What are some good books on the basics of what you need to know to run a small business? Posted: 03 Oct 2018 04:04 PM PDT I'm considering starting a small business but I want to do some reading first on basic stuff I'll need to know, money and time management, and basic tax stuff. I am the GM of a restaurant in a city downtown and my boss just asked me if I wanted to buy it. Posted: 03 Oct 2018 11:04 AM PDT I posted this in /personalfinance and it was removed. Thought this would be a better spot. I am using a throwaway because I am active on my other account and many IRL friends know me. I cannot talk about this to anyone because most of my friends work with me. If they know that my boss (M) is trying to sell it it may cause them to be afraid for their jobs and act erratically. So M owns 4 restaurants in downtown. They are all super unique. M started them with their partner, but divorced in a pretty messy situation years ago. My boss has been trying to keep up with all of them, but wants total control, which is understandable when it is your money being thrown around. So it is hard to make any actual changes to the place because I am always having to go through M to do anything. M never wants to do anything new and different. We have had a lot of new places open up and sales have been lower in the last few weeks than last year, but overall compared to January-August of last year we are up 150k. I just took the position a year ago and credit most of the sales to me. We have a lot of off site large caterings that we have started to do and the old GM was rather lazy and said no to people because they did not want to do it. Two days ago M asked me if I wanted to buy it. I was asked because M asked their financial adviser about selling and they said that you should always ask in the company first before looking outward. I have always wanted my own restaurant, but thought that it would be too far fetched for me to actually ever own one. I am in school part time to finish my bachelors degree while working for M. I have bad credit from my own bad divorce. I just never thought I would be able to own my own place. We talked to someone yesterday that helps people get loans that normally would not be able to get them and she is very confident that she can help me if I want to do it. The question I have is how do I come to the answer of do I do this? Is there a person I can show P&Ls to that will guide me into making a decision? I feel very alone in this. M is asking 150k if that matters. I do have P&Ls until August. If there is a better subreddit to post in please let me know. More information to add Ms goal is to sell all the restaurants but one. The first one they started. Their heart was in that restaurant and their partner at the time wanted to expand not M. M is super stressed out and feels spread too thin. If I want advice about this irl can I just ask an accountant some advice? Can I talk to a financial advisor for just an hour? Thank you! [edit] sorry I am on mobile so bad formatting. Posted: 03 Oct 2018 11:30 PM PDT Hey y'all, So my dad has asked me to help out with his consulting business on the oil & gas industry in Alberta, Canada, where he primarily focuses on managing shutdowns & turnarounds. He's wanting me to help revamp his online presence and with business analyst type stuff, so I'm just wondering if anyone had any helpful links to share? Right now I've just started to look at Lynda for resources through the library. I should also add that I'm located on Australia, and that I do have a business degree, but I've never really had to deal with online bits like SEO or anything for data analysis as it has always been outside of my scope. Thanks so much in advance!! [link] [comments] |
European cut/sew DTG/Sub manufacturing? Posted: 04 Oct 2018 03:42 AM PDT Hi there, Hopefully this is okay to post. So I just wanted to start by saying I have been searching and I am not a start up. I've been trading for two years in a niche market with prints featuring my own art. I don't expect anyone to give up their manufacturer, I'm more hoping perhaps there are some small scale ones on here. Anyway, I've been importing from China and have seriously had it. Import tax is a bomb, shipping times suck and the ones I've been working with have started great but start missing deadlines and this greatly upsets my customers. I'm tired of not being able to put out what I want to when I want to. Another thing is that I'm looking for custom bodysuits to be stitched from custom printed fabric so standard t-shirt companies just don't work for me. Based in the UK by the way, would love to hear any related success stories too! (It will give me at least a little hope!) Thanks for any advice! - S [link] [comments] |

Help with a small profitable tree service Posted: 03 Oct 2018 07:14 PM PDT Hi everyone I'm looking for advice on what the next step should be for my business. I own a tree service which consists of me and one other full time employee and 1-2 either part time employee or contractor. I keep them and myself busy 3 days a week in the field. while I bid for more work two more days. I'm booked out a month on work with allot more referrals coming in. I don't know how to take the next step and fully trust a crew to do the work without me there but I need to figure something out to give myself time to do the back end paper work stuff and all the customer call back stuff. Any suggestions? [link] [comments] |
Popular Food Product & How to Increase Productivity Posted: 03 Oct 2018 08:36 PM PDT We run a small latin market. We also sell prepared food products. Our most popular prepared product is also our best selling product. Unfortunately, we can never make enough. We sometimes run out hours after we open. Sometimes we don't produce any at all because the people making the product need a break. The product is from Latin America made by hand by family members. Think Tortilla with lots of delicious stuff inside, let's call it TortillaX. Making TortillaX takes time. First you need to prepare the beef/chicken/pork, the sauces, the other ingredients and then all these products go into this Tortilla. It takes a person with experienced hands to make this correctly or else the dish tastes like a raw thick tortilla with a bunch of things thrown in. I can't help but think there must be a better way. Some chinese machinery that would allow me to automate some of the steps. We tried increasing the price to reduce demand to give us some breathing room. It made no difference, it did not stop demane. Our TortillaX is already 20% more expensive than all our competitors, so I'm not sure how much more I can increase it. I've considered hiring tortillaX experts to help us out but they're extremely hard to find. I'm at a loss. I hate to see customers come in and be disappointed. Worst of all, I hate to see lost potential revenue. Any ideas would be appreciated? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Oct 2018 08:26 PM PDT Hello, I currently work at a small business as a salesman who also does all my own ordering, inventory, sales, and most of the loading, training, etc on what I sell. I have been there over 6 years now and do well with my sales and many of my customers trust and like me. I mostly like working there but two other employees are very toxic and cause me great levels of stress at times and they have working against my best interest on a regular basis. If it wasnt foe them I would be happy. They have maybe 5-7 years before they retire. I have thought that is not much time to wait them out but other times I feel like I cant stand another day with them. Should I grow some balls and just do my own thing or put up with their shit for awhile more and be better odf later? I am good at sales but I dont want to go into a pile of debt getting setup with a big operation and if I do go out on my own I dont want to count on others so I would prefer to be solo. Opening a retail operation, questions? Posted: 03 Oct 2018 08:15 PM PDT What critical questions do you need to ask a retailer before franchising their store. What extra protocols should one take before franchising a store. How much should a franchise fee be and what should it be based off of, the current franchise we're talking about has about 6 stores. For example,my dad and I are thinking of opening a franchise of a certain good/product that is fairly new but expected to go from 2b to 20b in the next year. Thank you for any information. I am very new to this. Any articles or good reads would be helpful too. Thanks again. [link] [comments] |
How do you setup your small business bank accounts? Posted: 03 Oct 2018 07:47 PM PDT For the longest time, I simply had a checking account (no fee) and a cash-rewards credit card from one bank. It's gotten to the point where I have staff who manage A/R, A/P, payroll etc and there's a lot of cash flowing in and out of my checking account each month. Although I trust my staff, I would like to limit my exposure in case someone decides to steal that money. I was thinking of creating multiple accounts, a checking account to pay bills, an account for payroll, and an account to store any free cash. That last account wouldn't be "connected" to any 3rd party services and would be locked down such that I would be the only one who has access to it. The idea would be that by creating separate accounts, I would limit the exposure of each one. Not sure if this is too complicated, or not sophisticated enough. Any thoughts or feedback on this scheme would be appreciated! [link] [comments] |
Small business inquiry (Restaurant) Posted: 03 Oct 2018 07:28 PM PDT Not sure where to post this. The wife (and I?) we're looking to get advice on opening a small restaurant from scratch. What kind of government grant are available? Do banks typically give loans out that would cover the construction costs, or would I need to come up with most of the funds. I don't have a business proposal at this point, just looking for any insights to pass on to my lovely. I'm in Canada. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Oct 2018 06:38 PM PDT I have a business where I may be texting, emailing, and calling up to five clients simultaneously in less than a minute increments at a time and am feeling frazzled trying to keep track. Suggestions? [link] [comments] |
Do I hire a self employed person? Posted: 03 Oct 2018 05:23 AM PDT Relatively new to this so bear with me... I'm a dog walker looking to expand my business in many different directions (geographically being one of them). Out right employing somebody wouldn't make sense in my situation because of the costs and management of it all. My alternative solution is to allow somebody to use my name, branding and marketing, but stopping shirt of franchising. The set up would cost the person I'm "hiring" (although I'm sure that's not the right term) £100 monthly, and after they exceed £300, I get an extra £20 for every £100 they make. So they earn £500, I get £140. Is there a name for this and what system would be best for ensuring I get paid. Tldr: want to kind of franchise, but not exactly, best way to do this? Posted: 03 Oct 2018 06:06 PM PDT I'd prefer to do a start up where I work from doing a lot of the work by myself, to then outsourcing all the work, marketing, accounting, manufacturing, logistics. Are most companies run like this? And is there resources on running a business on this type of mindset to be less on the battle ground and command different departments? [link] [comments] |
How big of a problem is merchandising for the success of a sales & marketing strategy? Posted: 03 Oct 2018 05:30 PM PDT Hi- I've been a lurker in /r/smallbusiness for a while, but usually post in /r/entrepreneur. It recently occurred to me that most of the businesses in that subreddit are purely online (I'm not sure why it took so long), and I though I might have better luck having a conversation here. My business have always been connected to the physical world, so its difficult to get informed feedback in there. My experience with physical goods and retail is that often times a well planned sales and marketing strategy can be ruined do to poor merchandising at retail. It seems its unclear where this responsibility lies for this work (brand, retailer, or distributor) which leads to poor quality of service as everyone in the supply chain. We've launched several promotions only to have them fail before they could get started due to poor retail execution. Do others have a similar experience? How have you overcome it? Are there any resources you would recommend to help? Should I be budgeting these costs into our product, or should others be picking up the tab? Is merchandising a real problem for brands/retailers, or am I being blinded by my own personal experiences? I'm in the food and beverage industry if that's helpful. Thank you for any constructive feedback! [link] [comments] |
Looking for marketing strategies for online women's clothing boutique Posted: 03 Oct 2018 11:32 AM PDT I launched my online women's clothing boutique last week. To date, I've had over 600 site visitors and 1 sale. 70% off the site traffic comes from my social media platforms and the other 30% comes from direct searches. I am consistent with my social media postings. I have not run any paid ad campaigns. I'm looking for advice on how to market my boutique. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Oct 2018 05:15 PM PDT I just lost a salesperson and need to replace him. Last time I used indeed, but the price of it has gone up a LOT since then. I had tried Zip Recruiter last time for a month with not one quality candidate. Any advice or tips on the best place to try and find a salesperson? [link] [comments] |
How much should I charge tattoo artists to rent a space at my shop? Posted: 03 Oct 2018 04:11 PM PDT I'm working on opening a tattoo shop in southern California and I was hoping I could get a couple pieces of advice. I'm personally not a tattoo artist, but I have great respect for the trade and the highly talented artists that make up the community. I have a degree in business and I'm hoping to partner with an experienced tattoo artist to open a shop. I understand that a lot of artists wouldn't want to work for someone who doesn't tattoo, but I'm hoping that my respect for the art and wellbeing of the artists will transcend that stigma. I'm not in this to make easy money. I honestly want to make a career out of something I'm passionate about while also creating a space for artists to make a living that they deserve, without having the shop rip them off with low commission rates. I've worked for companies with greedy executives and bosses and since I'm dedicated to starting my own business, I honestly want nothing but the best I could offer my employees and their families. I was putting together some financials for a potential shop, and I was just wondering if the subcontractor agreement I had in mind is a fair offer for artists. I was thinking of charging artists $3400 a month to rent studio space, and I'll cover all supplies including hygienic materials, drafting supplies, tubes, tips, grips, needles, ink...pretty much everything except the tattoo machine and power supply. I came up with this number after diligently going over all costs of business, shop rent, potential revenue from each artist, while keeping a comfortable income for myself and the artists in mind as well. My goal is to make the studio as hospitable and comfortable for artists as possible and to allow the artists to make a better living at my shop than at a shop that'll only offer 40, 50 or 60% commission to their artists. I was also thinking of all the profit from shop merchandise can be completely split between the artists as a bonus. I just wanted to see if this sounds like an attractive offer to a tattoo artist themselves. If this isn't, what kind of offer would sound best to an artist? I'm committed to putting every ounce of work into this in order to make a high quality, conscientious tattoo parlor become a reality. Any advice is really really appreciated. Thanks!! CRM suggestions for a small consulting firm Posted: 03 Oct 2018 11:46 AM PDT Hi There, I'm starting in BD with a small consulting firm. They use active collab for project management. They have also been using it as a CRM of sorts, in that they separate opportunities by stage (lead, pre-bid, negotiation, etc). They do not have any detailed client info there or activity history - making it very difficult for someone new to understand the client/project history. In my last job I used a customized Salesforce product. But I don't want to overwhelm them with another tool that's too complex or expensive. I do think we need something better to capture clients details and show a pipeline. Any suggestions based on past experience? Should also note I don't see any obvious CRM plug-ins to activecollab. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Oct 2018 03:22 PM PDT Right now our company is a sole prop. Would I need to have separate business accounts? Would I need to do double the bookkeeping? Double everything? I know I can use the same equipment, but how does that work with taxes? [link] [comments] |
