Do I need to accept wire transfer payments if I want clients in foreign countries? Posted: 25 Dec 2018 03:02 AM PST As a general best practice, do you think it's necessary to accommodate clients in other countries by accepting wire transfers for payment? My biz is in the USA. Most of our clients are in the USA. These clients pay us with credit cards, debit cards, paper checks, or ACH. These are the options we offer and none of these clients have a problem. A few clients are in foreign countries and prefer to use bank wire transfers. I plan to do more business with foreign companies in the future. According to these clients, wire transfers are their preferred method of payment for US vendors because other options are difficult for them to manage. Wire transfers make keeping books more difficult. They go around our accounting system and require manual search and processing. The amount we receive is always off by a small amount because of bank fees. It's a hassle and I'd like to just force clients to use standard methods, but I don't want to hurt my future potential foreign business. EDIT: I did not include a list of countries we do business with because I'm interested in a general best practice and do not select specific countries to do or not do business with. Posted: 24 Dec 2018 12:34 PM PST Has anyone ever used the media to talk about a disruptive technology or business before? I have a powerful technology but no clue how to get the media to give me time to talk about it. A press release is often recommended by others to me but I do not think the media would follow through... This is part of my potential marketing plan where media attention, a science white paper, paid social media posts, and possibly paid radio ads would be how I would try to get attention. Make my business more professional Posted: 25 Dec 2018 12:35 AM PST Hi everyone, hope you're enjoying the holidays. Tl:Dr I run a small business and want to what I can do to make it run in smoother, more professional, systematic and sustainable manner. The longer version is this. I stumbled across an opportunity and my business is doing well but, it is run more or less in an adhoc manner. What I would like to do is make it more professional but I have no management experience and haven't the foggiest on how to go about it. Particularly where our accounting and sales are concerned. If you can give me a few suggestions, or just a general go down this road it will be helpful. Thank you. [link] [comments] |
Reimbursement for end of the year purchases. Can I write them off this year? Posted: 24 Dec 2018 07:22 AM PST I had a couple jobs come in at the end of the year and has left me with a bit of a surplus. There are a few things I want to buy for my business, but I am curious about the timing. Normally when I am doing a job I have to put things on a credit card. Sometimes this means I put these things on my personal credit card and then reimburse them as an option on my payroll service. I am reaching that window where my payroll won't pay me until next year, therefore I won't get my reimbursement until next year. Does that mean I can't write off those purchases this year? Or does that mean that sense I reimburse myself next year, it goes on next year's taxes? I could write myself a check, but I know if it is more than 10k there is paperwork invovled. Ideally I would like the reimbursement to cone through my payroll. I should note I'm an sole LLC. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 24 Dec 2018 07:54 PM PST Hello, I have 3 clients that i do buisness for. It is mostly Bookkeeping, payroll, accounting, and basic small business consulting on large projects. What separates me from competition is a few things; 1 ) I also offer Marketing (graphic and scheme- from proposal of scheme, implementation, cost benefit, SM, etc) and Web Development (these; especially web- are mostly sub-contracted to someone i've an agreement with to "share clientele." 1 I also do Sales- Training, Introduction, 2 weeks in person course or just hour base steps etc. I have very relevant experience in all this. I recently had a friend of a friend type who I know is very wealthy talk to me of opening a business. I have her give me her "elevator pitch" she didnt know what that was really... and I told her you need X, Y, B immediately; take this as free advice. You are the first I've ever done it for free but seriously, i know what you want to do and the scale... We both know you can't do it alone; you know I've helped X. Done sold. I'm being paid to do business plan and number for projects, break even analysis, etc. Those have been done; she was asking if the BEA included my bonus fee. I said yes it has work preformed and what I proposed next steps for me today. And she basically called me part of the team and her partner. She relies greatly on my information and knowledge. I know what she can and can't afford due to margins- though this is a new business going into business as a supplier for a few vendors. With my guidance at the top I can turn her into a selling machine of the product. We already have economies of scale in the industry which supply is low so that's good. I am afraid of under-stating my worth if I am CFO of this company from the beginning. I am also a bit cautious of whether I should stick with projects on hand and run or become her W-2 employee and get started payroll. I will still have time for my 3 other clients; small workload. I believe to start a business in which you have to deal with FDA (not food service) but transportation of seafood, learning about that, dealing with regulators, doing books, cutting checks, etc. Is a 50% profit job. So I kindof want to build that in. Is it fair to ask for 45,000 a year and 1/3 profit paid yeary. Otherwise I think its fair to say 80,000/yo or 1/3 profit (1/3 profit exceeds 80,000. She could hit a million in sales year 2-3 if my research has been correct. Am I being greedy in how much I'm asking? I'm doing all the leg work for the business. Shes utilizing some relationships and financing it. (Cheap to start; funds are low for me as I just put it all into differnet venture). Or should I just charge her based off work provided monthly- log hours if I have to. etc. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 24 Dec 2018 11:06 PM PST Hi all, So I've just started my tutoring business, exciting stuff. But it's the start of the school year, everyone's mocks have come back good enough that the few enquiries I've had have all turned me down in the end. Me and my family are now broke, due to circumstances outside of this (no Christmas kinda broke). I'm the stay at home parent, child care is hella expensive until I know I have lessons booked. I teach primarily biology but also teach the other sciences at GCSE and A-level. Trying to learn enough Maths to expand my base. Social media is going very slow, even is shared around local community groups. I'm trying to write a study book but am aware that without a presence it will fail too. I am thinking of expanding into something else whilst it becomes more "mature" and untill summer, where kids will really be bricking it. -Originally thinking mugs and crafty bits but the start up costs to make it viable are more than we can afford, which is practically 0 unless stuff starts selling on eBay. Anyone with ideas? Thanks in advance, GG101 [link] [comments] |
Any B2B Companies Out There? What do you offer and where are your struggles? Posted: 24 Dec 2018 11:38 AM PST As one who offers B2B writing services to those in technology, finance & law I wanted to explore a little more about B2B companies in general. For small businesses looking to break into B2B markets I would like to know a couple things to help me better my offerings for clients while understanding more about the complexities you face.
Appreciate any and all input given. You're helping me provide better solutions to help small businesses like yours succeed! Happy Holidays. [link] [comments] |
Changing pay periods in california questions Posted: 24 Dec 2018 11:51 AM PST We do 1-15 / 16-31 pay periods. We've been thinking of changing to biweekly. I called DIR for california and i was surprised they answered and are open today, but looks like most staff are gone as I got someone who sounded drunk basically so I'm not confident in what I heard. So we already paid Dec 1-15, could we switch it to have pay periods ending every other friday (biweekly) but since it won't be a perfect 14 days the first time, can we just do Dec 16-28 pay period (13 days) and then proper from then on out? Dec 29-Jan 11, etc. As long as we let employees know of course. This is for burlingame, santa monica, and san francisco. It'll be ok to change for all 3 locations right? [link] [comments] |
Sole Proprietorship tax - 1099 Posted: 24 Dec 2018 07:21 PM PST Usually I don't file taxes because I don't owe any taxes (Don't make profits). I just noticed that I got money from 1099 before the last quarter and I didn't report it (Didn't even see that I got the money). How can I report it now? I don't really have any profits this quarter ( My income was barely $300). I asked for the 1099 months ago but I just noticed that I got the money on August (amount of $900). What should I do? Does a software consultant qualify for the 2018 20% deduction? Posted: 24 Dec 2018 11:39 AM PST I run a one-person (me) LLC that's elected to be taxed as an S corp. I've heard that consultants won't qualify for the 20% pass through deduction break - any other software consultants researched this? Would I also qualify for the 100% writeoff of 2018-bought business equipment? [link] [comments] |

Posted: 24 Dec 2018 02:31 PM PST Hello I am 18 and my friend and I own a land scaling company. I am currently enrolled in my freshman year of college and I am wanting to double or triple our clients this up coming season. We currently mow all 9 McDonald's in my city along with 60 other residential properties full time a long with the jobs that call us once and a while when they need a mow. We do all landscaping that included a mowing, edging, and blowing off all the clipping. We also trim bushes and trees and trim shrubs... anything we can to make money. My question is how can I use Facebook to create ads to gain customers in the upcoming season. I want to start advertising a month before the mowing season. Everything we have done to get customers so far is word of mouth and going door to door handing out flyers. So can you guys help me think of some ways to advertise that won't be boring. I also thought about adding some incentive such as a free first mow when you book two more after or something. [link] [comments] |
Anyone registered as a DBA? Question about reregistration. Posted: 24 Dec 2018 01:51 PM PST Do you need to reregister your DBA if you need to add an article to the title? Ex: if my DBA is called, "Plumber's Choice," would I need to reregister it (filing, posted in the newspaper, etc.) if I want to be known as, "The Plumber's Choice"? [link] [comments] |
Need help generating revenue with small audio production/songwriting business Posted: 24 Dec 2018 06:39 AM PST I have been selling my services for very cheap in order to build an awesome online portfolio and make a name for myself. Well, now I finally completed a portfolio that I like, and I still have a very hard time advertising and recruiting clients. I only get two or three clients a month (if that) and I still don't charge nearly what I feel I'm worth. What can I do to generate more revenue? [link] [comments] |

In theory does being the manufacturer (B2B) or material scale better? Posted: 24 Dec 2018 06:33 AM PST Does being the manufacturer of a finished good, a part the goes into product, or a material supplier in theory scale better? because you get uptick when the businesses you sell to sell more. And you benefit from their marketing? When you sell B2C you sell in a linear way. When you sell to businesses you get to have entities that can grow and multiply. Anyone sell B2B and can confirm this? Anyone sell their B2B and B2C and take a cut out of your competitors pocket? [link] [comments] |
