    dealing with trolls/haters?? small business

    dealing with trolls/haters??

    Posted: 29 Jun 2019 06:47 PM PDT

I own an Etsy business where I repurpose new and old shirts and add cool designs to them. I have an instagram account for it as well. Recently I have been super successful and have been having a lot of sales.

The other day, I got a message from a fake instagram account saying that I'm a terrible person for "falsely advertising" my products (which is not true) and they hope to see my business shut down. They also sent me screenshots of them reporting my listings (which I'm not worried about because I'm not falsely advertising anything or breaking any Etsy rules) so my hunch is that another competitor is just trying to bring me down. I responded very politely saying thank you for your concern, I will look into it etc.

Has anyone dealt with anything like this, or have any advice? Thanks!

Have a website? You are losing money if you are not retargeting!

    Posted: 29 Jun 2019 11:41 AM PDT

In Facebook Advertising, retargeting is the practice of re-engaging people who have interacted with your website with relevant Facebook ads.

Using the Facebook Pixel, you can track visitors that are at different stages of your funnel and retarget them with relevant ads. For example, someone who added a product to his shopping cart is warmer than someone who simply visited your home page. The trick is to create custom ads for each stages of your funnel.

Here are different audiences and how to re-engage them.

    1. Looked at your home page - Create "social proof" ads. Share testimonials, customer reviews, case studies, etc. This will boost your credibility and might get them more interested in what you have to offer.
    2. Looked at a collection page - Retarget them with a carousel ad that will show them (directly on facebook) the contents of a collection they've already shown interest in, add customer reviews
    3. Viewed a product - Retarget them with an ad that will show a specific product's photos, customer reviews and maybe a discount.
    4. Added a product to cart - Create a dynamic ad that will automatically show them the content of their shopping cart right on facebook. Add a discount code to encourage them to complete their order. You can also add scarcity or time constraint elements. "Only 5 left in stock", "Offer ends in 3 days!".
    5. Placed an order - Show them an upsell offer, "frequently bought together" items, a prolonged-guarantee, added-value service, VIP discounts on a new product.
    6. Read your Sales Page - These people are most likely already bought into your offer, they just didn't take action yet. We can serve them a follow-up sales page, case study, article or discount.

For each of the audiences above, we can decide a specific time frame in which they took action. For example, we can show a different ad to someone who viewed a product in the last 3 days vs in the last 30 days.

To conclude, if you are driving traffic to your website but not retargeting, it's like you're filling a bucket with a hole at the bottom. The methods outlined above are geared towards ecommerce websites, but retargeting can (and should) be used with any business model; physical stores, online stores, local or online service providers, local or online coaches and consultants and more.

NJ Min Wage is Jumping - I want to get ahead of it

    Posted: 29 Jun 2019 08:12 AM PDT

My delivery guys make 10 an hour and work 55 hours a week. They get 15 hours overtime. Now NJ is upping min wage to 15 an hour by 2024 and that means it's going to hike up every year. I want to get ahead of this like I do everything at work.

So my guys work 440 hours a week typically. If I divide that into 40 hour shifts for full time, that leaves me needing 11 drivers. Is there an app or a way to figure this out on excel? I work from 8-6pm and 8-4pm on Saturday.

10 an hour is about 710 cost not including Workers Comp. So its maybe close to 800 a week per employee. So putting everyone on 40 hour shifts and getting 11 drivers means I would increase personell by 3 and my costs would go up by a few hundred a week.

That's if I shift everything immediately to 15 an hour. Ideally Id like to transition this slowly so I can reduce costs, I am a business owner afterall, while also keeping everyone happy. Another reason for the slow transition is that the guys who currently make 15-17 an hour, my top sales guys would get pissed that these guys are now making 15 an hour, even though they get no Overtime which is a big deal for them.

80/20 split but the other party wants to be paid a wage as well. Is this normal?

    Posted: 30 Jun 2019 02:34 AM PDT

So my wife (a personal trainer) and I are going through the process of investing in a gym, we will be fronting up the 50k cash to get the business going with the other party paying their part back as a loan. We have 4 pts ready to sign up for 200 a week rent so we will be covering all out goings as of week one.

Initially it was going to be a 50/50 split ownership between us and another Pt with good connections in the industry and very good knowledge of how to run the business.

We are now leaning towards more of a back seat approach with a 75/25 split (us the 25). Once the initial 50k is paid back by the other party it will become an 80/20 split. All of this sounds good to us and we were pretty comfortable with everything but now the other owner is suggesting he wants to be paid a wage for the hours he works their on top of his % of ownership.

Is this normal and we are just freaking out over nothing or is he trying to take us for a ride here?

Income tax lien on unit I purchased

    Posted: 29 Jun 2019 06:11 PM PDT

I am trying to buy a mall cell-phone kiosk store from a person. He told me last week the business has a lien by the irs. Income tax past due. He has 7 locations. I am just buying the store spot and customer base. Not his company name/entity . Will the Lien transfer over to me?

    Edit: apologies for the confusion

1)Yes, I am not buying the kiosk. There's no lease transfer I got a brand new lease.

    2) I am getting the right to operate the business under the parent cellphone company as a authorized retailer. We get a percent of the bill payments from the customer base. By getting this location I am getting this customer base and all its future residual.

    3) I like the location and want to keep it. However if I have to pay the lien on it, it would not be viable. I was made aware of the lien from the previous owner 2 days ago. He made it seem like if I kept the store I would have to pay the income tax he didn't pay which sounds strange. Which takes me back to my main question which is if I keep the store will the lien transfer to me?

Logo/Designs - worth paying for or hiring someone else?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2019 09:23 PM PDT

Hi guys, I'm creating a small business online but I'm having trouble deciding whether it's worth just paying someone to create cohesive branding for me or if I should learn how to do it myself. I don't feel like I have the patience or eye for creating anything good looking.

How do I start my clothing business?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2019 04:02 PM PDT

I consider myself something of an entrepreneur and I want to start a business along the lines of "streetwear" clothing but I don't know how to start. I don't know how exactly to muster up enough funds to be able to put a lot of $ into it and I don't know how to get into contact with the cheap wholesalers or companies that would be able to brand my clothing and produce it for a low cost. I may not even know what I'm talking about but I really am interested in starting this business and I would really appreciate people who could give me some honest insight and help on starting this up. Thanks!

How to submeter my mobie home and RV park

    Posted: 29 Jun 2019 07:39 PM PDT

TL;DR Need to install water submeters for a 60 space mobile home and RV park, ideally would like the electronic ones that remotely send the usage to your computer or something that is really easy to gather the usage, any info is greatly appreciated

    Hi all!

First time poster. I own a 60 space mobile home and RV park near Dallas Texas. It's been in my family for 3 generations and we have always covered the water bill. For the last 2 decades it's ran between $20 and $30 a unit, and over the last 2 years I've noticed a pretty sharp increase. The city came out and installed a smart meter and the price has now jumped from $50-$60 a unit to almost $100 a unit, they told me that from 11pm to 5 am (when everyone is asleep) we are using over 300 gallons an hour, so this means we have some pretty severe leaks going on, i've sent multiple letters over the years for people to fix their leaks, I hiked the rent last year and told people it was because of the water and that only made it worse, I swear some people are leaving their faucets on just to spite me. I can not do this anymore, I tried rolling out a program last year where you pay X amount (a fair bit over market) and it's all inclusive, trash, water, electric, sewage, etc. It was fine for the first few months, now I see people with their doors open half the day in the Texas heat, and you *know* the A/C is on. People wonder why landlords are such ruthless assholes sometimes and THIS IS WHY. Anyway, I need to install water submeters, ideally I would like to use those meters where they're electronic and they just send their information to my laptop but i've been searching the web and can't seem to get any straight answers on those. I would love for anyone who has any experience with this to please share and guide me in the right direction.

    Thanks a million!

Solo LLC vs Partnership LLC for brother as partner and paying worker's comp

    Posted: 29 Jun 2019 04:52 PM PDT

I want to form an LLC. Originally it was going to be a single-member/owned LLC of mine, where I would just pay my brother for helping me on jobs. However after talking to an insurance rep about the insurance for the LLC, they told me if I wanted to do this then I would need to provide worker's comp for my brother since we are in the state of NE. To make things more complicated, we want to be able to legally use our own money to pay for projects, meaning he would be contributing and we would need to track that and use it as write-off against profits, and it seems to get messy real fast.

I'd really like to know if I have any alternatives to save the money from an already tight budget the first five years.

The only solution I have found is to actually form a partnership LLC but thanks to Reddit I have realized that partnership LLC's are just a clusterfu**.

    MARYLAND Sole Proprietorship TAXES??

    Posted: 29 Jun 2019 04:31 PM PDT

Hoping someone can shed some light on the confusion of SP and collecting/filing for taxes.

I'm a part-time artist in the process of opening my own online shop. I don't expect to do much business for a while, since I will only be starting with one small product (and will need to wait until I get money coming in until I can have more products made for sale, so building my store up will be a slow process). I just filed for and was approved for Sole Proprietor status. Great! I'm on my way!

But upon looking into my tax questions, the only "answers" I'm finding online are just further confusing me, and making me less confident that I can understand all this legal mumbo-jumbo.

    My main questions:

-Do I NEED an EID for my type of side business? I also plan on filing a DBA, but is there anything else I should look into doing so I don't get in trouble legally?

-My biggest question, what do I need to charge my customers, tax-wise? Do I charge tax based on the state they live in, do I only tax those who also live in Maryland, or am I small enough that I don't need to charge sales tax?

-If anyone can brief me on the tax process for the first year, that would be awesome, 'cuz I have absolutely no idea what to expect.

-Any other helpful tips on the subject are wonderfully welcome.

I'm pretty poor and have a plethora of health problems, so it's not really realistic for me to hire a tax professional, so I'm trying to do what I can on my own.

I want to start bag buisness, need help!

    Posted: 29 Jun 2019 01:02 PM PDT

First of all, this post is copyed paste on some other Reddits, because I want to get as much information as possible. Then, if someone sees it multiple times, sorry for spoiling your wall.

Informations I am looking for are both form buisnes as well as design/production side.

Some time ago, I came up with idea of bag, which I want to first produce and then sell. I have general idea in my mind, but dont know how to start. I really would like to make a project of it, but I dont know how should it look like. I read about lot of materials and i want to make 2 variants, premium onematerial/lether and second material one simmilar to gym bag. My idea was to ask some type of tailor to sew a "prototype" of it, a bag itself is pretty complicated, so there comes the first question:

    1. What type of project does taylor expect from me?

Then, if everything is good and only minor correction are needed I would like to sew (not my self, somewhere) biger amout of them and try to begin selling them. Here comes second question: 2. How to start producing bigger amout of bags?

Third thing is much more unreal at this moment, but i dont know how to sell them. IMO best way would be via internet, but I know anything about selling anuthing and about advertisment. That closes up to last question:

    1. How to sell via internet?

Thank you guys for reading the whole post. I will appreciate any kind of help.

How can I fix my Adwords account?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2019 11:02 AM PDT

I have an AdWords account which I use for pressure washing. I have about 100 exact keywords and modified broad match keywords which are all similar to "pressure washing services" "pressure washing businesses near me" etc. I get about 70 impressions a day but only about 4 clicks a week. Resulting in about one call a week, which only scores me a real job about half the time. I have a few negative keywords but because my keywords I are pretty narrow I don't need many. A couple months ago I had mostly broad keywords such as "pressure washing" with a shitload of negative keywords. This worked in the beginning, However after a few months i was paying way too much per click, sometimes up to 17 dollars per click, which had originally been around 5 dollars. and %80 of my clicks did not result in a call. I do have a good landing page set up. I'm just wondering how I can broaden my keywords without paying out the ass for it. I've been messing around with AdWords for a while and have put around 2000 dollars into it. But still haven't been able to find any stability. I would like to hire a ppc professional, but right now it's just not in my budget.

How can I find advertisers for my printed coffee shop magazine.

    Posted: 29 Jun 2019 10:10 AM PDT

I have started a printed newsletter in magazine format thats found in coffee shops and waiting rooms in our small, mostly retired population, town.

We already have one newsletter, that is only black and white, is photocopied poorly on a4 paper and is currently impossible to get into advertising wise, because they are the cheapest in print newsletter in this town.

The printed aspect works really well for our little town, but while the other newsletter is flourishing, I can't find advertisers to start with. As it is, I am publishing the first issue with advertising spaces available to purchase, but not any actual, real advertising.

I'm fleshing out the articles to take up the space where advertising SHOULD be.

    Any ideas?

Thinking about building a business plan for a cat cafe

    Posted: 29 Jun 2019 06:57 AM PDT

One of my hugest joys in life is my four cats. I've heard about cat cafes before, but I've honestly never been to one. From a quick Google search, there are only 3 in the state I live, all are at least 3 hours away. I think it's a great business idea that I'd love to bring to my area. My question is, has anyone here started up any sort of pet business? I know there are restrictions due to health regulations for keeping food and cats separate, but what other types of standard regulations do I need to look out for? Are there regulations for working with local pet shelters to supply cats? Are there standard living dimension requirements for the cats? Just things that dont necessarily apply to a normal business.

I'm in the very early stages of this process, it's just something I've been thinking about lately and haven't really done any research. That will have to be the first major step. Maybe even seeing if I can find some time to visit a few in my state to see what they're all about. Any help or advice on the initial stages of planning a business, especially if it relates to pets, would be a huge help!

Cleaning businesses, can they be profitable?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2019 06:44 AM PDT

Hello, I'm living in Northern CO, and have been contemplating starting my own residential cleaning business for some time now, but am not sure if and how profitable they can be?

The idea for a cleaning business started over beers one night, so I have great ideas about naming and marketing, but nothing concrete yet for a plan. I do thoroughly enjoy cleaning, and assume it has a fairly low overhead cost (supplies, licensing, insurance, etc.) but don't know what the actual profits could look like. I also know it's going to take A LOT of work upfront, especially since I'll have a very small team (myself and one other), and our profits will be low for awhile. Can it be worth it in the end? I'd be giving up a career in firefighting for it, and that sounds scary!

    Any help would be great!
