    The Personal MBA

    By Josh Kaufman

    About The Author

His aim—with all his books—is to help you make more money, be productive, and have more fun and happiness. His key areas of focus are the fundamentals of business, solo entrepreneurship, rapid skill acquisition, optimal decision-making, personal science, and core human skills.

You can get this book for free with a trial of audible by using the link in the description of this video.

    The Book's Main Idea

Mental models are the book's big idea. Kaufman notes that once you understand your mental models, the framework that defines how you learn anything, you can learn any business related skill and core business concepts and frameworks.

By understanding and applying mental models, a universal framework by which we learn important business concepts, we rapidly improve our ability to understand, learn, and tackle complex business disciplines or frameworks.

The foundational mental models Kaufman discusses in the book are (1) Value creation, (2) Marketing, (3) Sales, (4) Value delivery, and (5) Finance. Each of these models focuses on core business concepts, principles, and vocabularies.

"Every successful business (1) creates or provides something of value that (2) other people want or need (3) at a price they're willing to pay, in a way that (4) satisfies the purchaser's needs and expectations and (5) provides the business sufficient revenue to make it worthwhile for the owners to continue operation."

    Josh Kaufman

A look at the main ideas shared in the book

"Business schools don't create successful people. They simply accept them, and then take credit for their success."

    Josh Kaufman

1: Understand and utilize your mental faculties

The functionalities of our brains influence our ability to learn core business disciplines, principles, systems, and processes. How capable we are of utilizing our mental faculties in relation to learning core business processes, principles, and models largely depends on a concept Kaufman calls the "Gas Tank."

For your brain to work at optimal levels, your "gas tank," or your energy levels, must remain optimal at all times. To keep the 'gas tank' full, the author recommends a proper diet—eating healthy and balanced meals in the right proportion to your energy needs—exercising—exercise every day—direct sunlight—and adequate sleep—getting 7-8 hours of quality sleep every night.

Most of the "gas tank" strategies recommended by the author require willpower, which has limitations and is not easy to practice. To circumvent this, i.e. our limited reserves of willpower, Kaufman suggests changing our environment—instead of our behavior—using a structured model. For instance, if you want to lose weight and ice cream is your kryptonite, instead of forcing yourself to stop eating ice cream, change your environment by avoiding its purchase altogether.

"Save your Willpower: focus on using it to change your Environment, and you'll have more available to use whenever Inhibition is necessary"

    Josh Kaufman

2: Before you work with others, learn how to work with yourself

Businesses are about interpersonal relationships and the ability to collaborate well with others to achieve a mutual goal. Effective collaboration with others demands that you first learn how to work with yourself, of which to do, you must first learn how to get into a 'state of flow', or as the author calls it, 'how to implement the concept of mono-idealism,' the ability to focus all your attention and energy on one aspect of your business/learning process.

To utilize mono-idealism and attain a state of flow—Kaufman notes it takes the mind about 10-30 minutes to get into flow—he suggests eliminating all forms of interruptions or distraction from the working/learning environment.

To eliminate distractions and interruptions, he offers suggestions such as muting all notifications, disconnecting from the internet, and working in 'dashes,' 10-30 minutes of focused, committed work. He also mentions mindfulness and focused meditation as a way to increase attention and the ability to experience flow.

On working effectively on your own, Kaufman introduces the idea of MIT (Most Important Task), a concept whose main idea is to create a To-do list consisting of two to three important tasks you want to complete by day's end. He goes on to note that attaching a deadline to each of these tasks improves focus and overall productivity.

    Conclusion

"New skills create new opportunities, and new opportunities often translate into more income"

    Josh Kaufman

To learn new skills—or accomplish anything worthwhile for that matter—write down your goal, use one sentence to describe the motivation behind the aim (the desired outcome), create a list of necessary action steps, and track your progress using a trusted system.

We co-founded a record label in Vermont. Just made a website and now are selling t shirts. Any advice is appreciated

    Posted: 23 Mar 2019 10:23 AM PDT

Like the titles says, Equal Eyes Records is a one year old small independent label based in Burlington, Vt. We have released over 10 projects in that one year, with some of the most well respected hip hop artists in the state. We just launched our own website and began selling t shirts.

At this point, we would like the t shirts to become to profit making division. Outside advertising is our next step, and with little experience we are just reaching out for any tips or suggestions.

6 ways to promote your business online for free

    Posted: 23 Mar 2019 03:10 AM PDT

    1. Ensure the presence of your business in the maps of the main search engines.

The vast majority of search engines have services in which to register the location of your premises. The registration is free and offers you the possibility to appear in the results of local searches.

In our country, the search engine par excellence is Google, so it is essential to appear in your results. Google Places allows you to register your business and place it on Google Maps and even link it to a Google Plus page. The benefits are multiple since the presence and interactions across the Google network are positioned as one of the main forms of search engine optimization in the immediate future.

Other search engines, such as Bing, also have a service with similar characteristics.

    1. Publish a blog.

Having a business blog offers two great advantages :

    - is a way to directly contact your audience or customers, and

    - Help your company to gain value in front of the public.

Also, if you have the opportunity to publish articles in other blogs specific to your sector, you will be contributing to the marketing of your business.

    1. Promote your business in Social Networks

Social networks allow us to connect with friends and entertain ourselves, but in addition, today they have become free promotional tools.

Facebook, Twitter, Google Plus and Linkedin are free distribution channels, although they also have payment options that allow advertising for a specific audience. We must not forget that they allow us to be where people spend a large part of their time.

    1. Send your clients newsletters

Every time your company participates in an event or you receive a new product, it is vital to inform your customers, and email marketing is a very interesting advertising tool since it allows you to send to a list of emails that information that you consider interesting to spread. Applications like MailChimp offer a free subscription service and tools for email marketing.

    1. Publish a photo catalog

Flickr or Instagram allows you to collect photographs of your business, services or products for free and even integrate those galleries on your website. Any relevant update in your business is an excuse to take photos and upload them.

    1. Upload videos to YouTube

More than one billion unique users visit YouTube every month, so, it becomes a showcase where you can distribute free promotional videos.

As you can see, there are many possibilities, and many are those who have taken advantage of the pull of social networks to promote themselves. Of course, it is very important that the content you offer in any of the networks mentioned are interesting and relevant to your customers or users, and are related to your activity.

Best way to sell/setup my web based training app?

    Posted: 23 Mar 2019 09:21 AM PDT

Hi all, made a post a few months ago, but I need some advice. If you have any advice in a blog/web app or training role that'd be great.

I've been making a training app for written exams in aviation subjects, and its slowly coming, as im a self taught guy, still lots to do. my plan is this so far, make the exam part pay for, but itll be much cheaper than other other courses or books, while keeping up the quality. Also will add some special features included in it to be more useful. A somewhat example would be Bold method I like what they do but somethings id do differently. and no mine wouldnt be in the US.

My problem is that Id like to also add videos and other content to of course explain the subjects to the student, and also just general articles about subjects I find interesting, and i was toying with several ideas. and im worrying about it now because itll change how i go about developing it, and what would get me more customer interaction.

    1. Put it all on the one site and have them pay for the whole course per subject
    2. Start a blog type thing for free with videos on youtube and articles and make the content free but the exams as a service they'd pay for

and on top of that I'm thinking of also talking to the actual schools and see if they would want a tool like this, and see if they would do something like give me a percentage of sales for their students to use it. Provide the teachers with tools as well.

Thing is the niche is smaller and I need a way to draw people in, as there are already a few places to get this that are well established, but are in my opinion behind the curve, not using up to date tech and making it easier for students

Any thoughts would be great, I've just had this idea in my head for a while.

How do you find a good digital marketing agency to deal with?

Visualize a website's structure - link architecture - to see the top-down view of all the pages

    Posted: 22 Mar 2019 11:54 PM PDT

I've built a free tool that visualizes a website's structure

When researching competitors (for SEO) it's good to get a quick overview of their website structure. What are their top level pages? How many pages deep do they link to? What pages does the home page link to?
Also can be useful when make a presentation for a client.

This works on most websites - except for a few edge cases and JS based frameworks.

Listed a few examples on this blog post.

If you want to give this a try, here is the link to the tool.

    Thanks!

    Looking for bottle filling equipment

    Posted: 23 Mar 2019 02:41 PM PDT

I am looking for bottle filling equipment. Our bottles are 30ml glass bottles. Right now we produce about 1000 bottles to 2000 bottles today. I do this out of house and I work mainly by myself. I just want to increase effiency by getting some equipment that will allow me to dispense the liquid into multiple bottles at once. Since I'm a small business and don't have alot of space so I want a compact option. I've seen some bottle fillers on Amazon but not sure of their durability. Does anyone have any recommendations for some equipment that is decently priced.

I would like some criticism on what I've been doing...

    Posted: 23 Mar 2019 10:02 AM PDT

Hello all, I've made a view posts here in the past and got some very good answers, so I'm back again. This time it's a little different. I'm 16 and have a lot of ideas floating around in my head and would like to go out and just execute, but I've got a big problem with strategics and planning and this is really holding me back. Do these thoughts and ideas sound solid?

    1. For the past 2-ish months, I've been experimenting with Social Media Marketing and Video Marketing, I've gotten camera equipment and, right now, just focusing on getting good at filming and general video making and creating content and have got some dates lined up with a local Boy Scout Troop to shoot a ceremony and they've agreed to help promote me, after about 8-12 months, I'll try to start marketing myself, that way I'll have a good content base for people to judge me off of
    2. I want to start a lawn mowing side hustle, and I've got the skill and experience to do so and I think with time, I could turn it into something. But I've never had a high school job before, like working at a supermarket or a restaurant. Should I abandon the lawn mowing thing or all of this and get a job or what?
    3. Lawn mowing or SMM, both or one or none
    4. Being 16, I'm still in high school and obviously have school things and other somewhat important stuff. Figuring this stuff out hasn't really left my head since I "started", How often should I be working towards my goals? Should I be staying up until 3 in the morning or just a little bit each day?
    5. My parents really aren't behind me in all of this? Any tips for people who have dealt with people not supporting you?

I'll take any criticism, you can call me a wantrepreneur or whatever you want...

Question about paying affiliates and influencer's

    Posted: 23 Mar 2019 01:14 PM PDT

I'm considering using influencer's and affiliates for the online business I'm about to start. My question is, how do small businesses facilitate low but frequent monetary payments.

For example, an influencer shares a post and for every purchase collected through the post I give them 5$. Would I pay them through paypal? How is tax done on this, especially if they are making less than 50$?

Any ideas or thoughts would be appreciated.

    Thanks!

How to deal with people stealing your work and then reselling it?

    Posted: 23 Mar 2019 03:29 AM PDT

As the title says I am wondering what is the best way to deal with people stealing the works of others?

To add some context I know a freelancer graphic designer who advertises her work on Instagram as templates so that people an choose the ones they like and pay her for the right to use them and to remove the watermark and modify them according to the customers. However, there are some people (other 'graphic designers' and customers) that steal her work and remove her watermark using photoshop.

I know this graphic designer personally and I know that she's a passionate and a hard worker. It's frustrating to see other people stealing her work and then reselling them!! Please, people of reddit, help me to help this friend of mine. What ia the best course of action to take?

(Just to be clear we live in a place where copyright laws are loose at best. Therefore, legal action is not really an option)

13 (not so common) principles for entrepreneurial success

    Posted: 23 Mar 2019 11:52 AM PDT

    1 Add value first

Gain trust by providing something of value first without expectation. This gets you very far with customers and personal relationships. Don't squeeze your customers for every penny, especially early. Too many people are tight lipped with helpful advice. Share it. Gain trust and thus loyalty and profit later.

    2. 80 percent of your results will come from 20 percent of your effort

Same with profit and customers. Don't get lost in the weeds. Work in your wheelhouse and continue to double down on what is generating the highest ROI for you and your business.

    3. Say NO more often

Early on saying yes is what leads to small wins and momentum. Casting a wide net early on can be a great strategy. As you get more successful guard your time and stay focused. Scope creep is a real thing with all business. Don't be afraid to turn away customers to stay focused. There will be many many customers who reach out to you that aren't in your wheelhouse and your service isn't for them. Tell them so and focus on the people who you built it for.

    4. Outsource your weaknesses

Don't try to be a jack of all trades - you'll end up being a master of none. Get really really good at what you do best and outsource everything else.

    5. Start small and start local

You don't need to touch millions to make millions. Start with 10 true customers. Then 20. Some great businesses can be build with 100 true fans. Don't try to build your product/service for everyone or it will end up not working for anyone. Customers want you to specialize.

    6. Passion doesn't move product

Too many people start businesses based on their own selfish desires. If you are passionate about it chances are so are thousands of other people. The market doesn't care what you want to spend your time doing. Build a business based on a gap and a need. Don't try to turn your passions into business. Be passionate about building something and entrepreneurship. Think with your head - not your heart. These businesses are targets for passionate illogical people so be careful.

    7. Ego is the enemy

A lot of business is being in the right place at the right time. An early win can lead to an amplified failure. Your ego can lead to filtering the incoming information based only on what you want to hear. It can cloud your judgement. Being right is more important than finding the BEST solution. Stay humble. Encourage those around you to challenge you. Change your mind quickly and often if the data points to it.

    8. Work on the stuff that is important but not urgent

Everybody works hard. You can't succeed by out working the next guy. You have to work on the things that are important but not urgent. Make the decision that removes a thousand future decisions. Think ahead. Do the uncommon work.

    9. Its not about finding great people. Its about simplifying the job

I know there are exceptions to this. But to do anything at scale you need to simplify what you are asking out of your employees. They need to specialize. Ask them to be very good at one or two things and ignore everything else. Set up your systems so NORMAL people can do very well at your company.

    10. Keep your emotions out of your decisions

Be a stoic. Think logically and calmly in the face of stress, uncertainty, anger and fear. This is the skill that will get you very very far and save you tons in damage control. Read Ryan Holiday's The Daily Stoic and The Obstacle is the Way.

    11. Don't sleep on service businesses

Choose your competition wisely. Its a lot easier to compete on a local level with the mom and pop down the street than on a global level with venture capital and big money. Here is a list of service businesses I love.

    12. Control your own platform

Don't rely on other platforms to bring you customers. Starbucks spent hundreds of millions getting facebook followers. Then facebook changed the algorithm and now Starbucks still has to pay to reach them. Amazon Basics comes out with new products daily that completely crush businesses who previously dominated. YouTube is changing the way it interacts with its content producers daily. When you are dependent on a third party you are at risk.

    13. Gossip is contagious cancer

Keep it out of your company and do not let it into your life.

BONUS: You don't build a network - you earn a network

Networking is important - don't get me wrong. Your network will become valuable only after you bring something to the table. Build your first company. Get really good at something. Then your network will be fruitful.

    BONUS #2: Frugality wins.

Start a lean business that can survive change. Keep your expenses variable. Buy things used. The longer you can operate without taking a profit the better off you will be.

I have a website that made a couple $100 within the last months, where can I sell it?

    Posted: 23 Mar 2019 09:56 AM PDT

I created a platform where I connect clients to freelancers for a small fee, it has made a couple $100 within the last months.

But since I have a main job I can't spend any more time on it. I am referring clients to freelancers and charge them a monthly fee of $19. Once a client submits a new project an email is send out to the list of freelancers and the one who accepts the job first gets the client/project and can work with him on his own terms.

It is pretty much all automated from project submission to sending out the email and tracking of someone paid via Paypal to mark the project as closed. The only work is really getting new clients, or setting up ads. I did it manually without ads and haven't spend a penny so far on marketing.
