Rule Changes: Resource Requests & Post Flair

    Posted: 02 Mar 2020 10:17 AM PST

    Hey Everyone,

For a long time now the Moderation Team has been working behind the scenes to improve the quantity of posts in the community while not losing the quality of the engagement found here.

We take great pride in the culture of this community and how people here behave in a circular manner much more so than in other business related subs that are much more rampant with people only seeking to use the community and dip out as quick as possible.

We have struggled for a long time on how to address this. We created our Weekly Threads as a means to satisfy some of this by funneling specific topics together. Those topics had previously lead to the most noise in the sub, when posted as single submissions.

With the Reddit Redesign finally giving Moderators new tools focused on community management, we feel ready to try some new things to open things up a little bit more.

    -----

    Resource Requests

We have updated Rule 3 to allow you to make requests for resources in a stand alone Submission.

Prior to today, any such requests that would result in the community compiling a list for you would not be allowed as a submission.

Moving forward we will allow submissions of this nature thanks to the newly instituted Post Flair system.

    • All submissions seeking resources should include a clear description as to why you are seeking such resources--the more context you provide, the better results you'll get from the community
    • All submissions seeking resources will be marked using the "Resource Request" Post Flair
    • Requests for co-founders, new hires, and other personnel are not considered Resources--same goes for Feedback Requests
    • All replies in such a submission must still follow Rule 5 and include a clear explanation as to why such a resource is being shared with OP

If we discover someone using such a submission as a ruse to self promote or advertise for another, the ban hammer will fall upon them.

That said, if you are seeking any resources you may now freely utilize a Submission to make such requests outside of the Weekly Threads and our Discord.

    -----

    Post Flair

As many of you may have already noticed, the sub is using Post Flair to categorize Submissions.

As mentioned, we have been working towards exploring new ways to open things up across the sub for a while now.

Post Flair is a big step towards that, because it is giving us the tools to give you control in how you choose to cut through the noise produced from a very active sub.

Every Submission will be tagged with appropriate Post Flair.

We have a new Menu with links to allow you to quickly filter the Sub's content by these categories.

Right now, the menu can be found at the top of New Reddit on desktop and in the About section on the mobile app. We will have this menu added to the side bar of Old Reddit later today.

You can also click on any Post Flair to quickly filter the Sub--only Submissions matching that tag will be displayed. You can test by clicking on the Post Flair on this Submission.

We hope to open things up even more for you all, soon. We have many Post Flairs we are working on and testing behind the scenes.

We would enjoy hearing your ideas for what Post Flair (or categories) we should add.

    -----

Feel free to reply to this comment with feedback and ideas.

Just be sure to share your thoughts and opinions in a polite and adult manner.

And, do your best to remember that the Moderation Team is not paid by Reddit and that we have busy lives away from here that have us overworked, tired, and overwhelmed from pursuing our own startups and careers--on top of the usual stresses of life.

We are all volunteers doing our very best to create a safe and engaging environment to support you all.

Don't forget to join our Discord to engage with the community in more ways:

I want to sell my startup for $1.5 million. What does this require?

    Posted: 03 Mar 2020 01:15 AM PST

My business did $250K revenue last year. Tracking towards $350K this year.

I promised myself I'd do this until I could sell it for $1.5 million. How do I know when I'm at that point? What would potential buyers need to see to value my business at $1.5 million?

    (UK)Can I open a corner shop under 18yo without the Start-up visa?

    Posted: 03 Mar 2020 01:24 AM PST

I am studying in an international boarding school based in Scotland and I'm not born here nor have any parents living with me here. I'm 17 and seeing how you have to be 18 year old I don't have a solution around leasing a space in Edinburgh for a cafe nor renting an apartment for myself. Does anyone know what I can do about this without waiting a year.

    Thank you in advance.

    Google Places API Policy Requirements

    Posted: 02 Mar 2020 11:06 PM PST

Hi, I'm working on my site right now and I'm considering using Google API for place searching and pulling google reviews. However I saw in Places API Policies that I need to: 1. Add in a Powered by Google logo if I'm not using any google maps (I'm not) 2. Provide Terms of use and Privacy Policy which meets the guidelines of Google

Has anyone ever done this before? Can I put the Powered by Google logo anywhere in the page using the API? And lastly, are there specific templates I can use to create my Terms of use and Privacy Policy that meets Google's guidelines? I'm not sure if I can just use my own words to describe who uses the data and how it's being used.

Any help will be greatly appreciated!!

Are there any ways to prevent or mitigate them? Thanks very much for the help in advance!

    Kickstarter ? GoFundMe?

    Posted: 02 Mar 2020 10:07 PM PST

    Hey everyone - newbie here!

I've been working on an idea of mine for 6 years now... hit some ups n downs. I finally made a website that is my portfolio and showcases my projects. The project I am interested in patenting is on there, but I didn't give the project in details for many reasons - so it's vague. Once I have provisional I'll go more public about my project details.

My question is... I'm low on funds, would it be rude to start a GoFundMe for a patent funding (cover lawyer fees)? I'm just trying to think creatively here. I'd share my journey/story... not sure what to give in return.

What are your thoughts? What have you done ?

Funding Source = Clients/Customers not an option if you're a startup?

    Posted: 02 Mar 2020 07:25 PM PST

Recently tried signing up for a cc for my startup... and noticed how different my "startup" is compared to normal(?) "startups"? They don't have a funding source = clients/customers as an option.

By definition, is a startup always necessarily something that isn't revenue positive vs venture/self funding?

If you are registering a credit card for your startup, and your company is funded from clients/customers... which choice would you choose below:

Cold email and prospecting for B2B SaaS

    Posted: 02 Mar 2020 09:04 AM PST

I'm looking to get better at prospecting and cold email sales for my B2B SaaS. I'm pretty new to this and so far my emails suck and don't come across as a mass email since I'm taloring each one to the person I am emailing. I'm having a hard time getting responses and also a hard time finding the right way of getting emails. What are some good resources for learning cold emails and prospecting?

    Launching a product...

    Posted: 02 Mar 2020 09:56 AM PST

I have a unique hardware/software based product intended for business / industrial applications. It's cheap and straightforward to manufacture, based on existing hardware which has CE certification etc covered already.

It's feature complete and I would say ready to sell.

I'm a one-man-band based in Scotland, with more of an R&D background and I want to take this thing to market in some way.

No market research completed, no website and no business plan for this one as yet - I initially developed this for my own use then realised it's a lot more unique and useful than I thought.

I can build a sales website in a couple of days and a business plan in a few but don't really know where to go from here - how to price (one-off plus optional service plan?), or basically, how to take it to market.

I've bootstrapped to date, no investment and with low funds.

Can anyone give me some advice on how I could take this new invention to market?

Also, if anyone is interested in getting involved in some capacity, feel free to let me know.

Startup Bank for Early Stage Emerging Technologies Startup (Currently, monetizes more from consulting)

    Posted: 02 Mar 2020 05:19 PM PST

I've been bootstrapping a startup (that should probably be funded) for a long time. Partly out of arrogance and a naive sense of adventure in wishing to build it all myself (because I can), and partly out of a lot of PTSD stories I've heard from founders who have exited. That's another issue though.

My question is regarding recommendations for a startup bank for an early stage startup whose (humble, hey, early stage!) monetization happens (sometimes nearly effortlessly) but is working to have it come from a different source. Daily balance might fall below the typical 5 digits that most banks require to have fee-free accounts.

    --

tldr; I'm a technical subject-level expert (who has also won too many industry awards) in an emerging technologies area. I've had a Delaware C-corp since 2015 with just me - and was registered actually due to a client who could only work with such an entity.

The amount I make doing contract CTO and consultant gigs far exceeds what the products from my startup brings back in dollars. (IP is potentially a different story, though this being software, I haven't spent anything on IP yet... because software patents really just don't make sense and also other fun stories, that's an aside. Also, maybe it is because I make so much more from building other people's software that I don't focus on monetizing my own.)

I often spend what I earn the way an artist might - similar to the director protagonist in A Marriage Story. I have significant personal debt that really ought to be a company's debt. Anyway, for a long time, I've just had everything under my own account. So currently I'm looking for a bank for my startup, even though it will likely just be me for a while longer. The goal is to transition to monetize more from my startups' products, but as those of us who do contract work knows, it's often too easy to just keep getting paid lots for building client projects.

How to trademark a slogan along with a brand?

    Posted: 02 Mar 2020 12:59 PM PST

Thinking of trademarking a particular brand I came up but I also want a slogan to go along with it as I think it helps a bit marketing wise. Would I have to trademark both separately or can I trademark both as one trademark? Would you recommend a slogan and why/why not? Thanks for the help in advance.

    Getting funding without launch

    Posted: 02 Mar 2020 02:10 PM PST

    Hello,

We (two persons) have spent last 12 month working on MVP. Yeah, I know it's too much for MVP, but it's really complicated and took a lot of R&D. Now we have demo (but it's not production-ready) and no clients (but we are talking to potential users).

It will be extremely hard for us to continue working on product using our own savings and it's very unlikely that someone will want to pay for product at current stage. Also, it's hard to develop product, talk to customers, attend meetings at the same time.

What would you recommend to do in this case? Our ideas:

    1. Apply to incubators. But will they be interested in product with no clients?
    2. Try to get customers. Again, very hard at current stage. And we almost out of resources.

Low-volume Product Enclosure Manufacturing Methods Ideas??

    Posted: 02 Mar 2020 08:49 AM PST

    Hi All,

I'm working on an enclosure for a product I'm bootstrapping. It's gonna be pretty low-run for a while and we're still iterating. Any suggestions on DIY manufacturing materials or methods?

My shop is the local makerspace. We have a laser cutter, a vacuum former, 3D printers, CNC routers, power tools, mills, etc...

The enclosure dimensions are roughly 50mm x 250mm x 130mm. It's a hollow shell with cutouts. The bottom is a flat part with screw holes and the top (making up the bulk of the enclosure) can be lifted off to reveal the electronic innards.

3D Printing: the enclosure size is too long and too tall to print well on my printers. Outsourcing would be too expensive. I tried bonding smaller prints together but it's too labor intensive.

Laser Cut Acrylic: Works well for rectangular objects. Can be more labor intensive than 3D printing. Bending around curves is a pain on tight radii, parts with cutouts, or complex shapes. Solvent welding isn't too bad. Cost of material is a little high. Maybe there's a better plastic to use?

Vacuum forming: Looks to be too much post processing work with the tools at hand. Doesn't look like it would handle cutouts well.

Laser Cut Sheet Metal: Haven't tried it yet. Might be an option but I'd have to outsource it. Gives me less flexibility in making modifications.

Created a service, but not sure if I should start like that

    Posted: 02 Mar 2020 04:51 AM PST

    Hi all,

so I created a service to connect businesses and customers easily. For that I created two databases (one for the application and one for the user management). In addition to that I built a backend for the administration, two webservices (user management, application) and an app for iOS and android. It is working, but I am afraid that the design is not nice enough. The backend needs improvement and the app style as well. Would you go and just start and improve over time or is it more important now to have a more sexy application for the beginning?

    Thanks

Where do I find networking opportunities to explore startup options?

    Posted: 02 Mar 2020 10:27 AM PST

    Hi,

I've recently "retired" after 20 years in a large IT company. As a somewhat young mid 40s guy I find myself in a position where I have options including never working again which doesn't suit me at all. I have way too much energy and commitment left in me to just spend all day fishing for another 40 years.

I also have an option to join a startup where salary can be quite reasonable or possibly non-existent for a period. I'm certainly not working for free anywhere unless I see a route to success, however a non-rev option is something I'm open to if I buy into the vision.

I've 20 years at an executive level of sales and management and because of that have a lot of industry contacts at every level including CIOs of companies we all know.

With the right product I can kick off a sales force and am looking for a CRO or VP Sales role in such a company.

With that said I have had several people recently reach out to me in regards to joining their startups at a board or CRO level and am not convinced of their vision. This leads me to this ask as I need a larger pool to swim in.

After browsing this sub for a while I see a lot of smart people making really smart technology but without any way to get it in front of people with large sums of money to spend. It's a gap I think I can fill.

So the question and TL;DR: Is there a place I can go as an executive level BDM/CRO to find potential partners in the startup world and what would you all recommend? LinkedIn is a good start, but there has to be something more focused on the startup community.

    Thanks!

Thanks for your help, and good luck on all of your startups!

What are the best ways to issue initial authorized capital stock / shares?

    Posted: 02 Mar 2020 04:25 AM PST

Hi all, first time posting here.

To start, I live in the Philippines. I am in the process of creating a software startup, and I have several question that would be great with the advise of a lawyer, but would love the help of this community.

    1. What are the reasons for having / not having par value for the authorized capital stock? What are the advantages / disadvantages?
    2. By law, a minimum of 25% of the capital stock must be subscribed. What are the reasons for shareholders to subscribe only 25%, instead of, say, 100%?
    3. Is there a common convention on the number of shares issued by the company (e.g. issuing 1,000 shares vs 100,000 shares)?
    4. Should I get a lawyer when drafting the Articles of Incorporation and By-Laws?
    5. Is this primary purpose in the Articles of Incorporation acceptable?
    • To engage in any lawful activity for which corporations may be incorporated in this state;

    Thank you!
