Why Join the Discord? Why Do We Have a Discord?

We wanted to give our wonderful community more dynamic ways to interact with one another and support each other.

Easier Ways to Find What You Need:

Discord offers us the ability to create content channels to better organize the community and direct people to where they should go for the most relevant assistance or connections.

We have some great channels set up to help you with How to Get Started, Marketing & Sales, Design, Hardware and Physical Products, Software Development, Team Building and Culture, Fundraising, and more.

We of course have channels dedicated to Feedback and sharing special promotions with the community.

    Regional Channels

We set up 20 key regional channels to allow you to easily find others that are near you or located in a place you will be visiting or are simply curious about. This may be one of the most fun benefits of the server.

Now, you can easily share and discover local events, find people to collaborate with, learn who are the local investors or community influencers in your area, and more. We already have a few members working together to start their own meetups to better than local community.

When you first join the Discord you will be brought to our #welcome channel. While in that channel you can simply click on a emoticon to join a regional channel.

Right now, this works best on a computer where you can utilize the mouse over effect to see the region name for each emoticon.

If you are stuck on mobile, just message a moderator on the Discord and tell them what regions you want to join:

    #africa

    #asia

    #canada

    #central-america

    #central-usa

    #china

    #eastern-europe

    #east-coast-usa

    #india

    #mexico

    #middle-east

    #nyc-area

    #oceania

    #russia

    #silicon-valley

    #south-america

    #southern-california

    #the-united-kingdom

    #west-coast-usa

    #western-europe

    Real Time Text Chat:

You get to interact with each other in real time. It's a more natural discussion and often leads to a deeper connection between community members.

    Voice Chat:

Voice chat takes that previous sentiment one step further. The ability to engage in voice chat allows for a more personal and real connection that text alone can not do. This is important to us, we want to drive authentic relationships. It is what makes a community strong and more supportive.

We have already begun to test new ways to utilize the voice chat to benefit you. Such as voice chat AMAs and voice chat events, like "Pitch to Your Peers" where you can practice pitching to each other for constructive feedback.

If you have suggestions or ideas of how to make the most of voice chat, please share them to the #administrivia channel on the Discord server.

More Support For Staying Focused and Finding More Happiness While on Your Journey

We set up a few special channels to help you get peer support while dealing with the overwhelming pressures of starting your own startup, trying to build your career, and whatever other activity is throwing mental hurdles at you.

We really want to help you each grow and be inspired by one another.

You can find channels for Emotional Support, Celebrating Your Successes, and Goal Setting & Management are dedicated to this.

These channels really do the best job at reflecting the culture we have been striving to cultivate throughout this sub and it makes us proud to see people using them already in such positive manners to support each other.

Easier To Share Your Feedback and Suggestions With the Moderators as a Whole Community

We set up the #administrivia channel so we can have an ongoing discussion with you and the rest of your community about how to improve the sub and the Discord.

This has been working really well so far and it is less contentious than over here on the sub, because it takes the form of an actual discussion.

Here on the sub is it almost an endless stream of random users launching into attacks against the mods. Usually, tied to them not feeling the need to read and follow our posted rules--even after being asked to do so (sometimes multiple times). The tools Reddit gives us makes it kinda hard for the mod team to really engage with you all in productive ways.

Over there, so far, it has been a fun experience where members of the community share their feedback and suggestions in really constructive and respectful ways. We get to have a real discussion about it, not just with that single person, but the rest of the community can join the discussion too. We have adopted some ideas as they were presented or used what was shared for inspiration to make other beneficial changes to the community.

If you have ideas, feedback, and suggestions for the sub, the Discord, or the community as a whole: come share them (in a polite and constructive manner).

    Verified Mentors

If you would like to be recognized on the Discord as an expert and mentor in a given field you can make sure a request. Mentors will be highlighted and we are working on fun events and special privileges tied to being a mentor.

Make your request in the #administrivia channel.

    Other Sub Notes

I know I have been saying we have plans in the works to improve the sub for a little while now. That has not changed.

We want to restructure how we do things over here on the sub to raise the volume of content and engagement on the sub.

I want to take a quick moment to remind everyone that moderators are volunteers.

We do not get paid to be moderators. We have real jobs, we are building real startups, or we are doing both at the same time.

We have bills to pay and people that depend on us to do so. We do our very best to carve out time to manage this community, build it, and ensure it represents a culture of of inspiring and educating people while building authentic relationships across the community. But, this is not our first priority in our lives. It can not be. But, it is still a priority and we do our very best.

So, please keep that in mind as you manage your expectations for timelines and the amount of effort you can get out of the mod team.

    Easing Up On Some Rules

We have been exploring a variety of ways to ease up on some of the rules. The core concern is maintaining a high level of quality over the content on the sub. We do not want to be another business focused sub that is overrun with shitty blog posts, self promotion, or other content that is reposted endlessly across that network of business related subs.

We want to feature content that is really focused around community engagement and driving interesting and beneficial discussions among you in the open with the rest of the community.

That said, we went really hard and really strict to set a clear precedent of what matters most here. To the extreme.

We recognize that certain exceptions to rules should be made when they show probative value to the community as a whole.

For Example: Sharing certain links and resources (articles) as part of a larger insightful comment that explains the relevance of what is being shared to another would be an exception. Simply posting a link would not.

We are discussing how to change the rules to best reflect this slightly more lenient attitude towards specific behavior.

The main thing is that before we instituted the much stricter rules EVERYONE was looking for a way to offer an insincere comment in order to push a link to their own shit. So, do not want to invite that behavior to run rampant again (it is still an issue, but not nearly as much).

If you have suggestions or ideas, you can share them here. Just remember to be respectful and try to remember that we have very clear and specific goals for the culture of this community: Inspire, educate, build authentic relationships--quality over quantity.

    Verified Flair on the Sub

If you would like to get special flair to highlight that you are an industry expert, investor, or something else we would like to grant you such flair.

We want to help the community better understand who they are talking with and who they should trust/listen to regarding specific topics.

You can make your request using the Message the Moderator feature in the side bar/about section.

    New Weekly Themed Events

We are discussing adding new themed events to the sub throughout the week. The Weekly Feedback and Support thread is great, but we would like more happening to encourage you all to spend more time sharing and getting to know one another.

We were thinking about some ideas that focus around things like "How to Get Started", "Share Your Week's Goals", "Marketing and Sales Brainstorming", "Ideation"

What ideas do you have? What think tanks and discussions would you like to have each week with your community? What do you need most to help you stay focused, find inspiration, overcome hurdles, find your way, and simply grow as a person and grow your business? You can share your ideas here in a comment. No dumb suggestions. It all has great value and will inspire us.

    On Going AMA Schedule

As mentioned above in the Voice Chat overview, we have tested running an AMA on Discord using the Voice Chat. It went very well. We are going to leverage this additional channel of engagement to recruit AMA subjects for you to gain access to.

When we schedule an AMA it will take place on both the sub and the Discord. It will begin with time spent on the sub and conclude with time on the Discord running a voice chat with you.

It will result in giving you and the subject two fun ways to interact and give the community two different ways to digest great content to support growth.

If you have suggestions for people we should reach out to, share them here: https://goo.gl/forms/gDwtn6kPjcvMk2Jj1

Larger Restructuring of the Sub Linked to the Redesign

The Redesign is starting to offer the moderators across Reddit some new tools. They are still a far cry from what mod truly need.

Most of this is linked to how Reddit is struggling to accept that it is no longer an aggregator platform and has evolved into a community platform.

But, they have started to add some new stuff to help us have more control over our communities and bring you more benefits.

As these new tools are released and we learn how to appropriately use them you will see some more obvious changes to the sub. We will make more formal announcements as necessary as that happens. Again, we are still discovering the new stuff that was just pushed out and working with Admin to understand and help influence the roadmap of what is coming next so we can better support you.

In fact, everyone should be using the Redesign for viewing our sub. It has the most recent and updated set of rules and other relevant changes.

That is it for now. Remember, if you have feedback or criticism to share here you must do so in a polite and productive manner. Be kind to one another and the mod team.

Teach us a lesson. Share your failed business stories

    Posted: 23 Mar 2019 03:07 PM PDT

Hey, we love hearing success stories of how people create startups based on their brilliant ideas and then skyrocket. These people encourage us to dream, carry on and try harder. But I believe those who failed have much more to tell and teach us!

Share main reasons why your ex-businesses failed. What was wrong? what problems did you have? (or you might tell us your friend/family member stories)

Please do not just say financial problems. Financial problem is a result, not a reason.

Your answer might help someone to overcome potential problems and survive!

How did you decide between bootstrapping slowly and looking for VC money?

    Posted: 23 Mar 2019 10:48 AM PDT

I've been working on a side-project for the past 1.5 years on nights and weekends. It solves a real problem with a large market potential.

I had a successful paid pilot and the customer was ecstatic and I got another wannabe customer (didn't work out for other reasons).

I need help, though. The product needs help and there's ways to go until it's ready to fully hit the market.

Should I keep trying to grow organically? Or should I more seriously try to get a much-needed growth-spurt to try to dominate the vacuum I see in the market.

I'm sure I'm not the first person to have this quandary, so I'd love to hear other people's experiences.

Thinking of starting a tech company

    Posted: 24 Mar 2019 01:18 AM PDT

So i'm thinking of starting a tech company but the problem is I dont have any tech background. This is in my mind for 6-7 years already, meanwhile i started another business and I have arount 150k$ to invest in a tech company. I want to mention that although I do not have technical background, I have a lot of friends who work in this area, and the city which i'm in has its economy based on IT. I know there are a lot of big companies who are outsourcing some of their projects to smaller companies (like the one i'm thinking). So I have the financing but not the know-how. I would be glad to hear your opinion on this. Cheers !

Edit - I forgot to mention that in these years, I had to manage a team of 15 people, so I have the knowledge on how to lead a team, and manage a business which grew annually.

    Losing confidence in my idea

    Posted: 23 Mar 2019 04:27 PM PDT

One year ago I had an itch, and decided to scratch it myself. I build a very simple product that allowed me to solve my problem (software solution). The problem has to do without transporting messages from A to B. I found out other people were having my problem aswel and I posted on a forum that I had the solution. At the time the product was an MVP, settings were set with text and UX was terrible. However, people were still willing to buy it. I have multiple customers that all paid between 150-300 euro voor my solution (I think this is quite a hefty sum for a simple software solution focused on consumers ). Now 1 year later, I've been trying to create a scalable version, but development is tragically slow, and I'm not getting new customers often( I havent done anything for marketing aside posting on a forum that one time). I'm not using the program myself anymore, and lost my grand vision of what the product should become. I know my customers use the software for a wide variety of usecases so I find it hard to determine a general direction for the company. The combination of slow development and me not using the program myself anymore have made me lose faith in my product. Should I continue developing, and if so, how do I regain confidence?

Any tips for marketing this product?

    Posted: 23 Mar 2019 11:25 AM PDT

    Hi everyone,

I'm a software developer who has a passion solving a problem. Recently I've developed a platform. It's a platform for businesses to send receipts to customers using an API. I'm in the process of thinking of a strategy of marketing such product. I've tried a few advertisements and posted it project showcase websites. However, I'm stuck on where to begin for this product. I do have one competitor which is focussed on integrating it to banks but I want to focus on integrating it on company services. Where do you think I should start?

    Thank you.

Hey guys - check out this new subreddit: r/aiml_stories_products on AIML projects and products. Feel free to post and discuss your AI/ML startups there

    Posted: 23 Mar 2019 01:05 PM PDT

    Hey fellow startup enthusiasts -

I wanted to invite you to check out a new subreddit i started - r/aiml_stories_products. Would love to see you there. Feel free to post your startups, projects, and products that are related to AIML.

I have been looking for an online community to discuss cool AI/ML products and projects people have been working on. Think of this subreddit - r/aiml_stories_products - as a bit of Product Hunt but for AI/ML.

I envision people can post their own products and projects and get questions and feedback from the community.

In addition, just to keep on top of the latest happenings please feel free to submit quality AI/ML news stories.

Super excited to build my first subreddit and look forward to growing it with you :)

    Thanks.

PS: I asked mods' permission to post this here.

    Best Conferences?

    Posted: 23 Mar 2019 11:53 PM PDT

    Hi Everyone,

I currently attend CES in Las Vegas and MWC in Barcelona every year per my manager's request to look for promising startups to possibly invest in. This year he has asked me to attend a few more events but I am not sure which other ones are the best as these seem to be the biggest ones. I have looked online and have seen mixed reviews about some of them but I am considering IFA Berlin and Websummit in Lisbon. It would be great if someone who has been to these shows could share their opinion and/or suggest other events. Thank you!

Most optimal list of startup tools/platforms in 2019

    Posted: 23 Mar 2019 11:10 PM PDT

Hey guys. What's the most efficient list of startup tools that you guys use for the following categories? Please feel free to add more categories and write in replacements that you would suggest. My current list is below. I'd like to consolidate the tools as much as possible also - so don't need the #1 in each category.. If one tool can hit 2+ categories well, even if not the best, that's preferable.

    Task organization - Trello

    Doc storage - Google drive

    Doc collaboration - Google docs

    Messaging - Slack

    Document management - ?

    Employee management - ?

    Customer management - ?

Anything else? Where does Sharepoint, Salesforce, etc. fit into all this? Thx.

    Monetization recommendation

    Posted: 23 Mar 2019 07:39 PM PDT

To prevent being labelled as a self promoter I will not provide any links and names.

I want to start a business creating and developing AIs for businesses. As a marketing plan I created two AIs that were to look at the stock market and I would publish the results. The idea is that as my knowledge of AI improved so would the iterations of these AIs and with this I could publish increasingly better results. Generating a small but growing following to see how good these would get. Some of these followers would most likely be future customers.

Fast forward to when the first set of predictions start coming in. Results are horrible but quickly the results start becoming much more accurate. I now believe that I might have a product in these AI models. Note: Time will tell if these are nothing more than glass cannons that work well until the first real hurdle (ie: rescission, election, depression, war)

I'm debating with myself how to monetize my current situation. I know these are sub par AIs compared to what I could make today. These are good AIs don't get me wrong, it is just my knowledge base has grown since the 6 months I've created them.

I see possible options are as follows:

    a) invest my own money: This is the go to statement for everyone including myself. If I give a little more information about me you will understand the limitations of this option. I don't have debt but my savings are running on empty. With predictions coming to fruition every two months, I don't have the capital to feel comfortable to play the numbers game (For gamblers I'm talking about your bank. What you use to survive periods you are not profitable).

-Note: I have invested my own capital but this is mostly to test and it is not a substantial amount.

    b) Since I've already been posting the predictions online. I could convert my site and information into a source of income:

-i) Advertising (minimal daily views but very high unique visit to impressions ratio- users who come read and stroll the site)

-ii) Membership to get e-mailed / text notifications of predictions

-iii) Membership to get information on most accurate AIs.

-iii) Membership to get information on predictions shared by multiple AIs. (Premise being the more agree, the better chance it will come true)

-iv) Fee to ask an AI(s) what they think of a stock.

    c) Find a richer entity to purchase these AIs off my hands giving me the capital to develop much better AIs using better hardware (current bottle neck).

    d) An idea brought forward by a brilliant reddit users creative brain. Please leave a comment.

To summarize I just would like the options of the users of r/startups as to how should I potentially monetize this product. The reason I ask is because I know that there are dead end models that will take a while to be determined as dead ends. I would want to know which would be the monetization models to avoid for [insert your reason].

Note: I am the developer if you have any questions about this I will be happy to provide as much anonymous answers as possible.

If you think this is odd and why the hell I'm not just posting a link please let me know as well.

How do you deal with international legalities? I.E., if what you're doing is legal in your home country, but illegal elsewhere, how do you handle it?

    Posted: 23 Mar 2019 09:07 AM PDT

I woke up to a "friend" email from the U.K. law enforcement (probably a legitimate email) asking me to remove some content from my website because they are upset about it. In the U.S., I'm 100% protected under free speech. Since I'm in the business of free speech, that's something I have to consider.

How do you handle it when other countries deem your product illegal or otherwise unsavory and ask you to take action? Are you inclined to go along with it or would you take a stand?

    Thoughts?

How did you get your first paying users?

    Posted: 23 Mar 2019 07:21 AM PDT

I searched this sub but couldn't find a good thread on how people got their first users except how Uber, Whatsapp, Snapchat, etc got their first users posts. They are great posts but I didn't see threads where people of this sub shared how they got their first paying users. I am developing an online reputation management system for local businesses and I have good competitions too. I've tried to reach to people via relevant Facebook groups but I hardly get any response. There's no use in launching my product in betalist or directories because my audience doesn't hang out there much.

I've completed my MVP and wanted to see and follow some tactics behind "do things that don't scale".

    Startup or job making 100K?

    Posted: 23 Mar 2019 03:18 PM PDT

I have a dilemma. I really want to do another startup. Yes, I have startup experience. My last 2 failed but each time I learned a ton! But there's a slight problem. I may be offered a job making $100,000. Here's my situation. I'm a 40 year old woman. I'm not working now as I'm temporarily disabled. Had to move in with my parents in the Midwest because I couldn't work. I bring in around $1500/mo in disability income in which l pay my parents a little in rent but other than that no really large expenses. It's the perfect time for me to start a company. No rent, no husband or kids. The only embarrassment is that I'm 40 living with my parents but they're totally cool. I also have access to venture capital and advisers. Btw I'm a software engineer and suffered a brain injury 4 years ago. My cognitive function is getting better but feel I'm better suited for a startup. If I fail I can always get a job. Or should I take the job and do a startup on the side? Any thoughts?

    Chicken and egg problem

    Posted: 23 Mar 2019 08:44 AM PDT

We have developed a platform where users can add reviews based on the personal experience of a local place or can find a place near them with genuine reviews. But we can't expect explorers unless there are substantial number of reviews on the platform. So we are trying to collaborate with guides but finding it hard to find them. We have listed apps on several websites. We have started adword campaigns and so on but haven't had expected no. Of conversions yet. Any suggestion is welcome here!
