    Significant Insider Trading Activity (Last 7 Days)

    Posted: 01 Oct 2018 07:40 AM PDT

    This is a list of the top 20 companies that experienced the largest change in insider shares in the last seven (7) days. The SEC defines an insider as any officer, director or 10% shareholder. It is not illegal for these people to buy or sell their own shares. In fact, since most of them get paid in stock options, it is expected. However, it is illegal for them to trade on inside information that has not been made public. So for example if there are drug trial results that are bad and not public, insiders cannot dump shares. That said, many people have observed that insiders - in general - seem to have a good track record at timing their purchases. All trades that are marked as part of a 10b5 plan are NOT excluded from this report.

    Significant Activist Hedge Fund Activity (Last 7 Days)

    Posted: 01 Oct 2018 07:41 AM PDT

    These are the latest Schedule 13D forms filed by activist investors in the last 7 days. Activist investors are investors that make an investment with the intention of influencing management in some way. There is evidence that following activist investors into investments can generate excess returns. Schedule 13G forms, in contrast, are filed by significant investors with no intention of influencing management (such as Index funds).

    There is always a lot of interest in insider trades, but what a lot of people probably don't realize is that hedge fund activity is probably more predictive of future returns than insider activity. The reason is that hedge funds (a) have large research budgets, and (b) have a choice where to put their money. In contract, insiders have no choice where to put their money, but only when to time their transactions.

    Sector Rotation Provides S&P 500’s Resilience

    Posted: 01 Oct 2018 02:38 PM PDT

    Key Points

    • Sector year-to-date performance is ugly. Only three sectors have performed better than the S&P 500.
    • Taken at face value, the relative performances of the sector ETFs could mean trouble ahead.
    • However, a deeper analysis shows this may not be the case.

    Bloomberg Interview

    There was an interesting interview on Bloomberg this past Friday. Tom Lee, often characterized as a Perma-Bull, stated the last quarter is likely to be good for stocks. He believes that hedge funds and other asset managers will need to make up for poor performance this year, and they will need to chase returns. This will push stocks up, and be a positive for the markets as a whole. However, there's a caveat.

    When the markets and sectors are in their present condition, they tend to perform poorly the next year. He said the last six of seven times this happened, the markets fell double digits the following year.

    Year-to-Date Performance

    Lee was looking at the year-to-date (YTD) performances of the individual sectors. The S&P 500 has returned 8.69% over the last three quarters. The combination of tax cuts and high consumer sentiment has helped bring record earnings to U.S. companies, and has propelled the index to all-new highs as recent as September 21.

    Given this strong performance by the main index, we would like to see that most of the individual sectors follow suit. If they do, it means investors believe most of the economy is growing, and companies are expected to continue growing.

    However, if we see the majority of sectors are underperforming it could signal cautious investors, or that only a select few segments of the economy are expected to grow.

    As we can see in the chart above, only three sectors have performed stronger than the S&P 500. In fact, half of the sectors have negative returns for the year. Does this prove the stock market is weakening?

    What Does the Technical Analysis Say?

    After analyzing the individual sectors, the market does not look like it is an as much trouble as the YTD numbers might suggest. You can download the analysis here.

    We use ratio charts to understand the relative performance of the sectors against the S&P 500. When the line moves up, it tells us the sector is performing better than the index. If the line moves down, the index is out-performing the sector.

    The top three sectors: technology, consumer discretionary, and health care, have done well to support the index. However, only technology and discretionary stocks have consistently pulled the market up for the year. Health care has only performed well since it bottomed in May. The ETF has grown by 20% since.

    Utilities and real estate have kept pace with the S&P 500 since the correction in January/February. Their YTD under-performance is mostly due to the correction, which began in December 2017 for them. This means that there are a total of 5 sectors supporting the index. However, it should be noted that utilities and real estate look like they are going to face some selling pressure over the short-term.

    In addition, while the YTD returns look bad, the sectors themselves do not. Most of the cyclical sectors are still in uptrends, with the outlier being financials. The defensive sectors on the other hand look okay, which is a good sign for stocks. Of course, the outlier in the defensive sectors is health care, which looks great.

    Conclusion

    The stock market is behaving much differently this year, than compared to 2017. Of course, 2017 was historical and there may never be years like it again.

    The correction in the beginning of 2018 had set the tone for the sectors. Some sectors fell hard, and are still trying to recover. A couple sectors fell, but quickly came back.

    What we have seen this year is how diversification and sector rotation can benefit the S&P 500. When the industrials, materials, and financials fell, it was the support of the defensive sectors, such as staples and utilities, that kept the index from falling just as hard.

    Then, when the index bottomed, it was the performance of utilities, staples, and real estate that helped bring the index back to its all-time highs. Suddenly, industrials and health care came back, and with the continued performance from technology and discretionary stocks, it helped the S&P 500 rise to new highs once again.

    Sector rotation is a part of the S&P 500, and is one of the key reasons why it is important to properly diversify a portfolio. Relative YTD performances tell one story, but they don't paint the whole picture.

    For now, investors will want to watch for any signs of a top in the sector charts. If we start to see the sectors turn down, then it will be a problem for the S&P 500.

    Historical Evidence - Even with Markets at All-Time Highs Why it’s Not Too Late to Invest and How To

    Posted: 01 Oct 2018 05:20 PM PDT

    The stock market is at an all-time high and "experts" are predicting a crash or correction. Truth is there have been 1,200 all-time highs and there will be many more. This video destroys all the fears about investing in the stock market and how to invest when it's at all-time highs. https://youtu.be/VFFeRH9Jnz0 I wish more people would have seen this video in 2014 when the S&P 500 hit an "all-time" of 2,000 and experts were saying it was time to sell. The people that listened and sold lost 40% of gains to date. Or in 2017 when the Dow hit the big 20,000 and stock experts said it's hit the peak. Well those that sold, lost big with the Dow passing 25,000 and on its way to 30,000. All this evidence and people are still waiting for a crash. PSA: don't listen to the experts. Keep investing by dollar cost averaging and ride the Market up.

    Is it possible that the tesla short sellers took the opportunity of tesla stock price going down last Thursday?

    How To Make Money In Stocks - William O’Neil

    Posted: 01 Oct 2018 11:16 AM PDT

    https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=66XFXqh_5N4

    The CAN SLIM model for selecting stocks was developed by William J. O'Neil, founder and chairman of Investor's Business Daily. The system is described in his best-selling book, "How to Make Money in Stocks: A Winning System in Good Times and Bad" – now in its fourth edition. The goal of the strategy is to identify companies with strong fundamentals and buy them as they emerge from periods of price consolidation, before they make major price advances.

    The Elements of CAN SLIM

    The seven letters in the CAN SLIM acronym stand for the key traits O'Neil found that stocks display just before they make their biggest price gains. CAN SLIM combines both quantitative and qualitative stock assessment into one easy to remember mnemonic device, it is described below.

    C = Current Quarterly Earnings

    Substantial earnings-per-share growth can attract the large institutional players – something that can fuel big price moves. According to CAN SLIM, investors should look for companies with a minimum quarterly EPS growth of 25% in the most recent quarter – though gains of 50% to 100% are even more attractive. Of course, you want those gains to be sustainable, so the company should also have at least 20% sales growth in the most recent quarter and a minimum 17% return on equity.

    A = Annual Earnings Growth

    While good quarterly earnings are important, a company should also boast strong annual earnings growth. This can help confirm that the company doesn't have any underlying problems, such as falling demand for its products, deteriorating profit margins or negative industry trends. CAN SLIM investors look for an annual EPS growth rate of at least 25% to 50% in each of the previous three to five years. Remember there is no good reason to hold a company's stock if its earnings are declining. STOCKS FOLLOW EARNINGS!

    C + A = QUANTITATIVE The first two parts of the CAN SLIM system – strong quarterly and annual earnings – are logical steps employing quantitative analysis.

    N = New Product or Service

    The third trait that CAN SLIM investors look for is something new in the company – whether that's a new product, service, CEO or high stock price, or an innovative industry trend that benefits the company in some way. Wall Street is always on the prowl for the next best thing, whether that's an entrepreneurial company disrupting an industry or an established company that reinvents itself by pivoting to new products. Something new can equate to profits for years to come, and sometimes decades.

    Domino's Pizza (DPZ) A perfect example of how newness can create success can be seen in Domino's Pizza (DPZ). After gaining a reputation during the early 2000s as the worst pizza chain, Domino's went through a major shift in late 2009. The company came out and blatantly acknowledged that its pizza was awful, and it was committed to upgrading the product. On top of rebranding, the company also looked to upgrade its mobile delivery system. With the implementation of these changes, Domino's has seen its share price climb over 3300% since 2009. This is just one of many compelling examples of companies that – through doing or acquiring something new – achieved great things and rewarded their shareholders along the way.

    S = Supply and Demand

    The law of supply and demand governs all market activities: strong demand for a limited supply of available shares will drive price up, and an oversupply of shares coupled with weak demand will drive price down. CAN SLIM investors watch for sharp price increases backed by spikes in trading volume. These events indicate demand – especially from mutual fund managers and other institutional investors – that can lead to even bigger price moves.

    L = Leader or Laggard

    In any industry, there are companies that lead and provide big gains to shareholders, and companies that lag and deliver gains that are at best mediocre. The idea is to buy leaders and avoid laggards; CAN SLIM investors look at the relative price strength of a stock to differentiate between the two. A stock's relative price strength ranges from one to 99; a rank of 75, for example, means the company has outperformed 75% of the stocks in its market group over a particular period of time. CAN SLIM investors look for stocks that have relative price strengths of at least 70 – though stocks in the 80 to 90 range are generally more likely to be the major gainers.

    I = Institutional Sponsorship

    This trait refers to whether the stock is owned by banks, mutual funds, pension funds and other institutional investors. Such ownership can be viewed as positive confirmation of a potential winner. Professional investors have teams of analysts who research thousands of potential investments. When one of them starts buying a stock you're considering, it can increase demand for the stock – and potentially trigger rising share prices. CAN SLIM investors should focus on stocks that have at least three to 10 institutional owners.

    M = Market Direction

    The final trait in the CAN SLIM model is market direction. When picking stocks, it's always important to recognize whether you are in a bull or bear market. CAN SLIM investors believe you should invest with the market, as opposed to against it. The theory here is that, according to CAN SLIM, three out of four stocks move in the same direction as the general market – as measured by the major indices (the NASDAQ Composite, the S&P 500 and the DJIA). If you buy a stock when the market is in an uptrend, the theory goes, you have a 75% chance of being right; conversely, you have a 75% chance of being wrong if you buy when the market is in a downtrend.

    Noob Question: Why is my PUTs performance not relating to the drop stock price?

    https://imgur.com/a/kiEwmid You can see the above link I have PUTs on $SHLD with a strike price of $2. Why is my return line graph not increasing as the stock goes down? Shouldn't they directly linked? Thanks for any help understanding this.

    Mock trading for beginners

    Posted: 01 Oct 2018 10:54 AM PDT

    I'm looking into stock trading and I wanted to do some mock trading for a year to see if I can manage any returns before pushing real money into the pile. What good mock trading platforms does anyone suggest? I'm using Fidelity for my Roth IRA, something with a UI along that interface would be helpful.

    A Question About Robinhood’s Credibility

    Posted: 30 Sep 2018 10:34 PM PDT

    Hi everyone 👋🏻,

    I'm new to the community, and I was hoping I could ask if anyone had any experience trading on Robinhood? If yes, what can you say about your experience, good or bad, and about how viable an option it would be to invest there.

    Thanks!
