Posted: 29 Jun 2018 07:20 AM PDT Nike on Thursday reported earnings and sales that topped analysts' expectations for the fiscal fourth quarter and announced a new, four-year $15 billion share repurchase program. The company said it saw a "return to growth in North America," which has lately been a sluggish spot for sales following a handful of retail bankruptcies. Revenues, meanwhile, were up double digits in international markets during the latest period, as Nike reaped the benefits of a handful of new product launches. Nike shares jumped nearly 12 percent to an all-time high on Friday following the news. The Oregon-based retailer reported net income of $1.1 billion, or 69 cents per share, for the quarter ended May 31, compared with $1 billion, or 60 cents a share, a year ago. Excluding one-time items, Nike earned 69 cents a share, 5 cents ahead of analysts' expectations, based on a Thomson Reuters survey. Total sales climbed 13 percent to $9.8 billion, again ahead of a forecast by the Street for $9.4 billion. Nike said its digital business alone was up 41 percent during the quarter. "Fueled by a complete digital transformation of our company end-to-end, this year set the foundation for NIKE's next wave of long-term, sustainable growth and profitability," CEO Mark Parker said in a statement. Part of Nike's latest strategy to win back sales in the U.S. includes selling more directly to consumers (thereby improving gross margins), making bigger investments in women's footwear and apparel, piloting a test with Amazon to rid the marketplace of counterfeit goods, and partnering with subscription service Stitch Fix. Nike has also been focused on adding experiences to stores and scaling new merchandise. A new React cushioning technology in its sneakers has been one big hit, for example. Nike's business — much like that of its peers in the athletic footwear and apparel industry — has been particularly stronger outside of North America of late. In areas such as Greater China, for example, there's still more room to grow. Retail bankruptcies in the U.S. (i.e., Sports Authority and Golfsmith) have been disruptive for companies such as Nike, Under Armour and Adidas. During the latest quarter, Nike said sales excluding currency changes climbed 3 percent in North America, 10 percent in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, 25 percent in Greater China, and 13 percent in Asia Pacific and Latin America. Footwear sales were up 8 percent overall, apparel sales climbed 15 percent, while equipment sales dipped 3 percent. "Our new innovation is winning with consumers, driving significant momentum in our international geographies," Parker said. Nike has been embroiled in a #MeToo moment, with several senior male employees leaving abruptly or set to leave Nike later this year, including brand President Trevor Edwards. Edwards was expected to be the next CEO in line after Parker finished his term, but he will now retire officially in August amid complaints about his poor workplace conduct. Parker has since apologized to Nike employees in an internal memo for allowing a corporate culture at Nike that excluded some workers and for failing to take complaints about workplace issues more seriously, sources familiar told The Wall Street Journal in May. Nike's chief of human resources, Monique Matheson, has also since said that Nike will make changes to ensure women and minorities are better represented in top jobs at the company. Wall Street hasn't been as rattled by the #MeToo developments at Nike. Some industry analysts have applauded Nike's efforts to conduct a sweeping internal review of personnel before the situation worsened. "We are encouraged that the Company is embracing change; both culturally and with progressive go to market strategies," Stifel analyst Jim Duffy said. "Against this backdrop, we expect the Company shows strong evidence of firming fundamentals that make more tangible capacity for the long-term objective high-single digit revenue growth and mid-teens EPS growth." Looking to the future, Nike is more upbeat about fiscal 2019, building on the latest momentum within the U.S. It hiked its sales outlook Thursday and now expects revenues to increase a high-single-digit percentage rate, up from a mid-to-high range. As of Thursday's market close, shares of Nike are up more than 34 percent so far this year, trading around $72 apiece. The company has a market capitalization of roughly $115.6 billion. Posted: 29 Jun 2018 12:05 PM PDT This market is volatile. Many stocks are on my list for long term holding, but looking at charts I see many ripe opportunities for collecting a quick 10%+ swing in a relatively short amount of time. Does anybody here invest like this? [link] [comments] |
Passive investment strategy (ETFs), with market timing using a trailing stop market order Posted: 30 Jun 2018 01:36 AM PDT Dear all, I am currently thinking about a long term investment strategy, where I don't have to be too involved in managing my money, but at the same time I am protected against sudden market downswings. The idea would be to invest into ETFs in order to reduce firm specific risk but at the same time enter a trailing stop market order (GTC) of about 10% (more / less) distance to market based on initial share price, so in case the market drops the shares get sold and the value is preserved. I do know there is at-least some narrative against market timing so I want some feedback on this. Would this strategy be complete or am I perhaps missing something? [link] [comments] |

2k/mo of disposable income, how should i invest it? Posted: 30 Jun 2018 04:13 AM PDT Posted this before but I didn't like the wording so here I go again. Hopefully a song just popped into your head like it did mine while typing that. Anyways. I've never invested, I know easy way would be 401k or Roth. Are there any safe alternatives that gross more money in a 5 to 10 year period? I plan to invest this amount steadily for the next 1-2 years and letting it sit while I start/finish college and of course continue investing what I can while in school if possible. I'm looking for something where I can start investing now and have a good return in the next 5-10 year to help get my life started on the right foot so I won't be struggling financially once I start my actual career (basically a rainy day fund I can use until i retire) and would start a 401k/Roth IRA once I'm in my career field to go towards retirement. Do you use Compushare or directly buy stocks or do you use a brokerage like Robinhood to buy shares? Twists and Turns in the Tesla Story | Prof. Aswath Damodaran valuation update Posted: 29 Jun 2018 09:48 AM PDT Professor Aswath Damodaran revisits his Tesla valuation in his latest blog entry: http://aswathdamodaran.blogspot.com/2018/06/twists-and-turns-in-tesla-story-boring.html TL;DR: Current valuation of $186 per share with negative cash flows for the next eight years and $22 billion in new capital needed over that period. "Tesla might be able to get its production up to 5,000 cars a week, using tents and spare parts, but Tesla needs to produce 30,000 cars per week by year 10" for a $186 valuation to hold. What is this subs take on the current state of Brk.b? - Interesting analysis inside Posted: 29 Jun 2018 08:33 AM PDT " The current technical condition for BRKB is weak. Although the stock has pulled back from higher prices, BRKB remains susceptible to lower prices. The stock has underperformed the market when compared to the S&P 500 over the last 50 trading days. The MACD-LT is confirming that the intermediate-term trend is bearish. BRKB's chart formation indicates the stock is in a strong downward trend. Momentum, as measured by the 9-day RSI, is negative. The stock is in a short-term oversold condition based on a Slow % K stochastic reading of 20 or lower. Over the last 50 trading sessions, there has been more volume on down days than on up days indicating that BRKB is under distribution, which is a bearish condition. The stock is trading below a falling 50-day moving average which confirms the weak technical condition of BRKB. The stock is trading below its rising 200-day moving average which is bearish. " This is my largest stake in an individual stock - as a semi rational buffet fan boy I am in this for the long haul. However my worry is the lack of tech exposure historically may lead to under-performance (even with considering AAPL position). Thoughts? I am not worried about Buffets age - I trust a lot of the company leadership, especially Ajit's [link] [comments] |

Posted: 29 Jun 2018 01:27 PM PDT I was looking at APPL earlier and learned that one of their main competitors is Dell. So I took a look at DMVT and saw a double top on the 1 year graph. I personally think Dell's laptops and computers are very popular and great products. I own a Dell laptop myself and their XPS line has been called the "macbook pro killer". My question is will the double top cause DMVT to go lower and possibly open up buying opportunities? [link] [comments] |

Posted: 29 Jun 2018 06:34 PM PDT Been using stocktwits for the past year and a half never had a problem up until now. I was looking at RENN and noticed a huge chart discrepancy. Here https://www.tradingview.com/chart/7LmkLCpo/ here https://www.nasdaq.com/symbol/renn here https://www.marketwatch.com/investing/stock/renn VS Here https://stocktwits.com/symbol/RENN here https://finviz.com/quote.ashx?t=RENN First off can someone explain why there are two different charts? I know this was trading at $10 the Thursday before it gaped down on a dividend and private placement. Second it is clear that shorts are censoring me and having my accounts banned everytime I post mentioning $RENN as bullish on having a gap to fill past $3.19 to $6 and are trying to get RENN to fall below $1 but if you do DD I read they have a buy back in place below $1. Shame on stocktwits but I am going to make bank off this error and obvious manipulation. RENN, I believe, is worth more than its current market cap. [link] [comments] |

Question about reverse split stock Posted: 29 Jun 2018 10:21 AM PDT So I recently learned of this term while studying moviepass stocks under HMNY. It was at an all time low the past week due to the fact they're bleeding cash while trying to lure in new subscribers. I had considered buying up a handful while they're in penny stock territory and seeing if they come out on top in the end. But then i heard that they're trying to get a reverse stock split vote before Dec. Me being a newbie investor, I don't really understand the full implications of this. For example if I have 1000 shares of a stock and it gets reverse split to whatever end result it ends up being, would I lose money right off the bat as a result? Or would the remaining stocks in my possession just go up in value immediately to offset the difference? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Jun 2018 12:56 PM PDT Companies like AT&T (T) and Comcast (CMCSA) are appealing to me because they provide internet connectivity services. However, I'm extremely bearish on cable and all of the other unnecessary services offered in these bundle packages. What companies would give me exposure to this? And how much of a barrier to entry is there for potential competitors? [link] [comments] |
How does the IRS actually catch TLH wash sales if at multiple brokerages? Posted: 29 Jun 2018 07:29 AM PDT For example I have account 1 that has say $VTI - no reinvestment.
