I'm Employee #2 and I'm Leaving After Five Years Posted: 30 Sep 2019 07:41 PM PDT I've been with this startup for 5 years. If you want to get technical, I was actually the first full-time employee as the CEO was splitting his time between his main job and this for the first 2 years. I've put a lot of blood and sweat into this SaaS as the lead engineer, DevOps, and whatever other hats I had to wear at times. But alas, this SaaS is still in the red after 5 years. Sales continue to be sluggish. I've continually disagreed with some of the directions we've taken. The company 401K was dropped this year and I only recently in the past few months received equity (shame on me for not pressing this). I'll be going from a small startup where I worked remote, to a fortune 500 in a large metropolitan area. I'll be giving up some freedom, but I think this is the right move for a guy in his mid-30s who feels stuck in a startup. I may be tooting my own horn but in a company of under 10 people, where I am the only engineer of a SaaS I feel like I've been the backbone of this place. I feel sad. I am worried about what will happen to this company. I am dreading putting in my two weeks. I legitimately hope they can find a good replacement, This will be the fourth time in my life I've put in my two-weeks, it's not usually easy. This one seems to be the hardest. Any advice on what to say to the CEO/founder? [link] [comments] |
Y Combinator is launching free 10-week online course on making startups. Posted: 01 Oct 2019 03:16 AM PDT I applied to them several times, but we weren't selected ¯_(ツ)_/¯ Now they are launching free online course and it's good chance to listen to their mentors. I guess, that many topics will be obvious, but still it's cool to listen to folks like Jan Koum (WhatsApp), Patrick Collison (Stripe), Steve Huffman (Reddit), Adam D'Angelo (Quora), Alex Schultz (Facebook) or YC team. They don't have an open registration yet, but I hope to check out this course. [link] [comments] |
GitLab CEO: “People don’t want to commute; they just don’t want to miss out” Posted: 01 Oct 2019 03:15 AM PDT Hey all! I just wanted to share an interview I've done with the CEO of GitLab here. We sat down to a 40 minute talk, all about building a company remotely, hiring the first people, scaling up and staying healthy. As GitLab is becoming one of the first multi-billion dollar tech companies that still are fully remote, I think this should be a great read for all of you here. My favourite quite (besides that one in the title) must be:
So even if you aren't building a team just yet, I think this is a good read on how things could become. Full Interview Here: https://nohq.co/blog/sid-sijbrandij-people-dont-want-to-commute-they-ju/ [link] [comments] |
Potential first time startup employee Posted: 30 Sep 2019 11:23 AM PDT Hi, apologies if this is not the appropriate place to post this. I am in the final round of interviews for a startup and am meeting with an executive in a few days for what I think is the final step. I am very eager to prove myself, and I think their biggest concern is that I have no experience in a startup environment. My professional history consists of working for two well established companies - one a nonprofit, the other a corporation. Can anyone provide any tips/reading recommendations to help me best present/prepare myself for the unique environment? I know I am a fast learner and able to make decisions on the fly, and go with the flow, but I am having trouble connecting it to my past experiences where everything can move so slowly. My field is HR and their biggest concern is turnover so I was thinking of making a business plan of sorts about recruiting strategies and initiatives - would that be too over the top? Thanks in advance for feedback/tips. [link] [comments] |
Beverage startup questions in Australia Posted: 01 Oct 2019 02:13 AM PDT Hi there, I thought I would ask this group (please let me know if I should post this elsewhere!) So I am starting a beverage product with a friend of mine (I'll save you from the detail) and we just have so many questions on preservatives, labeling, nutritional facts, etc. in Australia. It would be so helpful if anyone had suggestions, or experience starting a new beverage. We've spoken to a consultants, and we have a certified supplier that is providing the key ingredient.... let me know! [link] [comments] |
Some tips on labelling my product. Should I pay for branding by my manufacturer or stickers? Posted: 01 Oct 2019 01:37 AM PDT So my product is a hand held device. Packaging is a white cardboard box, this lid is held by a magnet strip and flips open to the device. Now. I was thinking would it be more or less professional if I create my own design and send them off and make stickers and stick that into the box and device and save money? Or pay the manufacturer a whole lot more money to get it printed properly onto the box and device? I'm only starting up, and this will be my first batch. Any help would be muchly appreciated. marketing strategy using provocative pun Posted: 30 Sep 2019 09:41 PM PDT After 20 years in the corporate world, I'm making my first foray into entrepreneurship. I have incorporated an entity (as an s-corp), secured the domain, instagram, fb, snapchat, and social media handles and am working on trademarking the name before hopefully going live with an MVP in early Nov. The business idea is based on building a brand around a provocative NSFW pun. Similar to "pussy hats," those pink cat eared hats that went viral after the Trump interview was released. My product has absolutely nothing at all to do with politics, but will I have a hard time advertising on the social media platforms I named - either via hashtags, ads, or sponsored posts if the product itself is (for example) clearly for cats but a common-usage profane interpretation exists? I am getting the impression that a lot of ad blocking / content blocking is done algorithmically and that there is, for instance with instagram, virtually no chance of appealing a decision to a rational human. I am worried that either I won't be able to market the product and business, or worse, that I will be banned from the platforms with no human intervention at all. This is my first ever reddit post, so go easy on me please. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Sep 2019 09:11 PM PDT Hi all. I have created a project that it seems that I can create a startup from. I have a couple of companies that are willing to purchase the product. It is a subscription-based software and charged per user. However, I want to expand this product more and am looking for ways to get more people to interviews and sales as well. How do you market Saas products and how to find potential users if you do not have connections or standing in the field that you want to sell it in? [link] [comments] |
Looking for tips from someone with experience in Tech/SaaS startups Posted: 30 Sep 2019 09:03 PM PDT Hi r/startups! My friend and I, both 21 year olds in college, have been beating around the bush on a program we developed which we think has serious potential. Here's the problem: were both too risk averse to really go balls deep on making that our career. We're both deans list Accounting students, I'm on a fast track at a Big 4 firm (shout out to my accounting dudes) and he has a pretty sweet industry job lined up. We could be fairly comfortable just dropping this, but neither of us want to let it go. All that being said, we're really excited about this program. It, in a nutshell, predicts NFL football games with a 97% accuracy and predicts spreads with an 86% accuracy (sounds like total bullshit and fake, I know). We've both been making decent money betting on games and spreads, but we think there's a lot of potential in starting a business and selling our picks or something. So here's where we need help/what we're lacking: -we need INVESTORS to fund all this stuff -we don't have any IP protection, which we definitely need -we need to form a business (lol, i know) -we need some help figuring out what the most profitable way would be to turn this into a business -we would like to hire an intern to run data and numbers (we just don't have the time to do the type of in depth research we used to be able to do) -we would like to hire someone to design a website for us -we would like to hire someone to run a social media page for us to help sell this -our school has an annual 'entreprenuership competition' where people pitch their businesses against eachother and the winner gets $5,000 cash to develop their business. Is that enough to fund what we need? So, does anyone with experience in this kind of stage of business development? How much money would we need to fund all of the things we'd like to do? Are we just total idiots and should accept our future corporate overlords? Should we just try and sell it and go on with our lives? Thanks [link] [comments] |
Quitting vs Cutting Your Losses. Need avice Posted: 30 Sep 2019 09:59 PM PDT My buddy recently enlisted my help w his new startup. Basically, he imports widgets from hong kong and resells them at a mark-up for a pretty good profit margin. My assignment was to create and manage the social media accounts for the new brand and direct traffic to the web store he and his business partner were working on. In turn, I get a commission of sales. I'm also independently selling by word of mouth and getting chunks of commission off those sales too. It's gas and bills money, but nothing too great. I'm just doing this on the side of my full-time job and college. Here's why I'm tempted to leave. He gives me really tight time-based assignments that often have nothing to do with the social media, but do require tedious photography and photoshop work. Since no one else can really do it, I oblige. But everything I submit to him he scrutinizes and rejects it, sends me to do it again. He promised to buy ads for our social media accounts, then falls through and puts it on me to just magically come up with viral videos or something. He can never get his inventory shipped to us on time so we go long periods with no inventory and I have no product to use for photos, then I get blamed for not posting enough. I've been in it a month and haven't made commission for more than 3 sales. But I know if I stick it out there could be very good money in it and I could do some of my best work. On the other hand, there's a voice in my head telling me to get the hell out and start my own business. I have a great business plan coming together and I just need a little more capital to get it started. If I pull out of this, am I a quitter or am I just saving time and hassle? [link] [comments] |
Native App or Cross Platform App? Posted: 30 Sep 2019 10:41 AM PDT I have outsourced a company to develop an MVP app for my startup. I am in doubt as to in which platform should i get it developed for. They have an Android developer in team and not an IOS developer yet. Someone advised me to go for Cross Platform app but this team dont have a developer for that. My startup depends a lot on this app. It is basically an app based startup. Now i am not a developer so i am confused on what to do. Advice required on urgent basis. Thanks [link] [comments] |
Serious question about legitimacy of a job offer Posted: 30 Sep 2019 08:15 PM PDT I accepted an offer with a startup within a niche business practice. I was skeptical at first because of the lack of information available online about the company, and any information that is available online, is max 2 months old. I met with the co founder and my worries were put aside because everything seemed normal for a new startup. They're paying me a good amount of money, and that's where it seems too good to be true.. as if there's a major catch. I have asked as many questions as I could. I'm a college grad so I am new to this. Is it possible that this could be a scam or a way of hiring to get some sort of tax advantage or something? I know it seems like I'm being paranoid but I can't help to be skeptical. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Sep 2019 07:40 PM PDT I'm curious about how you went about bringing your idea to life & if it was sustainable (if you are still in that company). Im in need of inspiration. I decided recently to go for it on my start up idea but am SO freaking overwhelmed. Thanks if you are willing to answer 🙏 I appreciate it more than you know. [link] [comments] |
When Should You Be Pitching To Investors for Seed/Seed+ Posted: 30 Sep 2019 12:36 PM PDT Hey Everyone, I've been working on my startup, we've got a great CTO, and interested from local businesses (nothing in writing yet, just emails expressing interest and some social engagement) Basically what happens it when i show people it, they get excited and ask me when they can use it - this has been usually pretty good. that being said - we've hit delays in the production of our MVP, i haven't sunk much money into this, and don't want to spend more money and am wondering when it's a good time to hit up Angel Seed/Seed+ We're working in AR at the moment. when do you guys think it's wise to crack open those conversations, and what does it look/feel like? Where to find startups/ideas to copy Posted: 30 Sep 2019 04:01 PM PDT I live in Denmark, a small country in Northern Europe. Population of about 6 million people. Startups, new ideas, products and service does not really reach us before the companies behind are basically global brands OR before a local copies the idea to the Danish market. The market is small, but rich and with high education rate and spending power, even among students and young people. I am looking to find startups that have a proven concept. Startups that already have a significant amount of traction, or even large companies that have not gone global yet. Websites, forums, facebook group.. Where is the best place to find startups/ideas to copy? [link] [comments] |
