    Hey /r/StockMarket!

Last week, we had a great turnout in the /r/StockMarket Discord Chat for our first weekly live chat! We did a quick recap of market action for the week, talked about a couple technical analysis patterns, answered a lot of questions about trading/investing strategy and finally discussed how to read and analyze form 4 SEC filings.

This week, after our normal discussion of market action for the week and looking at some plays for the week going forward, our official topic of conversation will be:

How to analyze ALL THE DATA to improve your trading/investing performance

This is an awesome opportunity to stop by the discord, ask live questions and get instant answers, and learn some great tidbits from experienced traders and investors about how they make money in the market.

I'll be live streaming my desktop and answering questions live via voice chat and this chat is open to all!

    Here is the connection information:

    Hope to see everyone there!

Some more interesting stories in the stock market this week

    Posted: 29 Sep 2019 05:29 AM PDT

    Value Stocks

J.P. Morgan upgraded Whirlpool to "Overweight" on Thursday and said it has an "inexpensive" valuation that offers investors a buying opportunity. Some would say that JPM has come a little late to the party with Whirlpool up 33% YTD. Rick Smith at fool.com published a particularly damning critique of JPM's research highlighting the poor quality of Whirlpool's recent earnings which was driven by (temporarily) cheap steel and generated little actual cash flow. He pointed to the forecast drop in earnings next year with anaemic growth of 5% expected thereafter and reminded investors of problems in the Latam and EMEA businesses. All considered, whirlpool looks cheap for a number of important reasons.

    Large Caps

Nike is a growth machine. Q1 earnings on Tuesday saw revenues increase 7% and earnings jump 29%. Trade concerns had little impact with Chinese sales up 22% and strong guidance was provided for the full year.

The stock price rose 5% after the statement, hitting new highs and a PE ratio of around 35, that looks reasonable given the number of opportunities available to the company. Nike has been successfully targeting trends in healthier living, athleisure, yoga pants, female customers in general and growing demand from Asia while increasingly moving to online channels and direct to customer sales. Nike is now heading into the peak holiday shopping season with strong tail winds. Long may it continue.

    Speculative Opportunity

Jabil has risen 13% since reporting strong Q4 earnings on Tuesday with a bullish outlook and a large stock buyback in the pipeline. But it is still trading on a reasonable multiple of just over 10x current year estimates.

The Q4 results saw revenues rise 14%, EPS was up 26% and operating income increased 23%.

A great quarter for the company that provides electronic circuit design services as well as manufacturing services to a wide range of industries sectors including auto, defense, digital home, aerospace, energy and healthcare.

Admittedly there are a number of cyclical sectors in there and the company does have an outsized exposure to Apple (around a quarter of revenues) that would be off putting for many investors. However, strong tailwinds have been driving sales and the company has executed well on diversifying it business.

CEO Mark Mondello expects key areas such as 5G roll out, cloud computing, energy and healthcare all to continue driving growth. He also highlighted a transformational strategic partnership with Johnson & Johnson that should increase revenues by (c.5%) $1 billion per year.

Those should all help results in the coming quarters and, worst case scenario, make earnings more resilient if the economy slows.

    Growth Stocks

Match was tumbling this week after it was reported that the dating services company was being sued by the FTC for allegedly using fake profiles to draw in subscribers. That's a potentially hugely damaging accusation for the company that is trying to rapidly monetize its apps as it approaches a more mature stage of its growth cycle. The stock price has increased six fold in the past 5 years and its PE multiple expanded to over 40x. However that seems to have happened just as growth is slowing and this latest revelation might be enough to burst the bubble.

    Insider Buying

Provention Bio CEO Ashleigh Palmer made a small purchase on Tuesday as the company made a public offering of $40 million. I would not read too much into that by itself but it comes after the company initiated a phase 3 clinical study evaluating PRV-031 in treating patients with recent-onset type 1 diabetes in April and then announced in June that a 14-day course of its immunotherapy PRV-031 delays the onset of type 1 diabetes in high-risk individuals by at least two years.

The stock is up nearly 100% since then yet its market cap of about $320 million still looks like it is underselling the opportunity to enter a multibillion-dollar market expected to grow to $25 billion by 2024. Insiders at the company seem to think so. There have been multiple purchases going back to July last year. 29 purchases to 1 sell as far as I can see.

    Pharmaceuticals

Avadel jumped 27% after reporting on Monday that narcolepsy drug, FT218, has been granted orphan drug designation by the FDA, meaning its path to approval has been accelerated.

The company said it now expects full enrollment for the trial of once-nightly sodium oxybate FT218 to be completed by year-end.

It's now beginning to look like FT218 could have the potential to serve as a genuine competitor for Jazz Pharmaceuticals' blockbuster Xyrem. Xyrem is the only product approved by the FDA, for both cataplexy and excessive daytime sleepiness in narcolepsy in adult and pediatric patients ages 7 and older.

If Avadel could win FDA approval then it would be able to win a sizeable share of the narcolepsy therapeutics market which is expected to reach $3.85 billion by 2025. Even after the jump Avadel's market capitalisation at Monday's close was just $167 million.

Please feel free to "FOLLOW" me if you would like to see my regular updates during the week.

This is not a recommendation to buy or sell. Stocks are not suitable for everybody. Please do your own research. Please note that a number of the above stocks are speculative high risk companies.

Are investing in ETF’s a safe ”bet”?

    Posted: 29 Sep 2019 05:15 AM PDT

    Hey guys,

I am just getting into the stock market in my early 20's, and my primary goal is to use it as a tool for retirement. If I were to invest in ETF's every month for the next ~35 years until retirement, it seems like this would be a very low risk option compared to an active investing strategy that includes buying individual stocks. I'm seeing that a lot of popular ETF's have a 40-50% return every 5 years, which seems good to me.

    Thoughts??

New to trading, what should I do/learn before getting started?

    Posted: 29 Sep 2019 11:39 AM PDT

I'm interested in getting into trading stocks. I've been bounced around and shit on by all the online gurus selling courses for e-commerce, affiliate marketing, etc. Even paid a total of $4500 for a 6 month, once a week for 1 hour mentor just to find out that the business model has an incredible amount of issues with it that made it near impossible to run and that this mentor didn't know what he was talking about at all. Anyway, does anyone have some tips of what I should learn about before getting started? I have $1000 in an account with TD Ameritrade right now and will have more money to put In as I get more comfortable with what I'm doing. I also have a membership with Vector Vest. I'm more interested in the idea of swing trading rather than long term trading for right now. Any tips for that?

ADR vs buying stock in foreign markets w local currency?

    Posted: 29 Sep 2019 09:06 AM PDT

Arbitrageurs and long term investors- I've been working on expanding my overseas positions for long term holding of solid blue chips which often include a dividend. Have you found any patterns, shorthands or tools to help you quickly decide between US traded ADR and buying a stock in the stock's home market?

What considerations inform your approach? What would you recommend for my situation(very long term, often with dividends).

What are people’s thoughts on SSI? (Stage Stores)

    Posted: 28 Sep 2019 09:51 PM PDT

It's going through a rebranding. Has dumped a lot of unreliable assets and names to focus on the "99 cent store" style markets in middle America.

The stock is up from an all time low. 2 bucks at the moment, was around .65 last week. At it's height it's been close to 40 bucks.

This is obviously not an amazon competitor or internet market comp. However it owns and operates Goody's, Peebles and Goodmans and more.

    Do we think a pump?

It being a low stock, I feel like it could have an influence on the Robin Hood crowd.

Also with JC Penney making a rebound, this could have a bit of a ride and move.

    Thoughts?

I'll be x-posting this is robinhoodstocks
