    This is it, folks!

    Posted: 31 Oct 2018 11:42 AM PDT

Today is my last day of employment, and I'm packing it in. 42 and ~1.25M in assets. If need be, I have a valuable skillset and multiple companies that want me, and I can command well into six figures, but I'm not materialistic and doubt there'll be the need.

Please let me know whether I should or should not go fuck myself.

Daily FI discussion thread - October 31, 2018

    Posted: 31 Oct 2018 04:08 AM PDT

Please use this thread to have discussions which you don't feel warrant a new post to the sub. While the Rules for posting questions on the basics of personal finance/investing topics are relaxed a little bit here, the rules against memes/spam/self-promotion/excessive rudeness/politics still apply!

Have a look at the FAQ for this subreddit before posting to see if your question is frequently asked.

Since this post does tend to get busy, consider sorting the comments by "new" (instead of "best" or "top") to see the newest posts.

    Weekly Self-Promotion Thread - October 31, 2018

    Posted: 31 Oct 2018 04:08 AM PDT

Self-promotion (ie posting about projects/businesses that you operate and can profit from) is typically a practice that is discouraged in /r/financialindependence, and these posts are removed through moderation. This is a thread where those rules do not apply. However, please do not post referral links in this thread.

Use this thread to talk about your blog, talk about your business, ask for feedback, etc. If the self-promotion starts to leak outside of this thread, we will once again return to a time where 100% of self-promotion posts are banned. Please use this space wisely.

Link-only posts will be removed. Put some effort into it.

TLDR demographics, behavior, and spending habits can be determined, stocks have been bought for years on end regardless of price and are now going to be sold regardless of price. Millennial generation isn't buying them because they are too broke.

Long ago in a land far away stock were bought and sold on their value more than as a result of a generation retiring.

    Budget Benchmarking

    Posted: 31 Oct 2018 12:05 PM PDT

Hi all. I'm a 37 yo, married with two kids. I'm on a slow but steady path to FIRE in the next 5-10 years. In reading recent posts, I've been impressed at how far others have been able to get their monthly spending down. Although our savings rate is about 30%, I feel like this pales in comparison to most folks on here.

I'm interested in digging in a little deeper and wondering if anyone has seen any resources for benchmarking different budget/spending categories for those on a FIRE path. What are people spending on food, entertainment, etc. per month? Any websites or blogs that have studied this? With two kids, it's more difficult but it'd be nice to know what to shoot for.

    Thanks.

Having trouble calculating a FIRE number for me and my SO

    Posted: 31 Oct 2018 11:14 AM PDT

I have been lurking on this sub for a few months now and am all on board for RE. Like some on here, I wish that I had been as committed to reaching FIRE a bit earlier in life, some early decisions on my career I probably would have done differently if I had them to do over again. I am currently 35 and my SO is 32. The plan we have right now is to both retire around the same time, which is 55. My SO will be able to start collecting her full pension at 55 (NY State Teacher). I am not sure what the best route to take for determining what our FIRE number should be. I can't seem to find a FIRE calculator that will account for a couple and the pension that she will receive. Should we be calculating our numbers individually and then adding them together? Any advice you guys could provide would be appreciated.

What is it called when you reach the point that your savings are self-sustaining? Flashpoint?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2018 11:41 AM PDT

I.e. your return rate is equal or greater than your withdrawal rate, which means your wealth hit a "flashpoint." It's self-sustaining.

I'm sure there's a name for this, idk what it is.

HSAs for future health care costs

    Posted: 30 Oct 2018 09:39 PM PDT

Given that future health care costs are such a concern in the US, why don't we talk about HSAs as the vehicle to address those future costs more often? Or do we and I just haven't seen it?

I recently started maxing out mine, and should have about $250k there in 20 years (assuming 6% returns) that should cover the cost of health insurance premiums until Medicare kicks in. I totally understand a HDHP isn't for everyone, but if it works, this is a fantastic option for investment.
