    PSLF Success!

I finally did it! PSLF was approved four months after my last payment. Just a friendly reminder that it can take more than ten years to make 120 payments.

Student Loan Forgiveness: Can The US Erase Student Debt? [9:43] - CNBC/YouTube

    Posted: 06 Jun 2019 05:37 AM PDT

"The U.S. has roughly $1.57 trillion in student debt. Some Democrats want to create student loan forgiveness plans that make that, or at least a large portion of it, disappear. Canceling student debt has gained steam with 2020 candidates vying for the votes of young college-educated Americans. On April 23, Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass. was the first 2020 presidential candidate to unveil a plan to erase large portions of student debt. But what would it actually take to eliminate a big chunk of government-held student debt, and is it really a good idea?"

Using Federal Loans (lower interest rate) to pay off Sallie Mae (higher interest rate)

    Posted: 06 Jun 2019 05:37 PM PDT

Hello hello. I had a thought that came with a question and didn't really know exactly what to search to get the answer so I thought I'd rely on reddit.

First off, small background info: I just graduated from undergrad, and will be doing school for another 4 years for a professional school, so all my loan payments are still going to be deferred. Over the past 4 years, I've accrued various unsub and sub federal loans of roughly ~4.5% interest rates (varying) and a $12.7 k loan from Sallie Mae for 6.75% interest rate (now I owe about $13.5k just for sallie mae)

I can borrow about $70k per year for the next four years for school but I only need about $32k (which is unavoidable). Should I borrow an additional $13.5k from my federal loan, which technically will have a lower interest rate than Sallie Mae, to pay Sallie Mae's loan off and accrue interest at a lower rate? Or is there some stipulation that will make this idea stupid? I don't know enough about student loans and finances to know for sure. Thanks in advance.

Anyone know of Education Financial for Student Debt Consolidation?

    Posted: 06 Jun 2019 01:53 PM PDT

I got a phone call and voicemail about possible student loan "release/redemption". Idk why but I decided to give them a call back. I got to the point where he put an application through to the Dept. of Ed. and it came back that they could consolidate my federal loans and I'd save about $30k. While breaking it down he said that the first five months would be in a payment of $180 and then after that depending on income it would be anywhere from $0-$50 a month to pay it off over 10 years.

Does anyone know of this company, I searched google while on the phone and didn't find anything directly related to them just financial education services and I couldn't find anything on the Better Business Bureau site either. I wound up hanging up when they asked for the banking info, just didn't feel right i remember reading if you have to pay for the service its not legit and thats what the $180 for five months was.

TL;DR Is Education Financial a reputable site for student loan consolidation?

Form 8379 filed and waiting... any success stories out there???

    Posted: 06 Jun 2019 04:03 PM PDT

My husband and I filed our taxes jointly but our refund was withheld because of his loans. I filled out and submitted form 8379 about 8 weeks ago, called IRS to check on status today, and they said I will find out within a week if I get my share of the refund back....

My question for anyone who has dealt with this... have any of you successfully recieved their refund or should I not get my hopes up? Everything i've read tells me what to do but not how/if it worked out. Any info would be so helpful. Thanks!!

Make sure you double check your loans

    Posted: 06 Jun 2019 08:26 AM PDT

I paid off my loans last week, they date back 14+ years. I didn't go to college straight out of high school and attended 3 separate colleges. I went to the federal student loans site and looked at my loans and found $6,000 in loans for a school I never attended.

Has anyone ever dealt with this? I have spoken to the school, they cannot find any record of me. I have spoken to Great Lakes (Consolidation) and they gave me the form for False Certification.

Consolidating a Parent Plus Loan to a Direct Consolidation Loan. Will previous payments, before consolidation, count towards PSLF?

    Posted: 06 Jun 2019 07:16 PM PDT

So my mother has a parent plus loan that she took out for me when I went to school. I've been graduated for a while now (almost 7 years now). She works for the local government so I was wondering if she consolidates to a direct consolidation loan, will the previous payments before consolidation count towards the 120 payments required for PSLF? Or will she need to make 120 consecutive payments after she consolidates to be eligible for PSLF?

    Need help with navient.

    Posted: 06 Jun 2019 07:02 PM PDT

I have paid off my loans like clockwork every month since 6months after quitting school. Back in January I "missed" a payment. Which is off because it is setup up on autopay and my account always has plenty of money in it. Long story short my account is now in collections despite the autopay working every single month before and after just not January 2019. What can I do?

EDIT: The loan is not in collections but I have still been hit with a delinquent account mark on my credit.

    Is Student Loan Direct legit?

    Posted: 06 Jun 2019 05:42 PM PDT

I got a call from them recently and then a welcome email after I expressed some interest.

Are they a good service (also not a scam?), or should I just do this work on my own through studentloans.gov?

Or has anyone used the service themselves and can speak to it personally? Thanks in advance for the help.

can I refinance loans via multiple companies ?

    Posted: 06 Jun 2019 12:52 PM PDT

I'm sorry this has been asked before. I legitimately did a search and I couldn't find a thread for it.

    short background info-

MD just out of residency with a ton of loans (about 485K)

    - about 15K from navient

    - 360K from federal

    - 110K from private lender that I refinanced which is now a laurel road loan

    they are all around 5-8%

    my question is,

can I use 3 different companies to refinance my student loans and get a low rate on them (since each loan will be for less)

    as an example:

    150K with sofi

    150k with first republic

150K with laurel road (refinance again), or like with earnest , common bond, etc

I tried to refinance the 480K preliminarily with laurel road and I got a 4.08% fixed 10 year, but I would like to get down to like < 4%

    thanks

American living and working in Australia - filing taxes / loan deductions

    Posted: 06 Jun 2019 03:37 PM PDT

    Hey all,

I am currently living/working in Australia in education. I paid 3000 off my interest last year and was wondering how foreign income vs paying interest factors into deductions? Probably NIL, but figured it couldn't hurt to ask.

    Cheers.

Can I delay the start of my payments 1-month?

    Posted: 06 Jun 2019 06:56 AM PDT

Hi all - I graduated at the start of May, but because I was part-time since January my grace period ends in two weeks. I have a job lined up to start then, but my first paycheck won't be until two weeks after that. I would prefer to pay my first payment out of my next paycheck, is it possible to get a delay of just a single month?

    OSAP

    Posted: 06 Jun 2019 06:39 AM PDT

I'm not sure if this is the right spot for this, since this is my first time posting, but here we go.

I'm on academic probation, and in order to get OSAP funding for this coming school year, I have to write a letter explaining the circumstances that affected my academic performance, steps I will take to improve my academic progress, and my academic goals. I'm honestly so disappointed in myself for having to write this, however it was a crap year and I want to rectify it.

Does anyone have any advice on how to write a letter like this? Has anyone had to write one?

myFedLoan - Paid off loan, still listed in direct debit

    Posted: 06 Jun 2019 02:02 PM PDT

About a week ago I had an extra payment process that closed out one of my loans through myFedLoan. I went in to adjust my direct debit information and I noticed that it's still listed as taking out another payment for the closed out loan this month. Has anyone had experience with this or does anyone have any suggestions?

    Student Loan Tax Deductions

    Posted: 06 Jun 2019 06:13 AM PDT

My wife recently graduated and currently has around $40k in 3 student loans through Sallie Mae that we are going to begin paying off. Due to Sallie Mae having ridiculous interest rates (9-12%) we plan on refinancing with a company that offered us a variable rate of 5%. We have been very lucky in getting well paying jobs and plan to pay of the loan in under a year by paying way more than the minimum payment and paying around $3,000 a month. The Sallie Mae loans have already accrued over $6,000 in interest since she started school. I read online that interest paid on student loans is tax deductible up to $2500. My question is if we refinance with the new company combining all of her loans will the interest still be tax deductible or will it not be since technically it wouldnt be interest anymore and it would just be part of the principal on the new loan? Please feel free to offer any advice or correction into our situation, we both have never properly been taught anything about finance/loans and honestly feel lost.

    Student loan settlement?

    Posted: 06 Jun 2019 09:30 AM PDT

So I took out an 11k loan for a Masters degree about 6 years ago and went into default. Current balance with interest is now around 17K. I have the option of rehabilitating (paying around 18k in the end) or settling for 12k. I heard settling can negatively effect credit scores, but my credit score is already 567 so not great anyway. They also say I'll pay taxes on the money saved (the 4kish that I will save if I settle). Will taxes on that be negligible?

Feel like I should just settle the debt at once as opposed to paying the rehabilitation plan. Thinking I can improve my credit by getting a Capital Card. Long term goal is to get approved for a mortgage and to use said property as a rental.

I'm a US citizen but also currently living abroad in Hong Kong where I have excellent credit.

Am I stupid to not just go ahead and settle?
