Anyone a Forensic Accountant out there?

    Posted: 20 Oct 2019 08:36 PM PDT

Hi, I'm a freshman accounting major and although I'm convinced that I want to get into forensic accounting, I realized that I don't know too entirely much about it. What experience is needed to become a forensic accountant? And how hard is it to become a forensic accountant (Is the demand high for forensic accountants?). Also, would you consider yourself happy with what you do? And lastly, how do salaries of forensic accountants compare with public accountants? Thanks for any input!

Big 4 Senior - Career Question

    Posted: 20 Oct 2019 08:20 PM PDT

Hello Everyone. I am torn on what to do with the rest of my career and have a question for anyone that would like to give input. I've been coming to this sub for years and have found some great career advice on it, but made a throwaway to ask this question for myself.

I am going to be moving back to the city I grew up in to be closer to my family and have decided this is a perfect time to leave public. I'm a newly promoted B4 tax senior and I feel like I have 2 options. I really wanted to become a controller or CFO of a small/medium sized company one day and have felt that in tax I am being pigeon holed to tax roles. So I basically feel like I have to either take a tax role in industry as a senior or start over as a staff in a general accounting role. Most of the recruiters I've talked to have said the openings for senior accountant roles want auditors not tax people. The thing is I don't know if I actually hate tax or if I only hate it because I've only done it in a B4 environment where the busy seasons absolutely suck. I'm tired of putting my life on hold every spring and fall.

So some of my questions are:

Do industry tax positions have a busy season similar to tax positions in public or are the hours normal year-around?

Are my career options limited later down the road if I stay in tax as I transition to industry?

If I didn't pursue a senior tax role and looked for general staff accountant roles in industry am I being stupid and making my 2 years of B4 become a waste? I always read on here to never take a pay cut after leaving public and am worried I would possibly have to if I looked for staff accountant roles. If I will have more options later down the road going this route I wouldn't be as upset about the pay for now.

Appreciate any input you all have.

TLDR: B4 newly promoted tax senior ready to leave for industry deciding whether to stay in tax or move to general accounting. Looking for advice.

My offices tax department has been severely understaffed for 2 years, classy way to ask for a raise?

    Posted: 20 Oct 2019 06:33 AM PDT

3rd year tax senior and let's just say my firm has had an ad out for tax seniors for for almost two years now (we are looking for at least 4). Long story short, culture was/is pretty bad and the staff said fuck this and left, leaving not enough in the pipeline to become a senior. Best case is we are another year out from growing current staff to being able to become seniors, that's how depleted we are.

While I had my annual review and raise over the summer, I've been thinking. This past busy season sucked and this one, there will he even less experienced people.

Is there any classy way to address, Im sick of being overworked for my current pay and it's only going to get worse?

Before everyone says leave, I will if it comes to it, but the perk is, I live 30 seconds from the office.

    How to dress Neat Casual?

    Posted: 20 Oct 2019 06:29 PM PDT

A few weeks ago, I went to a Big4 pre-interview dinner social. The dress code for that was neat casual and right next to the neat casual part, it said jeans were appropriate. I went there wearing a button up, chinos and a pair of the black white classic vans. I was the only one wearing something like vans and everyone else there was wearing more like business casual with a few people even wearing business formal. I ended up getting the internship and I'm going to a event for people who got the offer and I don't want to be underdressed this time since the dress code is neat casual again. I've been planning on buying shoes that could fit these kind of events as I don't have any so I wanted to ask if you guys had any advice as well as advice on how to dress "Neat Casual". These kind of events are a first for me so I don't know how I'm supposed to do things but the one thing I know I shouldn't do is wear my vans there...

There's not as many opportunities in Los Angeles as I imagined (Very overrated city)

    Posted: 20 Oct 2019 01:15 PM PDT

The entire county only has like 15 publicly traded company HQs, not to mention Oaktree being bought by a Canadian company this year. If you're looking for a major city without the shitty weather of Chicago or Boston, and without the outrageous COL and poop treasures of the Bay area, then I guess it's a good fit. But man...did I have higher expectations.

Do you really need to go to a top accounting college to land a really solid job?

    Posted: 20 Oct 2019 04:53 PM PDT

Does it your college really matter for accounting? Will the grind be a lot harder if I don't make it into a top accounting college? Just wondering because college apps are coming up and I'd like to become an accountant or work in finance.

Where can I go to get BDO merch?

    Posted: 20 Oct 2019 07:26 PM PDT

I just accepted a summer internship with BDO. I'm really excited and want to buy some merch. When I look for anything BDO related I get Black Desert Online stuff. Anyone know where to get BDO merch and what they give their summer interns when they start?

How do you deal with stress?

    Posted: 20 Oct 2019 05:09 AM PDT

I feel like I have noone to turn to because noone can understand me as fellow accountants so I turn to you for advice.

I work in public with multiple clients. I have a packed schedule with some tight deadlines. Some weeks are easier some are harder but I always managed to deliver on time. The difficult weeks put me under immense amount of stress and while I can get through these weeks okay I have some serious issues on Saturdays.

I wake up with a crazy headache I feel weak as hell, almost passed out yesterday, I'm pale as the wall and often vomit so I dont eat all day and I can barely, leave the bed. This goes on for a whole day gets better at night and no symptopms on Sunday. This always happens after difficult weeks so I think this is my body's reaction to stress.

This goes on since a few months and I'm running out of willpower and I have no idea what to do and I'm pretty scared of the busy season.

I feel like I could either quit my job now but it's only a temporary solution or learn to somehow deal with stress in other way. I take multivitamin and magnesium supplements but they dont seem to help.

Should I maybe ask my manager about my situation? I have no idea what to do.

do you have to do work outside of work interning/working with the big 4

    Posted: 20 Oct 2019 03:59 PM PDT

i'm planning on interning with EY risk advisory this summer, i guess this is just a general question of how your work/life balance is after college. like when you clock out after 5pm or 6pm are there usually things you still have to get done that you work on at home? or does your work usually stay at work?

Did any of you have a learning disability in undergrad? My heart is in accounting but my brain is struggling to keep up.

    Posted: 20 Oct 2019 01:26 PM PDT

Right now I'm re-taking Intermediate II and failed the mid term for the second time.

Corp Tax completely overwhelmed me and I gave up and walked out of the lecture. I had a breakdown and don't know what to do.

Do I even have a chance at a career in accounting if I'm struggling so bad right now? It's my dream to work in financial accounting or corp tax. But I can't seem to get past my learning disability limitations.

btw, my diagnosis was "slower than average processing speed. "

And feel free to be brutally honest. I gotta know the truth and reality.

background: I barely passed individual tax and successfully did VITA. All I need is Intermediate II, Corp Tax, and Audit to graduate. It's a state school and a 10 week quarter system. I have been granted ADA accommodations of 1.5x test time. I get up at 4:30am to be in the library at 6am and study most of the day. I also study all day Fridays and about 8 hours Sat and Sun. Sat and Sun I have basically no energy left and just vegetate the rest of the hours. I have given up all extra curricular activities, hobbies, pursuits, distractions and am committed to the endeavor. I don't drink, smoke or any non-sense/shenanigans. No significant other in my life at this time. I get about 6 hours of sleep a night and eat ok.

Please, any words from someone in accounting who has or knows of someone in accounting that has a learning disorder. Thank you with kind regards and respect.

    Salaries for Senior Accountants

    Posted: 20 Oct 2019 01:40 PM PDT

Just curious what are Senior Accountants (Public) at different sized firms are generally making? I am at a smaller firm in a major metropolitan area who specializes in a niche industry, making $65k. I have the CPA with three and a half years in public and two in private. I realize this is a sensitive topic and that salaries will vary by region, I am just a little curious. Feel free to laugh at my salary or commend me on snatching a good salary.

What are some good jobs I can do as a student to build my conversational and social skills to get into public accounting?

    Posted: 20 Oct 2019 08:02 PM PDT

Right now I am looking for any good avenue to build up my conversational skills to match some of the upper echelons of undergraduate students seeking public accounting internships.

My academics aren't that great, but right now I have accounting-related experience that I hope I can capitalize on.

I just need to be personable and be able to be social. How do I improve those skills?

    KPMG internship recruiting timeline?

    Posted: 20 Oct 2019 11:15 PM PDT

Any former KPMG interns out there?

How long did it take for you to hear back and was there another round of interviews that you had to do or did they just notify you for an offer? Does attending the post interview event affect your chances at an offer?

So far i've only done a double interview on campus

Audit Private Client. Requirement for A Walk-Through Every Three Years?

    Posted: 20 Oct 2019 07:21 PM PDT

I was looking for some clarification because I couldn't get any from my manager or partner. I couldn't find anything in the standards that require doing a full walk-through every 3 years, but my manager and partner insist.

It's an audit of a private client and we are NOT relying on controls. Supposedly, there is some kind of requirement that says we have to meet some requirement every 3 years and a walk-through is the easiest way to accomplish the requirement. Does anyone know the standard to which they are referring?

What are some activities (besides golf) that are popular talking points with recruiters?

    Posted: 20 Oct 2019 06:40 PM PDT

I'm really not that into golf but I can't think of any other activities that most B4 talk about. I go to a university that's very big on football so I'm trying to get myself interested since lots of recruiters coming over talk about their experiences with tailgating and gamedays when they were in undergrad.

I tend to prefer recruitment socials where it's just semi-casual and we're at a restaurant where we're just eating and talking, but I know there are socials with sports involved and I'm a little afraid of them because I don't want to make a fool of myself.

No accounting work experience and a 3.00 GPA. Where do I stand?

    Posted: 20 Oct 2019 06:32 PM PDT

I transferred in from community college and I am in my first semester of university. I have no accounting work experience and have a 3.00 because I took an Acct course in the summer. I am really interested in gaining some internship experience and am building my resume as much as possible. I am involved in an organization and leadership programs and am taking on leadership roles in the meantime. I really want to land an internship during recruitment In the spring but I feel like I won't even be considered because I don't have work experience. I know that I would put 110% into whatever job I am given ... where would I stand if I applied for an internship?
