    Just gave my two weeks

    Posted: 04 Feb 2020 08:08 AM PST

I've been feeling suicidal for the past year in cycles. The last month has been especially bad. Had visions about getting up from my desk and hurling myself onto the subway track every single day.

Scared as hell right now but I honestly don't think I would survive if I kept trying to push through. Don't know what I'm going to do, not sure why I'm posting this just thought it would make me feel better.

Senior citizen trying to make partner

    Posted: 04 Feb 2020 01:44 PM PST

Hi guys I am currently working from home in my retirement home and I am 75. Do you guys think if I keep working and doing excellent in my performance reviews that I can be promoted by 90? The life expectancy in the country I live in I think is 95.

How difficult is it to come back?

    Posted: 04 Feb 2020 09:24 PM PST

Background: Senior (JD/LLM) at a Big 4 specialty group.

I received an offer at a small boutique tax litigation law firm and am considering accepting. The billables are slightly higher but the base salary would be double what I am currently paid.

The issue is I like working at my current firm. I like my team, I like the other teams in other cities that I work with daily. I like the work life balance and stability that the firm provides (as long as you do decent work you won't get fired, consistent raises and promotions, Big 4 is unlikely to go under, pension plan, etc.). While I am excited about the prospect of actually practicing law and more pay, I would like the option to come back for the long term if the law firm thing does not work out.

How hard is it to come back? Am I leaving too soon? I've seen other lawyers leave as seniors to go to law firms and then come back as a senior III or manager. Is that common?

Funny examples of what not to do at a networking event?

    Posted: 04 Feb 2020 07:12 PM PST

Just witnessed someone give their resume to a CPA at networking event, the CPA said that they would pass it along to the hiring manager but the student had to apply through the school portal ASAP, as the application deadline was soon. The student's response?

"Oh well yeah maybe not tonight but I can apply on the weekend."

Kindergarten student trying to make partner

    Posted: 04 Feb 2020 09:22 PM PST

So my son is in kindergarten and he really wants to become a partner at one of the big 4. He does Kumon every day and has incredible analytical and mathematical skills. However, we feel like he hasn't really grasped the concepts of auditing and the steps to conduct a successful audit, and he's also somewhat confused about corporate taxes and whatnot. My question is: is it too late now for him to ever become a partner? Thats his dream to become a partner at the big 4.

Best price you've seen for Roger/Becker CPA Review?

    Posted: 04 Feb 2020 01:12 PM PST

    Hi all,

I'm finishing up my 150 hours in May and was thinking about just going ahead and buying my CPA review course if I saw a good deal.

I saw Roger was $1,800 for the unlimited and Becker was recently $2,500, but I believe those sales are over.

What're the best deals you guys have seen so I know when to buy/do you guys know how to get the best deals based on time purchased, etc.?

    Thanks!

EY Assurance in Mexico or U.S.

    Posted: 04 Feb 2020 07:36 PM PST

    Hey guys,

I am looking for an advice. I met an EY assurance manager in Mexico. Since all my family lives there, I asked her for potential employment opportunities in Mexico as an auditor in Mexico. She said it would've be easier for me since I already have accepted an offer for EY in the Chicago Office.

It is obvious that I won't be making closer to the same salary in Mexico than the one offer in Chicago; however, life is cheaper in Mexico. Any point of view?

For you tax folk, how long did it take before you didnt need prior year work papers for reference? I feel like I'm inching my way there.

I feel so stupid when other employees walk by and see me digging through last years file. How long did it take you to feel comfortable just completing a tax return?

    Toronto Job Advice

    Posted: 04 Feb 2020 05:35 PM PST

    Hi everyone,

I am a recent undergrad starting the PEP program in May. I was planning on finding a job locally to complete my hours, but this has proved to be challenging since there are few accounting firms in my areas. As a result, I am thinking of moving to Toronto in order to find a job and get the ball rolling. Ideally, I would like to start around May. I would like to find a junior position in audit, but even an internship would work. To my understanding, the Big 4 firms have already done their hiring for the summer. Does anyone have suggestions as to where else I may have a chance getting into within the next few months? I am not picky about where I work, as I am more concerned with starting to get some experience than anything else.

    Thanks in advance!

Accounting Today Article - Made me Chuckle :D

    Posted: 04 Feb 2020 12:35 PM PST

    https://www.accountingtoday.com/news/aicpa-ceo-melancon-cpa-licensing-under-threat?utm_source=linkedin&utm_content=socialflow&utm_campaign=accountingtoday-li&utm_medium=social

I do not know why but this article gave me a chuckle in a sense. i understand that we do not want to discredit the CPA but some of the other stuff in the article is funny to me. The AICPA cant seem to wrap their head around why firm hiring is down and why younger people are not staying in public. (i left almost 2 years ago and am not going back)

I feel like for the last few years the articles regarding CPA exam and accounting hiring is like a broken record. I still feel like the fees and such are a little high for the exam once you factor in 150 credit hours, review course, etc but thats just always been my opinion. Plus it hurts paying that fee after a 74...
