Stocks - Long or Short Chegg (CHGG)?

Stocks - Long or Short Chegg (CHGG)?

    Long or Short Chegg (CHGG)?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 08:34 AM PDT

This stock came across my radar as I teach on an adjunct basis and I also manage money as my primary business. Every student I know who has utilized their subscription service tells me it is a platform used to help students cheat, but under the guise of "tutoring". This is reflected in their fast growing subscription service. They also own a few other similar firms like Cramster, explicitly known as a cheating aid. They pivoted to this model after getting caught selling bootleg textbooks for profit.

Is this business sustainable? Is it just unethical but not illegal and will continue to grow? There is a great case for longs too, it is a business that should grow if nothing gets in their way. The way I see it they are capitalizing on the IP I have created (exams and homework that I personally create) without compensation. My other thought is that if I "can't beat them, join them", and I can provide my own answers for my courses for compensation on their site. Would love to hear everyone's thoughts and experiences.

Confused on why T-Mobile is down, looking for some insight

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 12:23 PM PDT

I have held 10 shares(at $55) of TMUS for a couple months now. I don't hear many controversies about the stock, I liked how they were investing into eSports, seemed like a good company that could reach around $75 by the end of 2018.

A few months back, TMUS and S tried to merge but couldn't come to an agreement. Stock dropped. Months later, topic comes up again, seems like an agreement is reached, stock drops a lot more for some reason??? I don't understand why the stock has dropped when it seems like an agreement is reached, and not too bad of a deal for TMUS. Seems pretty good for T-Mobile. Is the worry that the DOJ won't accept this merge, so people are trying to get out?

I am thinking about buying more stocks of TMUS bc now I feel like at $60 this stock is undervalued. I just feel as though people are worrying to much. I am not looking to sell at all, the minimum I think I am going to do is just hold unless it is looking extremely bad for TMUS to where it will drop far below where I bought it.

    Thanks for the advice

TL;dr Don't understand why TMUS is down when it seems like an agreement for the merge is made, that should be good news right? Is the only worry that the DOJ won't accept? I feel as people are exiting to premature and this stock can reach $75. I might buy more into TMUS. What do you guys think? Thanks.

How do defense contractors report earnings when they win a bid on a top secret project?

    Posted: 29 Apr 2018 03:18 PM PDT

Let's assume, Lockheed or Boeing gets some money ($100 billion from the U.S. government for argument's sake) to design something or roll out production of a bunch of armaments/planes/whatever but it's a top secret project.

How does that $100 billion get reported to shareholders? Can the company receive the money and put off on announcing the windfall until much later when the project is finished or declassified? Normally a company is responsible to its shareholders but are there special situations where the government can say "Look, we don't want Russia/China/whoever to know we're spending this much money on more jets. Keep it quiet for now and don't announce you have this cash yet."

Sorry if this is the wrong sub.

Can someone please explain to me why $MU has been taking such a hit lately?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 02:20 PM PDT

In the last two weeks, it's gone from roughly $54 to $45. Is there a specific reason for the dip? I'm guessing it will take another hit tomorrow when Apple releases their earnings (with their iPhones sales).

What is the NYSE American Steel Index XX: STEEL?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 07:40 AM PDT

I am doing a paper on steel, is this the price of a metric ton of a steel or an index of the strength of steel companies moving forward?

Found a quick piece of info that it's a moving metric on publicly traded companies. Can anyone confirm this?

    Thoughts on Ricky Guetirrez?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 01:39 PM PDT

I came across a guy the other day on youtube, Ricky Guetirrez. Ive watched a few of his videos, and for the most part it seems like solid advice, however he has that 300$ product of his. We all should know the rule about people trying to sell you things. . .

Has anyone had any success following his methods? Are there any notable criticisms of him, or his services? It is to my understanding that he makes his money through multiple investment types, flipping cars, real estate, stocks, etc, but does it work?

Times from buyback mentioned to actual action/announcement: ARLP

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 01:07 PM PDT

From the earnings call this morning: " The increase distribution just announced by our Board is one way ARLP is committed to returning cash to our unitholders. In addition to management's objective of increasing distributions by 1% per quarter in 2018, we are also actively evaluating the potential benefits of returning cash to unitholders through a unit buyback program. "

I was wondering if anyone had any information on when statements like this are made what the odds are of a buyback actually happening. And if one does happen how far out is it?

Company trading at a market cap of $40 million, and just signed a definite agreement to raise $100 for a premium. Too good to be true.

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 10:38 AM PDT

I am looking through companies to invest in, and I found one company that looks too good to be true. And I want some opinions about it. The company are trading at a $40 million market cap($0.80 a share), and have 57 million outstanding shares. They recently signed a definite agreement with an investment fund to raise $100 million USD($120 million if turned into cad), $3 a share. This is 3x their market cap. To me this seems too good to be true. But I wan't different opinions about it. What do you think?

The company is called BetterU and you can read about the press releases here if my explanation didn't make sense: https://ir.betteru.ca/investor-overview/press-releases/

Shop with a big run up pre earnings. Sell before close?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 10:21 AM PDT

Usually these stocks will have a dip before and rose after earnings, or rise before and dip after unless there's some huge surprise. I'd be green if I sold now, but I'm also greedy...

Diy Stock ticker powered by usb. Is it possible?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 09:19 AM PDT

So next year for my dorm I wanna make it as cool as possible so I wanted to make one of my summer projects a diy stock ticker. Most of the vids I have seen show people using an arduino or a raspberry pi but I was thinking of having something that would plug via usb into my Ubuntu laptop and gather the information from the laptop rather than a mini pc. Where can I start to make this thing? Thanks and regards, Thomas

    MFI Technical Indicator

    Posted: 29 Apr 2018 05:41 PM PDT

I have been trading for over 3 years and have consistently found really good success trading off of MFI, specifically trading once MFI has dipped below 20 on the daily chart. I have recently found great success in trading options intraday off of MFI, a very basic example is buying calls when MFI dips below 20 on the 1min chart and buying puts when MFI is over 70 on the 1min chart. Wanted to share this indicator with those of you that may not be familiar with it and see if those of you that use it have had similar success or trade it with a different strategy?

Where has all the volume gone?

    Posted: 29 Apr 2018 08:17 PM PDT

Since the correction/dip/mini crash whatever you wanna call it in February, volume has basically disappeared in most stocks and they have just been getting whipsawed, 2 steps forward and 2 steps backward, ending up right where they where a week ago. You can see the major stocks like $BABA, $AAPL, $SHOP, $NVDA, $BAC, $MSFT, etc up or down less than 1% on most days and then stagnating.

What has happened and will it stay like this?

    Thoughts on TTWO?

    Posted: 29 Apr 2018 06:00 PM PDT

I'm in for 35 shares at $103.5 average. I'll be holding for a few years at least, but it's been kinda taking a beating lately.

I think they're going to have a big year with Red Dead 2 and NBA 2k19, and Borderlands 3 in 2019.

I think they're a solid company, what are your thoughts? Would you invest?

Would anyone be interested in putting their picks on the blockchain?

    Posted: 29 Apr 2018 05:17 PM PDT

    How it would work

    1. Stock pickers post their picks on to the blockchain, encrypted
    2. The picks are automatically decrypted after a certain amount of time - say 6 months
    3. People can pay to get access to picks earlier, this price is set by the pickers

    Why it could work

    1. Pickers can now get fees on top of their investment gains. Furthermore there will be more buy interest, which will also increase their investment gains
    2. Buyers can get access to transparent and trusted data about stock pickers' true returns (since blockchain is uncompromisable), allowing them to make better decision w.r.t who to follow

Please post below with answers to the following questions:

    1. Would you be willing to put your picks on the blockchain as described above?
    2. Would you be willing to pay to see what the top percentile of stock pickers are buying?
