    Renters Insurance for what?

    Posted: 02 Mar 2018 02:18 PM PST

Just got my first apartment, and the owner said its a must to have renters insurance. What is the point of renters insurance? How much does that generally cost? Is their a cheaper renter insurance in Oklahoma someone may know?

Why is my auto insurance sky high...?

    Posted: 02 Mar 2018 08:54 PM PST

31M and 32F (Recently got a ticket for going >15mph over)

    We have 2 cars...2015 Lexus IS250 and a 06 350z. Live in Central FL.

    Insurance is:

    BIL - 100k/300k Property - 300k PIP - 1k Ded Uninsured Motorist - Rejected... Comprehensive - 1k Ded on both cars Collision - 1k Ded Only Lexus, Z - none.

For this converge, I am paying $346 monthly....my credit isn't horrible...couple dings but wow. Sadly I can't stop paying for insurance as I need to get to work and don't want to sell my paid off vehicle.

I've tried other companies but some won't even insurance us...which is strange. We've filed 3 glass claims over the past 5 years, 1 accident (other driver cited), and 1 speeding violation.

I am money conscious, but not sure what my options are here.

Do doctors/specialists only get paid when a patient visits them?

    Posted: 02 Mar 2018 11:29 AM PST

My dad was diagnosed with kidney cancer in mid January. The oncologist made a referral to a urologist. By the time the referral was approved and appointment scheduled, almost 2 weeks went by. We go to the appointment and the guy says, "I looked over your charts and this is more complicated than what I can operate on so I'll write you a referral to a different specialist but if you have any questions, I'll be happy to answer them." We were both kind of frustrated with that so we waited for the next appointment.

The next doctor pretty much said the same thing. He looked over all the charts and scans, and needs to refer us somewhere else. Then the 3rd doctor said the same thing and referred my dad to the university, where he said my dad should've been referred to from the beginning.

We're both very frustrated with how this has been going. My dad is feeling worse almost daily, yet it took a month and a half just to finally get a referral to a specialist at the university. He hasn't gotten any sort of treatment or test done since the initial CT scans and MRIs. Just bouncing from one doctor to another.

So my question is, why do they make us wait and come in for an appointment just to tell us that they're not the right doctor for this? It's not like they ordered more tests or anything else, they just wasted our time. Do they only get paid when we show up for the visit? That's the only thing I can think of.

    Reasonable dispatch?

    Posted: 02 Mar 2018 10:40 PM PST

Wall of text but I feel like the details matter...

On 2/2 I was involved in a traffic accident. I was navigating through a roundabout and the other party failed to yield and pulled out in front of me. According to the accident report the other party was issued a citation for failure to yield at a roundabout. The accident report also states a video of the crash is available.

I opened a claim with her insurance company. After taking both of our statements and reviewing the accident report they are saying they want to see the video of the crash before determining liability because the other party is claiming she is not at fault.

This all shook out within a week of opening the claim. Sometime around 2/10 they said they requested the video. On 2/20 I followed up and they said the officer said it was mailed out on 2/17. Today I contacted them and they said they had not received it, they reached back out to the police and was told they had not sent anything yet. So insurance just thinks they are waiting for the police to get to fulfilling the request.

I called the police and was told the footage is actually held by a different police agency than the one that responded. I called the ones that had it and was told they don't release footage if anyone was issued a citation until after their initial court appearance. The other party's court date isn't until 3/21.

I called back the insurance company and relayed this info. They said we just have to wait until they can get the video footage.

Is this uncommon? I question if they are abiding by reasonable dispatch in handling this. By the time the other party's court date rolls around it will be nearly 2 months. My car is not driveable. I only have liability coverage so my insurance company can't do anything. I was told IF they accept full liability they will cover a rental. I have had a rental for 4 weeks but am not 100% sure they will reimburse me.

Would-be thieves left my car in neutral, causing damage

    Posted: 02 Mar 2018 09:36 PM PST

Last night, some potential thieves or just idiot kids went into my Nissan Maxima, put the keys in ignition, and put the car in neutral. The car coasted and hit a tree, causing some bad damage.

They ended up rummaging through several cars in the neighborhood before finally stealing another car.

Anyways, my insurance agent tells me I might have a hard time with the claim, because I had left the car key in the car itself. Is this true? Thank you for any help.

Better for an accident to be pinned on me or my son?

    Posted: 02 Mar 2018 09:04 AM PST

My son caused a minor accident (~$500 bumper damage to the other car) about 2 years ago. We share the same first and last name. When I got a quote for car insurance, I learned that the accident had hit my driving record, not his.

My question is whether it would be helpful to correct this?

He's not currently on our car insurance. He's 19 and won't be on any car insurance for at least another year or two. I'm in my 40s. We live in Virginia.

I don't think it caused any rate increases when the accident happened but it affected my new quote in that I couldn't get one as the record they pulled showed an accident I didn't reveal in the quoting process. I'm pretty sure I can get a better rate with another carrier but am worried about how to handle this discrepancy.

So should I correct it? Or is it likely to cost him more (in a year or two when he's back on insurance) than it will cost me?

    Thanks!

First accident in my new state, need some advice?

    Posted: 02 Mar 2018 08:08 PM PST

First off, I know that this is my fault for not being on top of things/generally unaware of how insurance works. I did a lot of research today and I have some worries.

I just got into my first ever auto accident today. Fortunately, everyone was okay and both cars have minor scratches, with mine being more banged up. It was entirely my fault.

I am covered under my parents' insurance plan (Geico) in TX, however, I just graduated and moved to WA, where the accident happened. The vehicle title is in my mom's name, but she is letting me use it for now. My license is also from Texas.

I plan on getting my own insurance ASAP now that I am more familiar with the rules, but prior to today, my mom wanted to save some money by waiting for my vehicle's registration (TX) to expire before registering in WA. For that reason, I am also still under her insurance plan. I now know that that was dumb and I plan on registering soon after getting my own insurance in the state of Washington. I'm not sure what to do about the title yet and whether my mom will give me this car forever.

Is it likely that I would get in a lot of trouble (financially and legally) for having an accident in WA, when I am technically covered in TX? What kind of things should I be worried about? I'm very stressed that they may drop my parents' policy for not disclosing that one of the drivers moved, but we just didn't think about that before it happened. I'm also worried that they may suspend my license and registration.

Insurance for a Music Practice Space?

    Posted: 02 Mar 2018 06:59 PM PST

I rent a warehouse that is used as a practice space for my band and I use the office as my art studio. I'm not sure what type of insurance I should get- I would like to have instruments/gear/art tools covered and I think I need coverage for injury or liability. We sometimes let our friends Bands practice and I want to make sure we are covered in case someone gets injured. Also if there are leaks or broken windows from inclement weather/vandalism (since we are in a sketchy neighborhood)

Wind damage to shingles, now what?

    Posted: 02 Mar 2018 01:46 PM PST

The nor'easter is blowing 30-40 mi winds as I write this. I looked out in the yard and saw several shingles have come off as a result. I'm curious if homeowners insurance typically covers this sort of damage.

I have homeowners insurance through USAA. My roof is old, but I believe the extreme wind definitely played a role in the failure of the shingles.

CT Homeowners Insurance, Flooding & Poor Construction

    Posted: 02 Mar 2018 05:00 PM PST

I believe my basement is flooding due to poor construction work. Specifically a retaining wall that extends perpendicular to either side of house and down out to street to make the driveway bigger. Ever since the wall was built the basement floods during heavy rainstorms and it never had before. All work was permitted and signed off on by an inspector. It has become clear though that a lot of important things were left out, like proper drainage behind the wall and no weep holes either. The contractor filed for bankruptcy and from what I can gather is no longer in the country. Can I file a claim with homeowners or am I screwed?

Rate increase for accident that wasn’t my fault.

    Posted: 02 Mar 2018 12:43 PM PST

Hey guys, I'll post a few links in the comments for posts that I put on here about my accident. It happened 10/28/16 and my truck was parked in the lot of my apartment and someone was going 85 in a 25 went airborne and totaled my truck as well as 4 other cars and his own. His insurance ended up covering everything but I just changed my insurance company and my rate is higher than my quote because they said that they ran my name and it came up on a claim so my rate is $600/year more than it should. Is there anything that I can do?

[King County, WA] Moving off of my parents' car insurance, what coverage should I consider?

    Posted: 02 Mar 2018 12:18 PM PST

I've been on my parents' insurance for either 7 or 8 years (I'm not sure how learner's permits in Arkansas work, I started driving at 15 and was given full reign of the car [but not the title] at 16). We're with USAA and I would really like to stay with them unless their rate is unrealistic compared to other options. I'm also female, have had stellar high school and college grades, and have never gotten a ticket or been in a wreck; I'm not yet sure how that factors in.

I have three main considerations and I'm wondering if there is anything else I've skipped. For context my car's Kelly Blue Book value is $1.7-2.7k, something that I can pay out of pocket for replacement, and I'm not reliant on needing a rental if my car is totalled or in the shop.

    1. What is reasonable coverage--not just minimum coverage--so that I'm not bankrupted if I'm responsible for significant medical bills?

    2. What kind of uninsured motorist coverage should I get for my own medical expenses rather than the (almost nonexistent) value of my car?

    3. We're unmarried, but I want my partner (who has his own insurance) to be able to drive my car and vice versa with each other's permission. (We have a tandem parking space. I'm normally the only one that drives to work, but it's nice for him to go get food without me. I also want to be okay swapping drivers when we go on long distance vacations.) How huge of an expense is this and which company would be responsible for what?

My Car Insurance trying to not pay for accident damage. Need advice!

    Posted: 02 Mar 2018 02:01 PM PST

I'm living in Vancouver, BC, CANADA. After accident, my car insurance company are not fully covering my damage.

As I was traveling straight, a person appeared in front of me, while taking his left turn. As I tried to swerve out of the way, my right bumper collided on the right side of his two doors.

Other driver claimed full responsibly, so no deductible on my bumper repair, but my car insurance company are not covering my windshield damage.

The Result (to my car): was damage on the right side bumper which has hole in it, and the lower right hand side of windshield has two chips (same side as the bumper damage).

My car insurance company says they are not covering windshield, because it is "IMPOSSIBLE" for debris from the other guy's car to fly up and hit my windshield, because the impact of both cars was so low to the ground.

They say the windshield damage occurred from rock chips at a different time from the accident.

All I know is before the accident, my windshield had no chips in it. It was in perfect condition.

The car insurance company guy was rude to me on the phone, and told me to phone the "dial-a-claim" number to set up an appointment at a my car insurance company claim centre, to dispute it with them.

Within the a week of the accident, those two chips sprouted huge cracks which stretch across my windshield (the car insurance company says the stretched cracks were initiated by impact of accident, when chips were already there). Also, there is no dirt in the cavities of the chips (which indicates they are new chips).

Is there an explanation for these two chips in my window? How can I argue with them and have them cover my windshield damage?

Insurance wont pay cause theirs no damage to his car!? HELP?

    Posted: 02 Mar 2018 12:18 PM PST

Long story short is i was driving in the highway when it was snowing and this car in front of me spinned out doing a 360. Once I seen him do that the car behind him turned to the other lane almost causing a crash and once i seen the first car spin out i pushed my brakes but i knew i was gonna hit him because of the heavy snow i was just sliding and hit the dude that switched lanes then i hit the dude that spinned outta control. He also made another 2 van crashed each other because of the spinned he did. It was very busy that day and i got the police report saying he was speeding and also the car that switched lanes was speeding also. The police report said i was following close which i know i wasn't. The dude that spinned out insurance said they was gonna pay me and gave me my car value at $5,600 but just today he said i lost and thats because the dude didnt have no damage to his car that spinned out. I was confused because the police report said their were damages on his front bumper. This whole case is a mess and sloppy because their was a total of 5 car that got into the crash. Any help or advice is very helpful. POLICE REPORT: https://imgur.com/a/AQSLb (READ THE POLICE REPORT) IM UNIT#4 This happened in Minnesota, Bloomington

Dental insurance covers orthodontics but not through Smile Direct Club. Is it possible to submit a request to my insurance to include this coverage or request an exception?

    Posted: 02 Mar 2018 11:09 AM PST

I'm aware this might be impossible but I figure I'd give it a shot anyway.

My dental insurance covers 80% of orthodontics, up to $2000 max.

I went to an orthodontics office and was quoted, with insurance, $1500 for regular braces, $2100 for ceramic braces, and $3250 for Invisalign. After looking into all of these options, I was hesitant to do any of them. I thought Invisalign seemed promising, but even that requires a permanent attachment to your teeth so that the aligners have something to hold onto.

When I learned about Smile Direct Club, it seemed perfect. There are no permanent attachments, just the clear aligners that you can take out temporarily during the day to eat, etc. I only have a little bit of crowding in my front teeth, so Smile Direct Club would be perfect for me based on the reviews I've read. I went in for a scan and looking at the computer generated pictures, the expected results would be perfect for me.

The cost for Smile Direct Club is $1949 total if you pay upfront ($1850 plus $99 for retainers). I was excited thinking that my insurance would cover 80% of this, $1559.20, and I would only be responsible for $389.80. I called my insurance to confirm that this would be covered, and was told that the orthodontics coverage on my policy only covers in-office orthodontics, not mail-in services. The insurance is United Concordia, and she said they do not have any plans that would cover Smile Direct Club. My dental insurance is through my employer so there's no option to change to a different insurance company.

I would still like to do Smile Direct Club, but I would like to try and get my insurance to pay the 80% so that my total out of pocket expenses are $390 instead of $1949.

I'm wondering if there's any chance if I write a letter either requesting that they expand coverage to include mail-in services such as Smile Direct Club, or requesting a specific exception to cover it for me, if that would even be worth my time. Do members ever do this and succeed?

    Dream of rental trailer

    Posted: 02 Mar 2018 05:51 AM PST

Apologies if this is inappropriate, but I had a liability-based bad dream, and was wondering what the outcome would be. My wife rented a trailer, similar to one you'd see on an 18-wheeler, but half the size. She parked it on a grassy hill, uphill from several other cars. A few hours after disconnecting it from our truck, she went to get some items from inside the trailer. Unfortunately, the action of opening the trailer caused it to slide down the hill and crash into two cars, causing major damage to the cars, and minor damage to the trailer. She declined all insurance from the rental company, and did not pay with a credit card that has rental coverage. (I asked her in the dream: my dream self was very upset that we'd be paying out of pocket.) Would either auto or homeowners likely cover us in this situation?

Geico raised my monthly payment, why?

    Posted: 02 Mar 2018 12:49 PM PST

Geico raised my monthly car insurance payment $10 for the next six months. I haven't filed any claims, no accidents, nothing. Why are they able to do this?

I called and asked, the representative told me rates have changed in my area. I don't see how they could account for $10 a month, seems awfully steep.
