How do you see beyond the money?

    Posted: 01 Oct 2018 09:21 PM PDT

I started my own photo/video agency after years of being in production as a freelancer/employee. I'm new to having my own business and I want to do it right so I'm looking for an olive branch so I can get my mind set straight.

Every day I wake up I think how my business needs this or that so that it can make money, or manage money. I think expenses, unnecessary expenses, and how it takes away from making me more money. I'm thinking I can pay more for better talent, but that will eat into my margins. I'm all about money and I don't want to be.

How do you see beyond the money? I keep hearing "if you are in this for money, you will not be happy." Ok. But what should I be in this for? What is everyone else trying to achieve? What should I aim for, if not making money?

    Please help.

Title says it all. Would anyone be interested? Only fee would be hosting, and .com domain would be included. If you have both that's great, if not we can assist you with getting it.

Only requirement would be a review of the website and service afterwards.

Have you really listed out why hiring is so terrible? I did...

    Any cafe owners out there?

    Posted: 02 Oct 2018 02:00 AM PDT

I'm preparing to open a cafe in my city and am curious what struggles I should expect. I've been shopping out equipment too and note the huge varieties so I'm curious if anyone can help guide me in selection. All of this on top of how nervous I am about hiring.

    Any conversations welcome.

What is my next career step in life to make $500k yearly?

    Posted: 01 Oct 2018 06:30 AM PDT

If you are a millionaire and/or make >$200k yearly, I'd love to hear your opinion.

    • I started making money with my own websites when I was 13.
    • I started my own company when I was 15, sold when I was 22. (Never was >$100k in size)
    • I started working around 5 years ago and grew from a $40k salary to $250k as a consultant.

My salary has been stable for the last 24 months and I am starting to worry I am peaking and that it's hard to make more than $250k yearly here as a IT consultant.

Am I kidding myself and is there still growth as an IT consultant or should I look to pivot again? What would be a logical next step for me?

Does anyone here have experience opening their own bubble tea shop?

    Posted: 01 Oct 2018 01:36 PM PDT

If you do, do you mind if I contact you to ask some questions? I recently left my career to try and open my own bubble tea shop. I've done my fair share of research, but I just wanted to speak with someone that has gone through the same path! Thanks!

Business software for Plumbing Supply Company

    Posted: 01 Oct 2018 11:26 PM PDT

I am looking for a new business software for my plumbing supply company. We're operating from a brick and mortar store with 8 employees and over 15,000 skus. My budget for the software is in the range of $5000(one time payment). We're looking for an on-premise type of software because my internet is slow and unreliable. All the major internet service provider do not service my area

Right now we are using QuickBooks premier and some draw backs are -only 5 users are able to be log in at the same time -inventory detail is weak -price level is limited -searching for an item is difficult -searching for a customer and their purchase history is horrible -etc...

I've looked around for a while now and research softwares on softwareadvice.com and capterra.com with no luck in finding a new software

I've considered sage50 but its no good. The software slows down incredibly when there's more than 10,000 SKUs. My computer is up to date, ssd, i7, 8gb ram

I'm looking for an all in software, with strong accounting and inventory management. I'm basically looking for an upgraded QuickBooks that doesn't break the bank. Please help!

Which app or SaaS do you use to consolidate all of your KPIs from E-Commerce / POS and marketing (email, social) platforms?

What's it called when you fund/activate based on enrollment?

    Posted: 01 Oct 2018 05:31 PM PDT

I have an idea but I'm trying to do research on it...I want people to sign up for something, but the event only happens if enough people sign up. If a threshold is reached, their card is charged. If not enough people sign up, no charge. What is this called? I can't seem to Google the right things to read up on it.

    Recommendations for heat sealer

    Posted: 01 Oct 2018 09:58 AM PDT

I'm starting a leather goods business and I want to seal my products before shipping to avoid water damage. Does anyone have any recommendations for a good heat sealer and watertight bags? I make small leather goods up to satchels and weekender bags so the mouth of the machine will need to be relatively large and able to accept multiple sizes of plastic bags.

    Thanks in advance!

    Starting Herbal Extract Company

    Posted: 01 Oct 2018 03:38 PM PDT

I'm just playing around with the idea of starting a small herbal extract company and was wondering if someone could help explain the process you would have to go through to do so. What kind of licenses and legal hoops would there be? Could you produce and distribute from your home? Any tips would be appreciated!

    Brainstorming Business Names!

    Posted: 01 Oct 2018 03:26 PM PDT

I'm totally stuck on a name for my new business. To start off with I will be selling hand crafted soaps made with all natural ingredients (no dyes, pigments, fragrance oil, etc.), and I will be expanding into lip balms, men's beard products, shave soaps, lotions, and scrubs so I'm not sure if I want "soap" in the name since I will be more than just soaps (but it seems to go with some names I've come up with). I live in the rural Midwest in a large ag community, love to travel, the outdoors, hiking, my dogs if that helps with any ideas that are a little less generic. I don't mind puns or fun names, but want to keep it clean (no pun intended there) as I will be targeting families, bonus if it reflects my products being all natural and my love of the outdoors/nature and travel.

I've came up with a few that I will list below (note, I haven't done deep digging to see if any are in use yet); if one jumps out at you please let me know or if you have any other ideas I'd love to hear them! Thanks!

    Moonlit Soap Co.

    Midnight Ridge Bath Co.

    Stay Wild Bath & Body

    Wanderlust Bath Co.

    The Worn Bath

    Mountain Bath Co.

    Huckleberry Bath & Body

    Naturally Wild Bath Co.

    Suds N Roses

    Suds in The Tub

    Suds Me Up

    The Loved Suds

    Buttercup Bath Co.

    Swirls & Twirls

    Buff Naked Soaps

    Heavenly Peaches Bath Co.

    How would you market this?

    Posted: 01 Oct 2018 03:15 PM PDT

    Hello!

I'm an entrepreneur working on a business to help people pass College Board CLEP exams so they can earn college credit for gen. eds., save thousands in tuition, and hundreds of hours of class time.

I've passed 13 CLEP exams and my plan is to create study guides to help others do the same. I've presold a few through my very tiny email list which sort of grew magically (I'm fairly active on a CLEP forum and my blog name is in my forum signature which leads to at least a few subscribers a week - and those subscribers are quite engaged).

I'm just really confused where to go about marketing it.

170,000 CLEP exams are taken each year and there are a few main prep resources used: Instantcert, REA, Speedyprep, and Modern States - all of which I believe I have a competitive advantage over (being super immersed in the market myself and knowing exactly what the target market would want).

    Any ideas?

How to manage multiple suppliers for same product.

    Posted: 01 Oct 2018 02:30 PM PDT

How do I quickly compare suppliers cost when a sale is made, so I know from who place the order so they can ship to the client without opening a bunch of excel files!?

Lets say I have 20,000 items and some have 3, 4 suppliers with different prices and shipping costs.

The suppliers send me their csv.

All the products are on ebay and amazon already.

I been searching Supply manager software but most assume you can pay large amounts of money a month. But we are open to any suggestion that can be managed online. I was thinking something with wordpress plugins but haven't found it yet.

Backstory. A friend just brought an online business that was already up and running. He does not know how to simplify the process and am trying to help.

Is it inconceivable to sell a service business in a small city?

    Posted: 01 Oct 2018 01:56 PM PDT

I love my business and it's doing well. I find myself fantasizing about the "number" at which I would sell, but is it just a fantasy? How often does this really happen? How does one go about looking for buyers?

How much is too much Facebook advertising?

    Posted: 01 Oct 2018 01:48 PM PDT

I have a local business so I always promote my posts either within the region or promote them to the people who like my page and their friends. Do you have a limit to how much you do this? I don't want to fill their newsfeed too much and have people unlike the page. Anyone ever see this happening with their ads? How much is your monthly ad budget on Facebook for local/regional advertising?

Just hoping to get some ideas of how others promote posts.

Going self employed.. worth the jump?

    Posted: 01 Oct 2018 12:54 PM PDT

    Hi guys,

Apologies if this is the wrong thread. I've tried to find start up sub reddits and couldn't seem to find alot. I work in sales, and have a background of business development, account management and self marketing. Recently my friend had quit his job to pursue his full time business (was making more money through his business and thought with an extra 8 hours a day he'd do even better).

He buys and sells sofas. Ex display, cancelled orders etc etc. Brand new sofas. He buys and sells and nearly always doubles his money on each sofa. He has a storage unit which has increased 4 times in the last 2 months. The thing is he has had no outside money, and no help from anyone. All advertising he does is free advertising and gets enough from it. It's just been a slow burner. He's my best mate and we used to work together in a job a while ago. He told me the other day that he really really needs someone else onboard to project this thing. He also needs more investment. Any money he gets goes back into stock. Hence the increase in storage. So cashflow for him is a major issue.

He wants to expand, we've talked about it. More vans, more employees, a showroom, expanding product range etc etc. I've asked if he'd take anyone else on. He doesn't want to at the moment. He's always trusted me and I've trusted him and he wants me to buy into the business and work alongside him. At the moment the finer details haven't been written out.

For me, the idea of working my own hours excites me. The idea of a project that is growing is exiting. The idea of working alongside my best mate, boosting a business together is exciting. The thought of being self employed scares me. The thought of the unknown scares me. The thought of a slow month and little money scares me.

The idea I feel is great and I do believe with investment and me and another body (we would hire someone else off my capital) could definitely help grow this. I've looked into this sales book, I've seen the interest he receives off each sofa, I've dropped sofas off, picked them up. It's all great. But it does scare me. I'm in a comfortable position, earning pretty good money doing what I do, but I don't feel almost slightly fulfilled, infact quite the opposite.

Basically, what I'm asking is that buy the sounds of the above, would I be making the right decision to jump into self employment? Is it a bad idea to go into business with your friend? If any of you have done the same as me and taken the plunge, is it something that you would recommend?

Like I said, apologies if this is the wrong subreddit - But I'm really stuck here and don't have many people to talk to in that respect. Any help appreciated.

Can I get a business loans to fund a specific product line?

    Posted: 01 Oct 2018 11:56 AM PDT

I've never taken out a loan for my business but I may need to for a project next year. I do my business on the side but the work is getting a bit much to handle and will be outsourcing a good amount of my work. I will also be scaling up the quantities of my products 10 to 20 times more than what I normally do. I usually fund my products with cash on hand or credit cards and then pay everything off as I make sales. For this new product I don't want to put that much money on credit cards and don't have enough on hand. Using these fake-ish numbers below, I'm trying to figure out if there is a small business type of loan I could get and how much I should ask for.

    So the fake-ish numbers are:

    Total Projected Revenue $140k

    Materials $30k

    Labor $20k

    Marketing $10k

    R&D $5k

    Profit $75k

In this scenario I'm not looking for a loan to fund my whole business but just this run of products. So assuming I qualified, would I get a loan to cover everything but the Profit (so $65k) or is this handled in a different way?

My main concern is that I want to start incorporating traditional marketing into my approach (instead of word of mouth) and I know I need to include the cost for those things much earlier in the process.

    Fleet Insurance

    Posted: 01 Oct 2018 10:47 AM PDT

    Hi UK based question:

Has anyone got any recommendations for fleet insurance? We have about 6 vehicles (only 1 x van) and looking to consolidate to 1 insurance policy, if we can. its getting too burdensome to have x6 and all different rules for drivers - some over 21, some over 25, some only x5 employees out of 10 allowed to drive etc etc

    Thanks in advance!
