    r/Stocks Fundamentals Friday Nov 30, 2018

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 09:06 AM PST

Feel free to ask questions or talk about (not argue against) fundamentals such as tools, terms, and other important aspects of the investing world. But before you do see the following:

    Important/Basic Terms:

    • Market Cap - The total market value of a public company's outstanding shares. It can be found by multiplying the total number of outstanding shares by the price of a single share. For example, a company with 1,000 outstanding shares each priced at $5 a share would have a market cap of $5,000. Market cap is extremely important and should be used when valuing/researching a company instead of individual share price. See here for the difference between large, small, and micro cap stocks.

    • Shares Outstanding - The total number of shares held by all shareholders vs shares float which are shares available to trade.

    • Volume - Volume is how active a particular company is over a period of time in terms of trading; in other words, the number of shares that are being traded. Typically, you want to look for companies with high volume to avoid issues with liquidity and other reasons. However, if volume is much higher than the average volume in a given period, you may see wilder swings (good or bad) and volatility.

    • Dividend - A scheduled payout from a company. Dividends are used to reward investors for investing in a company. They can be paid monthly, quarterly, yearly, or on a one-time special basis. Dividends are often issued by mature companies but also companies with limited growth, REITs, and struggling companies trying to attract investors or keep current ones happy. Dividends can be great, especially for income investors, but it's important to note that they can limit growth and aren't tax efficient (you're forced to pay taxes on dividends vs just holding) when held outside a tax advantaged account. Never invest in a company solely for its dividend.

    • EPS - The amount of profit allocated to a share of common stock. This can be found by taking Net Income - Preferred Dividends/Weighted Average of Common Shares. EPS is very important in determining how successful a company is performing and where it stands in terms of profitability.

    • P/E Ratio - Stock price divided by EPS. High P/E typically indicates expectations of high growth. This is why we see companies like Amazon with relatively high P/E's. Low P/E's may indicate a company is pretty mature and that limited growth is expected. There are also formulas for trailing P/E and forward P/E.

    • EPS Q/Q - A way of measuring a company's growth rate by taking this quarter's EPS and comparing it to last years EPS for the same quarter. EPS Q/Q of 20% tells us that the stock is earning 20% more than last year while factoring in their stock price.

    • PEG - PEG ratio is used to determine the value of a stock while taking into account growth of a company's earnings. The formula for PEG ratio is a little more complex than some of the other ones we have here, but click here if you're interested.

    • Sales Q/Q - Sales is another word for revenue and doesn't factor in stock price like EPS, but is an important metric for growth, especially when a new stock is in the early stages of expansion and probably has a net loss. A net loss means a stock won't have a P/E or PEG hence sales q/q's importance.

    • Return on Assets (ROA) - Net Income/Total Assets. This formula provides a clearer picture of how well a company is managing its assets to generate earnings and ultimately profitability. Some companies will have low ROA by the nature of their business such as bank stocks.

    • Return on Equity (ROE) - Net Income/Shareholders Equity. This formula can be used to get a better idea of future growth, how debt is impacting things, and how the company compares to its peers in the industry.

    • BETA - The measure of volatility and risk of a company compared to the market as a whole. A stock with a BETA of 1 means that it will likely act similar and correspond with the market. A stock with a BETA lower than 1 typically means less volatility is expected while a stock with a BETA higher than 1 means it could potentially more volatile. These things aren't set in stone and companies can react and perform quite differently than what their BETA would initially indicate.

    • SMA - The moving average of a company's stock price over a specific period of time. SMA can be used over different periods of time and can help paint a better picture of where a company stands in terms of performance over the past few weeks/months; 50 and 200 days are common periods of time to use with SMA.

Each of these formulas/tools are important and unique in their own way. However, no single one can be used to successfully invest alone by just itself. Instead, think of them as only a piece of a big puzzle that make up something bigger. In addition to knowing what these terms mean, it's also important to understand why they look the way they do as they can sometimes be misleading without further understanding. For a example, if dividends are 3 and EPS is a negative number, then a company might need to issue debt to keep up with the dividend payments which is bad for long term growth.

    The importance of quarterly earnings:

At the end of every quarter, public companies will make sure everything is more or less up to date and correct; they will have their accounting teams put together things like a balance sheet and income statement for shareholders. They will often provide a run down of how things went in the most recent quarter and what kind of outlook/guidance they see moving forward. These run downs are typically under highlights in the earnings release and are always mentioned in the live conference call which investors can listen in.

Don't be overwhelmed by all the terms here, it's a lot of info to take in and understand. Instead, look them over and take advantage of some of the great websites available out there for learning this stuff. For some great sites/tools you can use to learn about these terms, follow the market or specific companies, and aid in your investing check out the following links:

If you have a basic question, for example "what is EBITDA," then google "investopedia EBITDA" and click the Investopedia article on it; do this for everything until you have a more in depth question or just want to share what you learned.

Buffett bought large amounts of Apple. Now it's gone way down. Is Apple still a good buy?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 08:47 AM PST

Back in May when BH (Berkshire Hathaway) had their annual meeting, Buffett, Munger and Gates all said Apple was a strong stock and BH wished they could buy more. Is that still the same sentiment with this stock?

S&P 500: equal weight is better than cap weighted

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 05:35 AM PST

    Graph of this issue: https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DtLfBz2WsAAdXZE.jpg

Timing is everything. You'd be basking in glory today if you launched a mutual fund 10 years ago that concentrated on mid-cap stocks because they outperformed. You'd be a dunce if you did the same thing in the 1990s because they lagged. Those are the facts behind the recent outperformance of the S&P 500 Equal Weight Index (S&P 500 EWI) and the funds that follow it.

An equal weighted (EW) stock index gives the same weight to each stock in an index. The smallest companies are given equal weight to the largest companies. The S&P 500 Equal Weight Index (S&P 500 EWI) is the equal-weight version of the S&P 500. It has the same constituents as the capitalization weighted S&P 500, but each company is allocated a fixed weight of 0.2 percent quarterly.

Taking a cap-weighted index and turning it into an equal-weighted index will change the average market capitalization of securities held in a fund. The average market capitalization of the S&P 500 is about $58 billion while the average market capitalization of S&P 500 EWI is only $16 billion. Nearly 50 percent of the holdings in the S&P 500 are categorized as mid-cap stocks according to Morningstar.com.

Do you personally prefer to invest in the normal S&P 500? Or do you prefer the equal weight S&P 500 index?

With small caps being expensive, in terms of PE, do you think the equal weight index will continue to outperform over the next 10 years?

Why is Coca cola stock still going up?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 11:34 AM PST

Revenue decline, earnings decline and book value declines and the stock still has gone up.

Their payout ratio has been rising and free cash flow has been flat since 2008 and was higher a few years ago.

But still their stock is slowly rising why?

What free apps &/or websites are out there for charts and earnings reports?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 12:59 PM PST

I can find charts pretty easily, at least up to 5 years. What I'm looking for is lifetime charts and a minimum 5 years of earnings/dividends/income reports all in one place. Are there any free sites or apps that offer this? Google & app searches for this have become pretty time consuming.

As I gain experience and build my skill level I will look into some paid services with more info included.

    TCEHY and BABA a buy?

Trump is scheduled to speak with Chinese leader Xi Jingping later today. Hopefully, they will reach an agreement ending (or helping) our trade war. Would it be wise to invest in these? Are there any other Chinese/American stocks that will strongly benefit?

    Automated vehicle ETF

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 07:34 AM PST

Hey guys, I'm looking to diversify my portfolio a little bit and add some speculative stock/ETF (max 10% of my portfolio). I think automated vehicles will definitely be around in the next 10-15 years as amazon, google, and uber are all very interested and this new technology will change the world as we know it. My question to you all is what ETF do you like for automated vehicles and why? I was debating between 3; KARS, EKAR, and DRIV. KARS has just over $30 million in assets, EKAR = $2.4 million, and DRIV = $19million. (If that matters). Some others i found were CARZ and ARKQ. Thank you for your help!

Why is market cap drastically different across different apps?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 11:27 AM PST

When I check ANGI's market cap on bloomberg (https://www.bloomberg.com/quote/ANGI:US), it says it's 8.772B.

When I check ANGI's market cap on google (https://www.google.com/search?q=NASDAQ:ANGI), it says it's 1.32B.

Bloomberg states that there are ~75M outstanding shares. At $17.36 per share, I would reason the market cap is 1.32B.

Why is bloomberg saying market cap is 8.772B? Yahoo Finance's app also is stating a market cap of 8.61B.

Update. I sold and came out even. Can always reinvest in it if the tides change.

The Stars Group - A Good Play on An Emerging Market?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 05:59 AM PST

    Hi Everyone,

I see that people have posted about this company in the past, but not recently. To me, they are starting to look very tempting; they went up to ~$50 a share with the news of the emerging U.S sports betting market, then tanked to ~$30's, and now sit at ~$25.

The main concern is debt, however the consensus seems to be that this company has a winning management team, a viable business model, and assuming cash flows as expected, they could be an awesome long-term value play.

What do you all think? I just can't help but feel that $25 is a great entry point - this company has a decent track record of increasing profits quarter after quarter, and I don't think that will end anytime soon (on the contrary, I think it will take off!)

I'm fairly new to the game so I'm not sure if I'm interpreting it correctly but am I wrong to interpret the data; that either today -Tuesday we will see a drop? I'm nervous to place a put, but my gut it telling me to go for it 😥 I also noticed they increased their dividends that pay off on Jan. So will that make investors hold on to this. Stock?

Best time frame to look for chart patterns?

    Posted: 29 Nov 2018 06:15 PM PST

When looking for the cup/saucer with handle and other base patterns, is it best to use weekly or monthly time frames?

As an example, I was looking at a stocks 5 yr chart with a weekly frequency. I seen the cup with handle pattern clear as day. When I switched it to a monthly frequency, it obviously changed (disappeared). Other times, I see them on monthly freq. and they disappear on weekly.

Very probably by my opinion today this stock to add around 1%. You must decide when to buy and when to sell today to make some money. The holding interval may be 1-3hours, depend of the current market situation. We will see.

    Thinking about shorting Google

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 11:18 AM PST

Should I? Looks like the employees have organized another protest and walk-out. And these aren't small. These are coordinated events around the world in all of Google's offices. Google might also stop producing a search engine for the chinese because employees have threatened to quit if they do.

It seems like the inmates are running the asylum.

Anybody see all those algo candles on the SPY today?

The first one was at 10:30. I hope you were able to stay your ground...it dumped immediately. Constant fake-outs in this market....wet 'n wild.
