US stocks erase $3.18 trillion in value this week amid coronavirus tailspin

The S&P 500 lost $203 billion in value on Friday, according to estimates from S&P Dow Jones Indices.

Friday's losses bring the weekly total for U.S. stocks to $3.18 trillion, the firm's Senior Index Analyst Howard Silverblatt told CNBC.

Stocks cratered again on Friday as investors fled riskier assets amid intense fears about a slowdown in global growth caused by the deadly coronavirus.

Is now a good time to buy?

    Posted: 28 Feb 2020 12:21 PM PST

Is it a good time to buy stocks in general? Or wait until they drop even more? What are you all planning on doing? I'm assuming selling blue chips now isn't smart?

Why rush? Markets are still overvalued.

    Posted: 28 Feb 2020 12:58 PM PST

I still see lots of people kind of FOMOing because buying the dip has worked for the last 5 years. I think it is very important to remember that the market has had a very very long run. Last year the market went kind of parabolic based mostly on speculative reasons. Things cant go up forever. I would never invest without assesing a company or the market intrinsic value.

When one invests they should always try to value the business they are trying to buy. Not doing so is like buying a house without researching its location or checking its condition.

How much further do you expect S&P to drop

    Posted: 28 Feb 2020 05:03 PM PST

We are already down past 10% from peak. When it's all said and down, and it may take several month to play out, is this gonna be a 20%, 30%, or 50% drop in equity market?

    SPY rally explanation?

    Posted: 28 Feb 2020 01:06 PM PST

Ant reason for the EOD rally? SPY hit overbought territory fast and hard. Was this just a rush from everyone to sell their positions before the weekend or a short squeeze?

Can the FED rescue this market?

    Posted: 28 Feb 2020 08:22 PM PST

What are people general thoughts on another wave of QE? If the FED cuts rates are equities going to rebound like in 2018 or are market participants more wary now?

Gilead and Corona Virus - is it a bust?

    Posted: 28 Feb 2020 10:02 AM PST

I heard a lot of people going for Gilead because they have an experimental antiviral that seems to work in-vitro and has been successfully tested in animal models.

Studies seem to indicate that there's a cheaper alternative to experimental patented drugs: chloroquine phosphate. It's an anti-malaria drug that's generic and readily available.

Looks like it is efficient enough:

    https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/32074550

I honestly don't see Gilead making bank on a disease that's infected under 100k people, where 80% of cases are mild and there's already a generic alternative available.

Take advantage of market correction or finishing maxing 2019 Roth?

    Posted: 28 Feb 2020 12:53 PM PST

I have 1500 put into my 2019 Roth so far, and three more paychecks before April 15th. I'm using a simple 3 fund portfolio with FZROX, FZILX, and FXNAX. I'm wondering if I should put everything extra I have to max it out in time or try and take advantage of some of these dips ? I do believe the market will correct in time and go back up, so I'm not selling any of my current holdings. The only thing I'm mad about is if I followed my original strategy and maxed it out before putting money in my indiviudal account, I wouldn't have paid about an extra 10-20% on most of my current stocks compared to what they are today(I only started investing this month, and wanted to take advantage of the previous market growth we were seeing for a bit there). So that makes me lean towards finishing the Roth off, but I also know theres a chance we may not see lows like these again for quite some time. I'm only 31 so I know in the grand scheme of things it doesn't make that much difference, and what matters most is that I finally started, but it's still something I'm thinking about!

    Roth Vs Traditional IRA/401K

    Posted: 28 Feb 2020 05:00 PM PST

Why would anyone choose a traditional retirement account if Roth was an option for them?

I always hear people say "If you think your taxes will be higher after retirement go with a Roth, and if you think they will be lower go with a traditional." but to me this makes almost no sense at all.

Lets say two people that make the same amount of money put in 5k a year into a retirement account. person A goes with a traditional account, and person B goes with a Roth.

after 20 years they each put 100k into their accounts, and lets say they each picked the same exact things and the accounts are now worth 500k each.

person A didn't pay any taxes on those 100k, which saved them maybe 15k-25K in taxes over the years. but now, when they start drawing money from their account. it will all be taxed. all 500k of it. which might cost them anywhere from 75k-125k in taxes

Person B payed all the taxes on those 100k contributions, which cost them maybe 15-25k in taxes over the years. but now, when they start drawing money from their account. it wont be taxed at all. none of the 500K will have any tax whatsoever.

so why in the hell would you take a possible 100K hit in the long term just to save yourself maybe 1K a year in taxes? it makes absolutely no fricken sense to me at all. Yet i see people weighing the pros and cons and they never ever bring this example up. Why aren't they shouting from the rooftops "go with a Roth ya stupid bastard!" instead of acting as if they are practically the same?

    i don't get it.

    TSX/TSE Picks & Dow Picks

    Posted: 28 Feb 2020 03:46 PM PST

So for those of you that invest in just the TSX/TSE or just the DOW or both what are some picks you are looking at?

I have been looking at Royal caribbean simply because it looks like a massive artificial low much like SNC took were there are some great gains to make just simply on the bounce up. I am waiting a bit though just to see if we get any more infections or scares that make it drop to around the 2016 levels of 70.

On the TSX/TSE I was thinking of being more conservative and going with some of the big banks like CIBC who have a damn nice dividend and maybe buy in around the 97-98 mark and just hold for the 120 sell point.

What stocks and strategies are you looking at for this upcoming year?

Should I sell my 3 SPY shares?

    Posted: 28 Feb 2020 03:29 PM PST

    I have a small account approximately 3-4k (started with 2 Jan 2020)

Upon funding I immediately bought 3 shares of SPy at around $315 as I figured I'd hold some shares Buffet style, but I mainly enjoy and have had success with options. Don't really wanna lose the $60ish by selling now, but I don't wanna lose bigger by holding these shares. What do you guys think?

It's so frustrating watching the media tank the stock market for the sake of views

    Posted: 28 Feb 2020 02:44 PM PST

News outlets have no shame, this much is obvious, but their willingness to destroy the market through coronavirus fear mongering is a new low.

I work in a call center for a major investment company, and this week we've been flooded with people calling in talking about how the news told them to sell before the coronacirus crashes the market. I don't think I need to explain what's wrong here.

I'm definitely not trying to say that coronavirus fears wouldn't have had any impact on their own, but most passive investors would not have even thought about this impact if the media didn't shove it in their faces. These same news outlets will then act shocked at the decline that they're directly causing.

The media is causing far more damage to the market than the coronavirus ever could, and it really frustrates me. The manipulation for views is truly disgusting.
