Just wanted to check the pulse of the other members. How are you holding up WFH?

Personally, I was already struggling with the idea of continuing public accounting, but now I am sure I would like to do something different.

Getting real tired of recruiters negging my experience and giving Jordan Belfort pitches for staff accountant positions...

Like, please just tell me the positions you have right now and send over descriptions.

I understand I can't get every position I want. I'd said I'm open-minded. Just stop with the hard sell shit.

    Guys, I'm desperate.

    Posted: 13 May 2020 04:23 PM PDT

    Hi guy/gals,

I'm 26 and I haven't enjoyed a single day in my career. I'm at whits end.

I graduated with a masters in finance at the age of 22 and I havent had a relevant/satisfying job since then - my 4 year career has thus far been filled with glorified sales roles providing "clients" with "investment solution"....

Most of my fellow econ/finance friends are suffering a similar fate, some have broken through the glass ceiling and are working at decent companies as analysts. But even these guys are motivated by money and have no real ambitions other than making more of it, they cant MAKE anything.

As a child of two great engineers I feel embarrassed and ashamed. I'm sad that I cant contribute anything to the world and I'll never be proud of what I'm currently doing.

My last attempt at happiness is doing a second postgrad degree in management accounting because I feel that this is more "technical" - followed by the ACCA. I am also hoping it will give me some more job security than what I current have, which is summarized by the words "just hit your sales targets".

I am not motivated by money, I just want to work in a business where I can provide genuine value. Whether that is balancing the books or sorting through tax returns, it cant be worse than what I'm currently doing.

I have flat out told clients to not invest in the various schemes and funds at my current job because it wasnt the best thing for them. Whilst my colleagues will flog crap left and right just in order to climb sales league and corporate ladder (and successfully if I may say so).

Am I doing the right thing? Is accounting the right path?Should I drop everything and learn to code?

Sorry if I sound desperate and angry, its because I am. My bigger fear is turning 30 and being miserable.

I'm honestly close to tears as Im writing this and sending it into the reddit ether.

    Thank you in advance.

Just curious about what anyone knows about how firms are doing right now! Specifically KPMG considering they just put $400million into a training facility

Does anyone lie on their timesheet when it’s slow?

    Posted: 13 May 2020 07:37 PM PDT

I absolutely hate having to work 40 hours as a salaried employee when there's no work during the off season. That defeats the entire purpose of being salaried and is just a way to exploit staff. I'm thinking about just lying on my timesheet from now on to recover some of that unpaid OT. Who's with me?!

    FAR is a never-ending tunnel!

    Posted: 13 May 2020 07:10 PM PDT

Any advice on studying for FAR?

I am using Becker and about halfway done. At F5 with 5 more sections to go. Hoping to take FAR in late July depending on Prometric of course.

Scores on the MC practice questions have ranged from 50-75% and I am finding it very difficult to do the task-based simulations without using Becker's Skill Master Videos.

Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I work till the early hours of the morning. I’m burnt out. How do I tell my boss about this without sounding like I’m incompetent.

    Posted: 13 May 2020 02:09 PM PDT

I manage payments for a start up company that's in its hyper growth stage.

I'm the only person hired to handle their AP functions. So I have to process hundreds of invoices a day manually because they use a very basic accounting software.

I'm not only handling one entity but 4 other entity and have to process payments for all of them too using different banks.

I'm 22 and do have some experience in AP in both medium and large firms where everything is a lot easier because of the systems that they use.

I'm almost two months into this role but find that I've been working from 9am to 4am in the morning because of how intense it is. Of course I do take breaks in between but I've never experienced anything like this.

I need help for sure but don't want my superior to think I'm not capable of handling the jobscope.

How do I tell them I am burnt out?

CPA Testing Window Question and REG Advice

    Posted: 13 May 2020 07:33 PM PDT

    (1) I have a question... So they got rid of the testing windows (Q1, Q2, Q3, Q4) - it used to be that you could only a certain exam (say FAR) once per quarter. So if you failed it in Q1, you had to wait until Q2 to take it again...

But since there are no longer testing windows, does anyone know the timing limit on when you can take an exam (the same exam, in case you fail) again? (Wondering because I need to pass my last exam by October and the wait times are madness right now...)

    (2) I am taking the next 2 days off from work to study and really try to gain some ground on studying for REG. I work for a Big 4, so I have Becker study materials. What chapters are most important? What topics are most important? Any certain things I should really focus on or don't need to sweat?

    BEC - 83

    AUD - 75

    FAR - 77

    REG - ???

    Interesting Career Choices?

    Posted: 13 May 2020 04:37 PM PDT

    Hi all,

I am a B4 auditor working on my CPA, and have done a full busy season, so I am still pretty green but I do have a real taste of what audit is like. I have also worked in a large pubco in the accounting department, specifically in reporting.

Unfortunately, I found both of these roles uninteresting, personally (that isn't to say they inherently are, I just haven't found them engaging). Some of that might just be because I am new and therefore don't get any of the more complex work, but I do feel that sticking around in audit or exiting to into a corporate accounting role might not be for me.

So, my question to the community is: what are some more unique and interesting but rather unknown roles that are available to CPAs, both inside public accounting companies and in the broader job market.

    Thanks!

    Concerns about accountant (UK)

    Posted: 13 May 2020 06:45 PM PDT

    Hello Accountants of Reddit,

Based in UK and having some issues with my accountant but don't know if they are big issues but they are stressing me out. Hoping for some guidance.

I've received a letter from HMRC claiming I had missed the deadline for filing my confirmation statement & stating because of Corona they would give me a grace period otherwise legal action would have been taken. My accountant confirmed before the March deadline this was filed in Jan.

I contacted HMRC to confirm whether it's a partial filing (thinking I could have missed something I was supposed to do). After about a week they confirm nothing had been received, so I email my accountant that eve (Monday), I chase him Tuesday afternoon. He confirms he'll send a screen grab. Chased him today (Weds) for screengrab and no reply.

On top of this he doesn't reply to my requests to see my submissions for the last year, to set up payment for the new tax year, although we have agreed to it, and he hasn't responded to me regarding any recent letters from HMRC regarding this year.

I am concerned about the lack of transparency, should I be? Are these errors normal? What is my best course of action? How do I see my filing and is it easy to go in and do the confirmation myself (I really don't want to be prosecuted)?

I'm going to try get him in the phone this afternoon (Thurs) so any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Edit: I've been keeping HMRC informed that I was taking action to address it, hopefully this is the right thing to do?

    Thanks
