If you have a medical lien, check it line by line!

    Posted: 01 Oct 2019 05:45 AM PDT

I'm nearing the finish line of a settlement for an auto accident. The other driver was 100% at fault. All in all I had over a year of various therapies and two surgeries due to accident-related injuries. One of the injuries was not fully diagnosed for about a year after the accident, with surgery taking place a year and a half after the initial injury; a word of caution about settling too quickly if there is ANY lingering discomfort or limitation from your injuries!!

My private health insurance company attached a lien to any settlement received, to recoup their expenses. This weekend I sat down and looked at the 25 page document wherein they listed all claims they considered accident related and expected reimbursement for. Initially I'd just assumed it would be accurate and correct, but I was curious to see what accounted for the nearly $55k lien. Going through line by line, I found over $10k in definitely not related medical care (things like thyroid and autoimmune condition visits, routine visits for ongoing care of preexisting conditions!), and about $4k in questionable/arguable medical care charges (a good example: being in a hip brace caused my gait to be thrown off and resulted in lower back pain, but the state of my lower back is within expected limits for my age, and was not directly caused by the accident, which both parties agree on).

Please take the time to review anything and everything, even if you feel like you're being a nuisance or nitpicky. I'll be helping myself and my counsel to have an estimated $15k more to our own bottom lines just by taking an hour to review these charges.

    Overwhelmed

    Posted: 30 Sep 2019 08:14 PM PDT

I rear ended someone 2 months ago in a drive through. I was completely stopped and reached behind me for my wallet , my passenger told me I was moving I braked but unfortunately I tapped the vehicle ahead of me. It was an old beat up car that had previous damage. The couple got out of the vehicle right away and started yelling things calling names and demanding my insurance. I exchanged with them willingly. Fast forward a bit after a hell of a time dealing with insurance ( trying to get a hold of them and ask questions ) I get through to someone to see if it would be possible to just pay for their "damages" and not go through insurance. They told me that it would be possible but since they are claiming soft tissue injuries and emotional injuries it has to go through insurance. I find it very hard to believe that they are injured from this. It was a love tap. Wondering others opinions. Is it possible? Can they get away with this? Is this insurance Fraud?

    Personal Lines Account Manager

    Posted: 01 Oct 2019 04:50 AM PDT

Hello! I have recently been offered a position for PL Account Manager at two separate independent agencies. At my current role as a broker at an indepedent I rounded out accounts and cross sold, brought in new business, and provided customer service as well.

As far as the PL AM goes, I'm looking for advice on how to be the best I can be. What type of organizational, time management, cross selling, referral, delegation, spreadsheet, etc. Information would be helpful? I of course hold my P&C license, and am interested in earning my CIC designation. I'm looking to grow whichever book I accept, provide amazing customer service, bring in new business, and maintain a high retention rate.

Thanks everyone for the replies in advance!

Sister crashed my car (only has a permit and insurance is under my name)

    Posted: 30 Sep 2019 01:01 PM PDT

Tried to look up relevant posts, but there's a few details that my case doesn't align with, so hoping I would get some appropriate feedback regarding my case. Sorry for the long post:

    Context:

Me: Live in a different city (about a 2hr drive from home) for college (21), so I left my car at home. Sister lives with my dad at home, and uses the bus to travel from school - home. What I didn't know: sister sometimes uses my car to go to school, groceries, meet friends, etc.

Sister: has a driver's permit license and still in high-school

The actual car: My mom got the for me 2 years ago, so it's under her name, but I have been making the payments for both the car loan and insurance. However, my mom is out of the states, and can't come at moment's notice.

    • Has about 30-40k miles driven, and I took it to the shop regularly every 60-70k miles

Insurance(progressive): My name only, and has only basic coverage (can't just opt out of insurance in US)

    Details:

Today, my sister got into an accident with another party/car (her fault) and now is awaiting my dad/other help that I asked for because I am unable to physically be present there. Car airbags popped, front is wrecked, believe it needs to be totaled, and to be clear: I do not plan on taking action against my own sister; she's an idiot, but still family.

    Injuries:

The other involved party - none. Sister says she feels pain in her arm, but nothing too serious.

What will happen to her, what will happen to the car, what should I do?

I really don't know what to do, so any help will be greatly appreciated, thank you.

Auto Insurance: Was rear ended in stop and go traffic, insurance wants to total my car.

    Posted: 30 Sep 2019 11:55 PM PDT

I have a 1991 accord that I'm very fond of.

I was rolling along in stop and go traffic and got rear-ended by a F-150, guy fell asleep at the wheel. He had Triple A insurance and admitted fault.

My rear bumper cracked and was pushed down a bit. Trunk was pushed in and dented but still opens and closes. Mechanically, the car was untouched, it runs prefect.

Received a call while at work and couldn't answer, they estimated the repairs at around $3k. They were declaring it a total loss since they appraised my car at $1800. And they are going to charge me out of that amount for changing the title to salvage. I would really end up with like $1600.

I've recently bought new tires, window tint, alternator, battery, Catalytic converter and other parts that have warranties. I've changed to Bluetooth stereo, new speakers, Subwoofer. The car only has 150k miles and I do all the servicing meticulously. The clear coat is still good.

Am I really gonna end up with my car still beat up and not even have enough to get it fixed? I can't find other cars of this model in this condition anywhere near their appraisal amount.

I'm calling in the morning. What can I do? I just want my car fixed, or to be paid the amount to get it fixed myself.

Claiming Health Insurance on Financed Purchases

    Posted: 30 Sep 2019 07:55 PM PDT

    Hi everyone,

    (Alberta, Canada)

I've recently been looking into laser eye surgery, and a couple of clinics in my area offer 0 down, 0% interest financing options. My question is that if I were to pursue this route of paying off my balance, could I also claim up to the allowable amount onto my vision insurance? Or would I just be better off paying off the entire balance and claiming through insurance that way?

    Thanks for your time!

Claim check incorrectly sent. How common is this?

    Posted: 30 Sep 2019 07:42 PM PDT

I filed a hail damage roof claim a week ago, insurance adjuster came out last week and today I got a notification that a claim payment has been made. It seemed very odd to me because the adjuster had not yet told me what he had computed as the roof replacement cost (took pictures and was going to compute it using google earth or something back at his office). He also told me that once I had selected a roofing company, they could just cut the check directly to the company since it would be under $50K. So I logged into their portal and see a check has been cut for a little under $50K and the notes indicate debris removal. No idea what that means as there is no debris removal. So I'm assuming that something got screwed up and this was incorrectly issued. The portal has no other notes about my claim or paperwork. It indicates the check is being mailed to myself.

I'm still waiting for my own estimate from a roofing company. Once I have that I will reach out to the insurance company to have the check canceled/corrected. But is it common for an insurance company to incorrectly cut a claim check? It seems very odd to me that there wouldn't be a series of approvals or double checks before cutting a ~$50K check.

    Advice re: Diminished value claim

    Posted: 30 Sep 2019 07:28 PM PDT

Background: I have a 2017 Subaru Forester 2.5i Premium. 3 months ago I was rear ended and sustained $5k worth of damage. Farmers Insurance accepted 100% responsibility and repairs were made which did include damage to the frame. Carfax now says "structural damage". I owe $15,500 on the car.

I filed a diminished value claim and was told they'd pay me $2400. My brother is an automobile appraiser (he mostly appraises luxury vehicles for private estates). Is it worth it to have my brother appraise my vehicle and submit to insurance company in an effort to get more than $2400? Or should I take my $2400 and run?

Insurance was cancelled - now none is available?

    Posted: 30 Sep 2019 10:18 AM PDT

We have a small software company. We unfortunately had a server event - with a possible data breach. We had insurance coverage, they handled the notifications, helped us deal with the problem. They subsequently told us they wouldn't renew us because we had had a significant claim.

We are in a much better and more secure space now (cloud server, etc.) We have had three brokers sound very enthusiastic and positive about helping us, but ultimately to no avail. Other than one who said we are a smaller company than they would normally consider, there has been no other feedback on why we can't get coverage. (We have excellent credit and no other claim history.)

We are just a couple weeks out from having no insurance. Surely there must be business insurance options out there? Even for companies that have had claims. How do i go about finding them?

Advice Needed - My Job Wants me Certified Property and Casualty

    Posted: 30 Sep 2019 12:32 PM PDT

So I work for a company that handles third party work for different banks. They started a new process which they seem to have mishandled, resulting in them immediately being overwhelmed. As a result, they are offering to have me certified in P&C personal lines in my state so I can jump in on this process (which apparently involves no sales, just the potential of adjusting coverage and thus the certification requirement). After getting into the work, they want me certified in all 50 states. My company is pretty shady at times, so I'm looking for some advice. They want me to be ready for the first exam in two weeks. Is this doable for me given that I have no background in insurance? Would this be a worthwhile career move? Assuming that my shady company is going to be shady and underpay me or throw me into a hot mess, what is the job outlook once I am certified and grow more familiar with this stuff? Thanks!

    Condo/Co-Op Earthquake Insurance

    Posted: 30 Sep 2019 12:56 PM PDT

Hello r/Insurance!! I've been reading a bunch of your threads, and I just wanted to say thank you so much for all of the amazing information you professionals in the industry have contributed! It has been incredibly helpful in orienting myself to the topic of insurance, and I really, really appreciate it.

Maybe you can help me think through a specific decision I'm making now? THANK YOU for any advice or guidance!

    Info

My wife and I are buying a condo in a housing cooperative in the SF Bay Area of California. We are putting 10% down on the $500,000 purchase, and are first-time home buyers. I have asked for, but not received, the master insurance policy from the Co-Op Board / HOA. My wife has some anxiety, and so we view buying insurance as buying some peace of mind that helps improve her quality of life. So we don't mind spending a bit more, but not irresponsibly so.

Question 1: Is this enough HO-6 coverage?

We are purchasing HO-6 coverage with $100k dwelling (part A), $25k personal property (part C), $500k liability (part E), and $50k loss assessment for about $400/year, with a $500 deductible. Does this seem reasonable?

Question 2: Is earthquake insurance prudent?

Our cooperative's master plan does not cover earthquake damage. This seemed crazy but apparently it's quite common. I am considering purchasing earthquake coverage for my internals/loss assessment through CEA that, in the event of an earthquake, would cover $100k building (part A), $25k personal property (part C), and $100k loss assessment (part E) for about $2,400/year, with 15% deductibles.

Does this seem prudent? It's very expensive, and might not cover enough of the cost to avert the financial disaster for us.

I've asked some friends and done some reading around, and it seems that very few people in California purchase earthquake insurance because of the cost. My friends said, with such low equity in the home, we would be better off walking away from the mortgage and filing for bankruptcy, but that seemed counter-intuitive.

    Reddit, I need insurance help!

    Posted: 30 Sep 2019 06:39 PM PDT

Hey Reddit, I'm interested in being a claims adjuster, particularly property claims. I have an Associates Degree in Criminal Justice, and a diverse work history. I've been a 911 dispatcher, retail customer service manager, and fast food shift manager. Basically, how can I make my resume and image appear better to potential employers? I'm in Ohio, and its my understanding adjusters don't need to be licensed. However, i'm thinking of getting licensed, and taking an XACTIMATE training class to get an upper hand. Is there any reason to do this? Thanks folks.

    Insurance wasn’t effective before crash

    Posted: 30 Sep 2019 05:38 PM PDT

I got insurance with GIECO two hours before the wreck and no this wasn't premeditated. I just got a car from the auction market and the brakes were defective apparently. On trying to cancel my policy about five weeks after, the agent discovered that my policy didn't start until the next day after the whole incident, which no one noticed, including myself. Now my fear is that the other party's insurance would come after me because at this point GIECO would almost certainly deny the claim. I don't have a problem with the other party's insurance coming after me because the damage was minor just a dent on her door, but then two weeks after the incident, I get a call claiming she's claiming personal injury which was absurd to me but I guess it's the system and everyone's trying to make money. At this point I could probably cover the cost of the damage to her car, but whatever she's claiming for injuries is probably just gonna wreck me financially if they come after me. I don't know how the system works as I just moved here not too long ago and that was my first car. Is there a way to fight this out with my insurance?

    Thank you in advance.

Texas, home insurance claim for water damage

    Posted: 30 Sep 2019 05:31 PM PDT

Busted pipe in my kitchen flooded our crawl space and has caused warping in our floor boards. The adjuster has come out and seen the before/after pictures of the pipe and also assessed damage. Hes pretty certain everything will be take. Care of policy wise. The restoration company came out today and said theyve got to move my family out for around 3 months to dry and replace everything.

My policy is pretty straight forward, I'm covered for up to 64k for moving and added living expense but I'm confused on how this works. Now that the restoration company has given me a time frame, will the insurance company send money to the mortgage company for the place we have to move? How do they determine payout if we rent a new place for 3 months?

Is this going to be separate from the money we use for fixing the house? How does the money work for the actual restoration work?

Should I be worried about out of pocket expenses?

Got snail mail today, To let me know that my Auto Insurance policy was dropped 4 months ago. What Recourse do I have?

    Posted: 30 Sep 2019 05:10 PM PDT

So. Title. Be aware I'm relatively new to dealing with insurance.

I opened my mailbox this morning to find mail directed at me from my auto insurance.. In the letter it explained that a Transaction to start my insurance that I requested in May did not go though, and I did not have a policy. I was surprised to find out that I've been uninsured for the last four months. After checking my Email, and my phone, I have received no other notification on this other than this mail. I spoke with my insurance company, and after extensive debate and haggling, got reinstated with a new policy, However, the premiums were raised by 100 dollars after scrounging up as many discounts as possible, Due to the fact that "I did not have prior insurance." (I managed to haggle it down from double the price from before.)

1.) Unlikely, but Recourse do I have? I understand that Its ultimately my responsibility to make sure things run smoothly as possible, But the fact that I Received no phone calls, and no emails, regarding the subject, and Only a letter four months after the policy cancellation rubs me the wrong way. The last communication I had with them was them stating that "Autopay was successfully setup."

2.) Can, and how long, Does it take to heal this damage? Is there a way to Expedite that process? As far as I'm concerned, I was made aware of the issue this morning, and I fixed it the same day, by Noon. I performed my due diligence As a citizen. How Long is this going to reflect on my record, And, if possible, is there a way for me to repair the damage and Lower my Premiums?

Very odd issue with a doctors office refusing to accept my medical insurance

    Posted: 30 Sep 2019 08:54 AM PDT

I have Premera Blue Cross/Blue Shield through my employer, Amazon. Two weeks ago I went to a specialist and was referred to another specialist. The second specialist never called to schedule an appointment, so I called them. After going through the whole name/address/etc they asked for my insurance, which I provided to them. I was placed on hold for around 2 minutes while they verified the coverage. Well when they come back to the line I am informed that they did not accept my insurance. I countered this by stating I was looking online at the insurance website and this doctor was listed as a preferred provider in network. I was told that they did not know why that was, but they did not accept it.

So after hanging up with them, I call Premera and explain the whole situation to the agent. She double checked in a few different spots, and said that they indeed are still listed as a provider so let me call them and see if they made an error. So after being on hold for 10 minutes or so, she comes back and says that she spoke with the office and it was specified to her that whereas they do accept Premera, they do not accept Premera through Amazon! She was very surprised that they said that and stated to me that she had never heard of such a thing before, and had even spoke with Florida Blue (the underwriters) and they said the same thing. Now they are going to submit a formal complaint on my behalf and investigate this, but in the interim I had to find a different specialist. Now my question is can a doctor's office refuse to accept the insurance because of who the employer is? I really hope that they can not do this!

Worried about losing health coverage. NJ

    Posted: 30 Sep 2019 04:24 PM PDT

I'm currently on Medicaid (njfamilycare) and was sent a renewal application at the start of September. The application letter said if I don't submit the necessary papers by September 30, my coverage will be terminated. I sent in the forms the next day and received a letter from the Medicaid office saying they received my forms and are reviewing my application.

Tonight, just now, I called the Medicaid office number and went through the automated process. The system provided me with no new info about my application status. Since tomorrow is the start of October, I'm not sure whether or not I'll have coverage after today.

Is it possible Medicaid will drop me following their review process meaning from October 1- final decision date I would not have coverage? Or will they give me until the end of October, or the month they make their decision, before my coverage is terminated?

Got rear ended. Go through my insurance or deal with them directly?

    Posted: 30 Sep 2019 03:48 PM PDT

    Hi all.

I got rear ended recently. Nothing bad but there is damage.

I obtained the insurance info from the other party but I've yet to call. One of the reasons I delayed is because I was curious to know if MY insurance would go up. I had an accident about a little over 3 years ago and my insurance recently went back down. If I go through my insurance, my rate shouldn't go up, right?

Also, what would be best: going through my insurance or dealing directly with the other person's insurance?

    I'm in California.

    Thanks!

Requesting documents from an old auto insurance claim - how long do insurers keep the records on file?

    Posted: 30 Sep 2019 11:27 AM PDT

I know this is a long shot - but I have the claim number, date of loss, the insured name, adjusters name, etc. DOL was in 2000, most of the paperwork is from 2002-2004 and the insured was represented by State Farm. There was a settlement and at least 1 car was totaled.

I was a minor at the time of the accident and I'm looking for more information (for personal reasons, nothing more). I thought I might be able to request documents from State Farm, but I don't know how long they keep this sort of stuff on file. Are records destroyed after a certain amount of time?

Multiple parked cars hit by drunk driver

    Posted: 30 Sep 2019 06:15 AM PDT

Last night around midnight drunk driver scraped two cars, overturned another one before hitting my car in front of my house and moving it from the spot about 10-15 feet forward. Towing company called by the police took all the cars.

The driver was arrested. Police said a report will be available in 5 business days.

I have collision insurance and underinsured insurance. However, my deductible is 750$.

Please tell me what are the steps to take, I have geico.

I haven't called them yet. Hell, I couldn't sleep all night after being awoken to the sound of metal banging against each other.

The car is a 11 year old VW beetle. The rear bumper is damaged pretty heavily, the car had a tire pressure warning after being hit. My concern is that there could be mechanical/transmission issues with the car since it was in park mode and it got dragged forward 10-15 feet (tire marks of my car are on the ground).

Also, if they deem the car a total loss according to KBB the value of the car is 1800-2000$. However, on carguru, cars.com etc, similar models are being sold for 6000$ - granted only few really are available in the 100 miles radius.

    I'm in NJ.

I dropped rental insurance couple months ago. However, I've read that in NJ you can claim loss of use, is this correct ,does it apply to my situation?

    Short version:

Car got rear-ended, driver arrested, no police report right now but will be ready in few days. Car is towed. Deductible 750$, do i pursue with the drivers insurance or go through my own insurance and let them handle it ? First time doing this.
