How long do trade wars typically last?

    Posted: 31 May 2018 05:55 PM PDT

How long do trade wars historically last? Would we expect this current trade war volatility to last for months? Years? How do these things typically go? Will the final result usually be a positive for the stock market? It seems like whenever these tariffs get announced the stock market goes down.

I've been eyeing 3M for a long time and rarely see any correction greater than 10%. Now all 3 of these companies are at a ~ 20% lower than peak. What are your thoughts on these companies.

MSCI EM index partially adds 233 Chinese A shares in initial stage

Chinese shares to transform emerging market investing

The stocks will be added tonight at a 0.025 factor and only account for 0.39% of the index. Factor will double in September. Full inclusion would lead A shares to account for 18% of the index and China overall to account for up to 45%.

"I cannot say if [full inclusion] is going to be in 15, 10 years or five years."

While such a prospect appeals to some, it fills others with dread. Active fund managers can select which companies to invest in and which potential landmines to avoid. Passive investors have no choice but to own these stocks.

By objective measurable standards, A-shares are among the most highly-leveraged, volatile, worst governed and most heavily-diluted cohort of shares in any emerging market.

In spite of this, investors say A-shares represent one of the most compelling opportunities in global equities.

As the bulls see it, the opportunity is defined by a chance to back the future winners from China's rise to overtake the US as the world's largest economy in coming years, carried forward by a middle-class consumer boom, reforms to state-owned enterprises and technological advances in areas such as big data, automation and semiconductors.

And a look at some of the companies added: https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-05-31/the-200-plus-china-stocks-that-are-about-to-join-msci-s-indexes

Thoughts on Dollar Tree (DLTR) after poor Q1

    Posted: 31 May 2018 11:10 AM PDT

I'm fairly new to investing and I've been trying to learn about value investing. I bought 10% of my portfolio into Dollar Tree $DLTR because it looked good and at a discount, but today was a rude awakening into seeing how much I don't know. Any thoughts on this particular company or value investing in general? I was up 6% since January and now it's cut down to 2%.

    Thanks!

Now Micron stock is bargain sale season!

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 02:13 AM PDT

As I know yesterday mu stock price falling reason are morgan report and trade tariff issue. But I think it is not relate to micron directly. Any country did not adding tariffs to semiconductors yet. Some investor just was worried to things that never happened. So micron value still good and growth possibility is good. Today micron stock is bargain sale season! Enjoy today!

Question about finance internship/ post graduate program

    Posted: 31 May 2018 06:54 PM PDT

    Hello,

My question is about a summer internship/postgraduate program.. I'm not sure if the name of company is relevant, but they've been rated as a top company to intern for for the past couple years and they have a very well established name.

I will be aiming for a job in finance/financial planning as my career. However, It seems like their internship program is mostly aimed towards calling people and working off commission based sales getting their business.

Taking into consideration my career goals, does this seem like a reasonable type of internship? Does this seem like a usual internship? Does it make sense in my position?

Also, this will be for after I graduate college. This program gives you experience to transition into a full time job. What else should I possibly look for?

    Thanks

P.s. sorry if this isn't the best sub to post this in

    Precious Metal Investing

    Posted: 31 May 2018 06:19 AM PDT

I am not super optimistic about the outlook of precious metals, but I have a question on methods on investing in them. Most people seem to prefer ETFS for their liquidity when investing in precious metals, but wouldn't it be tax-advantaged to invest in physical metals so that when you sell the only hit you take is the 5% off the spot price? I realize that it can depend on price basis/how long you hold etc, but it seems like for the long term hold this would be the better option. Thoughts?

Operating Profit different in same report??

    Posted: 31 May 2018 02:10 PM PDT

In this year's annual report from N Brown Group (owner of Simply Be, Jacamo, JD Williams) on Page 12- Operating Profit is stated as £90.5m. Then on Page 52 under Operating Cash Flow, Operating Profit is stated as £33.6m. Why would these two numbers be different?

Looking on Hargreaves Lansdown they quote £33.6m but the P/E ratio they state seems to be using roughly £65m.

In forecasting Free Cash Flow, can we adjust for changes in working capital in operating cash flow?

    Posted: 31 May 2018 04:17 PM PDT

I've noticed that with many Operating Cash Flows, a significant portion of the cash flow is from changes in working capital. Since these are usually from 1 year to the next, does it make sense when doing FCF projections and also looking at past Operating Cash Flows, to adjust back for these changes in working capital as long as this is done consistently?
