If I have to email you to purchase your product and your response time is more than 1 business day, I'm going elsewhere to get the product. (Small-Medium Purchases)

    Posted: 28 Jan 2020 12:57 PM PST

Even if you can't get to your email all the time, set up an automated response or send a quick note saying someone will reach out shortly, but no response means you're losing business to someone who's able to complete an order immediately. Additionally, you're sending a message that if something goes wrong, the communication and getting it fixed is going to take time. Be on top of your business and communicate with your clients.

Sometimes the hardest part of owning a small business isn't getting jobs or making sales but getting other people to believe in your company and put in hard work.

    Posted: 27 Jan 2020 05:59 PM PST

I had a pretty rough day. I've been having a huge drought when it comes to hiring employees. My company is short staffed and because of it, I either piss off my employees by increasing work loads or I piss off customers by canceling jobs. Or I work in the field and not focus on growing the business.... IDK feels like I'm in a total catch 22. I mostly just wanted to rant but is anyone else going through this? What things have helped you in these low unemployment times? With employees having such good opportunities.

A Thread: Simple SaaS Stack For < $20/Month

    Posted: 28 Jan 2020 08:23 AM PST

Hey all, I've been building SaaS products for over 10 years now and I compiled a long thread explaining how I think about building a small SaaS project from scratch.

For the people just starting out, I think it can be helpful. For the experienced, I'd love to hear your feedback.

Here is a summary of the thread:

    • NO JS frameworks
    • Solo Dev
    • Simplified devops
    • Get MVP built in 1-2 weeks (if not less)
    • Cost < $20/month

Top 10 Lessons From A Profitable SaaS Startup

    Posted: 28 Jan 2020 02:36 AM PST

    Top 10 Lessons learned:

    1. Cashflow is everything. Plan and budget for the next 6-12 months if you've figured out a hack.
    2. Don't start building your product/service until you convince yourself you are willing to give this your next 10 years.
    3. Never rush for a co-founder/investor. Slow down and wait till you find the right one.
    4. Build an agile team. Better team players will help you scale better, else, you would end up getting frustrated.
    5. Listen to everyone, thoughtfully. You don't have to implement every suggestion, but listening is critical.
    6. Understand the space you are operating like the back of your hand. A lot of effort and time needs to go in here.
    7. Don't think about marketing right from the beginning. Focus your year 1 and 2 only on sales & getting the cash. Once you have the positive cash flow, go all out with marketing.
    8. There is never a good time to Go-to-Market. You should always be in the market, reading about the industry, listening to clients and improving the product.
    9. Customer is always way more impatient than your thought, and way more independent than ever before.
    10. Focus on Growth. Stay hungry for growth 24×7

    Rebranding

    Posted: 28 Jan 2020 01:24 PM PST

I currently have a skincare product business and am going to rebranding and stepping away from skincare products. I will be selling items like vinyl and screen printed mugs, shirts, bags, etc. I may also continue some skincare options. I am currently struggling with coming up with a new name. My skincare co name is Wandern SkinCare CO - which gets very confusing for people to understand. I am looking for some tips or ideas for a new name. I am wanting a generic name that leaves it open for different products instead of funneling me into one thing as my previous name does.

    TLDR: Superhuman's step-by-step guide to Product/Market Fit

    Posted: 28 Jan 2020 11:20 AM PST

Rahul Vohra (Founder, Superhuman): "What if you could measure product/market fit? Then maybe you could optimize it. And then maybe you could systematically increase product/market fit until you achieved it."

Step 1: Run Sean Ellis's PMF Survey with your users

    • Ask users "how would you feel if you could no longer use the product?"
    • Measure the percent who answer "very disappointed." This is your PMF score.
    • The magic number is 40%. Companies with strong traction almost always exceeded 40%.
    • You don't need a large sample size to start running the survey! "You start to get directionally correct results around 40 respondents, which is much less than most people think."

Step 2: Segment the "very disappointed" group of survey respondents.

    • These are your most discerning users, aka "high expectation customers" (h/t Julie Supan)
    • Analyze their feedback to discover what they love about your product.
    • Is it too limiting to tailor your product for high expectation customers? "It's better to make something that a small number of people want a large amount, rather than a product that a large number of people want a small amount."
    • Ignore the users who would not be disappointed if they could no longer use the product. "They'll request distracting features, present ill-fitting use cases and probably be very vocal, all before they churn out and leave you with a mangled, muddled roadmap."

Step 3: Segment your on-the-fence users

    • These are the survey respondents who replied with "somewhat disappointed."
    • Analyze their feedback to figure out how to convert them into fanatics.
    • Specifically, dive into their answers to the "How can we improve for you?" question.

Step 4: Funnel these insights back into your product roadmap

    • "Spend half your time doubling down on what users already love and the other half on addressing what's holding [on-the-fence users] back."

Step 5 until PMF: Repeat the process until you reach PMF

    • PMF score should be your most important metric.
    • "It was our most highly visible metric, and we tracked it on a weekly, monthly and quarterly basis. We constantly surveyed new users to track how our product/market fit score was changing."

    In summary:

    • Get your PMF score
    • Get to know your high expectation customers
    • Convert on-the-fence users
    • Double down on what users already love
    • Address what's holding back on-the-fence users
    • Repeat until you reach PMF

Which is harder? 1M venture or 10- 100k ventures

    Posted: 28 Jan 2020 09:15 AM PST

As simple as the title states.

I'm fortunate enough to live in a place (NYC) where there is no lack of necessity for service businesses.

I and a few partners have started a company and in our first year we were quite profitable. Instead of forcing this venture to grow and placing lots of pressure on it. We're choosing to let it grow more organically and looking at other areas of opportunity to start service companies.

So to phrase it, do you think it would be easier as an individual or small group of partners to open up several (not necessarily 10) smaller companies to constitute 1M in revenue. Or concentrate efforts in one venture to maximize its return. Also taking into account all that comes with having to run multiple companies at the same time.

Curious to hear from those of you who have maybe gone through something like this in the past, as well as those who haven't.

Cheers and best of luck to all in whatever it is you do.

    Posted: 28 Jan 2020 08:40 AM PST

    I'm stuck at the moment.

I don't have an llc because I don't have the money for all the costs of a business or to register name at the moment.

I know I will start receive payments when I post my product online.

I tried opening an online banking account with Azlo but was declined.

What are my other options? I only have a couple personal online banks like Chime, N26 and Varo.

Also have bad credit if that's necessary information.

Any information will be truly helpful. Thanks.

What do you think of sending my portfolio for corporate event planning to the big ceo instead of the head of communication?

    Posted: 28 Jan 2020 12:44 PM PST

For the beginning of the year, i sent it to the head of communication since the companies I'm aiming are big. I came up with a new concept where I focus on companies that are part of the best places to work and thought that they would love my concept.

I met some people last week and they said that maybe the people working in the communication department won't be as effective. And sending my portfolio to the CEO would have a better impact because I told about how companies can develop a happy place to work etc and build leaders.

But I feel like it's the assistant that will pick up the package if I send it to them. I mean, men like Bryan Tracy hire assistant because they trust that they will filter everything well.

What do you think ? Maybe I should wait for the response I get on the previous campaign before deciding to contact the CEO . I feel like if they have a hierarchy it's for a reason.

I'll happily hear from your thoughts tho

Not some hokey sleazy stuff, but something really valid.

If I want to test this on people, and do like a clinical trial, is ti super hard to do? Is there any way I can do a clinical trial or some sort of mini clinical trail in a different country?

What are some of the biggest mistakes you first made running your own marketing agency?

    Posted: 28 Jan 2020 07:58 AM PST

So I'm sure this question (or variation of) has been asked many times. I'm a young professional (24m) working at a traditional advertising company (large format prints, digital outdoor media, static billboards, etc).

I interact with marketing agencies all the time, and I always think to myself how I feel like I could do a better job. This has led me to feel the need to start my own agency. I would be partnering with a friend of mine who currently freelances in digital marketing and event management. I feel like our backgrounds would compliment each-other well. I'm putting a list of potential first clients that would hopefully get us off the ground and able to run full speed with this venture right away.

My question to those who've done it before is what biggest mistakes have you made, and what were the best decisions you made?

Background; I live in a country where the industry is definitely saturated but most of them are built off of "links" and end up succeeding either way. The marketing spend here is quite high.

Which is the best way to calculate scalability and cost structure?

    Posted: 28 Jan 2020 07:01 AM PST

Hi reddit, I have a question I cannot seem to fully model.

I'm opening a consulting firm and my Uncle (investor) wants me to model out scalability and a cost structure, but this isn't my wheelhouse.

Essentially, the question is if we reach a certain number of clients and need to hire additional employees, will it remain profitable?

I'm not sure the best way to go about this. Are there excel templates you could recommend me or am I out in left-field on this?

    How to split the bill/profit

    Posted: 28 Jan 2020 10:41 AM PST

    Hello reddit,

I'm looking for some advice. I'm not an entrepreneur, but I learn daily in order to be one. Long story short I have a working prototype for a "smart lamp"(it's not smart as it connects to internet, but it has a 'brain' that constantly reads info from sensors and controls different parts, it's an animated robotic objects that looks really cool in a living room, I will not say any further details about the object itself).

What I did until now: I thought of the concept, did weeks of research on how it can be done, bought all the necessary tools and components. I failed to complete the project from an engineering point of view. It took 3 months to find a friend that is willing to help just because the concept looks cool (I'm almost broke :D ). It took him 1 day to fix my bugs. After that I continued to test the product and him fixing. As I continued to learn about creating a product, found many issues like the different voltage for home use products on different continents, and so on. Now we are at V2 that should work flawless anywhere, anytime.

What I think I have to do next: As mentioned earlier I cannot afford to pay an employee. My engineer friend doesn't have the same energy regarding this project as I do, but we joke on the idea that we both work for my promises. Things move slow. The thing is we never talked about how we will split the profit, I'm pretty confident that there will be profit but I don't know if 1k or 50k, or quadrilions. Until now the expenses were paid by me, not for me to be the owner, but to show that I truly believe in this project, is at least I could do, I asked for his time and skills, not for him to risk any money. But there are also many steps ahead and I need to "hire" a marketing person to create a presale campaign. In order for anyone to join the team I want to have a clear proposal to ... propose to them.

And here comes the question from the title: How do we split the imaginary profit(after productions, shipping costs)? Each pillar member should be skilled in his area of expertise. How much should I get? My friend? Future marketing person? Accountant? Only the founding pillars will work without a salary, depending on the campaign results, me and the engineer will build the devices, or hire a few technicians to work with us. (Or if there will be trillions of orders, I will contract Tesla Gigafactory and for that I will be prepared with quotes from 2 alibaba factories.)
