Is CPA impossible if you’re dumb?

    Posted: 27 Jan 2020 05:22 PM PST

Back in high-school I would study for those entrance exams. I remember taking the ACT like 3 times and my highest score was like 25/36 , poured a lot of hours in studying but couldn't get any higher so I am kind of retarded. At that moment I consider myself dumb because people around me were scoring 35s without trying.

At this point I'm in college but kind of regretting majoring in accounting because I heard the CPA exam is gonna be hard as balls. So now it relates back to my question ^ .

For those who work for the Big 4, do you even wear a suit to work anymore?

    Posted: 27 Jan 2020 02:06 PM PST

I haven't seen people wearing suits in the Big Four. Did I waste my money on suits lmao

Career progression for non-masters, non-CPA, industry accountant

    Posted: 27 Jan 2020 09:19 AM PST

AKA the opposite of this sub :P

I'm trying to get an idea of career / salary / title progressions for those who have taken the route in the title.

I'm currently a year and a half into having my bachelor's degree, working at a private firm as a staff accountant, making 51K (midwest, low COL.)

Trying to figure out my next step. How much experience do you typically need to jump to the next tier? Would that be a senior staff accountant? something else? And is there a good salary expectation to have. Thank you! Kinda lost right now in the early stages of the career.

    Tough day in the office

    Posted: 27 Jan 2020 04:41 AM PST

I woke up thinking it was all a nightmare but turned on the news and well it's still there... "Kobe has died at 41." Before I continue I also want to mention that I have all the family's and friends of the victims of that crash in my prayers and hope they are able to come out of this tragedy stronger and a better version of themselves.

It's insane to think that someone you've personally never met, an individual whose idolized by millions of people, can have a lasting affect on you. He was truly the person I admired as a kid, I was always trying to mimic him on the court. I remember going to bed with his jersey on, wearing it under my dress shirt to go to church, I remember always arguing with friends and my brothers how he was the best to ever do it. I just can't believe it still. I spent the second half of yesterday crying, as I currently am right now. But also, just looking over his highlights, listening to interviews (favorite one being on the "The Corp" with Big Cat & ARod). I just hope he was able to hold his daughter and find comfort together in those fleeting seconds before the crash.

I wish I could call off today but I can't, I just hope I don't randomly break down in the middle of the day today.

Which one of you is this?

    Posted: 27 Jan 2020 01:15 PM PST

    Which service line? (Deloitte Australia)

    Posted: 27 Jan 2020 03:39 PM PST

I'd like to work in Big 4 but dont know which service line to apply for. I got an offer for tax but realised its not what I want.

    What I do want is:

    • good exit opportunities. I want the ability to work in any industry, or even in any location

    • opportunity to travel and work abroad (or even interstate).

    • my end goal is controller/cfo. Are there certain pathways you have to take to get there?

    • to work with other people as much as possible. I dont want to be doing my own thing for most of the day.

I was given an offer in tax and I realised it's the exact opposite of the things I'm looking for. (Please correct me I'm wrong) tax is highly specialised and dependant on local laws so not many exit opportunities.

I've never heard of cfo's/controllers starting of as tax grads and I've read most tax advisors work by themselves most of the day.

I think my options are between financial advisory and adult/assurance. It seems like everyone starts in audit. Is there a particular reason why?

    Does it Matter which B4?

    Posted: 27 Jan 2020 08:58 PM PST

Aren't they all the same? So say if I get with PwC, should I care about Deloitte?

Obviously I dont mean their clients but culture/work life and expectations etc.

    Posted: 27 Jan 2020 01:57 PM PST

I have just started studying accounting because I love it and that's what I want to do as my job but I found my family and my friends not supporting my decsion saying that accounting is a dying career and it will be fully automated in a couple of years. is that true?

also what certificates/skills should I have in order to get a high paying job and not get replaced by a computer?

    Is industry easier?

    Posted: 27 Jan 2020 12:18 PM PST

Every day I come into work, and it's a new headache. It's like I constantly feel like I'm struggling to keep my head above water, and as soon as I start to feel good I get new shit dumped on me.

Anyone else ever feel like this? Does it get better or should I find a new line of work before this gives me an aneurism?

I'm deciding what major I should pursue in college and was wondering what realistic starting salary I should expect as a public accountant (B4).It'd be cool to hear from people's personal experiences (including their state/ country.)

    Online vs on campus

    Posted: 27 Jan 2020 03:02 PM PST

I am at university starting my first accounting course. I will be getting my degree in accounting in two years. Today, I begin fundamentals of financial accounting. However, I've found that it's 100% on campus. I'm used to hybrid online/on campus courses. There is an option to switch to a 100% online course, but I'm not sure I'd be able to learn as much there. I like classes where we go to campus for lecture and then do all our work totally online. But now I have to choose between one extreme or the other.

Based on your experience, which should I do? I absolutely do not thrive in a classroom setting. I hate that. But this seems like something that would be too hard to learn on the internet all by myself—an instructor seems important, but maybe I'm wrong. Maybe it's an easy class.

Is it possible to intern out-of-state?

    Posted: 27 Jan 2020 11:02 PM PST

Currently a soph but I want to intern out of state my junior year. I'm gonna be commuting this summer a FT internship and I already know the scenery is going to depress me lmao. I really, really, REALLY don't want to stay in AZ for another summer. I also just like traveling in general.

I have a cousin in Chicago (so I could use family as an excuse I guess). But the places I'd like to intern at would be either Cali or NY. I probably sound overly ambitious but honestly if I could go out of state that'd be a blessing.

How should I reach out to recruiters? I'm currently in BAP and the Spring mixer is coming up!

Accounting practice problems on paper/tablet or Excel?

    Posted: 27 Jan 2020 07:14 PM PST

Currently in inter 1 and i'm deciding on transitioning to Excel for all my practice statements/journal entries/bank recs etc.

I currently just write out my entries by hand onto my Surface Pro but i feel like I need to spice things up especially as I get into these big boy classes.

Stop making me have to use a complicated SUMIF when I'm creating my check value. I'm sick of your shitty cell+cell subtotals being counted twice.

    Stuck.

    Posted: 27 Jan 2020 10:32 PM PST

Hi guys, I'm currently 19 and sophomore studying accounting in my second semester of my sophomore year of college. While I do believe I am smart enough to graduate with this degree, I will say I just simply don't have a passion for office jobs :( However, I also know how important and blessed I am to be in the position I currently am in which I will be able to graduate with No college debt if I stick with accounting. (Parents agreed)

I was wondering how logical you guys would think it would be to go to a nursing major. My idea is to finish the accounting degree, work in accounting, and if I really hate the office job that much, Id just try to enter into an accelerated nursing program for bachelors degree holders. I would switch now but I don't think thatd be the best bet for me considering It would add a few years of school to me (pre reqs, nursing school can be competitive to get in to as well). Also, I would not say I am STRONG when it comes to science, and my mind works much better with business concepts. I currently have a 3.7 GPA but do not love what I have been studying. I also am not 100% sure I would LOVE nursing but I do think there is a chance I would enjoy it a little bit more than accounting.Do you think it's dumb for me to keep continuing a degree in accounting in which I am not 100% sure i'll enjoy. Do you guys LOVE your job?
