Peer Support and Self Management Saturday’s - A Safe Place to Vent, Seek Emotional Support, Share Self Management Techniques and Experiences, or Just Rant

    Posted: 01 Feb 2020 05:07 AM PST

Welcome to this week's Peer Support and Self Management Thread.

This is a Safe Place to Vent, Seek Emotional Support, Share Self Management Techniques and Experiences, or Just Rant.

The goal for this thread is to help one another manage mental and physical health so we can more easily find success.

We all struggle sometimes and it is important to recognize that the struggle is part of the journey. The important thing is to learn how to overcome that adversity to grow and succeed.

Be tactful and classy in how you vent your feelings and share your frustrations. Act in a mature manner.

Ask questions, share experiences, and be there for one another. Practice empathy in giving advice and remember that what worked for you isn't guaranteed to work for others. Make suggestions, not demands of others.

#Because this is meant to be a safe place to support emotional and physical health there is a zero tolerance policy in effect. Be KIND. Be sure to report any conduct that is in violation of that key tenet.

You can also find more support using instant chat on the /r/startups discord.

    Tell us about your startup!

/r/startups wants to hear what you're working on! Contest mode is on, so remember to select 'Show All' to see all the replies. If you don't see your post, you probably need to load more comments at the bottom. Also, all posts are sorted randomly, so the sort function doesn't seem to work.

Advice for SaaS sales equity vs comission

    Posted: 01 Feb 2020 01:14 PM PST

I'm a full-stack developer and over the past several years I have created a SaaS in a certain niche and have reached 100% market share in the country I'm based in and I'm now looking to expand to other countries.

The SaaS is for a type of brick and mortar business which organize certain events and helps with everything from CRM, to record keeping, to live event organization, marketing, and broadcasting of live stats and information regarding said events.

It's basically a complete game-changer in this particular market, and my portfolio includes the top 3 global leaders in the space (companies worth billions), where they've used it for certain time-limited periods at some events. It has also been briefly featured in the international online media in the space, and there are interviews about it.

However, the product right now is now in use in only two small countries, so I'm looking to add an investor and a sales/regional development manager.

I've set the company valuation at just 500 000 EUR. Current MRR is at around 5000 EUR. Since it's just me, expenses are probably less than 1000 EUR per month, mostly for cloud hosting and legal and acocunting services. I've priced it extremely low, the overall market size for the product is at least 100k MRR in Europe with a 50% market share, which I think is achievable, considering the lack of any comparable competition.

There's also an iOS/Android app attached to the SaaS that helps customers with marketing that has 1500 unique users per day on average. It's quite successful given the niche.

It's been hard finding an investor in the space - I don't want just anyone -, but I have been talking with one of the most well known people in this niche from my native and launch country and he is interested in funding for 5-10%. He completely supports the project, and wants to get involved hands on, besides just investing money.

I'm not necessarily interested in offering more than that, and I have a stable and tested product right now that just needs new customers, which shouldn't be too hard to acquire. To reiterate, the plan is to launch in other countries.

The competition is pretty much an obsolete piece of software with no upgrade path. But customers are used to it and they're the current authority in the area, so it's been hard to convince their existing customers to switch.

I'd like some advice on the following:

The investor/angel friend would like a way to get extra equity by getting involved. I've thought about giving him 1% for every 1000 EUR MRR he can generate. I think I'll cap this at 5% maximum. Is this a good idea? Are there any alternative options?

I've also been approached by an old acquaintance that has worked for several years in the niche in a neighboring country and is convinced he can get traction there, but he won't work for commission. He wants equity.Basically he wants to buy equity in exchange for his commission. Also, he will not agree to a 10-20% commission since it wouldn't mean much to him. I've been thinking of maybe offering him double that, which he'll use in exchange for equity. He'd be instrumental in getting customers in that particular market. That means that for 12000 EUR ARR he gets almost 1% of equity, at the initial valuation of 500k. Is this a good idea? Are there any alternative options I could consider?

Also, does SaaS sales commission generally carry over year over year, or is it just for the first year of subscription costs?

Edit: since some commenters decided to mock instead of adding value to the discussion, I'll add this:

The revenue is low because there are just about 10 customers available in the current market and I've historically charged them a low price of an average of 500 per month. However, Europe has about 800 potential customers so that will change.

There are additional monetization opportunities available that havent been tapped yet.

What can happen using same domain but different TDL to what already exists?

    Posted: 01 Feb 2020 07:07 AM PST

    Hi all,

I hope this is the right place for this post but I'm not 100% sure so please forgive me if not.

I'm building a tutorial blog for a certain niche, a lot of domains were taken but a .dev TLD was available. It fits really well and sounds good (as it's tech/development related). Before purchasing I decided to check the other TDLs for it and of course they're taken.

The .com is for sale for a stupid price with no actual website, the .net has a site that sells guides from what I can tell and the .co.uk has a guy making YouTube videos on very specific parts in this niche and he's simply posting the videos to his website without any real content other than the video itself.

I am wondering if I register and build out the .dev domain can I get in trouble? Can any of the other domain owners come along and force me to shut the site down or hand it over? As far as I know there's no trademark for it and it's somewhat generic, not a brand name as such.

I just don't want to put in a lot of time and effort for it to be wiped in an instant. I am leaning towards using another name but this fits, is short and sounds great.

    Many thanks in advance!

    Advice on seed funding

    Posted: 01 Feb 2020 08:03 AM PST

Hello. I'm new to the startup world but I'm working with a founder who has done successful brick and mortar businesses. He started those mainly using business loans. We are venturing into a tech startup and I think we can float it at least for an MVP/early stages. But I would certainly like to get early investor support in case we need more money. Now for those who have been through this, how do you get early VC interest? Do you have to join an accelerator or incubator? There is one VC here in Austin that does early/seed stage investing but they are notoriously hard to get a hold of, which makes sense. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for reading.

How to make OKRs visually appealing?

    Posted: 01 Feb 2020 10:52 AM PST

Currently our OKRs (below) are presented in a table format, however the format and presentation isn't well received by my team forming of devs and business analysts. I'm keen to know how you all present your OKRs in a visually appealing way? I'm looking to print the OKRs on A1 Paper to get team members more engaged in how their work each sprint relates to OKRs.

Solo startup - should I start it or first find co-founders?

    Posted: 01 Feb 2020 02:46 PM PST

Hey Im full time Full Stack Developer, I have basic marketing skill and basic selling experience, Im very good at negotiations and pitches/presentation. Basically Im not typical developer, I found interesting area where I can try to build a company on it. Area is B2B for small and mid sizes company, so pretty big market. Last time I presented in small group my pitch of idea, problem and solution. And I get positive feedback.

Right now I think its time to move to starting asking potential clients on this problem and solutions. Gathering all informations and feedback and then try to create a MVP.

But everything on early stage, or most of the things I think I can do alone. And learning from my past attempts where first I Created MVP and latter started asking potential clients. Im thinking about getting co-founder which should help me in creation this "startup". But for now I dont have any person whicg: 1.have time and capacity in his life for it 2. have enough balls to help in 100%. I got few friends which can help me, but more like consultants, with some advice or help i marketing, graphic design etc, but I dont have anyone which can fully commit in this project.

Do you think its good to start alone and latter find more people?

What sort of contracts are required for content?

    Posted: 01 Feb 2020 07:34 AM PST

My startup is about to start creating video content. The content will include people who don't work with our company, and we'll obviously be paying them for starring in our videos. What kind of paperwork/licensing should we prepare so that we effectively own the content?

Help with Setting Up Membership Concept

    Posted: 01 Feb 2020 06:28 AM PST

I would like to implement the following system for my private tutoring business, but I would like to know the best and most affordable way about setting it up. I have not set up any website as of yet, so I am open to multiple solutions.

    I would like:

    1. A three tiered membership system which gives members a different tailored rate when they book lessons.
    2. A calendar booking app that is integrated with this membership that allows them to book a time frame and check out.

To do this am I better off using something like Wordpress or Wix? Or hiring someone to do a site from scratch? Any help would be much appreciated. I will try to explain anything that isnt clear.

    Thank you.

Sunday’s Success Stories - Celebrate Your Successes From the Past Week: Anything goes, none too small!

    Posted: 01 Feb 2020 05:07 AM PST

Welcome to this week's Sunday's Success Stories Thread.

A lot of us get way too hung up on the destination and the fact that we are not there yet.

It is important to take a moment to reflect on a great quote from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., "The steps you take don't need to be big, they just need to take you in the right direction"- Jemma Simmons

This is extremely relevant to all of us in this community. We should all be more aware of the successes we achieve every day that carry us closer to our goals.

Celebrating these successes, no matter how small they are, allow us to stay motivated, focused, and happy while we struggle to achieve dreams of various sizes.

The purpose of this thread is to share our successes from the week with one another and have something to celebrate together.

So, let us know what successes you have achieved this week! Nothing is too small or insignificant!

#Because this is meant to be a safe place to support emotional and physical health there is a zero tolerance policy in effect. Be KIND. Be sure to report any conduct that is in violation of that key tenet.
