively large independent agency that does some premium financing in house and we are now looking into increasing that part of the business. Any advice on how to manage risk and find additional capital, and good and bad experience in running your premium finance company is appreciated.

    Washington State IFCA

Been searching for any mentions or experiences with Washington State's Insurance Fair Conduct Act, can't find any. I've been using it to hold my property insurers accountable for their actions, it's a very powerful tool. Anyone else had experiences with it, insurers or other policyholders?

Starting a career Insurance Claims! Advice?

    Posted: 24 May 2020 06:10 PM PDT

Hey reddit! So I'm starting my first ever "big kid" job, well sorta. I never decided what I wanted to do in life. I went to college with big dreams of being a doctor only to have that dream crashing down by seeing that quarter of a million price tag and a miserable internship. Since then I've worked in call centers since that's the entirety of my job experience. Most recently I worked as a 911 dispatcher for three years and while that is 100% a career and a "big kid" job... working nights, weekends and holidays gets old. I just accepted an entry level position in insurance claims and I'm sure excited for my first 9-5/salaried job.

Just curious what difference I should expect that I might not thought of. And how to prepare for my first day and career in insurance. I figure I should invest in some good pens and maybe a planner of sorts. Also I'm not use to driving during normal hours and sans pandemic I'm sure the traffic will be killer. Anything else?

Posting again, did not post correctly first time. Had a house fire on mothers day, everyone is safe and made it out without injury. Follow up questions in txt post, any guidance will be helpful.

Claims adjuster was 3rd party from my insurance, is that even right? Our house was purchased 1 yr ago for 264k. Our policy is up to 285k. First contractor, which has been the only contractor we spoke to cause they put a tarp on our house and helped with restoration process and been our only guidance cause insurance has not been much of help, other than agreeing to what we are doing. May be pulling the wool over my eyes, but anyways, contractor says it will cost 315k to put house back together. Stated we will need to pay 30k out of pocket. After telling them we have no money and also have 3 kids which one is less than two months he made a comment about discounts. Is this a tactic to squeeze out as much as they can?

Lost property can I just tell insurance to pay us for lost contents? Give a price? We are putting a list together but so much was damaged due to smoke/soot.

    Thanks again

    I am in Texas.

    Only legal for 180 days

    Posted: 24 May 2020 03:23 PM PDT

    Hi redditer,

Long story short, I had given birth in an ambulance. My bill was paid within timely limit. Unknowingly to me, my daughter also had accured a bill. Now, the tricky part is that her bill was never sent to my address and EMS failed to submit a claim to CIGNA (she was added to insurance in timely manner). Now it has been 9 months since she was born and EMS just sumbitted the claim through CIGNA, but cigna refused to pay because it has been more than 180 days since date of service. Cigna informed me not to worry since ems can't go after me because they violated "180 day" rule. Idk if this true, i am based in TX. Someone has similar experience? Thanks

Is it possible to renegotiate insurance premiums due to working from home?

    Posted: 24 May 2020 03:21 PM PDT

So I've been working from home for 2 months and just learned that I won't be returning to my office until at least September. My auto policy with Geico happens to be up for renewal next month and I am trying to figure out if it's possible to negotiate for a lower premium since commuting is not surprisingly where I do most of my driving.

    Edit: I live in California!

Update: Thanks for the replies. I decided to give them a call to see and after discussing what my current weekly mileage is, they offered me a discount of nearly 50% on my next 6-month renewal.

    In-Network Doctor Confusion

    Posted: 24 May 2020 02:25 PM PDT

US- TX A family member visits a particular doctor who on the insurance claim shows in-network. However, instead of the insurance paying any of the costs associated with the visit, they have instead negotiated a discount for the services provided. I realize this might be tricky to answer, but why would the insurance not pay if the doctor is in-network? Doctor is a specialist if that makes a difference.

My motorcycle insurance is TOO DAMN HIGH!

    Posted: 24 May 2020 01:57 PM PDT

I currently pay $1596/yr for my Yamaha MT07's insurance when my quote for a similar bike came out to $672/yr and a more expensive and more powerful bike was still only $792/yr.

What can I do? I've called Geico to discuss this and for some reason the same insurance coverage for my current bike costs way more than other similar bikes. They said their algorithm prices mine higher because it is sportier and more people crash it. This makes sense, but not to the extent that it shows in the rate difference.

I'm curious if any of you have had similar issues and found solutions. The only solution I have come to is to get a different bike to save $800/yr on insurance.

Car vs Health Insurance - what should the at fault driver's insurance pay? Medical expenses went through personal health insurance.

    Posted: 24 May 2020 01:42 PM PDT

Long story short - my wife was in an accident - someone opened up their car door, striking my wife, she fell and got hurt.

We went to the doctors and provided our insurance - later we got information from the lady for her car insurance. Medical claims have been processed under our personal insurance. Not a big deal but I'm not sure how to deal with reimbursement requests from the car insurance. Do we reimburse out health insurance for what they paid or just claim what we are required to pay?

Edit - located in Idaho USA.
