How to determine the pay of new positions...

    Posted: 30 Nov 2019 05:35 PM PST

Ive been looking to fill my main leadership role in my business with a new employee that will take a significant amount of the work load off me, allowing me to have more time to work on other ventures. While i know i should look and see what other people are paying for the same job, how should i make sure it's a reasonable amount for the job? This position is basically all the work the owner does minus some obvious stuff. Also, this would be the first time i turn over a large amount of control to an employee, so how should i do this and what advice would you have for me? Thank you!!!

Going from investor to full partner.

    Posted: 30 Nov 2019 07:01 AM PST

So, I dumped a sizable investment into a brick and mortar business to help them open their doors for 13.5%. Since then, I've taken a very active role in the business and dumped more money in (structural improvements) and now am at 23%. With this, I now own +20% in two companies. The first one has been a major thorn in my side and constantly reports a loss every year and this one is already profitable after only being open for 3 months.

Is there a legal way to combine my ownership of the two companies under one holding company even though I'm not an accredited investor?

Thanks for any help or insight you may have. I've cross posted this to a few places.

Spammed with 1 Star Reviews on Google from the Same Disgruntled Customer

    Posted: 30 Nov 2019 06:27 PM PST

So I had 1 disgruntled customer who has been spamming our Google page with 1 star reviews from different accounts with different personas (eg: one is a married dude, the other is an older mom, the other is a young woman). I know they're the same person because I don't have any records and security footage of any of these people and they review the exact same businesses with the one star reviews around the same time. I'm not sure what to do.

I've reported the comments and will contact Google but am not hopeful that anything will get done. Should I respond to the reviews? What should I say? Should I wait to see if Google will do anything or should I respond ASAP for the sake of future clients Googling us. I'm worried that since this person is obviously deranged and calling them out will make them write even more bad reviews. I own a hair salon with lots of nearby competition so our rating is very important to me :/ What would you do?

How to determine if there's a want in your area?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2019 11:21 PM PST

Hello! Sorry for the phrasing, I'm not sure how to put it shortly.

I'm doing very early stages of researching in running your own business. My dream is to run a genuine arcade. No bars or bowling alleys attached, no ticket prize games (I swear I'm going to scream if I see one more "arcade/game room" be nothing but ticket stuff), just go in and play.

But over the last decade, arcades have definitely fizzled out. I'm not sure if there'd be enough demand for one. I don't know if there'd be enough interest between home/online gaming and the stigma of arcades being for little kids winning ticket prizes.

How would you begin to find out if there'd be a want for one?

Complete business noob: How would I go about officially becoming a small business?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2019 01:44 AM PST

So, I've been doing electronic repairs locally, as well as buying and reselling on eBay and locally for a little while now. It's been steadily picking up speed and is quickly becoming a legitimate source of income, not just a side hobby anymore. How would one go about "Signing up" as an official small business? With the proper tax recognition and such?

Someone I work with told me that if I was small business, certain aspects of my job would be tax deductible (I.E, upgrading to a new soldering iron or another tool). Is this true?

Sorry, I don't mean to sound like a newbie, but I'm realizing that I have no idea what I'm doing when it comes to the more "government" side of small business, but I should really figure it out!

    Small construction business needs advice

    Posted: 30 Nov 2019 12:19 PM PST

So my sister and brother in law have started their own dry wall construction company. I'm writing for them because they aren't tech savvy for Reddit. But they started the business almost two years now. The company is starting to grow faster and are now at 60-75 workers in multiple job sites. My sister is manually entering employee's names and different pay rates in a spreadsheet every week to pay the employees. It is starting to get out of hand and taking so much time to do this. The company is possibly getting jobs with big hotels that's are getting built starting next year. Are there any ways to make this faster with a software or other ways. They are also trying to get certified as a MBE/WBE business. Are there any recommendations on easy ways to keep track of every employee, where they are working, and payroll? Any advice or recommendations would be highly appreciated.

What big challenge does your business face with social media? maybe I can help

    Posted: 30 Nov 2019 06:06 PM PST

    Hi all,

I currently work in the silicon valley as a brand marketer for one of the biggest men's attire stores in the country. My dad runs a small local business and in my spare time I run his social media - this includes: creating social media ads and managing 1k/month in ad spend, creating videos for different placements (stories, feed, IGTV, messenger), email and text marketing, creating signage for his mall stand, and more. I really enjoy helping him because I see how much he has sacrificed + the effort he puts into what he does and I respect that he decided to work for himself. Anyways, what's your SMB social media challenge?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2019 09:20 PM PST

    Hello all

Started a online printing business and thoughts id share here in case anyone needed and prints. The quality of the prints and pricing is superior. Feel free to look around and let me know if you have any questions. There's a lot more products that will soon be added but we do anything from regular business cards to large banners. We don't do designs we strictly print.

    Small Business Saturday Check-In!

    Posted: 30 Nov 2019 11:47 AM PST

How is or was (depending on when you read this) your Small Business Saturday? In the midwest it's been strange. The weather has deterred a lot of people we think. Our downtown is usually slammed with foot traffic and bags today, however we've hardly seen any. Starting new ad campaigns already to help fill in the season for the lack we got today. Also noticed AMEX gave way less materials, and no totes whatsoever this year. Hope everyone else is having a fantastic and great Small Business Saturday!

I don't have a business background and have only used what I've been able to try and learn from other filmmakers and some various research online.

For reference I operate out of Connecticut. Thanks!

Retailers, How do you come up with promotional pricing?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2019 11:58 AM PST

This is a curiosity of mine. I work at a wholesale distributor, however I dont interact with our customers(all of whom are retailers, of course), nor have I ever really done anything with sales, nor do I understand the mechanics behind how retail works when it comes to pricing systems. I can infer some details based on my thorough understanding of how our complex wholesale distributor pricing system works. I also have a vested interest in database design, something which is related to my education, and semi-related to my job. Databases are often built in such a way that their internal design is markedly different than the perspective provided to end users, so I need to consider details which might seem pointless or meaningless from the perspective of an end-user... hence my seemingly pedantic question. I'm looking to get in the mind of a retail business owner in order to best understand how to implement a system which properly accommodates promo pricing. Just in case anyone wonders, No, i'm not doing it for work, I would rather call this project call it a resume builder for future employers.

When you have a sale, coupons, or provide some kind of promotional pricing, how do you come up with the promotional price? When determining the sale price? Do you base it off of your cost, the final sale price, or even just use a flat price and ignore the markup%? What price do you use as the basis for coming up with the promotional price?

I understand that ultimately it will likely be branded to the customer as '% off' the sale price', 'buy 1 get 1 free/half off', '$x off', or something like that, but how do you actually go about the process of coming up with the price?

How to keep products ahead of competition?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2019 02:59 PM PST

A giant company like Amazon keeps building warehouses to store more products, and ship faster. Apple or any tech company innovates faster. Tesla is the first to bring down their price of their electric vehicles. Nike has some of the best cutting edge sports performance tech.

In general how should a small company look to build up economies of scale, or optimize on certain features(different features than big competitors because they have more money to spend). Is it just to spend money to gain the ability to do R&D, design, manufacturing to get harder to make features?

Business management software for IT company

    Posted: 30 Nov 2019 07:04 AM PST

I am looking for software to help me standardize and provide documentation for my business and employees.

I have read e myth and I am trying to get all my documentation in order, for example, job descriptions, employee handbook, workflows, and standard operating procedures. I started off using a server to hold Word documents in appropriate folders, but this does not seem like it is the best method. I am looking for a way for the files to be easily shared and edited as need by my employees that I have assigned to writing specific portions.

Any software for this type of things would be great. We currently have a knowledge base through Freshdesk, but this is more for finding solutions to IT issues we have already solved in the past. However, maybe it could be utilized.

TL:DR We need software to standardize the writing of business documentation such as SOPs workflows, employee handbook, and job descriptions. I would love some feedback.

Looking for advice regarding business leadership

    Posted: 30 Nov 2019 10:35 AM PST

So I've been working at the same job for around 7 years now and it's gone from ok, to terrible, to pretty great. All of those changes were likely unrelated to the actual job, I had some tough personal things to deal with and I feel like I'm finally getting on top of my game.

Now I'd like to really push myself to see what I can accomplish without burning myself out. I wear a lot of hats, systems admin, project manager, and account rep to name a few.

I think in order to grow our business and feel successful, I need to start approaching things as a business owner rather than just an employee. I have almost complete autonomy, which is double-edged sword. How can I go about reframing my outlook to think more like an executive or business owner? Are there any day-to-day activities or metrics that I should be more concerned with? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Best way to get good client feedback

    Posted: 30 Nov 2019 10:11 AM PST

Hey guys - I've been doing my professional services business for 6 months, and I think it's time to get some good feedback from clients which should in turn influence the direction of my business.

What are some ways that have been effective for each of you? How do you keep it going consistently?

Also, how do you deal with the challenge of unhelpful client feedback? For example, if a client really wants me to sell for them (and sometimes they do), and I know I won't do that, I'd hate to create that expectation for them through a feedback session where they make that request.

How do you guys handle payments for service?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2019 08:58 AM PST

Hi guys, I've been trying to figure out how to do payments for service. I'm trying to start up a locksmith and I'm not too naive to understand that most people can't just drop 150+ on a service at one time.

So I want to set up a payment plan, however I'm not sure how to insure myself or be in legal rights if someone doesn't pay. So 2 questions:

One is this kind of payment model a bad idea? And

How do you guys handle monthly billed service where the customer already has the full product?

Any advice is accepted, and thank you for your help!

What are the downsides of having an employee scholarship reimbursement program?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2019 12:09 PM PST

I was thinking that a scholarship program is great for compensation because of the tax benefits. Also the employees could be paid lower now and the scholarship money is cheaper to pay out.

    [UK] Ecommerce Website Hosting Help

    Posted: 30 Nov 2019 08:05 AM PST

    Hello folks!

I'm starting a new Ecommerce business which will initially be fairly small with growth to medium mid-late next year. I'm not sure if I should just start with shared? Or jump on VPS straight off the bat, especially with black Friday discounts everywhere.

I plan on running everything through WordPress as Woocommerce is what I've used in the past for my storefront.

    Anyone have a host recommendation?

My budget is £20pcm I have some experience with server management Monthly traffic is going to be low as we build hopefully rising too around 20k over the course of a year and eventually 80k+ fingers crossed. Obviously I'm looking for 200k+ But time will tell.
