Geico quoted me $850/month for car insurance. Insurance

Geico quoted me $850/month for car insurance.

    Posted: 28 Feb 2018 09:46 AM PST

So I'm about to buy a 2011 Lexus RX 350. I'm a 19y/o male with a new license (although I did have a license from my home country but geico is not considering that). My father havent got his license yet so for now the insurance will be under my name. I do not have a social security yet (i applied so its under process). Now with all that in mind, geico gave me a quote of $850 PER MONTH. Can someone explain to me why is that? Is it because I have no social security? I have heard new drivers have insurance price way lower than what they are quoting me. My location is MD but my license and car registration is/will be under the state department (if that makes any difference).

Edit: Thank you all for helping me understand! I have decided to put the deal away and probably look into some other car (or wait until my father transfers his license so the insurance can be under his name).

    Classic Car as Daily Driver

    Posted: 28 Feb 2018 09:46 PM PST

Looking at buying my Chevelle back from my parents. Just a Malibu but it's been painted, interior done, engine rebuild, trans rebuilt, etc. It has been appraised for $22,000.

I want to drive it daily but there is a dilemma:

    Use classic car insurance.

Pros -cheap -covers car for appraised amount Cons -mileage limit -has to be garaged

    Use standard insurance

Pros -no mileage limit -can park and drive it anywhere Cons -not covered for appraised value

Why is there this rule? I can buy a $50k brand new car and park it anywhere, do anything and it's covered. If I have it appraised for a certain value I feel I should be able to do the same things as if it was a new car.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Want to let this thing rip on the daily.

The company I work for passes an inflated price onto residents for an Umbrella Liability Policy - is this illegal?

    Posted: 28 Feb 2018 11:42 AM PST

The company I work for has an Umbrella Liability Policy made uniquely for our professional residents in our building covering possible incidents. It's a $7,000,000 Policy that includes both professional and general liability coverage.

My concern is that, although I do not know the exact premium, I cannot imagine it is more than $20,000 to cover all residents. The company charges each resident an annual fee of $150 if they want coverage (even though they are already covered as residents of our building). We have about 600 residents which equates to $90,000 each year.

I want to be sure that I am not serving as a broker by advertising the policy that is already in place and I want to make sure the company isn't cutting corners.

    Please advise.

Edit: Management has been telling us not to share COI's to the businesses paying the fee due to it not having their name on it and generically stating it covers whoever is in the building.

Also - I understand I may not have all information necessary, however the entire situation feels fishy and I do not want to get caught up in a scandal.

How am I 15% liable in a car accident if a vehicle admitted he changed lanes into me on an off ramp which he had a yield sign?

    Posted: 28 Feb 2018 03:37 PM PST

So last week I was involved in a car accident where a vehicle was coming off an off ramp and attempted to yield by changing lanes, but need up side swiping into me. He admits in the report that he attempted to change lanes which lead to the accident. We weren't going fast either, no more than 20mph.

We both have the same insurance company so we have separate claims people that we're dealing with. After we both gave our statements to the claims people, they determined that the other driver is 85% at fault and I'm 15% at fault. I asked why am I being deemed 15% and the claims person said that I should have seen the vehicle since it was next to me. I told them yes I did see it, and it was in the off ramp and should have stayed put to yield, but instead came into my lane and then the accident occurred. I couldn't swerve out of the way as there was a car to the right of me, and I did brake as soon as I could. To put it simple, there was nothing I could do to avoid impact.

Now my questions are: 1) Why the hell am I being held 15% at fault? 2) What are my options to avoid being held 15% at fault?

I feel like this is some scheme from the insurance company to hold me partially liable so they can use it as leverage increase rates on me. I've been driving for almost 20 years and never had an accident or a traffic/moving violation/ticket of any kind; and this is while driving in NYC where I have avoided almost 100+ accidents in almost 20 years of driving that would've been other persons fault.

This is ridiculous, it really is. Now I can understand why people can't stand insurance companies and how they low ball people and don't play fair.

American Family Insurance giving me a hard time over rental car because I’m under 25

    Posted: 28 Feb 2018 08:06 PM PST

So I got into a car accident. Not my fault. I live in Illinois. The other driver filed the claim through her insurance, American Family. They admitted 100% fault and I am taking my car to the shop next week. Estimated 2 weeks to repair.

The only problem is the rental. The adjuster insists on me having a parent rent the car and I drive my parent car. But thats not really an option because my dad needs his truck to move equipment around. And I doubt they will rent a truck for me since I have a chevy cruze. Also my mom doesn't drive.

What are my options? Can i ask them to pay the underage renter fee? I don't see how its my responsibility to pay that fee as I am the victim in this situation. Or can I ask them to write me a check for the money that would have been spent on my rental? That way I can use that money to figure out my own way of getting around.... any advice is appreciated.

    Whole Life Insurance

    Posted: 28 Feb 2018 06:56 PM PST

My mother passed away this past Saturday. Per my father (ex husband) the insurance policy she references in the will she had done 10 years ago was a whole life policy she started in the late 1980's. For numerous reasons that aren't necessary I believe that she hasn't been paying into it for maybe the last 5-6 years (she had financial troubles that I was aware of).

My question is did she lose the policy? It is my understanding that whole life polices retain a cash value from paying into it.

I just want some idea of what I may be getting into trying to sort everything out and putting the pieces together.

    Thanks!

    What happens now?

    Posted: 28 Feb 2018 05:51 PM PST

Im 21 F and I got into an accident on the interstate. I rear ended another car so I know I'm at fault. This is my 2nd accident (1st one in may of last year with 50% at fault) and my new car has damages. We both filed a claim through State Farm and the other driver is claiming bodily injury. I'm on my parents insurance and I think that covers up to $50k. My parents are worried the other driver (who's older) will use the accident as an excuse to get more insurance money. I'm sure premiums will rise but I'm more worried that I'll be kicked off the policy or it won't be renewed for having this many at fault accidents in less than 5 years. My parents also didn't sign up for rental car insurance/road side assistance since this was a new car so I'm not sure what to do when I take it to the body shop since I have to work and my dad takes the other car.

    Any help would be nice

California Homeowner's Insurance Coverage Question - Glass

    Posted: 28 Feb 2018 05:27 PM PST

I have a floor-to-ceiling pane of glass that just cracked. I don't know whether the cause is settlement of the house, manufacturing defect (the glass is 10+ years old), a rock, or something undefinable. Is there anything I should know when contacting my insurance company about this? The glass will be expensive to replace.

Are there particular coverage exclusions in California that might apply?

    Thanks in advance Reddit!

Collectors want 700% more for my med. bill than my original bill from insurance, how to solve this?

    Posted: 28 Feb 2018 07:29 AM PST

Long story short, I'm unemployed + on my parents insurance and was unable to pay for an emergency room bill. The bill is of $100 w/ insurance and it ended up going into an account after not being able to pay it for so long. Today, I received a bill from the company, PMAB, LLC. I read up on the reviews and it turns out these guys are fishing people out of money that they shouldn't be paying most of the time or don't care about their mistakes. Now they are trying to do the same thing to me. My bill went from $100 to $719! That's obviously not right. How should I dispute this? I'm very new to the world of insurance and things like that.

[California] Auto Insurance Appraisal For Repair

    Posted: 28 Feb 2018 02:39 PM PST

I caught the hit and runner that hit my car. Luckily, the other party's insurance accepted full liability and now it's time for me to get the damage appraisal from the shop. I asked the other party's insurance if I'm required to go to one of their certified shops and they confirmed that Yes, I must go to one of their shops.

My girlfriend told me this isn't true because she went to her own shop to get her car appraised when she was involved in a no-fault accident.

NOTE: that I am NOT trying to get my car fixed. Its a minor damage that I'd rather just take a check for.

Is the other party's insurance trying to short me or can I go to any shop I want for an appraisal?

    Thanks in advanced.

First car accident - Very minor damages, not sure how to handle or what to expect?

    Posted: 28 Feb 2018 02:25 PM PST

I live in Columbus, OH with Statefarm car insurance. I have a 2011 2-door Honda Civic and pay ~$630 every six months in car insurance.

On February 14th around 10pm, I got into a minor car accident on the highway. It was dark and rainy and I was in the left-most lane, merging right to the middle lane. I checked my mirrors, looked over my shoulder, and used my blinker. I was driving the speed limit because of the visibility. In the time it took for me to merge, a car in the right-most lane merged to the middle lane and gunned it to avoid me. As a result, I ended up merging into him. Our cars made brief contact (my front passenger wheel well, his drive side back wheel well). I obviously pulled away and then pulled over.

As stated, this was my first car accident and I was already having a poor Valentine's Day. I (23F) was crying as we waited for the police to arrive. I had no passengers, nor did he. Damage to my car was entirely minimal, barely a dent to the point where it's not worth taking it in. His car had very comparable damage - a bit of a dent above the wheel well, but that was all.

Police come, write up an accident report (which I do not have access to yet, it's not in their system) and I get a ticket for failure to drive within marked lanes. I exchange insurance info with the other party, but he takes me aside and says he thinks it may be best for me not to go through insurance, that he'll check out the damage and be in touch. I did not contact my insurance at the advice of family.

Yesterday (2/27) I get notified that a claim has been filed. The other party contacted my insurance. Statefarm called and asked for a general summary of what happened, and I gave them the gist of the situation. Today, they called and said they spoke with the other party and he had a different story. I gave my recorded statement (basically what is above, a bit more details on the road conditions and me checking before merging). They told me they would get a statement from him and then be in touch.

Basically, I just need to know what to expect from here on out? I figure I'll be found liable, which I completely understand, it's just frustrating. Especially since the other party told me he'd contact me instead of going with insurance, and like I said, the damage was definitely minimal. I believe my deductible is $500, which isn't great because I am a graduate student with minimal income, but I'll figure out.

Also, what to expect from my insurance rates? Previous to this someone had already told me that $630 for 6 months with my car seemed high, and I used the Geico calculator (and included an at-fault accident in the past 6 months) for a quote and it put it at like, $400 a month. Is that something I should consider switching into when my Statefarm deal is up?

Thank you in advance for taking time to read this, and any advice you may have! I appreciate it!

    USAA Rolex Replacement Program [TX]

    Posted: 28 Feb 2018 02:18 PM PST

Hey guys, my two liner 14060m got stolen this weekend... Luckily I did have it specifically insured with USAA. They are working on my claim and mentioned that they have a program to replace the watch through Rolex. Has anyone worked with them before? I find it hard to imagine they can replace a reference that isn't being made anymore.

They said that I can reject the replacement offer and get a check if I'd like, but it looks like 14060ms have increased dramatically since I bought mine last February. I paid $4,700 from a local shop, and now I can't find one for less than $6,000! I insured the watch for $5,200 since at the time I could find numerous good examples listed for $5k and figured the $200 would give me wiggle room until it was time for another appraisal.

I'm just sick looking at the prices right now. I've found more listed at over the MSRP of a 114060 than under. I really hope that they are able to replace it, I think I'm going to take a loss if I have to source one myself.

    Insurance and cancer

    Posted: 28 Feb 2018 04:34 AM PST

Hi Reddit! My mother in law recently got diagnosed with cancer. We're currently on Medicaid and staying at the hospital, and because of that, all the bills for our stay there are covered. We are looking at a specific cancer center that does not accept our insurance. We could switch the Medicaid plans, but then we are afraid of losing the benefits we get now, and if the hospital bill is covered. We also cannot exactly wait for April 1, for any other insurance to be activated since cancer is at its later stages. Then comes the next question of how much does insurance actually cover for cancer? If you guys have any suggestions as to how to go about this, please help.

Girlfriend getting screwed by Hit and Run

    Posted: 28 Feb 2018 07:07 AM PST

Girlfriend got hit and run on the highway, and caught the license plate of the Red Hyundai that hit her Grey Mazda. She filed a police report, had to go in to identify the suspect through photos, got it right, and they issued a warrant for her arrest.

BUT, insurance doesn't care. She has Progressive, suspect has USAA. USAA asked suspect for pictures (which she provided), and said that they didn't match up and ruled no liability. We challenged it, and a whole month and a half after the incident, USAA finally sent a human to both the Mazda and the Hyundai. Took the red paint sample from the Mazda, went to match it with the Hyundai, and said it matched up with a Chevy (not a Hyundai).

We are 1000000% sure that this Hyundai hit and ran her. Progressive has done absolutely nothing except tell us that Word vs Word we won't win, and they haven't even come out to look at our damages or the suspect's damages. It's extremely upsetting that this expensive service (insurance) is doing practically NOTHING to help, despite significant evidence. So now the arbitrator has to just take USAA's word since they actually went out and did something? Why is Progressive being so lazy in their help? How could the paint come from a chevy? It all makes no sense.

    Adding Non-Spouse/Non-Citizen to Health Insurance

    Posted: 28 Feb 2018 06:35 AM PST

Is it possible to add my girlfriend (who is a Canadian citizen) to my health care policy that I am currently enrolled through my work? We are not yet married and she will be in the USA on a visa.

If not, what is her best bet for obtaining medical coverage?

Car was stolen and in accidents with parked cars, then abandoned. Police say they are investigating me, lawyer says don't talk to the insurance company, who is threatening denial of coverage...

    Posted: 28 Feb 2018 11:29 AM PST

Long story short, car was stolen and in involved in accidents with parked cars, then abandoned. Police say they are investigating me. Claims have already been against my (liability only) insurance. I got an attorney to protect myself, who tells me that I shouldn't speak to the insurance company at all until the investigation is complete. It's been almost a month since the incident. The attorney heard back from the claims investigator this morning, who very angrily told him that they will refuse coverage unless I comply with their investigation. Since I have liability only and the vehicle was stolen, I feel like my insurance won't cover the damage to other vehicles anyway, so why bother talking to the insurance agent anyway? In reading the contract, my policy appears to cover me, the driver, not the vehicle. I feel like the attorney must know best, they are an insurance and criminal charges specialist. Does anyone know if the insurance company would cover the damages, even if I talk to them? If not, then why bother? Thanks everyone for your help.

Will insurance rates increase again after an updated injury claim?

    Posted: 28 Feb 2018 10:05 AM PST

A bit of history: Last summer my girlfriend was driving us around town and rear ended a truck. The collision totaled her car and resulted in me injuring my knee. My knee hurt but it was manageable. I got an MRI on my injured knee and a torn meniscus was shown as well as varicose veins. The doctor told me as long as the pain isn't too bad I could walk on it fine. Allstate said they would cover my medical bills, so I moved on expecting hem to settle within the proceeding few months. Fast forward 7 months and still no settlement from Allstate and my knee is getting worse to the point it hurts to walk regardless the amount of walking I do. So naturally I go and get both problems fixed as they aren't going to get better. Since Allstate has waited so long I am going to claim the surgery from the accident. Allstate has already raised my girlfriends insurance premium rates. My question is will they increase her rates again now knowing they have to pay for my surgery and time missed from work? Also what options do I have since Allstate has taken so long to handle what would normally take less than 3 months. Thank you!

Buying my own vehicle and need off my parent's insurance (OH)

    Posted: 28 Feb 2018 09:00 AM PST

Hello everyone! First time posting here. My dad purchased a car for me to use about 10 years ago. I've been driving it since and it has remained in his name and on his insurance, with me just paying him for the insurance. I've never had my own policy. I am looking into buying a used car in the next month or so and I am wondering how to get my own car insurance. I checked into a couple policies and haven't quite decided but what I really want to know is how do I leave the lot with insurance? Do I put it on my dad's car and switch it as soon as I buy the other one? Can I just get it the same day the car is purchased? Thank you!

tldr: buying a car, need to make sure I have insurance when I leave the lot

Purchased an Investment Plan from Manulife (Singapore)

    Posted: 28 Feb 2018 08:35 AM PST

My first post here. I[27,F, Singapore, single] have been going on back and forth to have a good retirement plan sorted out, and getting a financial advisor. However, I am a junior in my career and my salary is ok-ish to have an independent financial advisor handling my "wealth".

So yesterday, i had been convinced for a product from Manulife called InvestReady. The thing is, when i reread the product's BI, the first two years premium are essentially gone (effects of deduction) and starting from the 3rd year, the charges essentially goes down to <2% + management charge for the respective fun in my investment portfolio.

This product is an investment only insurance policy, and it caters to my risk appetite, which at the start now, the distribution is 80% equity, and %20 bond with unlimited fund switches and minimum monthly rebalancing.

Additionals; paying sgd$1000 monthly premium, for a period of 20 years, with freeze period of 36 times (each month) a.k.a. holiday from paying the monthly premium.

I understand that i may be better off learning how to trade. However, for a layman like me who is busy with work, is this a good plan at the end? Hope to get some insights. :)

Where do I begin to look for life insurance?

    Posted: 28 Feb 2018 05:38 AM PST

Good morning! I would greatly appreciate any insight you find people have about life insurance.

My husband and I have a one year old boy. We are looking at getting a $500,000 life insurance policy on each of us.

It's overwhelming looking at all the companies that offer life insurance. I'm not exactly sure where to begin. So here are my questions.

    1) What should we be looking for in a life insurance policy?

    2) What should we be looking for in a insurance company?

    3) What are some red flags we should be aware of?

Thank you in advance for all of your help and insight!!!

    Bare minimum homeowners insurance.

    Posted: 28 Feb 2018 10:57 AM PST

    Hello everyone,

I need to get $50,000 worth of homeowners insurance to satisfy my bank mortgage. My insurance company is for full replacement of $300,000 and the premium is ridiculous ($800 a year). I called them and they will not go down to $50,000. Is there any insurance company that will do what I want without a lot of hassle (inspections, extra costs, inspections, appraisals, etc)? I have > 800 credit score and never claimed against any insurance in my life.
