Thanks for being my Watercooler, /r/Accounting Posted: 24 Dec 2018 09:12 AM PST Dear /r/Accounting, It's Christmas Eve*, and I'm at the office. I work at a small firm (3 people). When I first started, if I'm being honest, I was really lonely. Then I discovered this subreddit, full of its glorious shit-posting, trolling, and faux-negativity towards all things accounting, and life got better. So Happy Christmas, and thanks /r/accounting for being a pretty solid alternative to the watercooler conversations I'm told other offices have. (Don't let it go to your heads. You're all still a bunch of black tar heroin addicts who need to seek help immediately.) *Edited, because accountants need to pay attention to detail. [link] [comments]

Starting Next Year- Recession? Posted: 24 Dec 2018 09:33 PM PST Hey everybody, I am set to start next year in Audit at the B4 and this has got me wondering. Has anybody had an offer withdrawn due to the economy nose-diving? I was in middle school in 08-09 so I don't really know how bad things truly got, For those of you starting in 09, how were things then and how are you doing now? Thanks in advance. Posted: 24 Dec 2018 08:22 PM PST To all current, inactive, candidates, and hopeful CPA's. Here's to a merry ol' Christmas to a clockwork lifestyle baby. Not all heroes wear capes and not all losers are noncpa's. We come in all different shapes and sizes but we all balance the accounts at the end of the day. Whether you're B4 hotshop or a bottom barrel xyz, we all came into this game for that mystical 3 letters next to our names so that we get that paper, make our mommy & daddy proud, prove your exes wrong about you, or to spite and reach further than our bosses. Whether you're a staff, manager, internal or external auditor, tax advisor, or partner, we out here stacking our direct deposits and roths and mutuals and what not. Whether you in the game for 10 years, 20 years, or 40 more, we ain't no industry, we professionals in a profession. We took that ethics exam. No one shaking us. We did it by the book. K, i'm lost now. I don't know how yall celebrating but I'm drunkie af. Merry farking christmas. edit: this excludes any dismembered cpa's due to constructive fraud (recklessness) or scienter (intent). Yall didn't study REG hard enough. [link] [comments]
Saw something interesting in Aquaman ... Posted: 24 Dec 2018 01:46 PM PST In the credits, I randomly saw a line for costume accountant. That has to be a thankless inventory job: 1 - sequin monstrosity costume 2 - sequin monstrosity costume 3... But random thought ... studios do hang on to costumes for potential reuse. At what point do they become inventoriable? Chance of Aquaman 2? Chance of Justice League 2? Chance of general re-use? Must the be the strange life of a costume accountant - your costume has one too many sequins so it goes to expense :). lol. Happy Holidays to everybody. Hopefully a relaxing post before busy season begins next week. [link] [comments]
Posted: 24 Dec 2018 05:58 PM PST Currently working at a large mid-tier firm and we have member firms in the UK, so there is a possibility of secondment. However, I've heard that it is easier for auditors to get secondment compared to accountants since the audit process is similar but tax legislation can be very different. Has any fellow Aussie accountants gone through this process? [link] [comments]

Confrontational Nature of Auditing Posted: 24 Dec 2018 12:09 PM PST To all you audit people out there, do you think that auditing is inherently adversarial and confrontational? Do your clients look at you like the enemies, as if you were the IRS's henchmen? Have you ever been in situations where you were meeting with your clients, and you clients were noncooperative and even combative, and were at a point where just a few more wrong looks and wrong words exchanged between the two sides would have lead to a fist fight? Trouble maker relative wants to be a client at the firm I work at. What do Posted: 24 Dec 2018 11:58 AM PST My sister in law. While she hasn't been clinically evaluated, she is very high on the narcissism spectrum. And I suspect that if she was evaluated, she'd be diagnosed with narcissistic personality disorder. She is the kind of person to try to get involved with her family's work life so that she can fuck it up for them. Create some kind of drama with the business so that it can be hell for you, and maybe even affect your name in the field. She just dropped on me that she wants my firm to do my taxes. [Insert Office Steve Carell screaming "NO. GOD. NO GOD PLEASE NO."] I looked it up, unless i'm misunderstanding, and it seems that it is not a conflict of interest for her to do business with us because they'd just get another accountant to do the work for her, and I don't get any kind of gain from her finances. I want to talk to my boss about this. We're a tiny firm. A total of 9 people work there. I want to let him know that she has a habit of slandering companies that make her mad (always because she didn't get her way in something). And although I don't want to tell him this specifically, I know she wants to be able to try to ruin my job security through smear campaigns if she gets mad at me. But I am aware that to warn my boss of this would probably make me look really catty and gossipy. I'm new. I'm not all that great at my job yet. I started last March and I am still learning so many ropes. What would you do? Just deal with it and hope she doesn't have nefarious plans? Say something to the boss? Ugh..... Thanks for your time and input. I'm sorry that this is such a stupid seeming post but this is serious with this girl. Batshit crazy doesn't even begin to cover it. And she's good looking with a sickly sweet, charming kind of personality when she wants something. One meeting with her and my boss would think "What was Bethany talking about? Her SIL is the nicest young woman i've ever met!" [link] [comments]

Is it too late to begin applying for big 4? Posted: 24 Dec 2018 05:18 PM PST I graduate in May with a MBA in Accounting and I haven't found a job lined up after graduation yet. I did some research and it seems like the hiring season for each Fall season occurs the previous Fall season. Unfortunately I had other circumstances and things to take care of so I didn't have time last September/October so I'm wondering if I should look for something else before I go for my 2 years at Big 4 if its too late. Posted: 24 Dec 2018 12:47 PM PST I'm graduating this summer with my BA in Public Relations. I want to become an accountant but never knew exactly until recently. I've explored going to get my masters in accounting or MBA. My question is what is the best course of action. I think receiving another BS in Accounting and then going from there would be easier but not sure... Thoughts? [link] [comments]
For all of you that passed the CPA exams I have a question Posted: 24 Dec 2018 04:09 PM PST What kind of grades did you get in your accounting/business classes, I am mostly a B average student for my accounting/business classes and I want to know how I would do on the exams [link] [comments]

Large Company High Pay or Cannabis Industry Lower Pay? Posted: 24 Dec 2018 10:29 AM PST 27/Male/Bay Area/No CPA I quit my cushy job in FinTech during mid December. I've worked in industry and Big 4 (Deloitte). Graduated with a degree in Econ & Acct in 2014. During this transition I've come across 9 job offer, 3 of which I've ranked as top. 1) Global Company - Private - 50+ entities - I would be taking care of all the intercompany allocations - Pay is $135K plus 10% bonus contingent on my performance paid out quarterly - 300 shares of equity 2) Tech Startup - Private - 1 Entity - I would be a generalist and do GL accounting plus learn ASC 606, I would have a staff accountant report to me - Pay is $128K, no bonus - 2,250 shares of equity 3) Cannabis Startup that provides a delivery platform - connects dispensary with end consumer - learn ASC 606, I would have a staff accountant under me and would manage/build out the CBD portion of this business - Pay is $120K w/ $5K sign on, no bonus - 2,000 shares of equity. These are all very good options with pros and cons to each. It's obvious the 1st option is most lucrative from cash POV but 3rd option is most lucrative from new industry/learning POV. I'm thinking of taking the 3rd option and learning more about the cannabis industry so that i can open up a dispensary in the future. The cannabis company doesn't have any flower inventory, it's simply the middle man between the dispensary and the consumer and now just opened up a CBD part of the business for states where cannabis is not legal. Anyone in the cannabis industry have any advice as far as feasibility to pick up enough knowledge in order to actually open up a dispensary? Any accountants who can provide insight, pros/cons into the above options? Thank you in advance! Edit: #2 is an ediscovery platform very close to profitability. I would be taking the company from Xero to NetSuite (have taken 1 company from Quickbooks to NetSuite already). They are currently operating on both systems so it would be messy [link] [comments]
