Life insurance agent is avoiding my husband so he can't cash his account

    Posted: 31 Jan 2020 05:38 AM PST

Kansas. The title explains most of it. My FiL had a life insurance policy for my husband. When my husband's father passed, my husband got this LI policy transferred to his name. They send letters saying that they're taking payment out of the policy to cover the monthly payment. My husband has tried and given up on contacting them, because the guy avoids and doesn't return calls or emails. My husband even tried a ruse of opening another account for our kids to get him to respond. Nothing. This account is being slowly drained and I don't want that to happen. I'm now a beneficiary of my husband's account, but not on the account, so I can't try to contact them and get anywhere, only my husband can.

    TYIA.

    Edit: Clarity.

Thank you all for the replies. I think we have all of the options we can do. Have a good weekend! :)

[Las Vegas, Nevada] I am a teacher, the public school neglected to submit our work hours, they did it 4 days late, and failed to pay me and several coworkers on payday at least twice now, this time right before the end of the month.

    Posted: 31 Jan 2020 12:48 AM PST

The first time they cut me a check the next day. Now they are saying that because their payroll system changed and can't do that, and that I won't get paid until the 5th of February. My bills are due today and I can't pay them.

I did everything correct on my end, I submitted my timesheet to them. I have proof that I did this. One of the school managers literally spoke to the payroll lady in person to submit and approve my timesheet the day that she was supposed to, and she even said that she did already. She and the assistant principal instead waited 4 days later to submit and approve it, even though they could have done it anytime and and even approve it on their phones. The labor board said they can't get involved with public schools. The school board doesn't care to listen as far as I know.

This has happened to a few of us more than once now, and we don't know what to do. We're all living paycheck to paycheck and will be late on many of our bills and suffer consequences because of it.

I want to take them to court and sue them for badly neglecting to pay our wages on time, punitive damages as well, whatever we can do. Please advise us on what to do.

[UK] My mum was just sexually assaulted in our own kitchen by a man claiming to be a tree surgeon

    Posted: 31 Jan 2020 05:21 AM PST

Just an hour ago I was waking up upstairs and heard my mum talking to a man in a situation that seemed uncomfortable. I could hear how nervous she was, and the situation seemed strange. Once he left my mum came upstairs and broke down in tears, explaining that the man just stripped on her in the kitchen and asked her to feel his penis.

She's now absolutely terrified and I'm worried for her. We live in a house that we can't move out from and we're both disabled. He knows where we live and the security on our house isn't very secure. We're worried that if we report him to the police then he will come back here and do something, as he clearly lacks impulse control.

He first came to to the house on Wednesday asking if he could go upstairs and he touched my mum's hand and said "what are you prepared to give?" in response to her telling him she couldn't afford the work he was offering. Then he knocked on our door multiple (4) times on Thursday, the last knock I answered and he offered a product which he was giving away, I told him I'd have to ask her and he said "okay, get her to come out and see me down the side" then we stayed in the house and locked the doors. Then finally he came into the house today, asking "it's cold out here, can I just come in to warm up" so she invited him in for a cup of tea whilst she was doing the washing up. He didn't even ask for the tea, and instead pulled down his jogging bottoms and asked her to touch his penis whilst telling her she was "really fit" and asking her to scratch his back.

My mum didn't really know how to react. She's been raped before, and her experience with men is very rough. She called him a tart, saying he was being very forward and unpleasant. Feeling scared, she tried to ask him out of the house and he eventually agreed saying that he'll come back at 11 on Monday.

Neither of us are very sure on if any laws were even broken. At best I can think of indecent exposure, so I don't know if we call the police they might just end up warning him and then he'll be back. I don't think it's even possible for us to prove what he did, as it seems like it would be our word against his. Is calling the police a bad idea? Neither of us know what to do.

[Update] I tried to get my mum to speak to the police and she started screaming at me in absolutely refusal. She was in shock after the incident and finished a bottle of vodka we had left from Christmas.

Am I able to make a statement? Or does it need to come from her? She's not cooperating with me and refusing to speak to the police if they come. The morals are getting complicated, as she'll never forgive me for phoning the police but I'll never forgive myself if we don't. Do they need to speak to the victim for a statement to be issued? I'm worried because the alcohol she's consumed since might be used against her and I really don't want this guy going unprosecuted.

Moved out 2 wks early, came back to find landlord threw away my furniture

    Posted: 30 Jan 2020 05:38 PM PST

    Please help.

My lease at my old apartment is up Jan 31st, but I decided to have movers come on the 15th so I would not be rushed to transport leftover items, and ensure it was properly cleaned, etc.

Today I went back to my apartment to pickup the last of my things, and found that $4k worth of furniture was gone, as well as bucket after bucket of construction supplies, indicating multiple unapproved entries, dating at least to the 22nd, as confirmed by my housekeeper.

So not only had my landlord organized multiple construction projects in the apartment without any prior notification from her, or explicit approval by me — but ALL of my outdoor furniture has been thrown out. I checked in the alleys and office areas, and it is gone.

I am thinking of writing an email to her stating these events and stating I trust she will correct the situation by returning prorated rent since the 22nd, as well as returning my furniture in the condition I left it or reimbursement in full, as my lease agreement was seemingly abandoned on her end, and she took it over as her own.

    Or is this a lawsuit?

Edit: This applies to California law

A couple from Romania is suing me for something my deceased grandmother did

    Posted: 31 Jan 2020 06:46 AM PST

While I was born in Romania, I am a US citizen and have lived here for the past 21 years. My father passed away when I was 1 and my brother and I inherited some land from him. It wasn't until recently that we found out that our now deceased grandmother forged our names and sold it, illegally. My aunt, who still lives in Romania, has recently gone to a couple house that have built a property on "our" land. Yesterday, I got a letter in the mail from this couple's attorney suing my brother, aunt, and I for property right issues. The letter demanded a signature and passport number. I have never heard of a legal document demanding a passport number, and Romania is still rather sketchy bureaucratically speaking, therefore i'm not providing one.

My question is, can they legally come after me in the States? I literally had nothing to do with the whole situation and am just NOW finding out about all of the drama. Plus, my signature got forged....

    Thanks!!!

My dad died of alcoholism and now someone is sending me menacing packages containing alcohol.

    Posted: 31 Jan 2020 12:54 PM PST

My dad was abused as a child and the trauma caused him to drink himself to death. I am teetotal and live a rather secluded life at the moment.

Recently, I have been receiving cans of lager with a note attached saying "it is only a matter of time :)". I don't know who is doing it but can I go to the police about it and would I be able to trace the sender?

Coworker pulled a ladder out from under me and is now lying to.my boss about what actually happened

    Posted: 31 Jan 2020 07:41 AM PST

Today at work I had a coworker pull a ladder out from under me. Was sent home about 30 mins ago. I was installing pipes at the top of a 12 foot ladder. My coworker pulled the ladder out from under my in which I had to grab the beam to keep myself from falling. I dropped the pipe I had in my hand in order to grab the beam. I got down and screamed at the guy and he pushed me. I screamed at him and called him a bitch. My journeyman comes running around the corner and at that point the guy walks away and I head downstairs to call my boss about what just happened. Once my boss comes he gets my side of the story. The other guy said the reason he pulled the ladder out from under me is because I threw my pipe at him. To which my other co workers said they heard a pipe hit the ground and then a whole lot of yelling. I dropped the pipe I didn't throw anything. There were no witnesses to any of this. People were around the corner but no one actually saw anything. Its just my word vs his at this point. Is there anything I can do in this situation or am I just fucked?

Cell carrier allowed authorized user to remove primary without consent..

    Posted: 31 Jan 2020 02:22 AM PST

Okay. This is actually a really long story and I'm so tired I am seeing double. If this doesn't make sense please allow me to retry in the morning. I need advice though.

To loosely and briefly sum it all up

I am the primary account holder and my social security number is tied to the account. I am responsible for charges made. My ex was an authorized user. He was allowed by my cell carrier to move my lines and devices off of my own account and onto one he had just opened. I had no consent in any of this, nor did I have knowledge of it happening, and had less power than the authorized user in every scenario of the events.

I was told by an agent, "Getting my account back required his permission, yet moving me off of it didn't require mine." Eventually I was able to move him off of my original account and take control of mine again only they didn't take into consideration that he opened up a few new lines and bought brand new phones and that the charges would stay on my account.

I was hit with a $362 phone bill and still stuck with one of his lines on the account still. I have not been able to get it removed still. I had to split my payments because I cant' afford the lump sum and they kept deactivating my phone. At the beginning of the month I paid them 132. For the second payment I had to tell a representative that I was working and would pay soon even though this really wasn't something I should be held responsible for.

The rep had the nerve to say, "Sorry you feel that way but unfortunately a bad breakup won't get you out of this bill." I thoroughly took offense to that. I said that I don't appreciate that sort of judgement and that it was the carriers fault for allowing it to happen." He stated something about how we all regret things sometimes and that's life. Shortly after I responded my case was moved up to the next level and he was coached.

This is where I am now. I spoke with a representative who seemed ready to help. After explaining my story a little bit again (this would be the 4th or 5th time) my case was escalated again. The new agent basically said I could have whatever I wanted from them. The agent understood the severity of the claim I was making and said they would reverse all the charges brought up. My account was credited $200 and my service was reinstated. I was told my remaining balance was $70. I paid my balance and then started doing mental calculations... I paid $200 and they credited $200... How do I still owe $70 after it being $362? By this time we had already switched agents and this one was about to switch out too. I was tired of explaining my story and said I would wait for the original agent to get back on and try my claim again.

This is where I am now.

I have paid my bill $200. The lines on my account are my cell phone, my second device, and a brand new Note 10+ that I'm assuming was my ex's. My last conversation was with a rep who specifically told me, "I will need your ex's permission before I can move his line off the account and onto his."

It's funny that I was told that. Really funny. Because 3 agents have said this, yet they had no problem not asking me if I could be removed off my account. They had no quarrel taking me off, opening up my ex's new lines and phones, and charging me for it. But as soon as I, the primary account holder, have a suggestion it's got to be given the okay first by my ex lover.

The amount of stress this whole situation has put me under is crippling. I had to take out a loan from borrow's subreddit. I have spent countless hours on the phone or on chat with agents being harrassed or judged or lied to. I am literally at the point where I think I want to press charges against this company for allowing this to happen and then belittling me for their mistake. Their policy specifically states that only a primary user can make these changes.

My goal here is that I want my cell phone bill credited for the past two months charges. All of them. I would also like the phone that their employee sold to me and dropped before I had ever touched it paid off and warranty exchanged because it has had issues since I got it. I want my second device to be free again, like it was originally supposed to be. Lastly I want monetary compensation for the time spent dealing with agents. If they continue to berate me or give me a hard time, I want to completely press charges against them. I believe my identity was allowed to be stolen due to poor training of their employees and instead of admitting to their mistake they attempted to convince me it was mine.

One specialist has reached out and offered anything I wanted, as I mentioned before, but I haven't heard from them since. What advice does anyone have for me in this situation?

    • Before anyone asks.. The ex is being handled in a separate situation in which I do not need advice. Thank you.

If an 18 year old were to run away from home could the police do anything about it?

    Posted: 31 Jan 2020 12:05 PM PST

So basically my gfs parents are crazy. They've taken everything away from her. Her phone, her car, they won't let her close her room door, their forcing her to work for them and idek if their paying her, they've taken all of her college money she saved up(atlesst 14k) and Gave it to her brother, they said when she leaves for college she's leaving with nothing. She wants to leave home but like she wants to run away. If her parents got the cops involved could they even do anything about it? She's 18 so technically she's an adult. We're in South Dakota and she wants to come and live with my family

[Seattle, WA, USA] Landlord knocked a large hole in our wall without notice

    Posted: 31 Jan 2020 12:00 PM PST

Hello Reddit, currently dealing with issues with our landlord and want to see if we have any recourse.

[Background] 3 of us have lived for ~20 months in an apartment in Seattle (Originally a 1 year lease, re-signed for a second year). Before we moved in, our apartment was a 2 story apartment with 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, and a kitchen upstairs, with a large living area and garage downstairs. After the previous tenants moved out, they split the unit in half. They added a third bedroom up top, and walled off the stairs. We never had access to the downstairs area, but in our lease we had access to the two parking spots in front of the garage.

[Event1] 01/10/2020 8:00am We get an email from our landlord that they are beginning construction below our apartment for the next ~45 days and we could no longer use the parking spots, starting that day.

[Event2] 01/11/2020 Our hot water was knocked out for about 5 hours. I let the workers know and they fixed it quickly and I believe it was an honest mistake. I mention this only for contrast with the next situation.

[Event3] 01/27/2020 5:00pm I get home and notice our hot water is out again. Our landlord says she will investigate, getting back to us at 01/28 5:00pm saying that "plumbers will be installing a new hot water heater for your unit tomorrow" at 10am and asking if anyone will be here (no one would because we were all at work). To skip the negotiations, my roommate agreed to take a day off work yesterday 01/30/2020. She said they would be there at 8:30am and it would take 3hrs. They show up at 9:30am and worked for 6 hours installing the water heater. To install the heater, they knocked down the drywall installed where the door to the stairs previously was. The plumbers left at 3:30 with no answers to how long the hole in the wall would be there, the general contractor was long-gone at this point and we didn't have his contact information.

[The Hole] So now there is a hole the size of a doorway, holding the water heater AND most importantly, a 12.5ft drop right next to it that connects to the below construction.

[The problem] We have a puppy that we are concerned for its safety (we made a makeshift barricade to keep him away from the drop). The temperature of our apartment has dropped several degrees due to the access to the outside (due to construction the garage door does not close all the way). Our landlord says she will try to get the General Contractor back this weekend to fix it but I feel that leaving a hole at all (much less for several days) with no prior warning is unacceptable.

[Proposed solution] Our lease ends June 1st, but we would like to move out on March 1st. The rent will be cheaper than looking in the summer and we will be in a more stable situation. What are the chances of that working? If not, do you think we would have a case against her. We're not vindictive and do not want to needlessly go to court, but we feel this situation is inappropriate.

Landlord wants us to go on roof with hot water, pickle juice, and dish soap to break up massive ice dams

    Posted: 31 Jan 2020 07:53 AM PST

This is in northern wisconsin. We went to our management company to let them know we have so much ice on the roof that water is leaking down the side of the house and freezing. They said they would send someone out to take care of it . It's has now froze our door so it can't fully open or close. We told them we can now not secure our residence. The property manager then went on google and said my partner should go up there with a mixture of hot water, pickle juice, and dish soap. It is a decent sized 3 bedroom home. There's a lot of roof and it's covered in feet of snow and ice, the ice dam itself is probably close to a foot of ice. I'm afraid of parking in the driveway because if it would fall it would cause serious damage to the cars. We don't have a ladder big enough to even get up there and I feel that not being a professional and not having the right equipment would be pretty dam dangerous when it comes to climbing ice covered roofs. We've also never dealt with this before. He's not going to do it but if he were to go up there and try to do this on their direction and was injured at what fault are they and what fault would lie with us? If damage occurs to the house because this isn't taken care of can they take that out of our deposit? Can we hire someone, we know someone who does this as a living, and then deduct that amount from the rent? They already have threatened us with some stupid stuff before so I don't really trust this company so I'm just trying to cover my bases.

President of Non-for-profit sells himself property for $0. Is this legal?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2020 08:34 PM PST

So a non-for-profit was gifted a property roughly 15-20 years ago.

The president of the non-for-profit decided to sell himself the property for $0, is this legal? And what are my options to pursue, legal or civil?

I have more information, but Idk what to share. If you need more please ask.

If there are no options, can I make an anonymous tip to the newspaper? It's a small town, and it'd definitely be big news, but I fear I could end up in trouble.

Injunction Hearing for a restraining order I placed on my ex’s gf to keep my 4 year old safe.

Employer is requiring us to get credit cards

    Posted: 31 Jan 2020 04:05 AM PST

Hello all, obviously a throwaway here as I don't want this connected to my main.

I'm a US Government employee under DHS, we have recently been informed that we all have to complete training on new Govt Travel Credit Cards. At the completion of this training we will be required to sign a form acknowledging we want this and shortly after go online to submit our personal information for this card.

While they have said that it will only be a soft credit check and that the card will not show up on our credit reports, several of my coworkers and I still do not feel comfortable with this. The purpose of these cards is to negate anyone submitting a form for a travel advance payment and upon returning from travel the balance will be paid with money from our travel vouchers/per diem with the remaining still going to our bank accounts.

But what will happen if there is a delay in voucher processing as we have had in the past or if someone manages to use the card for fraud? I feel like that would all end up being on me and negatively effecting me in the long run.

Can I be forced to sign up for this card if I don't want it?

Corona Virus: Air China canceled flights-booked through third party, can I get a refund?

    Posted: 31 Jan 2020 06:32 AM PST

My wife and I (Americans) have our honeymoon scheduled for March in Taiwan and purchased our tickets through a third party site for Air China. We were notified that they have canceled our flights, and the third party only refunded half of it. We're still out a significant amount of money and would really like to get that other half back.

Since it wasn't direct through Air China, what are our options? Are there consumer protections for us?

Is Air China still obligated to get us the other half because they are the carrier and canceled their flights on us?

Virginia. iPhone went missing from my hotel room, but I was provided with a full refund... whaaat?

    Posted: 31 Jan 2020 12:57 PM PST

Hi! I would say I'm a frequent traveller, and this is the 4th time I'm in US ad 3rd time in Virginia.. and yes, I KNOW I need to take care of my stuff, place to safe, keep an eye on belongings, but... I was such in denial something like that could ever happen to me.

I was staying in a middle size hotel of a huge chain for 2 weeks and I'm leaving the country this Saturday (so I'm still in the hotel). This Monday I've signed a funny card for a brand new unpacked shiny iPhone (and headset) I've bought for my significant other as a gift and placed all that to my suitcase, zipped. I know you should probably place expensive stuff to safe but there was no safe in the room and I was just hoping covering this with my clothes and dirty panties would work. I did not. I've came back from work 8 hours later and the phone (and headset) went missing.

Searched though the room, found nothing. Called a hotel manager, he and his colleagues searched though the room, found nothing. Took screens of my purchase and checked the door entry log this day. The door was opened 3 times during my absence by two employee keys - housekeeping person and housekeeping manager.

So we've called the police and the case was registered.

Because it was late and the night manager could provide me no specific information, we've decided to wait for main manager to come in the morning and talk this though. I was expecting for some sort of refund (I believe the innkeeping law covers such cases, but the VA refund rate is waaaay less then the phone price), I was so sad I was even accepted my destiny and decided simply buy another phone... but after she talked to housekeeping manager - she PROPOSED TO PROVIDE FULL REFUND, by cash, credit or same phone. I took the phone option and we bough new phone instead of missing one.

That's kind of wow! I could not be any happier I've got a refund but...

Now they are asking for original receipt of the missing phone. They refuse to give an original receipt for the phone they bought for me. They do not answer my emails, even 'Thank you' email. They are stating 'we've contacted apple and we're going to find the phone by IMEI code we just need an original receipt'.

So I'm confused, sad, happy and suspicious at the same time!

So what are your thoughts? Should I provide them an original receipt? Should I fill in a complaint/note to the general Customer Services department? Need your advise!

Work charging approx $1200 for data overage on work phone

    Posted: 31 Jan 2020 11:15 AM PST

Hey guys, work hit me with a payroll deduction (approx $500) today with no notice. When I talked to them, they explained that the amount was to cover accumulated data overages on my work phone over the past few months, and that there's still about $700 they plan on taking out over the next few checks.

When they gave me the phone, there wasn't any mention of data limits or overage fees, no one signed anything, and I was told to "just use it like it's yours." There was also nothing signed (hell, thee was no notice whatsoever) before the payroll deduction

I've had plans to move to Europe next week for about six months, and was planning on working up to the day I fly out, so I canceled my personal cell thinking it was one less thing I had to worry about.

So now I'm looking at a significantly shortened check a week before I go, and another after I arrive in Europe. (My job pays three weeks out.)

If I had known about this months ago, I obviously would have handled things differently, but now it's really put me in a bad spot.

Is there anything I can do in this situation?

Edit: Location is US, Florida, and fixed some grammar.

Getting birth cerficate, ssn, etc. for moving out in secret?

I'm moving out in secret - everything is paid for and planned, I'm being added to the lease - but what I need to know is how I would obtain my birth cerficate and social security number. With those I could get an ID (mine is expiring soon). I have an abusive family who will stop my plans (take away my things i paid for) if they knew, so I can't ask them. I need it to apply for colleges next January and to get a job in the city I'm moving to. thank you.

Relative passed away with 3 handguns, what is legal around moving them/getting rid of them?

    Posted: 31 Jan 2020 05:11 AM PST

My aunt in Florida had three hand guns and passed away Friday (7 days ago as of this writing). My mom and I are down here packing up her estate. Neither of us own any guns, have ever trained on how to use/store them, are not registered for them. I don't think they were mentioned specifically in the will. Neither of us have felonies, the most interaction we've ever gotten from the police is for speeding tickets.

My mom wants to take them home, I think because a neighbor told her that if she reports them to the police she'll be arrested or fined for illegal possession. I think that must be wrong. I'm also very uncomfortable taking them - not only do guns in general scare me, but my father is a narcissistic alcoholic and the thought of staying in the same house with him where he now has access to guns scares me.

What can I do? I don't know that my mom really wants to keep them, she just believes she'll be arrested if she says anything. I tried to google this but can't find what happens if you suddenly have a firearm.

Medical proof breathalyzer was wrong, can I sue OSCA? OSCA self-incriminates on phone.

    Posted: 30 Jan 2020 08:14 PM PST

QUESTION: I can provide OSCA with medical proof that my breathalyzer was wrong, due to gastrointestinal issues I have had for the past two years. Isn't it illegal for OSCA to refuse to let me retest, when it has cost me my job? How can OSCA refuse to accept the results of a doctor? Isn't this a form of discrimination? Can I sue OSCA, and be retested? Has anyone else every been wrongfully terminated because of erroneous results generated by OSCA? I want to sue OSCA for refusing to let me retest. I do not want to sue my employer, whose hand was forced because of OSCA. I just want my job back. Also, got OSCA on the phone admitting they've done this to people with diabetes. See below:

SHORT CONTEXT: I am on camera at work with coworkers and fully accounted for the whole day before my breathalyzer test. I had not eaten the whole day, and I threw up before my exam because of extenuating gastrointestinal issues I have had for two years, since having parasites. I also drank a health-aid kombucha, before my exam, to settle my stomach. The test was not random. It was scheduled by MY secretary and approved by ME. OSCA gave me a breathalyzer test and I blew a 0.044, only 0.01 over the acceptable testing range. 15 minutes later, they retested me on *the same machine* and the result was 0.040. Even if I had been drinking, what did I drink? A thimble-full? OSCA said I could contest the results, I saw my doctor, got a note, and can provide proof of the issue for two years. Stomach acids and gases can warp the results of a breathalyzer. OSCA, however, refuses to accept these results and has barred me from retesting for six months. OSCA now tells me I can only contest the results of a urine test.... but my urine test came back completely clean. Breathalyzers, however, cannot be contested at OSCA. Furthermore:

A representative at OSCA said that people with diabetes have been barred from retesting for six months, even when their diabetes could have affected the results of their breathalyzer test. How many people have lost their jobs because of medical conditions OSCA refuses to acknowledge and how is that legal?

And I have now lost my job.

I can provide the full context if needed.

New job not sure where to ask

    Posted: 31 Jan 2020 12:24 PM PST

Started a new job, nothing like the description...advertised as $8-$11 then find out it's only $7.25. Was informed I would have to do all my required training on my own time at my own cost after I was hired. Paychecks are weekly, today I was told I wouldn't get my first check until the start of my fifth week and it would be two weeks behind after that. Told them I would need certain days off due to foster care at hire, first day comes up in three weeks, told they need me and I couldn't take it. It's a daycare with multiple locations (8 I believe) in Oklahoma. Is this normal?
