[PRC] You Can’t Trust a Chinese Audit

    Posted: 05 Jun 2019 05:07 PM PDT

Many Chinese businesses are listed on U.S. stock exchanges, but Beijing's intransigence ensures that American investors often don't get a true picture of those companies' financial health. Chinese practices undermine the fair and transparent financial reporting at the heart of American capital markets. In December 2018, the SEC and PCAOB acknowledged that "for investors — both U.S. and non-U. S. investors — a U.S. listing carries with it the assumption that U.S. rules and regulatory oversight apply." When it comes to Chinese companies, that simply isn't true. The U.S. and its allies must send a clear message: If Chinese companies want to be listed on U.S. exchanges, they must comply with American laws and regulations for financial transparency and accountability.

Career options for TAX people after public

    Posted: 05 Jun 2019 05:53 AM PDT

Hi all, I see a lot of talk about life and career options after public, but they all seem specific to those who did audit.

What are some of the career options for tax people who want to get out? (More specific than "industry" or "government". For those of you who were tax in public, what do you do now?

EDIT For those of us really questioning, how far away from tax can you get with public tax experience? How far can you cast your net when evaluating your options?

How the hell do I get hired at B4 (Canada)

    Posted: 05 Jun 2019 09:30 PM PDT

Long time Lurker; It seems like everyone wants out BUT I want IN. Reasons are better experience, I want to meet new people, B4 prestige. I've read the hiring rate is only 2%. For context I've already have my Bachelor of Commerce; I'm enrolled in CPA, I have one year of experienced working as a staff accountant in industry.

Do you guys think if I just show up to an office with resume in hand, will I be laughed out the door? Or is there a chance they accept my resume and someone important looks at it. Applying online seems like a weak tactic. Showing up in person and applying usually works for me.

    Thanks for the advice

Experience opening a business while working as an accountant?

    Posted: 05 Jun 2019 04:03 PM PDT

Has anyone had experience opening a business while working as an accountant? What kind of business did you open and why? Do you feel that getting a degree in accounting helped you with your business?

    Will I get a job?

    Posted: 05 Jun 2019 06:43 PM PDT

    Hey guys,

I'm in my second year of a three year degree. In my first year I did absolutely awful and got awful grades, which was a bit of a wake up call so this year I have been trying much harder (not that it's showing much). I applied for a bunch of internships and got rejected by them all.

So what I'm wondering is, next year when I graduate will I be able to get a graduate position? Will working at a subpar firm shoot me in the foot career-wise?

    Thanks in advance.

Tips for first day of training/internship?

    Posted: 05 Jun 2019 05:54 PM PDT

So the God of Accounting has somehow blessed, or cursed, me with landing an internship with a well-reviewed tax service company. The vice-president was formerly Big 4 before starting his business and is a CPA with plenty of accomplishments 30+ years running. I guess I made a good impression on him during the interview so he's agreed to take me on for the semester but I can start my training this summer! My professor has good relations with him and have told me his previous students have been very successful working under him.

Well....my mind is reeling and I'm going over random accounting quizzes and whatnot and recalling what information that I can. He told me that he'll be training me himself from bank reconciliations to tax returns and so much more.

How do I not go in looking like an idiot? What do I bring with me not to look like an idiot?? My previous internship wasn't as nerve-wracking as they were more laid-back but that doesn't mean anything. I'm terrified.

    Big4 Referral Experience?

    Posted: 05 Jun 2019 05:00 PM PDT

If you received an interview through a referral, what was your recruiting process like? How long does it take to get the actual interview after your connection puts in the referral? Assuming you had two interviews, were they back to back? Were the interviews through video call or in person?

Any experience with Big 4 and H1b visa ?

    Posted: 05 Jun 2019 06:44 PM PDT

Does anyone know what happens if you don't get chosen in the H1b visa lottery after getting an offer from a B4? Do they just drop you and cut all ties ? Is there a process for trying again the next year?

Take Advanced Accounting or skip it?

    Posted: 05 Jun 2019 06:11 PM PDT

So I am within striking distance of being eligible, in terms of hours, to take the CPA Exam. I just need to finish my Ethics class and other Accounting class (Fraud Examination) this Summer.

While some are taking Advanced Accounting due to them going onto their Masters or wanting the Accounting certificate, I noticed a few are taking Advanced Accounting as they were told it was recommended as the FAR section dealt with Advanced Accounting.

Should I consider taking it? The only open classes for Advanced is in the Fall and I was really hoping to have a Job and be studying for the CPA by then.

    Senior/Manager level Cover Letters

    Posted: 05 Jun 2019 09:03 PM PDT

Does anyone have templates and/or recommendations for senior/manager level cover letters? I rewrote mine a couple times but it just feels so college-y and I'm afraid people just aren't looking for such a tone. Most googled stuff isn't very business-centric for experienced hires.

    Mining Industry Insight for Auditors

    Posted: 05 Jun 2019 07:25 PM PDT

    Hey All,

I'm a mining engineer with close to four decades of experience in the mining industry. I have worked in many roles from an underground miner to a Non-Executive Director.

I recently started a Meetup for people interested in investing in the mining industry and found that it attracted several accountants who were auditing mining company accounts and wanted to gain an insight into the industry.

I'm thinking of writing a book and/or developing some training courses and was wondering exactly what the pain points are for accountants/auditors working with exploration and mining companies? What aspects of the business are you struggling with? What drives you absolutely crazy?

    Regards

    Neville
