‘Something has to give:’ How long can the American consumer shoulder the global economy? Posted: 15 Oct 2019 08:45 AM PDT If the U.S. economy is headed for a significant slowdown, nobody told the American consumer. Even as economic growth abates and business investment and confidence has faltered in the face of an ongoing U.S.-China trade dispute, the U.S. consumer has continued to spend money and reflect confidence in sentiment surveys. The latest evidence is the University of Michigan's consumer sentiment surveyreleased Friday, which rose to a three-month high of 96, beating consensus expectations and remaining near record levels. The reading is bullish for U.S. equities as it predicts the U.S. consumer will continue to spend at high rate headed into the holiday season, but it also stands in stark contrast to other measures of the economy, including recent surveys by the Institute for Supply Management of the manufacturing and services sectors and measures of business executive confidence, which fell to the lowest level since the first quarter of 2009 in October. "I'm not sure if we've seen this disparity between positive consumer sentiment and negative business confidence at this level," Michael Arone chief market strategist at State Street Global Advisors, told MarketWatch. "From my perspective, something has to give. Either businesses have to be more confident, or you're likely to see more rollover on the consumer data." Pictures Raise Specter of Fake Evidence in 737 Max Crash Probe Posted: 15 Oct 2019 09:25 PM PDT https://finance.yahoo.com/news/pictures-raise-specter-fake-evidence-215233675.html (Bloomberg) -- Weeks after a Lion Air jet crashed in the Java Sea, killing all 189 aboard, an airline employee gave investigators photographs meant to show that a crucial repair had been properly performed the day before the disaster. Yet the pictures may not show what was claimed. The time displayed in photos of a computer screen in the cockpit of the Boeing Co. 737 Max indicated they had actually been taken before the repair was performed, according to a draft of the final crash report being prepared by Indonesia's National Transportation Safety Committee, portions of which were reviewed by Bloomberg News. The ISM manufacturing PMI being below 50 is a good sign for stocks. Posted: 15 Oct 2019 05:55 PM PDT It's counter intuitive for bearishness among CEOs to be a positive for stocks. Similarly, the chart below shows when the ISM manufacturing PMI is below 50, it's a good sign for future S&P 500 returns. Stock returns with below 50 PMI The 1 year return is 13.29% with a PMI between 29.4 and 50, while returns are 6.97% with the PMI from 50 to 77.5. The logic behind this is stocks price in the weakness before this report shows contraction. For example, if the PMI starts at 60 and bottoms at 45, most of the decline has already occurred by the time it falls below 50. The manufacturing sector has been weak for a while now. Everyone knows about the manufacturing slowdown. On the other side, everyone knew about the global cyclical expansion in 2017. Once it showed signs of weakening in early 2018, markets peaked. You can't just sell stocks because of bad news. You must consider what the consensus expects first. I genuinly believe Ford is a long-term hold. Dicuss Posted: 15 Oct 2019 05:41 PM PDT
It's currently trading around the mid to high $8's right now. They are going through a lengthy restructuring period along with a significant downgrade in credit rating. I do believe that the restructuring won't be pretty, but long term I believe ford can and will perform better than Tesla. They've been in the automotive industry they understand the name of the game. I added 100 shares to my position and plan on adding more over the course of a year. Edit: literally cannot go tits up [link] [comments] | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Significant Activist Trading Activity (Last 7 Days) Posted: 15 Oct 2019 01:17 PM PDT These are the latest Schedule 13D forms filed by activist investors in the last 7 days. Activist investors are investors that make an investment with the intention of influencing management in some way. There is evidence that following activist investors into investments can generate excess returns. Schedule 13G forms, in contrast, are filed by significant investors with no intention of influencing management (such as Index funds). There is always a lot of interest in insider trades, but what a lot of people probably don't realize is that hedge fund activity is probably more predictive of future returns than insider activity. The reason is that hedge funds (a) have large research budgets, and (b) have a choice where to put their money. In contract, insiders have no choice where to put their money, but only when to time their transactions. New FilingsThis table lists new 13D filings in the last week. A new filing does not necessarily indicate a new position, as investors frequently accumulate in advance before reaching the filing threshold.
Amended FilingsThis table lists amended filings in the last week, and is useful for monitoring changes in existing investments or when a fund closes a position. I have eliminated all filings with less than a 5% change in ownership. Significant Insider Trading Activity (Last 7 Days) Posted: 15 Oct 2019 01:16 PM PDT This is a list of the top 20 companies that experienced the largest change in insider shares in the last seven (7) days. The SEC defines an insider as any officer, director or 10% shareholder. It is not illegal for these people to buy or sell their own shares. In fact, since most of them get paid in stock options, it is expected. However, it is illegal for them to trade on inside information that has not been made public. So for example if there are drug trial results that are bad and not public, insiders cannot dump shares. That said, many people have observed that insiders - in general - seem to have a good track record at timing their purchases. All trades that are marked as part of a 10b5 plan are excluded from this report. Largest Insider Buying (Last 7 Days)Largest Insider Selling (Last 7 Days)

EuroEyes International (01846.HK) Soars 102% in Its Hong Kong IPO Posted: 15 Oct 2019 12:09 AM PDT EuroEyes International Eye Clinic (01846.HK) shares rose as much as 102% on their debut, the latest example of frenzied trading in small initial public offerings in Hong Kong. Morning trading volume almost equaled the shares sold by the German operator of eye clinics in the IPO, before the exercise of a green shoe option, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. The stock pared some of the gains, up 59% in recent trading. EuroEyes raised $75.9 million selling shares last week at the midpoint of a marketed range. Wild debuts popped up this month in a stock market roiled by violent protests and trade tensions, catching investors by surprise. Shares of software developer 360 Ludashi Holdings Ltd. more than tripled on Oct. 10, while Xinyuan Property Management Service (Cayman) Ltd. jumped 42% a day later. Five Hong Kong stocks have debuted this quarter after completing initial offerings below $100 million. The four small caps before EuroEyes surged by an average 53% on their first day, after adjusting for IPO sizes. The weighted return is the highest for any quarter since early 2017, data compiled by Bloomberg show. Hamburg-based EuroEyes derived 63% of its 2018 revenue from Germany and another 28% from China. The company reported 43 million euro in sales last year, up 16% from 2017. [link] [comments] |
