Appearing Busy: The Biggest Obstacle to Strategic Thinking

    Posted: 27 Jan 2020 09:34 PM PST

"Iknow you must be incredibly busy…" Many preface their email requests with this. It might even feel like a good ego massage to the respondents!

Being busy, slammed, swamped or up to your eyes, whatever you call it, is considered a marker of status symbol. The busier you look, or you actually are, the more 'in-demand' and 'sought-after' you come across.

Whatever your skills and interests are, with enough time and effort, you can start earning money from them

    Posted: 27 Jan 2020 07:24 AM PST

There's been a fundamental shift in the world ever since the internet became widely accessible. Today, you can create an online one-person micro venture practically in any part of the world and find a way to earn money from it. The amounts you do get will not be huge - at the beginning, there will be no money at all. However, if you persevere and keep investing time and effort, you will reach something that's a revenue stream - might be a trickle in terms of direct dollar value it provides, but it will be there sooner or later.

The trick is to establish how much time and effort you can sustainably invest into this. At the same time, you should invest as little (or none at all) money before the venture is proven viable. Once you get this measure, which can be anything from one hour per week and zero dollars per month, you have to stick to it no matter what. This is the part where most people fail - let me use the example of a YouTube/Twitch/Mixer video game content creator.

Now, this is a super-competitive field and everyone and their mom have a gaming channel. It's something anyone can set up and get going with very little effort. However, many hit a brick wall when they don't get the results they're after (which are mostly the very murky "get real popular real fast"). At that point, they might double or triple their efforts and still get nowhere near that murky goalpost. They slowly get disappointed at that point, abandon any schedule they had and the channel dies off (as countless did already).

However, anyone with practically any angle can attain a gaming audience and then grow it. After a bit of time, they can also find some way to monetise their presence. They just need to keep going.

I believe that this applies to practically anything you can set up online. With the world as your possible customer base, endless supply of free tools and services (and information sources) and all the time you can spare, I really believe anyone can make something that is both satisfying to run (after all, any micro venture is something you built) and which also provides some money as well.

One of our employees has evidence and has been for the past 7 months getting sexually harrassed by the main manager that is in charge of hiring and firing us and that department. What should we do, what can we do? Im planning on talking to him but this is also my first time going through this experience. Im looking for some guidance.

    looking for help & advice

    Posted: 28 Jan 2020 03:18 AM PST

Little about me, I have a waste recycling yard that is closing down, as it cant generate enough money to continue. I made a fairly poor wage for owning a company of 6 lorries and 8 employees, I would come out at the end of the year with £25,000 after taxes. My wage was actually lower than 2 of my employees to try and keep the business going aslong as I could. I have epilepsy which while not a huge problem can rear its ugly head which can cause an upset. I stay very close to the property. I have a good business knowledge or running this place for the last 15 years keeping it going even though my father was old school and was not keeping it up to the standard sepa and the government wanted so I had alot of work on my hands improving the business and keeping it open. I was working 6 days a week at 60 hours a week with additional hours at home doing paper work. Never been scared of hard work or gettting my hands dirty.

The property has a large old stone shed and a old cottage. The land is about 2 acres.

The advice I'am looking for is what to do with the land/buildings. I dont want to sell the land, its been in the family to long and as they say you can only sell something once. On one side is a busy road with alot of passing traffic and on the other is a river. With university flats containing about 400-500 student across the road. It sits in the corner of 3 villages 1 is low income, 1 is low to mid income and the other is mid income. I though about converting the old shed into a coffee shop and running it myself and the cottage into an airbnb. However the shed would basically be a start from scratch and the cottage would need alot of work done as it has not been looked after so the outlay would be large for those which I assume would take far to long to repay itself. The premises has 2 entrances either side of the small cottage. I would be willing to generate money to invest back into it if I knew that it would recoup its self quickly. Ever idea I think of I check online to see how people with those ideas done and worryingly they all seem to struggle. Weather it be a coffee shop, barbers, soft play, unit rental, land rental. Obviously its the internet and you cant take peoples words as fact but reddit seems the only place that people are being truthful and helpful.

Ideas pop into my head and seem to be shot down quite quickly when looking into them.

land rental value atm is about £10,000 a year.

On one hand I have an option to start a fresh doing something that I want to do but on the other hand I have a fear I could loose everything by making a bad choice.

Any advice even the smallest suggestion would be great or further questions.

Sorry for the rant I just though asking ideas from outwith family and friends.

    Hot sauce trying to sell

    Posted: 27 Jan 2020 05:55 PM PST

I have developed a new formula for a great testing habanero serrano black currant sauce. I want to make it to order and start selling without registering a company and all the approvals at first. Any experiences with similar concepts? Etsy's or kickstarter or Ebay? How to test it in a larger population? I tested it with friends but only a few enjoy this type of food. No time for farmers market unfortunately. Btw. I'll repost it in the smallbusinnes or entrepreneur reddits for their ideas. Thanks

Process Improvements - hear me out

    Posted: 27 Jan 2020 08:40 PM PST

Is there anyone out there who has experience or know someone who has a sustainable "process improvements" consulting firm? Hear me out!

I find myself very board at the 2 year mark working for a company. I'm in my 3rd industry change and 4th job. I typically hire in for a role, master that role, and all the while improving company processes and documentation.

It's almost like after everything is improved and fixed and I transition to a production role, day to day grind, and get super board.

I know I want do my own business. The thought of being capped by a boss/owner and working for their dream... I just can't do it.

Is there a market for someone who likes to experience all industries to come in as an outside firm and help companies with their internal process need to: - improve info gathering - improve documentation - improve inefficiencies - improve profitability - improve communication channels

    What do y'all think??

First time poster and have a qurstion about spouse business partnerships.

    Posted: 27 Jan 2020 04:44 PM PST

I am the sole proprietor of my business. The business entails mainly graphic design, product photography, creating ads and A+ content for Amazon.

My wife can do some of this. I've read that the only thing we need to do for her to be a 50/50 partner is just agree to it between each other. I read that a verbal contract is just fine between spouses.

That being said, and if true, would I have to put her on a payroll? All the money is pretty much going back into the business and expenses for now. I don't expect profit for another year at least.

If it's not that simple what steps do I meed to take to make this legit. I live in Virginia but haven't been able to find much information except the "verbal agreement" mentioned above.

My boss asked me "how much more money should the boss make than his employees?" - How do I respond to that?

    Posted: 27 Jan 2020 01:34 PM PST

It's the time of year my yearly review (next week) - and asking for more money. This was his initial response.

I feel this is somewhat complex, so I will attempt to keep it short and to the point.

I am a doctor working as an associate for another doctor (owner/boss). We have work roughly 50% of the time in office, seeing patients, and 50% onsite - going to companies and providing specialized massage to employees.

I have been at the company for a bit over 5 years, which is a long time for an associate. My salary has increased roughly 25% in that time, but it is still below where I want it to be. When I started, my boss said his goal would be for me to be in office 20 hours, and onsite 20 hours, something we nearly accomplished this year. With that, I still made roughly $75k. Don't get me wrong, that is not bad, but to balance out $250k in student loans, that number still needs to go up. There lies the problem. If my goal has been reached, I asked him, what is next? What needs to happen for me to make $100k or more?

His initial response was for me to get more companies to go to, ie make more money for the company. My issue is that is that my time is filled. For me to make more money, it relies on me to get a new company, that someone else can go work at. It just seems a bit off for me.

He often states that we make roughly the same, which I know is completely false. He may choose to take a salary that is comparable to mine, but I know that the company makes far more than that.

    Here are some numbers/facts:

-Benefits include malpractice: $3200/year and 401K matched to 3%

    -He is paid $200-$225/hour onsite - I get $45/hour

-The overhead is MINIMAL!! Portable table (one time buy) for <$1000, supplies in a travel bag around $300 and papers for our notes/history/consent forms maybe $50 yearly.

My thought is yes, he "should" make more than me, but as the owner, if there is a money short - it should fall to you, or your employees will leave.

I know that a single company that I go to for 10 hours a week, pays us more than my yearly salary. If I am to go out and find other companies to work with, why would I not just keep them for myself.

My biggest concern is advancement. I am "ok" with my salary right now, if I know that x,y & z will happen to get me to a higher salary. But he will not give me any idea of what that looks like. As a 36 year old, married with 2 kids and a BOAT load of student loan debt, I need to know that I can advance financially. He tells me that he is going to sell me the company when he retires, but it is all lip service.

Am I way off on this? Put me in my place if need be...educate me please!

I feel I need to be paid for the services I provide, regardless of what that means for his salary. That is simply how you keep employees. Especially good employees.

Quick questions about no B.S. web and e-mail hosting, and do I need WordPress?

    Posted: 27 Jan 2020 06:50 PM PST

TLDR: Recommendations for no B.S. web, e-mail, and domain hosting for part-time professional business with low web presence? Do I need to learn WordPress?

I did a couple quick searches of this sub before posting, and I didn't find anything too relevant or recent, so it might be worth bringing up.

I am starting a business focused on design, engineering, and other tech services. I do not anticipate very much traffic for a long time, as the first couple years are going to be part time. I just want a fairly polished and simple site, where I can list my services, give contact information, and maybe show a few pictures or other examples of my work. Something professional for people to land on if they actually click or type it from a business card.

Obviously there are a TON of web and domain services out there. To the point where I have no confidence in search engine results. Sites like Cnet or PCMag will do "reviews" but they seem like shill articles to me. I have no confidence that those publications aren't glorified advertisements.

Can anyone recommend good services for my needs? I've read that it's better to get domain and web hosting from two different services, so I plan to do that. Regardless, is there any real difference between the major brands when it comes to my low needs? Also, is WordPress too powerful of a tool for something like this?

    Any advice is appreciated.

Contacting an employees new employer in regards to getting equipment back?

    Posted: 27 Jan 2020 01:48 PM PST

Long story short, I had someone work for me for a very brief time and they have yet to return assigned equipment. I've been trying to get in touch with them, but they've rejected all mail and blocked all phone numbers to voicemail.

I found out they work for someone else in the same industry and I'd like to reach out to that supervisor to request that the employee get in contact with me. I am not specifying any reasons why or even that she was a former employee of mine.. simply "please have so and so get in touch with me".

I just want to make sure I am not crossing any boundaries or doing anything illegal here. This is in PA.

Posting a loss in first year....

    Posted: 27 Jan 2020 05:24 PM PST

My partner and I started a healthcare business in October 2019, and we didn't generate any billables for the year. So, everything for 2019 is all expenses, and we need to know what tax forms we need to use for the company, as well as how to claim the loss on our respective personal taxes. Now that we've started generating billables in 2020, we'll be using an accountant at some point, but we think we can get away with not using one for 2019. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Production Metric

    Posted: 27 Jan 2020 05:18 PM PST

Trying to find a good measurement to gauge how our small shop is doing with production. Something that can easily be measured and given to the crew. We manufacture different items each day with different selling prices and costs. I know the number of hours each person works each day, the cost of the items and the total volume of material that is used each day. Each of these items varies each day so would like to start measuring how well we are doing or (not doing). I was thinking if we produced $1500.00 of product in a day and we used 50 hours of labour for that day, our production rate would be $30/hour?? Not sure if this is a good indicator... Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Marketing/narrowing down niche

    Posted: 27 Jan 2020 08:34 PM PST

    Greetings,

I run an online clothing brand that is based around unity, anti-discrimination and equality. I get a decent amount of traffic but I have hit a wall as far as marketing is concerned. I'm wondering if I need to niche down even more and locate more of a narrowed audience.

I'm targeting activist and people who believe in social, gender and racial equality.

I've been established for about 2years, fully trademarked and all of my business ducks are in a row.

The name of the brand is Global Mind Apparel. G.L.O.B.A.L is an acronym that stands for GENERATE LOVE ONCE BOUNDARIES ARE LOST.

I will leave the site below in case anyone wants to check it out. Any feedback on marketing, branding, ads, targeting and working with influencers is greatly appreciated.

How do you start to learn about small business financing?

    Posted: 27 Jan 2020 10:24 AM PST

This is an absolute beginner level question so assume I know nothing (not even terminology, (obviously I know terminology)). Where would someone like myself start to learn the basic concepts in small businesses financing like paying yourself and taxes, deductions and such? Basically whats the easiest to understand resource on this that gives someone at least a blue print on where to start when the do start making money? I always see isolated concepts being asked and partially answered but know "step by step guide" so to speak.

    POS for Retail/Wholesale business

    Posted: 27 Jan 2020 02:59 PM PST

I've run a search for "POS" on this sub and I've seen lots of suggestions for Shopify, Oliver, and Zoho (among others) but none of those quite hit my needs.

I'm currently using Windward System 5. It has never worked "great" but it's worked. Until I ran their last update, and now my system is nearly broken. So it's time for a new POS/inventory management system.

Here's what I use feature wise:

    1. Has to be on premises. Internet stability is not 100% here and downtime is expensive. I have hardware (server, PC's, barcode scanners, slip printers, laser printers, label printers, etc).
    2. Has to run on either Windows 7 or Linux. Windows 10 is a non-starter for now.
    3. We process a high volume of customers with a small staff. I need high efficiency from my POS - things like keyboard shortcuts (I have Logitech gaming keyboards with G-Keys for extra shortcuts) and mostly keyboard based input. I need to be able to run through an invoice without touching the mouse.
    4. We have many SKU's - something approaching 25 000. CSV based data import/export is a must.
    5. We have many items with unique "add-ons" special government taxes, non-government recycling fees, core charges, etc. Some of these fees are taxed, some are not. It's a mess, but System 5 was very good at this part.
    6. Receiving - we don't use scanner based receiving yet, but I'd like to in the future.

    Any suggestions?

    TIA!

Invoicing as a sole proprietor doing subcontract work.

I have been newly contracted as a sole proprietor with a company as a housecleaner. I was asked to subcontract my construction friend for repair work at one of their properties. He did the work and now I'm invoicing. Do I charge tax on the invoice? I am told that I add something for me, what would be fair? His charge is 3 hours at $35/hr and $20 for travel. Household repairs in Washington state. Thanks in advance!

Can I run a business while studying at a university ?

    Posted: 27 Jan 2020 12:25 PM PST

    Some background.

I graduated high school a year later than my peers because of the school I chose and after 4 months of university I left because the programme wasn't interesting to me.

Now this leaves me 2 years behind my peers when it comes to my university education as I plan to attend another university in September of 2020.

I'll be 21 at this point. This is very important.

Naturally there's a lot of pressure from my parents to finish my university studies and not bother with any business ventures as they might distract me from studying at 100 percent because they are worried Ill have to drop out again and then Ill be too deep into life to focus on starting another uni. Best case scenario I finish uni at 25 or 26 now. And Im worried they have a point.

    So now about the business.

I worked part time in gastronomy for +5 years and I know the business in and out. I came up with a very original concept for a wedding bartender catering service that I haven't found anywhere after many hours of searching .

I want to specialize on using local Ingredients, make it look and feel traditional to my country's customs which is a very popular trend right now and build on that ( using ceramic drinkware for example etc. )

I am also inspired by a concept that makes the bartending process very effective which consists of making premixes for drinks. You make the premixes beforehand and act like you make the drink on spot because you put it in a shaker. Fast, smart and effective. the gist is that I come up with lets say 8 tasty and somewhat original drink recipes that use local alcohol and ingredients, give them an original name ideally something that resonates with people ( something with my country's customs and traditions, names of some national figures or writers I'm not sure yet )

I want to build this whole thing on marketing, I know a thing or two about making websites, I have some basic knowledge of graphical programs so I could make all the promotional material myself and I also have some basic knowledge of SEO marketing. I want to build it on good SEO, great looking, professional website and graphics.

My target customers are weddings. Why weddings. They are a seasonal thing here from april to october which leaves me some free months to fully study in the months that are most critical at a university.

Now. The costs are not astronomical as I am working fulltime at the moment. I could probably start this business on a $1000-1500 not counting the car which i would probably first rent for every gig. I need a bigger car for the portable bar and equipment.

I feel like I have a solid business plan in a field I know really well that could support me while I study, however I am somewhat worried that if it actually works out it might consume all of my time and I really would have to decide between my university education and my business.

What are your thoughts ? Is it possible to run a business and study fulltime ? Do you have any experiences with this lifestyle ? Any tips and insights are welcome.

    Sustainable Goretex-like Material Startup

    Posted: 27 Jan 2020 01:56 PM PST

My brother asked me to help him market and explore social media in an effort to help grow a water-based polymer textile company. Their product is essentially a coating that would be used on outdoor gear, backpacks, and thicker apparel. What are some things that are important to you all that could be the cornerstone of their mission? It obviously takes a lot to grow, but the heart of their campaign currently seems to be falling a little flat. They have avid outdoors people funding the venture out of pocket. Any tips or values that you look for when buying from sustainable businesses?

    Thanks!
