We encourage all our visitors to ask those investing related questions they were always too afraid to ask.

The members of /r/investing are here to answer and educate!

NOTE If your question is "I have $10,000, what do I do?" or anything similar. There is no single answer to this question, but we will also need A LOT MORE information if we are to give some sort of answer

    • How old are you?
    • Are you employed/making income? How much?
    • What are your objectives with this money? (buy a house? Retirement savings?)
    • What is your risk tolerance? (Do you mind risking it at blackjack or do you need to know its 100% safe?)
    • What are you current holdings? (Do you already have exposure to specific funds and sectors?)
    • Any other assets? House paid off? Cars? Expensive girlfriend? (not really an asset)
    • What is your time horizon? Do you need this money next month? Next 20yrs?
    • Any big debts?
    • Any other relevant financial information will be useful to give you a proper answer.

Be aware that these answers are just opinions of Redditors and should be used as a starting point for your research. You should strongly consider seeing a registered financial rep before making any financial decisions!

FTC investigating Facebook; FB stock price down 5.9%

    Posted: 26 Mar 2018 07:51 AM PDT

    https://twitter.com/reutersbiz/status/978281316516024320?s=21

    https://www.cnbc.com/2018/03/26/ftc-confirms-facebook-data-breach-investigation.html

"The FTC takes very seriously recent press reports raising substantial concerns about the privacy practices of Facebook. Today, the FTC is confirming that it has an open non-public investigation into these practices," the agency said in a statement.

The FTC declined to confirm last week that it was investigating Facebook and whether it violated a consent decree the tech company signed with the agency in 2011.

The consent decree required that Facebook notify users and receive explicit permission before sharing personal data beyond their specified privacy settings.

A violation of the consent decree could carry a penalty of $40,000 per violation.

How does one invest in dip?

    Posted: 26 Mar 2018 09:16 AM PDT

I'm already heavily leveraged into Kraft, Hidden Valley, French's, but with the ongoing volatility in the market over the past few weeks I'm looking to diversify.

Are there any good dip ETFs I should look into?

What are good ETFs for China growth?

    Posted: 27 Mar 2018 02:05 AM PDT

    Hello,

I'm planning on opening a long position in Tencent, and increasing my exposure in other major Chinese players like Alibaba, JD, Boazun, Weibo.

I would just like to ask what the strongest ETFs are to mirror growth in China, especially in the e-commerce / tech industry.

Thank you for any and all help! :)

P.S. - Please feel free to suggest other great / strong China plays you believe in!

FTSE comes to its senses and removes Longfin ($LFIN) from the Russell 3000

Now lets watch the fireworks at index ETFs are forced to sell their holdings in the company, when it is no longer a constituent of the Russell 2000/3000. My data sources suggest that they own over 25% of the free float, so this should crash the stock.

    really dumb question about buying/selling

    Posted: 26 Mar 2018 12:45 PM PDT

I'm sure the answer to this is common knowledge, but I can't seem to find an answer to it. I am 100% new to investing, so please play nice.

it seems common knowledge that a company's stock value dropping goes hand in hand with people selling off stock. But in order to sell a stock, doesn't someone else have to buy it? Wouldn't an uptick in people selling stock for one company be the same thing as saying there's an increase in buying?

What is the business model of tastytrade ?

    Posted: 27 Mar 2018 04:09 AM PDT

Hi - I wonder what you people think. I am following tastytrade for quite a while and besides being very entertaining and helpful in learning options, i just wonder how they make money. It's hard to believe they put all their time and money in the program just to make the world a better place. What do you think ? Is it just the Commissions they make as a brokerage-firm ? Do they actually trade with the money people put into their acounts ? Do they maybe take some kind of opposite position ? What do you think ?

Leveraged ETF with Dollar cost averaging

    Posted: 26 Mar 2018 09:37 PM PDT

Hey guys im new to this page so hopefully this post reaches where it's meant to!

I was wondering if anyone here has ever backtested a leveraged etf using dollar cost averaging? I know most leveraged etfs were only introduced post GFC however I'd be interested to see how they would have performed over the past 30 to 50 years. I'm not sure how difficult this would be to backtest, i'd assume you could start with an initial amount ($), take daily price historical data from the S&P500 and multiply daily profit/loss % by 3x in order to project future value?

Would anyone be willing or able to backtest a strategy that involved investing into a leveraged ETF with an initial amount of $5,000 followed by reinvesting $5,000 each quarter over the past 30 years to determine what the overall value of your investment would be today?

Alternatively if someone could please lead me in the right direction on how I could calculate this myself (i.e. if there is an article or video on how to do this) it would be hugely appreciated!

Buying Big cap etfs, doesn't it assume the biggest companies in the world will continue to grow?

    Posted: 26 Mar 2018 11:17 PM PDT

So we expect these ETFs to grow by : 1. increasing their already large market share 2. M and A 3. be cash rich and giving dividends (not capital gain per say)? Am I naïve to say that with companies maximising internet/e commerce etc there is less growth available for large companies?

TL DR: SP 500 etf companies are mostly in very mature stages of their life cycle?

    Brazilian Treasuries

    Posted: 26 Mar 2018 05:33 PM PDT

American here wondering A) how do I buy Brazilian bonds, and B) what sort of tax/tariff/etc. I'd be looking at.

I currently use Schwab as my primary broker, and Robinhood for dicking around. I'm willing to set up an account with a foreign broker that's reputable...but I'd rather stick with either a US or EU-based broker if at all possible.

Alternatively, is there maybe some kind of ETF/ETN that I can use to capitalize on their 9% rates somehow?

How was your experience with an investing club?

    Posted: 26 Mar 2018 07:06 PM PDT

Sorry, this might not be directly related to investing, but I opened a money market account...

    Posted: 26 Mar 2018 08:56 PM PDT

Really, my question is: Is there some way I am getting screwed over?

I am a college student, and so I am trying to save up some money. I had roughly 4500 in my bank account, so I decided to think of ways to make passive income without being too risky. Because of that, stocks didn't sit right with me, I couldn't do a CD because I needed more liquidity, and so I finally decided on doing a money market account. My account balance can waive the management fee, so really the only bad thing is that I am restricted to 6 transactions a month within that account, which isn't a big deal because I have a separate checking account for smaller, more frequent transactions. I'm having trouble seem to understand why this is not (at least with my current exposure and knowledge) a more popular alternative to a traditional savings account. Or am I just not realizing something and getting screwed over? I can detail my plans for the 6 transactions/month if someone wants, but some advice would be nice.

What do you all think of Schwab's Intelligent Portfolio?

    Posted: 26 Mar 2018 09:16 AM PDT

I know that people don't like that it usually keeps 7% in cash, but other than that, what do you think about it? As an 18 year old should I actively manage my retirement etc. by just choosing a couple equities to hold over the long term, or just give it to the Intelligent Portfolio to manage?

Arizona governor suspends Uber's ability to test self-driving cars

    Posted: 26 Mar 2018 06:50 PM PDT

PHOENIX, Ariz. (Reuters) - The governor of Arizona on Monday suspended Uber's ability to test self-driving cars on public roads in the state following a fatal crash last week that killed a 49-year-old woman pedestrian.

FILE PHOTO - Doug Ducey smiles after voting in the Paradise Valley section of Phoenix, Arizona August 26, 2014. REUTERS/Samantha Sais In a letter sent to Uber Chief Executive Dara Khosrowshahi and shared with the media, Governor Doug Ducey said he found a video released by police of the crash "disturbing and alarming, and it raises many questions about the ability of Uber to continue testing in Arizona."

With its wide and open roads, good weather and a light regulatory touch, Arizona has been prime testing ground for Uber Technologies Inc and other autonomous vehicle developers. Ducey in 2016 welcomed Uber to his state with celebration, saying at the time "We want you to know Arizona does want Uber."

Is There Value in US Semiconductors?

    Posted: 26 Mar 2018 07:31 AM PDT

Last week, US semiconductor stocks sold off on worries of a potential trade war between the US and China. LRCX (-5.67%), MU (-7.99%), and AMAT (-6.07%) were 3 of the 4 worst performing stocks in the S&P 500 on Friday. Momentum, as measured by the 14-day RSI, suggests these 3 stocks are getting close to oversold territory. After the recent sell-off, do these stocks now present an attractive entry point for long-term investors?

    Netflix Performance Next Downturn

    Posted: 26 Mar 2018 09:59 PM PDT

How does everyone think Netflix will weather the next big downturn or recession? It has a very successful subscription model which is affordable and people love. If a recession were to hit, people would be more likely to cut the cord and replace it with something much cheaper in Netflix.

Content is king and they have been acquiring and developing content like crazy even if means a negative cash flow. Long-term it will turn positive for sure. Their international opportunity is huge as well. Thoughts?

    Portfolio management question

    Posted: 26 Mar 2018 11:56 AM PDT

Suppose I own 30 stocks and because of the recent sell off, my portfolio is down 5-10%.

Assuming out of these 30 stocks there are 12-15 stocks I have higher conviction in than the rest, should I cut my losses on mid-conviction, and pile the proceeds into the high conviction such that I end up with a more concentrated portfolio with lower avg purchase price?

Or do u just keep the 30 and wait for them to recover?

    Curious to hear perspectives.
