FEDEX Delivery is Atrocious for Small Business, They Utilize Lazy/Unethical Contractors

    Posted: 23 May 2020 08:56 AM PDT

I run a small business and have urgent packages that need to be shipped over night to me by clients.FEDEX has been faking their delivery attempts or blatantly lying on whether or not a business is closed or customer is available.

FEDEX delivery drivers never read the delivery instructions and do not call the phone number provided in the 'Manage Delivery' tab.

After discussing with FEDEX help, apparently only the FEDEX Express couriers are real employees. The rest are just contractors, meaning they don't have any ties with FEDEX themselves and do not care about providing an acceptable level of service.

I am writing this post to warn others on what to expect should they or their clients use FEDEX for important deliveries. AVOID THEM AT ALL COSTS!

How do you deal with customers that don't wear masks?

    Posted: 23 May 2020 11:15 PM PDT

My parents are immigrants and small business owners. They run a very small operation, but, IMO, they do well for themselves, even during the quarantine.

I have a 9-5 office job, but I've been helping them out as much as possible. Since the quarantine, I have been helping them non-stop because the more I work, the less my parents work; and since my dad has a plethora of diseases, this reduces his exposure to people. We tag team it. As soon as I'm done WFH, I go to the store and I tag my dad out for him to go home.

We placed a "NO MASK, NO SERVICE" sign on the door and for the past week or so we have been giving our customers warnings. About two days ago, we got more aggressive and started kicking people out. 95% of the time, people wear masks. At times, we get the "oh, I'm sorry. I forgot it in my car" or some other line, go out and get their mask and life goes on. Then there are the rest, who either 1. fight back or 2. say "ok ok ok," then continue to walk right past us and completely ignore us. We have to eventually yell at them to leave.

I'm not here to debate the politics/science of all this. I hope that can be avoided here. The way I think of it is like this - if I have a "shoe off" policy at my house, then take your damn shoes off when you're at my house even if you don't do it at your house or think it's dumb.

I just got home from an incredibly long day at work - I got into shouting matches with a handful of customers. How do you guys deal with customers that don't follow the rules?

Wife's Boss Wants her to Sign that She Doesn't Want to Return.... But she does.

    Posted: 23 May 2020 02:58 PM PDT

The owner of my wife's sushi shop in California is calling and texting the employees to sign off that they don't want to work so he can get a PPP loan and I smell BS. He asked if she wanted to work and she asked "when?" He replied back that "You really don't want to work, there won't be much to do that often and you have kids." All the employees are getting these texts and phone calls where he is trying to convince people to sign his paperwork. I'm having her tell her co-workers to hold off until we understand what the heck is going on and why he doesn't want the people to return.

If she signs this, she will have to report "Yes" when she answers the question, "did you refuse work?"

I'm thinking she will lose her benefits if she does this. Can anyone provide any clarity? Is anyone else having a boss do the same?

    Alarmed employee

    Posted: 24 May 2020 12:53 AM PDT

    Hello all!

I am an employee at a restaurant. When my place of work received the ppp loan he was very understanding about potentially making less than we were on unemployment. He was generous and actually added to our wages for the first pay period.

Second pay period comes around and some employees discovered their wages went down significantly. When they asked the employer he said he prorated our hourly based off the tips we received.

    Can he do this?

From what I understand is, if I average 1000 and I make 500 in tips he feels as though he only has to make up the other 500 even tho he was paid the 1000.

    That can't be right, right?

    Help!

Do you think it's a good idea to be present on reddit with your business?

    Posted: 24 May 2020 03:40 AM PDT

I'm starting my own small business soon, so there is a lot of brainstorming going on of course and one of the things I'm concerned about are the trolls on social media. I love reddit so far and I read some article about how is it beneficial to be present here, but I have a feeling like it's the biggest playground for the trolls on the internet right now and they feel even more courage to do their stuff behind anonymity.

On top of that my brand will be in a controversial niche, so I feel like I might burn myself here. Like what if I post something they don't like and they leave bad reviews on my sites. Does it ever happen?

Is this the case or I'm just worrying about it too much? What's your experience? Any advice is appreciated. Thank you!

International postage skyrockets (UK - USA)

    Posted: 24 May 2020 03:38 AM PDT

Every website I have received a quote from, International postage has increased 3* on large parcels up to 5kg.

Up until recently, I could post a parcel (<5kg 65cm / 45cm / 45cm) for £55.00, fully insured, with DpD. UK to USA.

I've just spent a couple hours checking to see if I've made some sort of misake, going over past delivery invoices. But no, I have posted a 5.5kg item of the same size to the USA which cost me £100. Now, for a parcel half that weight, it is £160.00

Absolutely can't do business with the USA now. Just wanted to post this to check to see if others have seen the same increase in prices, and to warn others giving delivery quotes on the old costs. I haven't found any announcement or news by these companies or anywhere on Google which plainly states that prices have risen.

Resources for Buyers of small businesses

    Posted: 23 May 2020 10:28 AM PDT

Hi all- I got lucky and found a business to buy on buybizsell / businessesforsale end of 2018 and it has turned out really well.

Just wondering if there were better / additional resources for buyers of small businesses. I would imagine those who are looking to expand their platforms and expand their businesses can find a lot of willing sellers who need to reduce the anxiety/stress during these times. Would any folks in this thread have any resources to look to sell their business or for buyers looking to locate businesses that may come up for sale?

Running a delivery mini-mart in Puerto Rico, what are my best options for a website builder?

    Posted: 23 May 2020 05:00 PM PDT

We are currently using Wix and they are having issues with adding tax due to our location. I also feel like they are very limited in terms of features and layouts. We aren't even able to add a search bar to our store page. The app also is really slow. I'm just unhappy with Wix in general and want to try something new.

    We want something that can:

    • Add multiple offline payment methods, we need at least 4. For example, Cash / Cashapp / Food Stamps / ETC.
    • Add instructions at checkout that are clearly visible upon ordering
    • Search bar on our products page
    • Responsive on mobile with a decent mobile app
    • Add manual tax rates for items or a group of items, along with a store-wide tax rate.

These are the biggest things that we need that wix cannot do. I don't blame wix because I don't think they are meant for a mini-mart type of business but it just isn't working for us anymore.

    Thanks guys!!

Interview questions for stores on a local shopping marketplace app?

    Posted: 23 May 2020 03:26 PM PDT

    Hey,

I started a local marketplace app. It's an Amazon clone, but connects users to local stores for pickup or delivery, instead of waiting for the product to be drop-shipped. For example, you want to buy a new spatula, so you just search this site and see all the options at all the stores around you. I really want to support local stores, which is a major reason I'm making this app.

So now I'm putting together my marketing campaigns. I'll be running a blog, and driving traffic there.

One category of posts is "store owner interviews." Obviously, the goal is to promote my marketplace site, but equally to promote my partner. There are a lot of great stories for the shop owners i've gotten to know in my area, so I'm going to start there. What sort of questions should I ask in these interviews? Since you guys are the kind of people i'd be talking to, I'm asking for your help!

    Question List

    Here's what I have:

    • What's your story? How did you get started?
    • Who shops at your stores?
    • How do you decide what to stock?
    • What do you like about your community?
    • How has COVID affected you?
    • What makes store so special to community?
    • What's your favorite part about the shop?
    • Questions owner wants me to ask / goals to meet

So what do you guys care about? What would you want to say if someone said they wanted to interview you about your business, knowing people in the local community would see it?

Thanks for reading! I'd love to share my site once I launch, so perhaps I'll be back soon. I'd love yall's help, i read this subreddit allllll the time for inspiration.

Things to buy to help focus on business growth and

    Posted: 23 May 2020 08:35 PM PDT

I'm looking for stuff to buy on Amazon since I have a $50 gift card with them. I don't care for anything like clothing or food. What I want to spend the gift card on is stuff that will help get my business started and grow once released.

For example since I program I brought a ultra wide monitor so text on screen is easier to read. This will increase my productivity when working on my business. I want to buy stuff that does things like this.

Have any ideas? If you do tell them.

Small business accountants - How much do they actually do?

    Posted: 23 May 2020 08:31 AM PDT

Hey guys. I am getting close to launching my first indie video game. I've set up the business side of starting my small studio and it's time to get an accountant.

I've really got no idea, but how much does an accountant actually do on a day to day in regards to helping a small business?

I am looking to automate as much as possible with quickbooks.

    • I have one accountant offering to be my guy for $175 per month.
    • I have another accountant offering to be my guy for $75 per hour.

If everything is automated with quickbooks, then does my accountant just need to look over the numbers at the end of each month, quarter or year? or do they need to be doing a lot more?

I'd assume it's a case of me needing their input early on with setting up tax stuff and getting the ball rolling for us. But then for the day to day, month to month stuff we could just handle it ourselves with quickbooks and then reach out to the accountant again at tax time to do our taxes and make sure it's all in order.

or if there is much more that an accountant would be doing for us on a daily basis then the $175 per month guy would become the much better option in no time flat.

Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

    Max out 401k -confused

    Posted: 23 May 2020 06:39 PM PDT

I am trying to set up a 401k for a small business with 2 goals. The business is a S-corp and my wife is one of the 20 or so employees

    1. Encourage all my young employees to start investing.
    2. Max out as much of my wives income into a 401k as possible.

The first goal is not hard to take care of. The second is much more confusing. I understand that 19.5k is the max employee contribution. But I also see that you can put up to about 56k max when you include employer contributions to a 401k. I also understand that there are rules about how much an employer can contribute to a particular employees 401k.

Everything I read does a good job explaining that safe harbor 401ks will eliminate the need for discrimination testing but will require some contribution from the employer to all the eligible employees or all participating employees. I get the details of that part just fine. The part I can not find good into on is how much the S-corp can contribute to just my wives account without contributing to others.

Can anyone explain this to me either here for everyone's benefit or over the phone? Or have a good resource that explains it well?

    Posted: 23 May 2020 11:02 PM PDT

    Hey guys,

Small business owner here. If this post isn't allowed please delete... or let me know I'll delete it.

I have a surplus quantity of black cotton face masks. Currently I have 900 left. They're washable, reusable, made in the USA, and excellent quality. If any small business is in need, contact me. I can ship out the same day. I'm located in the Southwest.

I'm doing 100 minimum orders. Picture of the mask

I needed them for my barbershop. I also helped out other local businesses. Now just helping out anyone that doesn't want to wait for backlogged orders and is in similar industries in states that require them.

Help in making an LLC/S Corp?

    Posted: 23 May 2020 09:10 AM PDT

Hi, I'm a 16 year old freelancer living in New Jersey. Usually I'll take jobs here and there for $200-$500 and the employer will make a check out to me in my name. I've been working for different corporations underneath my boss mostly but I just did a job as myself and they say I need to make an LLC so they can write a check out to that because as a decent sized corporation they can't make a check out to me? Any advice on how to make an LLC or anything else? Thanks.

Is "Your Mom's House" a bad name for a retail business?

    Posted: 23 May 2020 09:07 AM PDT

I started a retail business under the name Your Mom's House, LLC but am finding some people are scared to click the link. (Think it is rated R)

Owning a business by this name has always been a dream of mine, mostly so I could say I own your Mom's House or shoppers could say I got it at your Mom's House, but with everything being online should I change my website name/ logo to me more discreet on the business name? Or try a DBA? Website is ToYourMomsHouse.com, would you click it or think twice?

New retail business. Putting Ideas before plans and is not working out.
