Posted: 29 Sep 2019 04:27 PM PDT Raccoons have been climbing up my chimney and ripping holes in my roof to get into my attic. I've trapped and killed 4 in the last month. I've patched multiple holes, but I believe the smell of urine and feces on the roof is still drawing them in (the roof has been hosed off MULTIPLE times, and had heavy rains). The last time, I was not able to patch the hole before a heavy storm, and I now have water damage inside the house. Called insurance, agent says it's not covered. I read my policy, I believe it is, and that the roof should be replace under insurance. Relevant text from policy (Section B): The following exclusions apply to coverage A - Dwelling and Ceverage B - Other Structures: We do not insure for loss consisting of, or caused directly or indirectly by any of the following: (article 5): Insects, Arachnids, Bats, Birds, Rabbits, Rodents, Domestic Or Farm Animals. This also includes any costs to test for, clean up, or remediate any excretion, secretion, or decomposition of any of these animals. This exclusion does not apply to breakage of glass that is part of this building. When doing research, I find this: Raccoons are members of the Procyonid family, which also includes ringtail cats, coatis of South America, and kinkajous of Central and South America. Taxonomists once placed the animal in the same genus as bears (Ursus), but later gave raccoons their own genus (Procyon). My insurance agent claims that since they are rodents, they are not covered. According to the scientific definition though, and the fact that Procyonids or Raccoons are not mentioned ANYWHERE in my policy, I feel like I'm getting shafted here. Am I wrong? Has anyone had any luck getting Raccoon damage covered? How do I go about addressing this with my agent? EDIT: Also, as I'm reading further, this directly follows Section B: Any loss from the Exclusions listed above is excluded regardless of any other covered or non-covered cause or event contributing in any sequence to or concurrently with the loss. These Exclusions apply: - even if the loss event results in widespread damage; - whether the loss is caused by natural, man-made, or animal forces; - regardless of whether any cause of loss described in any of these Exclusions is hidden from view or not; or - whether the loss occurs as the result of one or any combination of any of these Exclusions. However, we do cover any ensuing loss covered by this policy. I'm not sure how that second bullet point relates. Would that mean that even if it isn't listed specifically in section B article 5, that it still wouldn't be covered, because it is "caused by natural, man-made, or animal forces"? [link] [comments] |
Question about long term care insurance BIO Posted: 30 Sep 2019 04:59 AM PDT My mother has been paying into a long term care policy for about 15 years. She is now approaching the age where she might need to utilize some of its benefits at some point. They are offering a BIO (benefit increase option). However, while the individual coverage limits (daily maximums, etc) are increasing by 16%, the monthly premium is increasing by a whopping 60%, which sounds terrible to me. Is this a good deal? I can't get my head around the math, but I thought there must be something I'm missing. Thanks. [link] [comments] |
Cant get in contact with claim agent to find neccessary detail. Posted: 30 Sep 2019 01:21 AM PDT I will keep it short. The claim agent deny my sister claim because according to him she is not cover from the begining of august to end of august. The agent said she did not sign some form to finalize her paperwork, said he had mail out the form. We try to get in contact with him to get a copy of the form but he been ignoring ours call and text. The last time he contact was a text with a pic of the date the form was sent which was begining of august. I still dont know what that form is and we cant contact him. What are my option? Got a failure to yield ticket in NJ with NY license, will this get reported to my insurance? Posted: 29 Sep 2019 10:42 AM PDT Since I'm out of state, it appears there will be no points on my license but curious if a violation like this will get reported to my insurance (Liberty Mutual). If so how much extra could I expect to pay. The fine itself is $85 which I'm fine with paying. It would be more money and time wasted going back to NJ to fight it. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Sep 2019 08:29 PM PDT I am moving from one state to another (FL to NC) but planned a week off and a 2 week road trip during my move. I moved out of my apartment last week, got my deposit back and intended to use it as a downpayment to purchase a car to drive during my road trip. My next apartment in NC will not be ready for move in until Nov 1st. I went to a dealership to purchase the car and I need proof of insurance to drive it off the lot. They said insure the car in the state it will reside/be parked. I tried to get car insurance for NC as that is where the car will be parked (and hopefully registered). The insurance company said I need to have proof of residence for NC which I do not have because I am not there yet. I no longer have an address in Florida either as I have moved out of my apartment. How do I get insurance? If I use my previous address will I have to pay FL taxes for the car and pay taxes again in NC when I register it there? [link] [comments] |
What coverage for bodily injury liability should I buy? Posted: 29 Sep 2019 07:39 PM PDT Hi everyone, I just bought a car so I'm buying insurance for the first time (I used to be on my parents policy with their car). I'm not sure how much coverage to get for bodily injury liability and I was hoping some insurance savy people can give me some advice. If I understand correctly, the amount of coverage I should get depends on my situation (financial etc.) So here are some things about me.
I am currently covered for 100k/200k. What's the right way to think about this kind of coverage? Am I over covered (is there such thing?) or under covered? Does anyone have any advice? [link] [comments] |
Car damaged while out of state on business. I need to travel again soon. Posted: 29 Sep 2019 06:56 PM PDT I am on a business trip almost 1000 miles from home. Someone backed into me while I was stationary and pushed my fender into the wheel. She claimed it was my fault and I was speeding down the road. I have a dashcam proving otherwise. Police were called and the report + footage was uploaded to my insurance (Geico). My car was towed to a body shop. I filed through my insurance because I heard that was faster than going through theirs. An insurance adjuster made an inspection the next day. I see a check was sent on the 19th. The shop is saying they still have not received approval to repair, and seem to not care at all now that my car is with them. I need to get to a memorial service and then home by the 7th. What options do I have for travel and getting my car repaired? This is my first claim experience so I probably made a poor assumption that my car would be repaired in three weeks, but here I am :/ [link] [comments] |
Do I need contents insurance or gadget insurance? Posted: 29 Sep 2019 06:39 AM PDT I've just moved back to a Student area in England to finish my final year of University. I want my gadgets (TV, Xbox, Laptop) covered for theft and accidental damage. I'm unsure which type of insurance to get, any advice would be appreciated! :) [link] [comments] |
New to figuring out how insurance works price wise when looking for a new car Posted: 29 Sep 2019 04:32 PM PDT So I'm 20 years old, I've been driving my moms older car for the past 2 years since I got my license, now I'm not on their policy but the car I drive is, so i feel like an idiot for not getting on the policy as soon as I got my license. Everywhere I check it seems like I'm gonna be paying a ton for insurance which I get, but is there a chance It'll get slightly better after the initial first 6 months? Because paying 4000 a year for insurance on a civic or something basic doesn't sound super appealing but I'm worried it's just a reality I have to deal with until I'm 25. My parents have Texas farm bureau so I'm thinking of going with them. [link] [comments] |
2009 328i total loss vehicle but clean title. Posted: 29 Sep 2019 03:53 PM PDT I'm in VA. Bought a 328i stupidly last week. I only found out that it was total loss after buying it for 6500. It has 83k miles on it, and I believe it's very solid mechanically in terms of frame, engine, and transmission. I felt so stupid when I returned home with it and inspected it properly. I wish I did the Carfax before buying it. So on the Carfax, it states on 5-30-2019 that it was deemed total loss, but the title is still clean. The title was from July, so it was clean after the accident. Apparently the car has been through 3 accidents in its life time and had 3 owners (3rd being me) One accident on rear (reported as very minor) one accident on left (again very minor) and the last accident was the one which totalled it which was on the doors. I checked under the doors and it seems they are definitely repainted or replaced, but the shop appeared to have done a decent job because it is very hard to notice. The red flag for me noticing the right door replacement was the mirror. The driver mirror is 2009 BMW and the passenger side mirror looks different and is from a 2006 BMW I think. I didnt know any of this, but the seller did give me a VIN and I guess it was my responsibility to check it. Still, it's a sad event but not something terrible. The car is almost new from inside and has nothing wrong in terms of driving it. The door replace is unnoticeable as well (besides mirror but I will be changing that) My real question here though is that how can this car be a clean titled car with a total loss on the Carfax? I insured it as well and haven't had any problems with it in terms of insurance and DMV process. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Sep 2019 03:53 PM PDT I'm 20 and have never had my own car or been on an insurance policy. I've driven my parents' cars occasionally but I'm not on their policy at all. Earlier this summer my grandparents allowed me long term use of their car. It's still under their name and insurance, but they graciously allowed me to drive their car all summer. My mom emailed her insurance company and asked if she'd have to add me to the policy if I was just occasionally using family cars over the summer and the agent told us not to bother. I'm abroad for the rest of the year, but I'm wondering how to handle this insurance situation when I get home. They will continue to let me use their car for the foreseeable future. Should I just go along and not be on any policy since the car is insured under my grandparents? What wouldn't be covered if something happened? Should I just bite the bullet and get on my mom's policy? BTW, everyone lives in California. Thanks for the feedback [link] [comments] |

Found an illegal plumbing issue from previous owners. Can I make a claim for this! Posted: 29 Sep 2019 01:40 PM PDT We had some septic issues that we noticed (or thought we noticed) from clogging in our sink. When we fixed the tank, we found out that the sink wasn't connected to the septic tank. Long story short, the previous owners installed an illegal grey water system from the kitchen sink which had eventually stopped functioning. We're in a bit of a pickle as we would have to go through our foundation to reach the septic tank and honestly have no way to fund it. Can I make a claim through my insurance policy since it was illegal and not found in the inspection? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Sep 2019 03:58 PM PDT Got the snapshot in two vehicles. A van and a Cavalier. Got an A+ rating on the van. Got a C- on the Cavalier. Same driver. The Cavalier's speedometer falls slowly when braking. All of my "hard brakes" beep only after I've come to a complete, gentle stop. I can watch the speedometer fall the last 6 mph after the soft stop. I called Progressive. The only option offered me was to return the device, exit the program, and watch my rate go up. A tremendous "screw you." I have seen other similar comments online. This issue causes people to avoid coming to a complete stop, doing a rolling stop at signs, rather than have to pay for a safe, legal stop. Snapshot is making drivers less safe. And Progressive doesn't care. [link] [comments] |

Questions regarding car insurance Posted: 29 Sep 2019 09:02 AM PDT I had to add my partner to my car insurance since he lives with me and it doesn't make sense to have separate insurance with my name on his. I just added him to mine. Regardless if either of us gets a ticket the premium will go up. If he gets a ticket will my insurance go up? If I get a ticket will his go up? I'm confused and not really sure how it works. Thanks [link] [comments] |
