If you're new here, read this post first!

First, welcome to /r/stocks and congratulations on taking steps to better your financial future.

Before you make a post asking for advice or basic information, please consider these suggestions:

    1. Take a look through our wiki as a ton of info (or links leading to info) that people normally ask for can already be found there. This includes everything from the basics of what a stock is and how to buy stocks online to how to analyze a company as a potential investment.

    2. Join our chat room where basic questions can be answered instantly without the need to make a new post and wait for responses. With 70 users on during peak times, there is probably someone around to help you, though this is more likely during trading hours (9:30am - 4pm EDT).

    3. Use the search function as many questions you have were probably asked in the past.

After doing the above, we understand you may still have questions and will want help with your personal situation rather than simply reading about other people's situations. However, lately we've been receiving numerous low-quality posts along the lines of: "Hi. I'm new to stocks. How do I start?" Please note these types of posts may now be deleted without warning. With the very large and obvious links all around the subreddit directing users to the wiki, there is no reason anyone should be making these types of posts.

If you wish to make a post asking for guidance through the market/investing/stocks, please add detail about your current financial situation and the specific topics you need assistance with. Some questions that should be considered are: how old are you?, what is your income?, are you in debt?, what is your risk tolerance?, how many years of experience (or not) do you have?, how much capital will you be starting with?, do you have money in savings?, what topics have you read about and what do you still not understand?, are there any companies in particular you wish to invest in?, what kind of learning material are you interested in (e.g. books, articles, videos, websites)?, are you trying to generate an income from the market or just plan for retirement?, etc.

Generic posts do not give anyone insight into your personal situation and thus no meaningful advice can be given to you. As such, these posts will be deleted as they are of low quality and do not contribute to the subreddit.

tl;dr: If you would like people to put time into providing thorough advice for you, you need to put time into providing a thorough insight into your current situation. Generic, bare-bones, and low-effort posts will be removed.

You should also consider flairing your post as "Advice Request" or "Question" once posted so that it stands out to other users. Normally I flair all posts on my own when I can, but you can expedite the process by flairing your own post to make it more noticeable.

Made 30% since I started trading 7 months ago and all credits to r/stocks.

    Posted: 08 Mar 2018 11:36 AM PST

    Hello folks,

I am a 24 year old who started working barely a year ago. What started as a small experiment with 3 AAPL stocks is now standing at over a 1100$ gain. This sub has always been the starting point for all my research. I come here to check what's new, read the comments, then work backwards and start researching before I buy, sell or hold anything.

I never wanted to hold long and the plan was to always swing trade on a company during its earnings. Gradually, I started making educated choices, became confident and started holding, did not panic sell but doubled down whenever the market dropped and here I am. From shares pricing in the future effects to investors moving towards Gold at times of nuclear threat and towards bonds when their yield increases; this sub has taught me a lot.

The gains might not last long but I am glad I made it till here. I just wanted to thank you all. You guys are awesome.

Portfolio: AAPL - got in at 152, 164 NVDA - got in at 154, sold at 200, got in at 200 SHOP - got in at 80, doubled down during the Citron dip NFLX - got in around 160 and sold at 240 (regret big time) TWTR - got in at 19 and sold at 21 SQARE - got in at 37 AMD - got in at 11 and out at 13.5

I have decided to stay in the game long and I am now waiting for the next dip to invest in, V NFLX BABA AMZN

Let me know what you guys think. I know that my portfolio is completely tech and diversification is something I should do. I could not help it since I love those products I have invested in and think they can do well in the long run. Also, I regularly keep track of the tech industry news than others.

Has anyone else hopped on the $OKTA train

    Posted: 08 Mar 2018 10:14 AM PST

OKTA has seen crazy gains lately, and I haven't seen much discussion on here. The have grown 50% past month, and continue to beat estimates. Thoughts?

Big Gains or sell or hold?

    Posted: 07 Mar 2018 05:43 PM PST

    Hello,

Mid twenty's and I invested for the first time about 2yrs ago. All my stocks below have 30-150% profits. My question I am struggling with is do I hold hold hold onto these stocks for retirement and hope they continue to go up over 30yrs. Or do I take the profits and wait until the market drops and re invest? I struggle with nobody has been hurt taking a profit vs I got in at such a good price point that even if the market drops I wouldn't be able to buy it as cheap as I got in so I should hold until I'm old.

Netflix Apple Amazon Google Dr Pepper Facebook Microsoft Walmart Fedex

Lower Profits margins Verizon Southwest Visa Tyson

    Thank you for the feedback.

Can someone please explain getting even on stock

    Posted: 08 Mar 2018 12:13 PM PST

I got about 400$ loss from one trade and no wash sale. But I'm close to making it back with some swing and day trades on other stocks . Let's say I get back all 400 and don't invest anymore. How will that work for my taxes? I would just be even?

Claim 0 Single No other deductions

    Thanks

Made a video on my thoughts on $ULTA, would like to know if anyone agrees with my thesis!

    Posted: 08 Mar 2018 01:27 PM PST

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IgvehM79Pj8

Basically, looking at a 3-5 year chart, I feel that $ULTA has been beaten down to a attractive entry point, and given the good technical setup and a relatively strong balance sheet and earnings, I believe there is potential for quick gains especially with earnings right around the corner.

$10k split between 10 stocks? Or $10k split between 2-3 stocks? Besides being more diversified,is there an advantage to either?

    ISM.CA's Cannabis Play

    Posted: 08 Mar 2018 11:36 AM PST

ISM(.CA) is mid due-diligence for a (seemingly) certain acquisition of compassion cannabis. There's been some changes up top, but only a mild rise after some strong downs.

Seems the price is pretty undervalued to me with a solid acquisition (hopefully) soon, and at under 0.12 seems like a steal. Am I missing something or is it just starting to ramp back up?

It appears to be a pretty solid company but it has just taken an absolute beating today, currently down ~12%.

    COST will recover tomorrow.

    Posted: 07 Mar 2018 06:15 PM PST

Their earnings were decent, they have been constantly on the move to improve efficiencies in every department. Every 3 years their handbook they release makes it take longer to top out and ever so slightly helps reduce labor costs. The employees remain happy as they make more than anyone in retail by far. This is a company that although stuck in the dark ages of RPG programming is even making its way out of that. People are afraid of Amazon plain and simple, but Costco will keep trudging along with 91% renewal rates.

More so its about the experience, no other retail gives you that $1.50 hotdog and soda. Its a place once you have a family your kids get excited to get to go to for all the samples throughout the store.

I truly believe so long as the general market goes up, COST will be continuing to outperform it in spite of Amazon. The numbers tell you its a great company, and its expansions in Asia have been a huge success. Most of those stores in Japan, Korea, Taiwan, can pull in million dollar days on the regular. They do better than the stores in America. The expansion potential is insane.

Disclosure, I do own some COST in my portfolio.

On thinkorswim, is Bid and Ask Size divided by a certain number?

    Posted: 08 Mar 2018 09:46 AM PST

I'm new to thinkorswim, currently looking at level II of AMTX. The bid size says 49 and the ask size says 42. Is that correct? Or is it actually 4900 (or 49,000) on the bid and 4200 (42,000) on the ask?

    Trump Tariffs

I'm a short term trader looking at 43% gains in about 13 months. I really wanted to hit 50% and then slowly withdraw the funds but with all the talk about Trump Tariffs do you think the market will be shell-shocked?

Ant type of charting software that shows news that correlates to the ticker?

    Posted: 08 Mar 2018 09:05 AM PST

Example: hover over chart during a large dip, shows relevant articles that came out around that time.

I'd like to easily see what press releases or important fillings happened around the days of a major event.

Stock is up over 100% in a year and have not seen any discussion about them at all here.

A while back, Guggenheim Partners called them the next great SaaS franchise. Is this hype or not?

    Ping An Insurance (PNGAY)

    Posted: 08 Mar 2018 09:00 AM PST

So, I've kept a close eye on Ping An for awhile now. Their last earrings report had insane % increases across the board for absolutely everything. They're diversifying the company more and branching out, much like the other Chinese titans do.

I'm definitely very interested in taking a healthy position in it maybe before their next earnings this month.

However, I was a bit confused by one thing I hope someone here could help me with. I noticed they not only have their OTC listing in America which is PNGAY, their Hong Kong listing (2318.HKG), but then I noticed they also have a listing on the Shanghai Stock Exchange, 601318 SHG. I don't recall ever seeing a Chinese company with listings on both the Shanghai and Hong Kong index. Can someone explain that to me?

    Pet Insurance/Medical Stocks

    Posted: 07 Mar 2018 08:08 PM PST

Stocks such as Zoetis (pet pharma), IDEXX Laboratories (animal health and livestock), Trupanion (pet insurance), PetMed Express (online medicine) have made a killing in the market over the last couple of years. More people are treating pets like a part of the family if they don't have kids and even if they do. Anyone with knowledge on the subject/industry care to share their take and best companies to look at for a long-term hold?

    Edit: Added PetMed Express

    stop loss as percentage?

    Posted: 07 Mar 2018 07:08 PM PST

My current stock broker only lets me specify stop loss conditions as a fixed price of a stock, but this requires me to update it as the stock goes up. Does anyone know any stockbroking platform that let you specify it as a percentage of the daily opening price? e.g. it automatically sells it if the stock drops 5%?

    The Blue Chip Bonanza (Opinion)

    Posted: 08 Mar 2018 03:13 AM PST

Going around this sub-Reddit I see a lot of people sharing their portfolios and a lot of people commenting on them. And one of the things that catches my eye is the fact that I find myself hesitating over the different interpretations of the term "Blue Chip stock". When someone is looking for advice on their long term portfolio, people comment on some of the positions as if they are long term worthy even though there is no long term evidence to prove their reliability and long term profitability. Anyone else relating to this? And so I ask the question, what requirements do you hold to consider a stock a BC stocks? And when does a stock become a Blue Chip stock. I.E are we really considering Netflix to be a Blue Chip this early on?
