How much did you spend on your website?

    Posted: 01 Mar 2018 03:11 PM PST

Hi! I'm about to launch a SaaS similar to that of SquareSpace/Wix/Weebly. The software I built allows me to create beautifully designed websites in minutes (using an engine I've developed).

DIY template solution -> My product <- Custom-built site by professional

The problem I am having isn't whether or not my product will sell, but how much I should charge for it. I am trying to figure my pricing before launch.

    Questions:

    1) How much did you spend on your website?

    2) How much do you spend on your website a month/year?

    3) What are some things you wish were easier?

    Thank you.

Setting up a Registered address & postal addresses

    Posted: 02 Mar 2018 03:19 AM PST

Hi, I want to have my business be a registered address instead of my home address. I'm an IT contractor. The the price of this service looks to be ~£40 per year, but they only forward HMRC / Companies house post.
There's an upgrade for "commercial" post which includes post from suppliers, customers, banks etc. (for about £50).

I don't really use much post, only bank statements + the HMRC stuff. £50 is excessive for my purposes. Can I just have a registered address, and then get the bank to use my home address?

How do IT (or other) contractors normally set this up?

Closed My Business Last Year, Do I Still File Taxes?

    Posted: 01 Mar 2018 01:13 PM PST

I had a LLC(Partnership) that was open for just under a year (December 2016-December 2017). I ended up selling an assets the business had and closing it back in December. Now, the business did have revenue, but it also had a ton of expenses and definitely lost money on paper.

I had one partner and the business was incorporated in NJ. We have so far gotten 2 1099-Misc's from some businesses that sub contracted us, but not for a bunch of other ones we worked with. In addition, a lot of the income we got was in cash. Is there a certain date where they have to send the 1099-misc's by? Maybe all of them aren't sending them or they got lost in the mail. (We had a PO Box, but I closed it and forwarded the address). I would obviously prefer not to deal with filing taxes, but I will if I have to in order to prevent problems in the future.

Should I wait and see if I get more 1099-Miscs for the business, or just file what I have?

    Sales without sales experience ?

    Posted: 01 Mar 2018 05:20 PM PST

Hey guys. I have a bit of an issue, in which I am struggling to make sales.

I run a lead generation & marketing practice, and my firm is great at getting the phone to ring/people to inquire.. but I cant close the deals for the most part.

So my problem is: I get leads on the phone, but freeze up. I don't know if its just me not wanting to oversell myself/services or sound too sleezy or what.

My current clients interactions were done mostly online/emails, and I can do that fine. But now, we're trying to scale and I'm required to spend a bit more time on the phone..

What have you all done to learn how to talk more fluid?

    Thanks!

    Input from spouse/significant other

    Posted: 01 Mar 2018 07:50 PM PST

Curious to know how everyone works with or without their significant other regarding their small business?

Do they work full time with you? Part time? Not at all?

I know couples that work great together and others that can't even be around each other when a project is going on. I know some business owners that don't involve their significant at all, to the point they honestly don't know anything about their company. What works best for everyone here?

    Setbacks in launching startup

    Posted: 01 Mar 2018 07:10 PM PST

I am planning to start a dental practice from scratch with my SO. Of all the things I have had to learn to transition from dentist to business owner, I wish I was more prepared at how hard it is to secure a decent location for the clinic.

We have been searching for 8 months, had 4 negotiations that fell through (all for different reasons like landlord not wanting to fix electricals, conflict of interest, property got an offer from a developer so landlord pulled out). I am learning quickly not to get attached, but it doesn't make the disappointment any easier to bear. Just got the phone call bearing the bad news of the 4th failed negotiation today.

I wish we could just lock in a location so we can start growing the business! Or at least I can move on to the next lesson in entrepreneurship!

Does anybody have similar experiences they can share? Words of wisdom or words of comfort are also appreciated :)

How Does a Small-Town Business in a Competitive Field Increase Sales?

    Posted: 01 Mar 2018 06:49 PM PST

I manage a Liquor Store in a small town of roughly 2,000 people. There is another liquor store in the area, but it's a much smaller store in a very inconvenient (backroad) location. We guarantee the best prices in the town, in fact if somebody were to bring us a receipt from our competitor showing they have a lower price on an item, we'd match or beat it. We have great service, a clean store, a decent selection, and a very large walk-in freezer full of beer. We have a good reputation in the town.

There are some things that hold us back, for example:

    • Our prices compared to large retailers. Kroger, for example, often sells liquor cheaper than we can buy it from the vendor, because Kroger purchases in mass bulk (thousands of cases at once) where we purchase 1-2 case a week or so.

    • Counties near us are going wet, which means more liquor stores, which means more competition and less sales.

    • It's in a rural, southern community. The facebook page may have a few hundred likes or so. There isn't very much outreach. There isn't even a newspaper.

On the flip side, we are making some profit.

My only idea...Sell more than beer, tobacco, and liquor.

Can someone give me some advice?

    Posted: 01 Mar 2018 03:10 PM PST

    Hi all, hope you're good.

I've recently taken the plunge and started my first business. It's going to be a property rental business within one of the UK's most visited cities.

I've got my site nearing completion by my developers, however, I'm soon to be faced with the daunting task of trying to boost its SEO presence.

I'd love to get any advice on how I can do this affordably, be it if it costs a bit, or ideally, organically. I need to market for hosts first off, to get properties on there, then generate the traffic to get guests to visit after that.

Any 'outside the box' or even obvious ideas are much appreciated. Thanks for your time, and best of luck with your businesses too!

Starting a business that requires a loan of $10,000. Im "pre-approved" for it but its based on a new job that I just got. Whats my chance of approval?

    Posted: 01 Mar 2018 02:44 PM PST

So I got pre-approved at Upstart for a $10,000 at 15.81% APR for 3 years. This is based off my 714 credit score, savings of $2,000, education, and a new job I just got but will start in about a week or two. If I were to apply as soon as I started would I most likely be rejected or approved? I know Id get rejected now because at my current job Im a delivery driver, but at the new job Ill be making $25k a year, after taxes.

I know theres no way of knowing for sure, but I'm asking those who have been in this situation or know from experience.

How to create actionable data to support offering free returns to higher-ups?

    Posted: 01 Mar 2018 02:32 PM PST

I work in a B2C e-retail environment. I've seen first-hand the effects of offering free returns for physical products (especially ones in my industry that you really need to touch/feel/size properly) for customers. It removes all the fear of getting the wrong size and being stuck with the product. We're talking several thousand dollar purchases here.

I've brought up case studies on 10 extremely successful companies that offer free returns, I've mentioned another company in the same space that has had less than 1% return rate with an almost 2-digit increase in sales from this small change, yet they still feel it won't work/ isn't right / is too risky / that people will try to cheat the system.

I'm saving every conversation that I have with someone in a spreadsheet with the estimated dollar value of the sale we lose because they are hesitant to buy sight-unseen. Our company absolutely needs to offer this in order to capture more sales, it is a no-brainer.

Is there a better way I can keep track of this information to make a compelling argument in several months when I bring it up again?

    Thanks

Question: Usurpation of Business Opportunity, or no?

    Posted: 01 Mar 2018 12:40 PM PST

This is a throwaway account. I will be very brief and to the point without sharing specific details that could identify me. I am looking for any advice from those who have been in similar situations or business lawyers who feel like donating a couple of sentences to help a person out. I will hire a lawyer down the road, but before I make too many moves I want some quick outside opinions.

Some years ago I started a business. Over time I sold off shares and took on partners. I am now in a minority owner position (never make this mistake people). The business is thriving and growing, has become a multi million dollar (8 digit) company, and affords me a decent salary with great potential for upside if/when there is an exit. There is, currently, no opportunity for a personal exit from the company. This could change in the next 12-24 months.

In the mean time, I have the opportunity to start another, similar, business. The opportunity is immediate. It is essentially the same business, but in a different market, with a slightly different take on execution that will fit the new market better. This new market is one that the current board has previously expressed disinterest in expanding to. They do not believe in the market. I do.

If it was that simple, I would have them sign a one page agreement allowing me to move forward, but that is not how this board works. As soon as I show them I am willing to risk my own capital and go for it, they might take a second look and decide they do want to do it themselves. I am trying to build a future that I am in control of, and I do not want to bring this board with me.

Would this be a usurpation of business opportunity, or no? What are the risks with moving forward based on the conversations I have had in the past about their lack of interest (not in writing)? This board has a short term memory and could easily "forget" they ever said they weren't interested in the new market if they suddenly saw I had started something there.

    Thoughts? Suggestions?

Need help investing a large sum of money into a new business

    Posted: 01 Mar 2018 11:49 AM PST

    x-post here https://www.reddit.com/r/advancedentrepreneur/comments/8187hg/need_help_investing_a_large_sum_of_money_into_a/

Hi r/smallbusiness, I need your help!

Throwaway here and keeping some details vague because I don't want to out myself. I need some help investing some money into a new business and would really appreciate any ideas and advice you can give me.

    A little background first:

I am living in South America based in a capital city, I'm married and have small children. Our family owns a consulting business (my spouse and I are not the owners but my father in law is), this business is dependant on a small number of big clients. This business currently pays our monthly wages and will do so for the future.

We will be receiving a large sum of money in the next months (> 1 million USD) and are looking to diversify into a different kind of business.

    We see two different approaches:

    • Invest in one big business.
    • Invest in one small business, if it succeeds keep investing in expanding it, if it fails try another one.

My gut tells me the second approach is better but the investment will take longer to yield results since most of it would be parked on the bank at first.

We have the following concrete ideas until now:

    Big Investment

    • Buy or build a small hotel or hostal for backpackers
    • Invest in gas stations, either in the city or along a well transited highway
    • Buying some property and renting it. Return is probably not amazing but it is a low effort investment

    Small Investment

    • A retail store. We really like the retail sector although it seems to be fairly competitive. Additionally we would have to decide if trying to create a store from scratch or finding a good franchise. Most franchises seem to require some previous retail experience, we don't have direct retail experience, maybe we could get a partner or senior manager with experience?
    • An online shop. The online market is really underdeveloped here and delivering only to the big capital city reduces a lot of the logistical problems involved in having a terrible postal service and really expensive courier services. Deciding what exactly to sell would obviously be very important
    • A "startup". Basically copying some proven startup idea from USA or Europe and applying it here. We would need a technical partner but there is a growing startup scene here. Alternatively just investing in a local startup but for the money we have available it is probably too risky.

Right now we are trying to find ideas we can develop into business plans for when the money comes. Do you have any other ideas? What problems do you see with the ideas we have right now?

Thanks for reading this post and I appreciate the help.

Is it important to white label or customize the content tool to show your logo rather than the software's logo itself?

    Posted: 01 Mar 2018 11:03 AM PST

If you are using content software to create blogs, quizzes, or surveys is it better to customize the content to remove any logo that belongs to the tool. For example, if I use a survey using surveymonkey is it bad to have the "powered by surveymonkey" logo appear for users to see? I ask because alot of these software tools have free versions but the paid versions give you the ability to white label, so I was wondering if it was worth it?

How do Entrepreneurial Businesses Harness Change?

    Posted: 01 Mar 2018 09:18 AM PST

There is a basic principle of change management that applies to both large and small companies – some people will embrace change while others will resist it. When faced with change, small business owners have the added pressure of having limited resources which means that making good decisions about investing in change is critical. There is not much room to make poor strategic decisions when managing any small business, let alone when purposefully making a change within the company. Quite often, change management in small businesses is unsuccessful because there is a lack of communication and follow through with a change management plan, according to Robert Half, a specialized staffing firm. There are several tips that will help small businesses harness change so that they can get a competitive advantage in their market. Where to find someone to work and invest/partner?

    Posted: 01 Mar 2018 05:10 AM PST

I own an online shop; going on my third year and forecasts look really good for finishing 2018 with a net profit. A very small profit, but that's better than minus signs! I'm very sure that I could do better if I had a talented marketing person working with me. That's been the one role in the company that I am weakest at and haven't been able to do well. (I've been running the business alone with no trouble, except struggling with marketing.)

I can get a business loan for operating expenses and use it to pay a salary for a marketing person, plus a marketing budget. But I'd like to continue to be debt-free if possible (and realistic). Someone on another forum suggested that since I've been running my shop for two years already and have an established track record that I might be able to successfully attract someone to fill the marketing role and also invest in the company. What I'm not sure about is where would I find someone like that?

In my area, all of the small business incubators and assistance programs are tailored toward high tech companies and government contracting. I very definitely want someone with experience in retail, and ideally online retail. Thoughts?
