[NJ] Junk removal company damaged laminate floor. Will my homeowner's cover if they won't?

    Posted: 25 Nov 2019 12:03 AM PST

I recently moved and am preparing the old (now vacant) house for sale. I hired a company to come this past Saturday to remove a very heavy 36" picture tube TV and a 200 lb stand-up freezer.

The entire process was a comedy of errors and I now have two deep gouges and a 6-inch scratch in my previously unmarred, 20 year old laminate floor. The gouges are from the TV being dropped from a height of about 2 ft and the scratch from the freezer being dragged.

Since this happened Saturday I haven't yet spoken to them about what they'll do for me, but the movers took photos & I reported it that day to the person who set up the appointment initially. I verified they were insured prior to booking.

So my question is, if for whatever reason they aren't willing to do the right thing or are dragging feet, is this something my homeowner's policy is likely to cover? If so, would I then need to sue the company myself for the deductible?

I've never had something like this happen so I have no idea how the process should work. Just looking for some peace of mind, I guess. Any advice is appreciated.

Hit a parked car in NYC

    Posted: 24 Nov 2019 10:11 PM PST

Accident happened in NYC. My car insured in Maine. Other car has NY tag.

I was parallel parking, under a lot of stress because a woman was yelling at me and refused to drive past me even after me waving for her to pass multiple times. I needed to readjust so I pulled forward parallel to the car in front of me and when I reversed into the spot, my mirror hit the rear side of their car.

My mirror was completely turned backwards and part of it cracked. There are slight scratches on the other car that I think could be easily buffed out and a shallow dent. My friend said no one in NYC leaves a note, but I couldn't in good conscience leave so after calming down I found a different parking spot that I could get into more easily and then walked back and left a note with my contact info.

My question is, this car is insured by my mom. If she finds out I did this after not driving it for more than a week I am going to get serious verbal abuse. She is not in a healthy place right now mentally and I have to live with her peacefully if possible. My dad is a mechanic and can fix the mirror for me if i just tell him I was side swiped and buy the part. I really don't want insurance involved because I don't want my mom to know I caused this. Is there anything I can do when the person contacts me to help this situation? Is paying cash an option and if so, how do I know I'm not being ripped off? Did I do the right thing by leaving a note or is that really just never done in NYC? It seemed like it may have been a cab..it was a black car, does this change anything?

I was Rear ended and the driver admits in police wittiness statement to being on his phone.

    Posted: 24 Nov 2019 07:47 AM PST

Yesterday otw home I was attempting to make a left hand turn and had my turn signal on. The car behind me was on their phone and hit me going at least 40. He totaled his car and my truck might be totaled. I declined ems to check me out but told officers I was sore but I'm going to emergency room today. How do I go about getting compensated for this without going through an attorney. I live in Georgia too and I have Geico and the other driver has usaa.

Homeowners; Bank Requiring Dwelling to Cover Market Value

    Posted: 24 Nov 2019 09:20 PM PST

I'm trying to close on a house but my bank keeps giving me a runaround with the homeowners insurance coverage. My lender is coming back saying I need to increase my dwelling amounts (Coverage A) to cover the loan amount.

I understand it's the replacement cost of the house not it's market value. So I've called every major company and they all provide the same amounts. I have no idea how to get a policy that represents what they're asking.

    Mortgage Loan: 280k

    Coverage A: 172k + 50% endorsement.

Has anyone had a similar experience or know of a company that could this extended type of coverage?

studying p&c exam, any recommended infographics/memorization tips that you used successfully?

    Posted: 24 Nov 2019 08:34 PM PST

So far I've found some nice ones like WHARVVES and BIG AFFECT that can help me run down a short list of perils, im wondering if there is a source for all the different dp1/2/3, ho-2/ho-3, CGL, PAP, etc. etc. that shows an infographic that lists the coverage parts, exclusions, RC vs ACV, any other variable info in a bullet point fashion rather than trying to read 45 page chapters on each one...

i got thru 200 pages of my exam book in a few days when it was mostly just going over definitions/concepts, but it's taken me a week to get through like 50 pages because i just have to reread EVERY single line 4-5 times, and it STILL doesn't really click, haha.

im in a really bad situation financially and i really want to pass this exam so i will be able to keep this job, but i can't afford courses and such, i am really trying to make do with the exam cram book and flash cards so anything would help a ton! here is the outline for what i need to study if it helps (im also not really sure how to look up the state-specific reference codes more effectively?) i am trying to take it in bite size pieces but im having a lot of trouble retaining memory of EVERYTHING all at once

Buying a couple months of car insurance and then cancelling - possible?

    Posted: 24 Nov 2019 08:31 PM PST

In January of 2015 I was in an At fault accident. This accident is still popping up when I get quotes, but will be off come January 2020. Instead of buying a 6 month package, is it possible to pay month to month, cancel, then shop around for a new 6mo plan? Thanks.

Rear ended on freeway by driver with no insurance. First accident. Unsure how to proceed (WA, Progressive)

    Posted: 24 Nov 2019 01:38 PM PST

I was driving home on the freeway last night in the Seattle area. There was a wreck ahead of me. Traffic was stopped and you could see all the emergency lights. I was in the right most lane at a complete stop. I looked up in my rear view mirror to see a car approaching at a high rate of speed. I knew I was going to get hit. I heard him lock up his brakes and he tried to swerve at the last possible moment. My 2002 Honda Accord is totaled. It wouldn't even move from the spot. His car was totaled as well. Tow trucks for everyone. He was driving a 1992 Honda Accord.

The young kid came to my window when I was on the phone with 911 and asked if I was ok. He then said he was sorry but he has no insurance but he wanted me to know he has a really good job and he will pay for everything. I told him the state police will be there shortly to get everything handled.

While I was waiting in my car for the EMS/state patrol to arrive I was almost hit multiple times by other cars (and one semi truck). I had my emergency flashers on although none of my rear lights probably worked at this point. About 10 minutes after this collision an older guy in a Ford Ranger plowed into the car that hit me causing yet another wreck.

I didn't get to survey the damage (other than getting 2 pictures of my car) or talk to the other drivers. EMS spent a fair bit of time with me making sure I was ok. They wanted me to go to the hospital but I declined. I gave the trooper my license/registration/insurance. He came back later and gave me a sheet of paper with info from both other drivers. He said I was not cited for anything and said both other drivers were cited for multiple violations but did not elaborate. The sheet says neither driver had insurance. It only lists their names, addresses, driver license numbers telephone numbers, and vehicle info.

I have progressive auto insurance. I paid cash for the car. I own it outright. I have the state mandated liability insurance. In addition I have un(under)insured motorist coverage for both bodily injury and property damage. All 3 vehicles were towed. Mine was towed to a local tow yard. I called progressive about 4am to start a claim. The person said someone will contact me on Monday.

This entire process is new to me. In 29 years of driving this is my first accident where I've had to deal with my insurance. I'm not sure how to proceed. I have some questions:

    • Should I retrieve my Honda from the tow yard and have it towed home? I don't know if progressive will pay the towing and storage fees or if I'm responsible for those. I hate the idea of it sitting there accumulating storage fees.
    • The Honda was my only vehicle. I don't know if progressive will pay for a rental or if I need to handle that on my own. If they will pay I'm not sure how to go about that since they won't contact me until tomorrow.
    • I'm not sure if I should get the handful of personal possessions out of my car from the tow yard or just it sit there for now. There's nothing super valuable in there but everything in the trunk will be ruined from the rain.
    • My car is older, but it was in perfect mechanical condition. I had just finished all the preventative maintenance earlier in the year including new timing belts, changing all of the fluids, it has a brand new battery, and brand new tires. I had bought and installed a nice Bluetooth stereo earlier in the year. I'm not looking to get rich from this, but I would like to be made whole. I'm worried that I'm going to come out a loser at the end of this ordeal. I don't want a new vehicle, but I would want one in the same condition as mine.
    • I'm not sure if I should go see the doctor. There was no obvious trauma. They asked me about dizziness, blurred vision, ear ringing etc. At the time I didn't feel anything. I noticed when I got home last night there was indeed a low level ringing in my ears. Today for some reason one of my forearms is extremely sore. I have a pretty good bruise on my leg somehow. My neck feels ok but my back does not. I don't normally have any sort of back issues. The force of the impact quite literally broke the back of my driver's seat. After the collision it was laid almost all the way back.
    • I'm guessing there's probably 0% chance I see a dime from the kid. Am I pretty much just going to deal with my own progressive insurance on this one?
    • I have a perfect driving record. Are my insurance rates likely to go up from this accident?
    • Any other thoughts or recommendations?

Thank you for reading my post!

My neighbor is at fault for crashing into my non-op vehicle in California. But it's a bit more complicated than that...

    Posted: 24 Nov 2019 07:36 PM PST

I bought an old 1991 Corolla that needed a bunch of work, so I registered it as non-op a few months back when I transferred ownership at the DMV. I had been fixing the car in my garage and I managed to get it running just a few days ago, so I decided to get it registered. Thing is, you need to smog the car first in California, and the smog shop is literally right behind my house. It just takes a very short drive around the block to reach the entrance. What harm can possibly be done?

Well, just 2 days ago, I got off the driveway and just started driving down the street toward the shop. My neighbor was coming from the opposite direction. He decided to make a quick u-turn to park on my side of the road, but somehow I was completely invisible to him. He started making a wide turn and instead of waiting for me to pass, he accelerated right toward me. I sounded my horn and tried to steer clear of him, but my attempt was in vain and he crashed right into my driver's door. The collision attracted the attention of many neighbors, so there were plenty of witnesses.

The man apologized for the accident and offered to take full blame for it as he has full insurance coverage. I also made it clear to him that I have no insurance. Our overall exchange was friendly and we decided to contact each other some other day to negotiate a deal.

I went on to smog the car yesterday and apparently it passed with flying colors. Afterwards, I went to the DMV and registered the car as operational. Then I took the car to a body shop to get a quote and I was quoted $3000.

I met with my neighbor today and he said he'd rather have the insurance company deal with it. Apparently, some of his insurance buddies estimated that his premium would just go up by $10. He asked for a picture of my license and registration to file an insurance claim. I haven't sent him anything yet.

But you see, here is the problem: the car was still registered as non-op when the accident occurred. It was only the next day when I registered it as operational. Of course, my neighbor doesn't know any of this. Moreover, I wasn't even asked about insurance when I registered the car yesterday, so I still don't have insurance.

Given the very special circumstances of the accident, how do I proceed? Do I tell him that it was registered as non-op when he hit it? Do I mention anything about it at all? What about my temporary registration cards? I have the old one for non-op status and the new one for operational status, so which one should I show to his insurance company? Will they refuse to repair my car if they knew that it was registered as non-op, even through the collision happened right next to my house on my way around the block? And even if it were in operational status, will I be severely punished for driving a couple of feet without insurance? Should I run and immediately get some basic insurance to protect myself from such a punishment?

So many questions. I really don't know what to do now. I'm hoping that an expert can tell me which course of action is the best. I just want to get my car fixed without paying much out of my pocket and without making my neighbor suffer. Thanks for reading!

    Drive wise Allstate

    Posted: 24 Nov 2019 06:28 PM PST

I have been using drive wise for one year now. I got a discount the first six months for signing up. But no discount since, app says I have instances of hard braking and moderate risk driving (driving from 12pm to 11pm on weekdays).

I have been using drive wise to go to work, but feel many of the trips are to avoid accidents as cars ahead even with ample distance will slam the brakes. I have deleted some trips, but my projected savings is 0%.

Anyone have better luck or getting a discount with drive wise?

Current law enforcement considering a career as a claims adjuster

    Posted: 24 Nov 2019 05:43 PM PST

So I'm a five year law enforcement veteran. I have been looking at making a career change and claims adjusting was a career someone had recommended I look into.

Obviously, I have quite a bit of experience when it comes to accident investigation. That being said, would that benefit me if I were to make this switch? I like the idea of having somewhat normal hours and from what I understand, this is a field where I could put some of the skills I've acquired over the years to good use.

I don't have any particular knowledge when it comes to the inner workings of insurance companies, but any information I could get that might help me land a job would be great!

    Texas Kaplan online insurance classes

    Posted: 24 Nov 2019 05:11 PM PST

    Hey y'all,

I was wondering if anyone has taken an online course to get licensed? I've taken online classes before, so I know it's all about how dedicated/disciplined you are, what I'm wondering is how long would you say it takes to complete with 1-2 hours of learning/studying a night.

Any advice, suggestions, or ANYTHING is helpful. Thank you!

Subject to deductible in this instance means???

    Posted: 24 Nov 2019 04:11 PM PST

I'm looking at Oscar health, they have an 8K deductible

    Under visits it says:

Primary care visit to treat an injury or illness = $0 copay/visit subject to deductible

First 3 non-preventive visits are $0 copay not subject to deductible; subsequent visits are subject to deductible.

Specialist visit $0 copay/visit subject to deductible

    Preventive care/ screening/ immunization = No charge

Does this mean really, only 3 non-preventative visits are actually covered? I'm under 30, have never used 8K in health or anything close. Usually specialist visits until now have had a copay, and the rest is paid by my insurance.

Is this essentially, just bad coverage? Or is this good? For the life of me I can't tell

Ran off the road to avoid a deer

    Posted: 24 Nov 2019 03:34 PM PST

I ran off the road to avoid a deer the other day and ended up hitting the end of a white fence. It cracked my headlight and left some white paint on my car. I was wondering if I called my insurance(farm bureau) and told them what happened, would they only ask me to pay the deposit for the repair or would that also make my rate go up? Also I have full coverage if that information helps at all.

    Will homeowners cover this leak?

    Posted: 24 Nov 2019 02:46 PM PST

My family has had awful luck since moving into our home 2years ago. Our last big leak wasn't covered by our insurance because they deemed it a slow leak (shower pan liner failed and it rotted out our entire master bath down to the crawl space) As we are finally buttoning up that massive project, the valve under my kitchen sink cracked and leaked. The entire cabinet box is waterlogged, damage to drywall behind it (water is standing under the cabinet) and it leaked out onto our solid hardwood floors which are now buckling.

I tried to call my insurance and they only have phone coverage for auto claims on the weekend (Allstate) So I'm just wondering if any of you have experienced this before and if it was covered? I'm stressing hard core about this so anything to save my sanity till tomorrow morning would be much appreciated.

    Thank you!!

Does This Plan Synopsis Look Good or Bad?

    Posted: 24 Nov 2019 02:15 PM PST

I'm looking at Oscar Health's plans for those under 30, this is how they're representing themselves

    Oscar Simple Secure 2020

    Deductible: $8,150 / $16,300

    Prescriptions: 0% after deductible

Office visits : First 3 visits free then 0% after deductible

    Out-of-pocket max: $8,150 / $16,300

    $191.15/mo

Prescriptions: 0% after deductible, does that mean i have to spend 8K in order to qualify for any prescription coverage?

Basically - is this plan paying 200 a month for 3 annual doctors visits? Like maybe I'm misreading - for the life of me i can't tell if this is good or bad

    Confusion regarding car accident

    Posted: 24 Nov 2019 08:00 AM PST

I was recently in a multi car accident (S.C.) and am going through the claims process now. Per the police report, one of the other drivers was determined to be at fault, but all of the other companies say they're still determining liability. My question primarily concerns property damage and bodily injury claims. My car was a total loss, but I'm unsure as to whether or not I have a legitimate injury. I've have neck and head CT scans that came up fine, but also have lingering back pain 2 weeks following the accident. I'm really confused as to how to proceed, as I need the claim to be settled to get another vehicle, but I don't want it dragging on for months while I seek further medical attention. How is this typically handled? Am I able to settle bodily injury and property damage separately? Any advice would be appreciated.

Scooter write off, how do I know I'm getting a fair deal?

    Posted: 24 Nov 2019 11:34 AM PST

So my scooter was wrote off and I'm trying to figure out if I'm getting a good deal or not from the insurance company.

They offered me $1250 (plus taxes it came to $1400), but when I check online for similar scooters the cheapest I found was $1500.

When I called the insurance adjuster, she mentioned that she couldn't find any similar vehicles online to compare the price to, so she used a third party company who valued the scooters ACV at 1250.

I sent her 5 or 6 different examples of local scooters for sale ranging from $1500-2600. She said she would look at them and talk with her supervisor.

She did, and she called me back and mentioned that because of my declared value of the vehicle, the most they can pay out is $1500. I said that's fine because at least $1500 it will cover a new one.

I request a break down of what will be paid to me before I sign over everything, and when she sends me the breakdown it's as follows: ACV of the scooter is $1340, plus taxes = $1500.

So they've only bumped the value of the scooter up by $90.

My question basically is are they pulling a sneaky one here? Does the maximum amount the insurance can pay include taxes? It doesnt sound right to me, and I feel like they're trying to avoid paying me an extra $160.

For context I live in Vancouver, Canada.
