Bank on PSLF or pay off my loans aggressively? Posted: 02 Mar 2018 10:25 PM PST I have $150k in federal loans. I work for a Title 1 school district and would likely qualify for PSLF. However, given the current political climate, I'm not sure if I should start paying my loans off aggressively or hope and wish that my Lian's are forgiven after 120 payments. If the program is scrapped at any time, I don't want to have wasted all that time and racked up interest. Any discussion, suggestions, or opinions are welcome! [link] [comments] |
Question about claiming a deduction for student loan interest Posted: 02 Mar 2018 09:04 PM PST I just finished graduate level school, and have loans from this schooling (which I have not started making payments on). My parents are claiming me as a dependent for 2017 tax year, since it helps their tax bracket. I want to know if I start making loan payments in 2018, will my status as a dependent in 2017 affect my eligibility to claim a deduction for student loan interest on my 2018 tax return (which I will be filing separately since I will have income starting in July)? UPDATE: Staying in IBR for a huge income year? Posted: 02 Mar 2018 08:49 PM PST EEk help I'm freaking out! Here is my original post: https://www.reddit.com/r/StudentLoans/comments/7ywoh5/staying_in_ibr_for_a_huge_income_year/ I faithfully submitted my annual application and expected to pay the standard 10-yr payoff amount this year, no problem, but Navient just sent me this letter: "we're not able to approve your Income-Based Repayment request. Based on the documentation you provided, your financial circumstances do not meet the federal definition of "partial financial hardship" required for Income-Based Repayment." Today is my due date and I'm trying to avoid stress. Ahh! [link] [comments] |
Nelnet paying by account messed up...? Posted: 02 Mar 2018 08:20 PM PST I just made a payment to cover all of the interest from all of my loans so they don't balloon up (I make huge payments towards a specific loan with the highest interest rate each month) So I just made the payment to cover all interest for all loans and all Nelnet did was take my payment and just apply the whole thing towards one specific loan with the highest interest rate...... I didn't pay by group. I paid by account. I don't know if every loan service is the same but specific loans are by groups. My account is all groups combined What the hell? When I want to pay off a specific loan I pay by group. When I want to make a huge payment and allocate it through all groups I pay by account... If I just want to pay interest do I have to litereally go through each group and pay off the accrued interest amount? Two months ago when I wanted to pay off all of my interest paying by account worked just fine.... [link] [comments] |
FedLoans put my loans into forbearance? Posted: 02 Mar 2018 07:07 PM PST Long story short. I had loans from undergrad that I was making payments on, and filled out the waiver to ignore any school changes and keep them in repayment. I graduated grad school and noticed my loans were put in forbearance even though I requested them not to be. Any reason for this? I called and they told me all they can do is submit the request to put them back into repayment, they aren't sure what happened. Will I need to submit a new IBR application because of this now? Will this happen again once I go back to school? (PhD) Slightly irritating that the waiver was ignored and there's no explanation as to why. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Mar 2018 04:48 PM PST My loan serviced is nelnet, I checked my account today and saw that two of my three loans were put in national disaster forbearance. I assume it's because of Hurricane Harvey, but I wasn't affected and I never applied for any type of forbearance. I contacted nelnet on their chat function but the person I talked to couldn't tell me what happened. Any of you have an idea as to why this was placed on my account? Or why only on two of the three loans? And how will it affect me? [link] [comments] |
Has anyone heard of "Unified Document Services?" Are they legit or a scam? Posted: 02 Mar 2018 02:18 PM PST I received a letter in the mail the other day from them stating that my federal student loans may be eligible for consolidation that is federally backed with a lower rate. I went through all the steps to sign up with a representative on the phone that seemed to know what he was talking about. Told me the federal government will buy back my loans from my current loan provider (Navient) and then be forgiven for the rest of my loan after 240 payments. There is a $799 processing fee for this which raised some concern. I have not payed anything yet and I am suppose to fill out some paperwork and send it back. Curious to know if anyone else has dealt with these people. Thanks. [link] [comments] |
1098-e not reflecting interest paid Posted: 02 Mar 2018 07:47 AM PST Earlier in 2017, I refinanced my student loans with Navient through a "best rate" lender. This happened to be Navient again saving several percent interest. I jut got my 1098e and it says I paid $8.82 in interest for 2017 when in reality I probably paid closer to $1,200... I have called them twice and finally someone said I'm not eligible for 1098e reporting with the current private consolidation loan I have. They didn't give a reason why. This doesn't seem right as the funds were used for eligible education costs. I believe they have made an error. Does anyone in this subreddit know if this is true? [link] [comments] |
IBR - File jointly or separately? Posted: 02 Mar 2018 07:50 AM PST Hello Reddit, My wife and I scoured the internet, but the information we found was pretty scarce on our exact situation. We were hoping to get an easy answer on the best method, or what exactly is looked at on income based repayment programs. My wife and I just got married. I make significantly more than my wife (85,000 vs her 42,000). I have no student loans, but she has about $60,000 in loans. We've heard everywhere to file separately as my income added on will greatly increase her monthly payments, and she's starting her loan forgiveness program (social worker). Here's where we get confused: we live in Wisconsin. It's a marital property state and I just talked to my tax advisor and he said that half of my income will show up as hers as you have to share certain things in Wisconsin being married. Student loan calculators seem to not count my income in if we're married but file separately, but other ones do? I'm really worried as I can't seem to get a solid answer on what we should do and how this will impact her payments. I would hate for us to file a certain way and for it to impact us negatively over this entire next year, especially if we are looking for the loans to be forgiven. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Mar 2018 12:47 PM PST I haven't had a girlfriend in years. By my own standard I attribute it to student loans and probably um.. not being desirable in general. Would you date a guy with student debt? I used to have no problem in this arena [link] [comments] |
To Pay or Not To Pay Student Loans While Being Deferred? Posted: 02 Mar 2018 05:44 AM PST I have my student loans in deferment for another 10 months. Will it help my credit score to pay at least the interest collected plus a little over (but not the full payment amount) while it's in deferment, or should I wait for it to be up then start making regular payments?
