I'm not going to make payroll tomorrow and I'm scared to death. Any advice?

    Posted: 01 Aug 2018 05:47 PM PDT

Hey small business community. I need some help. I have been helping run my parents business for the last year and a half. They are typical owners, totally checked out of the day to day. I came on to do the financial side of things (I'm a former CPA which in no way makes me a bookkeeper) and quickly discovered the host of issues within the company. They were in a BAD down swing with sales, operations were a total mess, accounting systems were wacked, employee time theft, no HR department for 70 employees, etc etc etc... How the business came to this point is a long story, and not my problem at hand.

Every time payroll comes around it's been a cash flow struggle but I've found a way to get everyone paid. This is the first time I'm coming up severely short and I feel like I'm at a loss. My folks are encouraging me to lie to the staff and tell them the payroll agency made an error. That doesn't feel right to me. I want to tell them the truth, that we are having cash flow problems and that I need to pay them a day or two late, but I'm concerned they will quit because they will feel like their jobs aren't secure.

    What should I do?

Thanks for your time. This is all very shameful for me to admit, I'm feeling drenched in failure right now.

Customer purposely destroys my product and wants a full refund? What should I do?

    Posted: 01 Aug 2018 02:45 PM PDT

Hello, I did a vinyl banner in CHROME vinyl.

I warned the customer that chrome will fade and peel if constantly exposed to the sun.

Low and behold he did expose it to the sun for long hours and days.

I offer to redo it for him but he does not want it redone, he just wants a full refund.

He admitted that he's not in the best financial position and is using the refund money for gas.

    What should I do?

Want to consolidate patented assets of my invention into a LLC so a VC can purchase equity in the invention, best way of going about this?

    Posted: 02 Aug 2018 02:51 AM PDT

So i've got an invention i've been working on for a couple years. Originally filed a provisional patent application then filed a full patent application this year, yet to be granted. I have an interested investor who wants to buy 10% stake of my invention, though I've been pursuing this invention without going under a business-title or anything, just using my full name on the patent documents etc.

Would the best way for an investor to purchase the 10% stake just be me forming an LLC specifically for the invention, and somehow consolidating the assets of the patent under that new LLC, and then selling 10% of that LLC to the investor through a buy-sell agreement? Is it even possible to transfer the assets of my patented invention to a new LLC like that?

Edit: I am in Texas FWIW.

Starting new I.T business, however I have a problem.

    Posted: 01 Aug 2018 10:37 PM PDT

Hello fellow reddit, I have come here for assistance in setting up my business for success. I started an I.T company in March of this year with a partner. Long story short it was 50/50 we only had one client which was a medium sized company, about 10+ locations. We only got this client because my partners father is an executive in that company. (I don't even know if that's legal or if there's was a conflict of interest since his son was co-owner of the company) anyway, I noticed I was doing all the work while he chilled back in our office and did nothing nothing all day. So I ended the partnership, dissolved the company and re-registered it as mine.

Anyway, now I am back at square one. Since the last gig I had was pretty much handed to me. I have no idea how to tap into this market. I have my website, I have my google page. I have my business cards. However, my business sense is not all there. I don't know where to start to market myself adequately. So far I've been going door to door in plazas, business and financial centers. I have gotten call backs, but I cannot close a deal for the love of my life. Every reason I seem to get from these companies that have passed on me has been. "You're too young I'm (20 but I graduated university at 19, I started when I was still in high school) or the company is too new." I don't know if these are valid concerns other companies have, or are they are just bullshitting me?

In addition, I have worked in the I.T servicing field for 4 years and worked for nationally recognized companies. So I would think that it would help when they asked about myself. However, all I get are confused stares and the casual "we'll be in touch".

I don't know if I am doing anything wrong, or if this is something that happens to everyone when they start. I just need some guidance.

Advice on how to improve our job search site

    Posted: 01 Aug 2018 10:57 PM PDT

    Hey everyone!

I'm a college student in Cali, who recently joined up with a couple other students/recent grads from the US East coast. We're trying to start a site to better help friends, classmates and other people find jobs, specifically related to tech, marketing, and business.

Some of the people in our group have experience applying to more than 100 job postings before even getting an interview. In my experience, I remember being forced to spend hours at a time, just filling out a few apps, and barely getting any responses. We're hoping to help others so they don't need to go through that unnecessary hassle, by speeding up/simplifying applications with autofilled forms and jobs matched based on people's experience/interests.

    Link to our site: careerblitz.io

I'd really appreciate if you guys could check the site out and let me know what we can do to improve the site for people. I'll be honest, I'm not the head programmer or anything, but whatever improvements that you think we can make, I'll let the rest of the team know and we'll work on making those changes ASAP.

Thanks in advance for your help!

How important are web reviews to your small business?

    Posted: 01 Aug 2018 02:59 PM PDT

I'm trying to get a feel for how important web reviews really are to certain types of small businesses. Does your company offer a service that depends on repeat business (anything from a nail/hair salon to a car wash to a pizza place)? If so, how often do you check web reviews? Do you monitor them daily, weekly, or what? What things have you tried to do to build more positive reviews? What's worked for you?

I really appreciate any feedback. Thanks!

    Reaching out to suppliers

    Posted: 01 Aug 2018 08:32 PM PDT

I own a flooring installation company, surprisingly doing better than I wouldve thought (getting jobs through kijiji/facebook/referrals and only dealing with installation), but I want more growth.

I've been developing a website, nothing crazy just building the online presence. I want to have a hand in the supply of material as well, which I think would involve getting in touch with a supplier that can offer me discounts, advertising for them on my site. What do I offer in return though as other than that and the promise of clientele (which no one can guarantee for certain) ?

Owning your own building vs renting one

I'd love to hear feed back on what it means to own your own real estate, and whether or not it's something I should invest in!

24 busting my balls saving. Have a business owner that wants to sell. What do I need to know?

    Posted: 01 Aug 2018 10:24 AM PDT

So I've saved up a substantial amount especially for my age. But it still is no ware near what I need to buy a business maybe like a third or fourth of a smaller business that earns like 50 to 70k annually With that being said I could buy a small part time income sized business.

I met a business owner actively seeking to sell his vending machine business. He lives on it full time and wants to retire. I mentioned that I just don't have the funds to buy it outright because of that full time income but I could buy it in chunks and role the profits and my current income to keep buying pieces of it over a course of 5 or 6 years to buy it in whole or however long it takes to buy all of it. I think I should be able to buy it all in that time I save about 40 a year live very very very frugal in the hood it sucks but it is the sacrifice I must take let me tell you I am sick of spegettios. What steps of due diligents do I need to take? How do I insure I am not getting screwed over in this. How do I convey politeness but a trust but verify mentality to him as to not offend him that I don't know him and have no reason to trust him that he isn't yanking my chains.(I find this very hard) Now I told him I would buy at a price that makes him happy within reason for both of us sense this is such an odd way to purchase a business and I really tryed to emphasize making him satisfied with this transaction so he feels like both of us won. So it will likely be a bit more expensive then just buying it all at once would be, I don't know if this is smart but I want to grow and expand and explode and own. I want to win the game. However if isn't at least semi reasonable I will walk away and my brokerage account will continue to suffice untill I can buy whole.

Now I have not seen profit and loss, I have not run the route with him. We will be going to lunch to discuss in more detail and I will be getting a lawyer as well to walk me through this properly. I've gotten burned in the past and really really really do not want that to happen it is not fun and I am trying to learn from those failures. But as of now untill we make this legal I will be counting it as hearsay. But the fact that he seems ok to work with me and have lunch over it means that there is a chance he is ok with me buying his routes chunk by chunk. And ok negotiating with me for my first business purchase.

Thank you for any advice in advance I am eternally greatful for it

Is "middleman cost" a relevant issue for your business?

    Posted: 01 Aug 2018 06:20 PM PDT

    Hi, guys!

I'm gathering feedback from small business owners and would like to know the following from you:

1-What % of your profits is cut by "middleman costs"? Would you say it impacts your business in a significant way?

2-In case you use e-commerce websites (Amazon, eBay, etc.), would a similar but free of charge platform represent a substantial advantage for you?

3-Would you be willing to accept cryptocurrencies as payment for your product/service if that meant increasing your profit?
    Thanks!

Should I get check deposited into my business or personal banking?

    Posted: 01 Aug 2018 08:33 AM PDT

Hi, I've been teaching computer programming at a community center and will be getting paid soon. I was asked to fill out a W2 in order to receive a check. What would have the most tax benefits: getting it deposited into my personal or business account? I have a small technology consulting company, an S-Corp to be exact. I've been driving everyday to work, can I get some type of tax write off for that? I'm really confused when it comes to this stuff.

Advice on getting our product into more retail stores

    Posted: 01 Aug 2018 06:11 PM PDT

Hi business people, Just seeking some advice on the best way to approach retail stores to sell our product.

I currently help my mother with her business, I basically do the tech/design side of things and she makes products amongst other things.

We currently have her products in a handful of small retail shops and they all sell incredibly well. All the stores we are in she has had a prior relationship with the owner, so getting products doesn't really take much.

I'm asking the best way to approach business that we don't personally know. I assume it's best for her to go in and introduce herself but what do owners want to know specifically that would spark their interest.

Happy to go into more detail if needed but any advice you guys have would be much appreciated.

    Thanks

Tips on Gaining Clients for Digital Billboard Advertising?

    Posted: 01 Aug 2018 05:56 PM PDT

    Hello everyone,

I am a long time lurker of this sub and finally decided to start a thread. We own a few local businesses and one we recently started is an outdoor digital billboard company. I am struggling to find clients to advertise on our billboard. It is located along the busiest street/highway in town (population of approx 500,000+). I have quickly learned that the competition is fierce in the business and being the little guy is a challenge. The problem I am running in to is all the national/large companies are already locked in by other marketing agencies (not a surprise). However gaining their attention is where the problem is. When contacting a company I am directed to the fact that these agencies already deal with the larger advertisers and won't even look at us in terms of advertising with us. Our pricing is unbeatable, the normal rate is $1,695 and we are offering it as low as $777 (less than half the normal rate) at times and unable to lock in potential clients. I am anxious to learn how to get our foot in the door and gain traction. Any tips/advice/insight would be appreciated.

How to Maintain the Momentum of Success

    Posted: 01 Aug 2018 03:14 PM PDT

Every person has achieved some degree of success at different points in their lives (no matter how small they may seem, and at any age). It wasn't until I was 17 that my confidence started to grow exponentially. Even then, I still was very insecure compared to how I am today.

I had many points in my life where I'd have major success, then a "downfall" soon after. I felt frustrated as I felt like every time I got "up", I'd fall right back down again. There were many times where I tried to be frugal and would still end up spending way more money than I expected. This was a cycle in my life that had to end and I knew it wasn't going to stop just by "saving money."

I concluded that I could solve this by making so much fucking money that I wouldn't have to think about spending ever again. On the path to success, you must not forget that the ups and downs are part of the ride and that there willbe a day where you won't ever have to worry about money again (along with many other things). If you want to achieve the light at the end of the tunnel, you must be willing to accept the good and the bad to get there. I've dealt with many people that I never wanted to talk to in order to get where I had to go. Since I've reached a certain point of success in my life, I now only deal with those that I want to work with. Of course the losers still try to remind me that they exist, but their ignorance doesn't affect me in the way it did before.

The moment you succeed at something, whether it's blowing up in the news or earning $500,000 in a week, pretend as though it didn't happen. When I say this, I'm not saying to actually believe it didn't happen, rather, work as though it didn't happen. This will allow you to put a healthy amount of pressure on yourself to exceed further than you could've ever imagined. When I had a great success in the past, I would sit around a bit and act as though I wouldn't have to work again, even though I knew I'd eventually have to. Now that I no longer lie to myself, I am aware that in order to never have to worry about money again, I must consistently stay hungry.

When you are always hungry, you will always do what it takes to eat. The reason I know that I'm going to become the youngest self-made billionaire, and the world's first trillionaire is because I am the most hungry entrepreneur in the world. My appetite is so large that I can, and will handle whatever it takes. This is also because I have a deeply rooted passion for what I do that is far beyond making money. It is not the money itself I care about, rather, what positive change I can bring with the money I earn. I've dealt with the worst case scenarios so many times that nothing bothers me anymore. I wouldn't say I'm "numb" to it, rather I don't let it insinuate doubt like it used to because I know that my path will bring so much good to the world that I do not have any other option but to succeed.

In order to maintain the momentum of success, you must continuously repeat the type of actions that bring further success. While this sounds obvious, we often find ourselves getting far too comfortable when we succeed instead of trying to bring something new to the table. With the recent press I've gotten, I know that I can't just repeat the same thing to get more press and that I need to come at it from a different angle. As some of you may know, I rap and with that, I plan to market myself in a completely alternative industry (music) that will help bring success to my main projects including Kelsey Coin.

Now even if my music endeavors don't succeed at this time (although I know they eventually will), I still have alternative ways to market myself to continuously remain on the press and accomplish my goals. No matter what "blockages" you encounter on your journey, the only way to push forward is by finding your way around them. You will notice that every "blockage" is actually life telling you that there is a better way regardless of whether it's aligned with your original plans. In 2014 I knew that I would become successful soon, but I did not know exactly how. Four years later, I look back at my life with a massive degree of appreciation, as the beautiful things that have occurred made me realize that life itself is greater than any dream.

I look at success as a boomerang that you throw out into the world and three years later it comes back to you along with a whole lot of rewards. Mohammud Hassan, Kelsey Coin's first buyer originally found about me because of Cazza. As you continue to maintain the momentum of success, you will find yourself having gone further than you originally thought, and in a way that you can only experience to truly understand how it feels.

Whats the best way to keep up with sales tax?

    Posted: 01 Aug 2018 09:04 AM PDT

Received a letter in the mail stating my sales tax return was overdue, funny thing is I never received an initial form. The past two years the cost has been negligible and have paid it myself (I haven't been charging my customers sales tax) I have to start charging for sales tax now however. What is the best way to keep that sorted so it doesn't get absorbed into my normal revenue? Do I start up a new bank account put it in there at the end of the month, or just keep track of it and treat it like an expense at the end of the year?

Locating supplier of bags or sacks?

I am searching for a supplier of large bags/sacks similar to the bags uses for bundles of wood or charcoal that can be ripped open at the top. I am looking to print a logo on these bags, and use them to bundle my product.

Searched for any suppliers in my region and turned up short, of course Alibaba has some for sale, but I thought I would check around here for any leads that are USA based in terms of quickly working with a supplier to order samples. I believe I may not be searching using the proper terminology, thanks for your time!
