How does one become a tax god? Posted: 01 Sep 2018 02:24 PM PDT There is a tax partner at the firm I work for who seems to know everything about everything tax. What are the steps to be like that? Is it just memorization of tax laws, similar to school? Or do some people just have "it"? I'm not the smartest person. I graduated from school with a 3.2 and passed my cpa with high 70's and low 80's. I'm really nothing special but I really want to excel and be amazing at this. [link] [comments]

Is leaving a job due to moving and having kids in the future a good reason to focus on exams Posted: 01 Sep 2018 04:25 PM PDT Is leaving a job (accounting assistant) due to moving and having kids in the future a good reason to focus on exams and a few other accounting-related projects before kids are on the way rather than rushing to the next job or would that be particularly dangerous to a career? Posted: 01 Sep 2018 02:01 PM PDT What's your approach for the last week? I'm finding it very hard to write day 2 cases any more. I tried today but after reading and planning I just couldn't motivate myself to actually write it (I wrote all capstone day 2 cases as per time restrictions but the last few densmore cases I couldn't find the will power to do it). I was only off for two weeks earlier in the month (only time I could get off) and wrote a lot of cases (all the densmore ones plus the extra densmore ones and capstone 2 cases). I have no problem writing the shorter day 3 cases but can't find the motivation to dedicate an entire 5 hours at once to do a day 2 case. Should I just focus on reviewing my debreif notes for the next week and rewriting a few day 3s and hope for the best haha? I'm working all next week and then Monday and partially Tuesday. I also need to work on my procedures which is part of the plant this week to spend an evening reviewing the assertions and going through scenarios on accounts to test and how to test them. I have no problem picking out the ao's (only had one na throughout capstone 2 and that was for that day 2 case with the enabling competency). I was planning on doing k med since I haven't done it tomorrow but might just read and plan it instead. In the modules I never actually wrote cases while I was studying just planned and answered in point form on my plan. What are your guys approaches for the last week? Anyone else lacking the motivation to write the longer cases? [link] [comments]
Posted: 01 Sep 2018 10:02 AM PDT I am currently in the process of job searching for an accounting and finance type job. I completed a summer internship at a very big industry in my area and now searching. One company I interviewed for was really impressed by my Volunteer Income Tax Assistant Certification. That was a completely free cert from the IRS. [link] [comments]
Talk to me about internal audit Posted: 01 Sep 2018 08:16 AM PDT I'm starting a new job as internal audit and compliance manager and leaving my public accounting firm. I've never worked in internal audit before. Who wants to share experiences with internal audit/compliance, moving from public to internal audit, or working in banking? What does your day to day look like, how busy do you keep yourself? If you report directly to the supervisory committee, how does that go? [link] [comments]
Posted: 01 Sep 2018 09:10 PM PDT Hello, I tried asking this question from colleagues and searching the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR) website. I have completed the CPA exam, ethics, and one year work requirements for Illinois. I am just about to apply for the first time for my CPA license in Illinois. 2018 is a renewal year for licenses. Dos it make sense for me to apply for my license now, receive it, and possibly have to renew it, all within the same month? (September 30, 2018) Or does it take a while for the application to be proccessed and I am overthinking it? Thanks, [link] [comments]

Second Year Accounting Student Who Needs Your Help Posted: 01 Sep 2018 11:35 AM PDT Alright guys, here it goes! I'm in Canada and is going to a university in Ontario. I'm currently going into my second year of Accounting. My work experience so far has been two years at Wal-Mart, prior to starting University( I pay my own tuition,). This summer I decided to stay at home to grieve a close childhood friend of mine, who fell 16 storeys down from a building and died and take care of my mental health. During this summer, I learned and honed my Excel VBA macros, Pivot tables, and SQL skills. I looked into tech jobs, and it seems that you don't need a degree to get a job in tech, and I want to solidify my post grad employment chances, so I'm going to either learn digital marketing or web development during the upcoming school year. I was wondering what is the best route to get into a 40hr/week private accounting job. Also what tech skills do you recommend me to learn on top of the skills I have learned and will learn? TLDR; -Going to 2nd year of Accounting GPA 3.7 -Spent the entire summer grieving over a childhood friend who fell 16 storeys down a building, and taking care of my mental health -During the summer, I've learned VBA, SQL, Excel -Any tech skills recommended for Accounting? (looking to get into analytics, big data kind of stuff) -Best way to get to private sector 40hr/week? Audit or tax etc.... Also the government have a CPA program where you work for the government while they help you get your CPA. Can I go from government to private? -Want to prepare to get a tech job after grad in case I can't find an accounting job. Which field is self taught friendly? Regards [link] [comments]
What's your B4 time off policy for days between Christmas and new year? Posted: 01 Sep 2018 07:43 AM PDT Incoming first year, have heard conflicting things. Some people said the office closes that whole week, others say that's not true. Is it technically given off but they still expect you to work? [link] [comments]
Job prospects for an international student [US] [CPA] Posted: 01 Sep 2018 12:00 PM PDT Hello everyone, I am an international candidate, got my master's done and currently working at an Indian branch of a Big-4 for about an year. Earlier I was planning to pursue the Canadian CPA (got done with the transcript assessment recently), now a lot of people have suggested me that the American CPA is a better option and it's cost effective compared to the Canadian CPA. I am looking for some insights towards this because it has become really confusing for me to choose between the two. I understand that CPA is not a magic wand to get you a job, but what's the job outlook in US if I as an international student go for it? I also intend to pursue a master's program in accounting or fintech alongwith the CPA. Any help is appreciated, thank you. [link] [comments]

First time in my life that I’ve been laid off... Posted: 01 Sep 2018 07:21 AM PDT I got let go from my job at a smallish company yesterday because of 'restructuring': they decided they didn't need me anymore even though the CEO had repeatedly reassured me that I wasn't going to lose my job. I was with that company for 5 months and was told I'd be working directly with the CFO & I'd gain accounting experience. All I did was journal entries, process a couple AP checks each week and had just taken over bank reconciliations. Basically doing a fraction of the volume of work I did at my previous job. I'm not surprised at what happened or upset - I was already looking at applying for other jobs - but now I'm just not sure what to do. Job experience: I have a BA in accounting w/ 2 years experience in AP/AR/Bank recons/GL from a previous job plus a lot of banking experience. I just don't know where to go from here... I was hoping that this job would give me experience to use in a future job, but now I'm not sure I'm really qualified or actually have enough experience to just jump into an accounting job at a new company. (Ps -I'm not looking to become a CPA) Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated! EDIT: removed unnecessary information/wording :) [link] [comments] |
