I can call people from Facebook and I can receive my direct deposit through my cash App (Discussion)

    Posted: 06 Jul 2018 01:09 AM PDT

I feel like I am paying money to my bank everything month yet my cash app sends me a free card and I can use it anywhere with a pin and receive my direct deposit, I also pay for my phone bill to receive and send calls yet I can do all that on what's app for free. These industries are in for some disruption in my opinion.

Recently became a Co-Owner of a business and need some insight.

    Posted: 05 Jul 2018 03:51 PM PDT

    Warning, LONG

In December of 2017, I was approached by a colleague to purchase a store from him. He was sole owner of retro video game store in the south and had not long recently moved to open a 3rd location a few states away. I had shopped in his store for about 3 years and actually got to know him pretty well. Helped console him through his divorce and helped him deal with his anxiety issues. We had/have always had a good friendship. When he approached me in December, he advised me that since he had left the store he basically had let the employees there run it and at the time they had 5 employees in that location and would communicate via Facebook messages and calls to solidify trades and higher priced buy-ins. He also made me aware that it would be a great opportunity for someone that knows the video game business and if they could owner operate it then it would be great.

I asked for 2 years of tax returns and it seemed that the past 2 years they had did around 150-200k each year except obviously i couldn't verify 2017 at the time. I offered him 45k for the business and said that that would be a good number. I approached the bank and was declined but offered instead I buy into the business and become a co-owner to try and turn the store around for 20% equity stake in the company with 10k. He agreed to the number and in January I gave him $4k in cash to be applied to the expenses of the business to help with the buy-in and the other 6k I would work off as co-owner on an hourly basis. I came in the 2nd week of January to total disarray. Their inventory system was completely wrong. Initially claiming to have about 40k in On hand inventory, turned about to be around 10k. I immediately fired 3 of the employees to get rid of the dead weight.

He called me February 1st to let me know that rent was due and we would pay it late. I asked what he did with the 4k i gave him to catch up on the bills and he advised me that he had gave it to the "other" co owner who had initially invested in the store and owns 20% as well and that he took 1k himself to pay off loans he had taken out to support the business. In addition, they were paying payroll out of the cash til and were 2 weeks behind on that. Then he stated that he had sold the 1st location that had been opened and closed down the 3rd location and that he was managing a Spencer's for revenue. I asked then he add me as admin on the Facebook page so could promote and he says that he can't because his other business partner lives in another state and he is admin of that page and he seldom gets on Facebook.

So I reply, "Let me get this straight. You had 3 stores one in one state and you and this other guy open up this store so now theirs 3 owners of two stores. You sell that one, but don't remove him. Then you move to another state and sell that one. So now you're back to one but you sell me 20% in this store and theres 4 owners?"

His response is yeah but the other guy that runs the page doesn't really have any stake and he's not pushing anything because he technically owns the name but doesn't care because its not making any money.

So I work in the site for 6 months and begin turning it around. Fixing it's broken reputation. Start getting trades again. Sell a few things online. Get payroll caught up and start getting inventory back in. In April he tells me to take $500 for myself for profit sharing and May as well. The store had been mostly breaking even, but paying bills and starting to get on track. He then advised me he's moving back to the state that he's in so it'll just be me him and another guy running the place and he's going to renegotiate rent. He moves back 3 weeks ago. He then orders 2 high bar chairs that are really nice for the store and when I ask how much were these he says "ah don't worry about it". I deposit some cash in the atm for the store and realize the debit card he gave me I can't check the balance with or history of. It's just a deposit card. So I can only see what goes in and not what comes out. Ive repeatedly asked for paperwork on my ownership of the store and he tells me that the Facebook conversation would be sufficient.

I am not only pissed but I am lost here. I don't know what to do. You don't go into business with out paperwork and him withholding information and not telling me the full story does make me comfortable. Just a lot of it is fishy. I need advice guys.

    Should I get a Job?

    Posted: 05 Jul 2018 11:20 AM PDT

Ok so I started a small web digital agency. But I am making max $400 every other week. I'm too lazy to pick you up that damn phone. And want to work on online lead generation. But I realize that's going to be more slow. Meanwhile. Would it be a good idea to get a part time job to just get a little cash flow? My goals for the next six months are as follows.

Get money for tuition at college for spring semester Get money for books at college Buy a slightly sportier car than the Forester I drive. (It still beats civics so that's good) and gets alright mpg. Like an SI or Corolla XRS (I used to own a German car; love them but too much money right now). Help out with bills, pay gas, entertainment and so on.

I took a semester off to figure out my life and see if I could set up a stream of clients for web design to earn $400-$800 a week while I go to school(not interested in fully going out until after school) also my parents did not like this idea. I don't know why. I just don't want to work part time under someone else's schedule during school. It's hard finding a job to match your schedule. Plus some bosses are truly self entitled.

I just want to know if taking a semester off to figure out how I will pay for my stuff and set some financial goals now so I won't have to struggle in school (And focus on school; MBA in Computer science) was a good idea.

And during this time off and setting my business up. Should I get a part time to just make some extra secure income?

Also, if any of you need any digital services let me know. I have contracted a few people that have over 15 years of experience. So they will get you a great site for the price I offer. Or go with me as I am learning and get it discounted even more (I throw in a lot of functionality such as forms, JavaScript and live chat.) Here is my site http://www.joolji.us

I am on a learning curve. So I would appreciate thoughtful input. I've considered the cons and pros. And it just seems like the pros outweigh. But I want to see if anyone else had a similar experience and how it went for them? And what else should I do in my free time? To improve myself? I got 6 months of self improvement.

Any recommendations for a business appraisal company?

    Posted: 05 Jul 2018 06:58 AM PDT

My Dad died last year after a long battle with cancer and his estate is being held up in probate because the company he helped found is stalling on doing a business valuation. He owned 40% of a company in Nevada that did a little over $1M a year. After some false starts their CPA said she could do it back in May but still nothing. Looking for some recommendations to suggest to my Dad's business partner to see if we can get things going.
