[Australia] Got a $900 claim against me for the smallest damage I've ever seen. Is this legit? How can I fight this?

    Hey friends :)

About 5 months ago my partner backed up into a guys car whilst parking. She was going so slowly and managed to this much damage.

Today we got a letter from the guys insurance agency telling us he was making a claim for $900 to repair the number plate and bumper bar. This is a large amount of money for us and I want to know if there is any recourse because it doesn't seem fair. My partner says there was no chance that there could be any damage to the bumper bar behind the number plate.

We have the guys contact number but he is not really a reasonable person, especially towards women it seems, and he doesn't speak fluent english so it's hard to communicate properly. We offered to pay for a replacement numberplate which is less than $40 and I don't understand why he didn't accept that.

    What do, reddit?

MASSIVE insurance spike with job change (£1300 to £6000!)

    Posted: 27 Mar 2018 02:32 AM PDT

I'm in the closing stages of a new job offer. I'd be working as a junior engineer at a company which sets up editing systems for video productions - an amazing career move for me, but unfortunately, I will need to commute quite a distance.

If I commute, inquiries about updating my policy from: Social only, of 5k miles to Social and Commuting, 15k miles, adds over £4,500 to my insurance! Even if I were to relocate and not commute, simply updating my job title ALONE adds £3,500 to my policy! This appears to be because they classify editing/broadcasting tech as the 'entertainment industry', and assume I'll be blasting my Maserati through Soho with Scarlett Johanson in the backseat.

This is an entry-level position with a low salary, and it is simply impossible for me to make ends meet without resolving this. I also already paid annually for my current policy. What are my options here? I could classify the company as 'Information Technology' (which it technically is), bringing it down to £2.5k, though I don't know how close to the line that is in the event of an accident. Any advice from people who've had a similar issue would be a Godsend!

edit: Just to add, I'm also worried about calling them up and discussing this. In particular that they will lock me out of options and note that I need to pay them for this exact job title, and that future information I give is invalid. Perhaps I'm being paranoid, but I've heard how awful insurance companies are.

    Policy Recommendations for 2018 vehicle

    Posted: 26 Mar 2018 05:10 PM PDT

I just purchased a 2018 Subaru Legacy... What should I be looking into for insurance? I want to be covered... but not pay more than I have too.

Such as: How much should I coverage should I have on.. Bodily Injury Property Damage Unins. Bodily injury Underins. Bodily injury Comprehensive Collision

I was thinking of 750 for Comp and Collision... I live in California and do not have much in my name. Just do not want to break the bank for coverage.

Can I buy just general liability insurance?

    Posted: 26 Mar 2018 02:39 PM PDT

I don't have a car, home, or business, but want to protect myself for any what if. Is there such a policy or insurance out there? I'm in the US.

[Kentucky] My brother totaled his vehicle and damaged two others. Still owes 23k on the car but doesn’t have full coverage and did not designate lender as loss payee.

    Posted: 26 Mar 2018 06:04 AM PDT

So my brother lives in Kentucky and was driving a near-new vehicle when he allegedly ran a red light and totaled his vehicle, another vehicle and damaged a third. He financed his car through the dealer and purchased GAP insurance. He has had it for 4 months and owners about 23k on it. The lien requires that he keep full coverage on the car and at the time he purchased the car his current insurance had full coverage. He switched insurance companies online with one of the larger advertised carriers but didn't realize he didn't add collision and only has liability. Further, when he got his new insurance he did not designate the lender as a loss payee. The accident happened within the past week and there is an open claim with his carrier but they still don't know that his car is financed. Listening to the adjuster it is likely he will be assigned 100% of fault. He's obviously distraught over the damage he's cause and frustrated at himself for not realizing the particulars of purchasing his new insurance. I haven't the slightest clue how to move forward with helping him and advice would be appreciated.

Edit: Thank you everyone for your thoughts and insights. Extremely helpful information and I appreciate everyone's time explaining the particulars.

Jewelry not covered due to "wear and tear"

    Posted: 26 Mar 2018 06:14 PM PDT

Hopefully someone here can give me some guidance. I will start by saying I am extremely frustrated. My wife's engagement ring has been insured by what used to be my favorite insurance/financial company for 9.5 years. A few months back, I found her diamond on the floor of our kitchen. No problem, we are insured! I contacted the insurance company and was told I needed a repair estimate. I returned the ring to the original jeweler that built it for an estimate. There was some concern over re-making the same design, since the diamond fell out (this probably didn't help the situation). Insurance has decided to deny my claim due to "wear and tear". Apparently, everything requires upkeep, even a ring that is meant to be worn. The ring had gone back to the jeweler a couple of times for tightening/cleaning, though it has been a bit. Now I am in a situation where I've been paying for personal property insurance for an engagement ring that apparently didn't cover one of the biggest concerns. Had I lost the ring or the diamond, I would have had coverage. Since I found it, shame on me and I'm out of luck. At this rate (and in this instance) I wish I didn't have insurance and could have saved the money to now have to pay out of pocket for repair (basically recasting the ring). After the denial I requested an appeal to be told that no official appeal exists. They offered to have me send the ring to their independent gemologists for review. They explained this was my only option. That report has now come back and since there was no large sign of trauma/damage (it was wear and tear, not a hit), they are again denying coverage.

Help? Do I have any options or am I stuck paying for this out of pocket? I understand the concept of wear and tear, but wear and tear on a ring that's meant to be worn. I wish the ring had gotten lost, not had a diamond fall out. Thanks!

tldr: Diamond fell out of engagement ring, insurance denying personal property claim due to wear and tear.

Teen son damaged car, should I make a claim?

    Posted: 26 Mar 2018 12:38 PM PDT

My new driver teen son drove the car into a fence post in a parking lot. My wife was actually right behind him and said he wasn't going very fast but just veered a bit and hit it.

There is some body damage but the big thing is the steering rods on one wheel broke and it will cost over $3k for that part alone, over $8k total. The car is only worth about $7k.

So my question is if I were to claim this on the insurance would he become uninsurable? If not, would the increase in premium cost more in the end than just scrapping the car and moving on?

I just want to make sure that the whole families insurance does become totally unaffordable. Any advice would be appreciated.

    Can I fight this?

    Posted: 26 Mar 2018 10:54 AM PDT

2 years ago (2016) I got into a small fender bender (it was partially the other guys fault, he braked on the freeway (70 mph). I had enough space between our two cars so fortunately his car only had a small paint scratch about the size of a centimeter. I took pictures and let my insurance company know and today I received notice that he just now filed a claim and now they want me to pay 1000 dollars. Is he even allowed to file a claim 2 years later? And for something so small? I also explained to my insurance the guy basically braked in the middle of the highway going 70 miles per hour. I wasn't close to him at all either at least 2 cars space. Is there any way to fight this?

[Ontario, CAN] My car insurance ran out 5 days ago. I haven't driven since then but will I be penalized for letting it run out when I sign up with a new company?

    Posted: 26 Mar 2018 07:29 PM PDT

I was insured with a company for a year. My insurance ran out March 21. Normally, it would renew automatically but I got a ticket during my term that made it impossible for me to continue with that particular company. I called a new broker earlier this month and got a quote for a new company and decided to go with that company. I was waiting to sign up with the new broker and I got sick and forgot about it. My insurance ran out on March 21 and I currently have no insurance. I have NOT driven uninsured and I would never. I am wondering, when I call the broker back, will I have issues with the fact that I have been uninsured for a week? Will they refuse to insure me because of this?

Thank you in advance for replies. Any advice is appreciated.

Short Term Disability advice - a company that underwrites policies

    Posted: 26 Mar 2018 11:34 AM PDT

My wife was recently declined for short term disability from State Farm because she had been prescribed a narcotic in the past 5 years. This seems ridiculous, considering all the things narcotics are prescribed for now. The agent that we were working with told us that we would need to find a company that doesn't do quick screening of prescription database but actually goes through the underwriting process so we can offer explanations on the prescriptions. Does anyone know of a company that would work for us? She makes $60k annually and wants short term coverage in case of another maternity leave or anything else that might pop up. 60% coverage after a few weeks would work out well for us I believe.

Permit vs Class E for auto insurance

    Posted: 26 Mar 2018 10:41 AM PDT

I'm lost when it comes to auto insurance. I was messing around with Progressive quotes and I noticed that i was able to click that my license status was a permit. It got me thinking that I've had my physical permit since 2016, then got my license in 2018.

Whenever I look at auto quotes I use the date I got my class E license instead of my permit license. This causes my insurance to spike. I've also had my permit in another state back in 2009 but i never did much with it. Is it legal to say I've had a license since 2016 or 2009?

    Secondary driver?

    Posted: 26 Mar 2018 05:21 PM PDT

Hey y'all, I recently moved to the outskirts of Atlanta from the slightly less outskirts of Atlanta. I drive a 2013 Scion XD fully paid off and my current rate is 85 a month full coverage through Geico.

My partner and I live together, and due to the increased distance from both of our jobs (14 miles for me and 8 for him), as well as a change in my hours, we are finding that it makes more sense for him to drop me off and take my car sometimes, where this was not an option for us before. Do I need to add him as a secondary driver? Will it significantly impact my rate? I should add that although he has a clean driving record, he was without a car and license for 9 years (expired in 2009 since he lived in an area with much better options for public transportation so didn't feel the need to renew).

Thanks in advance for any info. 😊

Edit he does have a current GA license. Thanks again!

When does your driving record start?

    Posted: 26 Mar 2018 10:59 AM PDT

I figure you'd guys know better than anyone else. When looking at some quotes, some asked for Driving Experience vs First Licensed

I asked because I've actually had my Learners Permit for 4 years (personal issues) before actually getting my DL in PA in 2016? So what would that count as? 6 or 2?

Had my first accident, how do I prevent my premium to soar up?

    Posted: 26 Mar 2018 04:12 PM PDT

I'm 28 years old living in California insured through GEICO. Had my first at fault accident in a parking lot, no bodily injury, no damage to the car, the property damage payout has been $5000.

Now GEICO wants to increase my premium by 75% !

Is there anything I can do so that the premium bump is not that high?

Dental insurance is expiring next week, and I want braces. Could I go tomorrow and pay everything not covered in cash before the insurance expires?

Left my job and my insurance expires on 4/1. Could I go to the dental office tomorrow and pay for all my out of pocket expenses for braces before my insurance expires instead of monthly payments? I haven't gotten a consultation or anything yet if that matters.

[Kentucky] Need help finding cheaper insurance without getting screwed over

    Posted: 26 Mar 2018 03:08 PM PDT

    Hi all,

    Background
Single income source family of three. I need help finding insurance since I make ever so slightly too much for her to be on government insurance (~$500 too much/yr). I'm currently paying ~$350/month ($255 health, $32 Dental, $5 Vision) for both me and my wife using insurance from work. I've never shopped around for insurance however money is extremely tight as of her losing her government coverage and I would like some help.

    Current Coverage
According to my work I'm in a HDHP for health, DHMO for Dental and VSP for Vision whatever those mean. I honestly don't know my coverages but I know according to my benefits card a lot of things require "Pre-Certification" as well as I own up to 40% of the bill after deductible or something along those lines (Ded., then 40%). I also have a HSA through PNC but I have no clue how to use it or what I did with the card (if I even got one?).

    What I need
I'm looking for something that'll cover emergency room visits in case my wife has an allergic reaction to milk, epipens, inhalers and whatever the heck the nebulizer uses coverage. I personally don't really need anything as I don't really schedule appointments anyway other than the current fact I do need cavities filled or worse (haven't had an appointment) and teeth cleaning.

    Summary
Any and all help would be appreciated, there's so many different terms and types of coverage. I've done my best in other insurances (went from $525 liability only to $160 for full coverage :D) but health coverage seems to be a different beast entirely. Once again thank you for reading this post and considering.

    Car Accident Physiotherapy

    Posted: 26 Mar 2018 01:41 PM PDT

I was in an accident and have been attending physiotherapy. The clinic as well as my insurance rep say that they must use my work benefits before they use money from insurance. Is this correct? What if I get an injury from working out, wouldn't I be screwed then? I was not at fault and live in Ontario.

    Thanks for any info.

Who is at fault? (CAR ACCIDENT)

    Posted: 26 Mar 2018 09:54 AM PDT

This happened about 3 days ago. I have Progressive Northern Insurance and have yet to call them because I don't know what I should and shouldn't say. The accident occurred in South Carolina.

    Around 5:30, I rear-ended a car in front of this area: https://www.google.com/maps/@34.0222601,-80.9471809,3a,75y,269.38h,71.56t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1s3Y1qQEVHY5TZobtqOGqmfw!2e0!7i13312!8i6656

The area is located right off of the exit ramp as we stayed on the right side of the exit ramp because we wanted to get on the dedicated right turn lane at the end of the exit ramp. This dedicated right turn lane at the end of the exit ramp was continuous for about 600 feet until it reached the intersection down the road which only allowed right turns unless you merge into the left lanes. Therefore, I believed the car in front of me was going to drive down the continuous dedicated right turn lane until they were safe to merge onto the left lane. Once the car in front of me and I both entered the dedicated right turning lane, I took a quick glance out my driver's side window to check for incoming traffic in order to determine if I can merge into the left lane soon. However, right as I turn back from the glance, the car in front of me apparently came to a complete and sudden stop at the end of the dedicated right turning lane rather than continuing down the continuous lane causing me to rear-end the car. I was driving about 10-20 mph at the dedicated right turning lane when I made the glance; whereas the car in front of me decided to stop and wait for an opening into the left lane instead of simply riding down the continuous lane.

I was charged with speeding which only took 2 points off my license. The officer told me he could have charged me with following to close to the car (4 points); however, he decided to give me speeding instead. I believed I was following the car at a proper distance until the car decided to come to a complete stop when I took the glance. However, the other party did not receive any penalty. I understand that I was partially at fault for taking my eyes off the car in front of me and checking the left lane when there was still another car in front of me. However, I believe the other party should also be partially at fault for coming to complete stop and starting to initiate a turn into the left lane at the start of the continuous road.

TLDR: Rear ended a car coming off of exit ramp's dedicated right turn lane when I decided to take a glance out my window to check for incoming left lane traffic. The dedicated right turn lane was also a continuous road so the other party driver could have continued down the road and made a turn when possible, but instead, they decided to come to a complete stop when I made the quick glance, resulting in the rear ending of their car.

What order should i do this to get commercial auto insurance?

    Posted: 26 Mar 2018 01:22 PM PDT

I'm going to keep this short Basically I need to figure out how to get commercial drivers insurance so I can do a short pizza delivery gig, to do thaty dad says I need to get the car transferred from him to me, and get my own insurance

So I'm thinking the order I should attempt this is

    1. Sign up for personal auto insurance
    2. Get the transfer done 3.take on any remaining finances
    3. Apply for the commercial insurance
    4. Not crash ever

I'm sure I'm missing a ton of steps but I'm really out of it trying to unclutter my thoughts. What do you guys think, am I missing anything, should I even do this? I really appreciate any help

Edit: is this even worth it with a delivery drivers salary? I feel like if I even went for insurance I'd be screwing myself

Also, I looked at BCBS MA website to see what was available, all they're offering me are HMOs, I prefer PPO. Why is that?

Total Loss Collision on 2015 Mazda 3 Car

I just got into a total loss collision in my 2015 Mazda 3 sedan. The adjuster informed me that I would get $13,000. I still have $9,000 to pay off of my car. Is $13,000 a fair adjustment? There were no interior or exterior damages before the crash.

[Pennsylvania] I am a 30 year old with excellent credit and no accidents looking to ensure a car that I will rarely drive. However, I am getting insurance quotes over $200 a month. Any ideas why/how to get something more reasonable?

    Posted: 26 Mar 2018 07:43 AM PDT

Demographics: 30 year old male with no accidents and excellent credit, living in PA. I bike to work, but would like a car for weekend trips (5000 miles a year). I am regularly getting quotes in the $200 a month range for a 2015 Mazda 3. If a lower all the coverage options, that usually only brings it down to the $170 range. This seems really excessive to me. I think as a teenager I only paid $160...

Any suggestions for why I might be seeing these sorts of rates, and what I might be able to do to lower them?

    Thanks!

Opinions on Petersen International Underwriters health insurance ?

    Posted: 26 Mar 2018 07:13 AM PDT

I am healthy young adult with no pre existing conditions, I had tri care for a long period of time then in the past year switched to the affordable care act and had optima. Then the prices for 2018 were gonna basically double it went up to around 385 dollars a month and at this point in time that was way too much. After talking to a few people I ended up getting a short term policy with Petersen International Underwriters for 200 a month. It is a $500 deductible with 1,000,000 benefits , coverage individual , carrier is Lloyds of London. Right now it does not qualify for the government health insurance. I did some research and feel that I would have good coverage if something happened and can go to where ever I want for providers. The only thing that I am worried about is getting the tax penalty I do not really know how that whole situation will work yet because I have only had it for a few months. I do not know how much it would cost monthly if I added on the tax penalty but even then I feel like the short term policy is better bc of the low deductible. I am just looking for advice on the matter to make sure I am not missing something.

LPT: Owners of new and Luxury Vehicles! If your car is involved in an accident, and the other insurance is accepting liability, after the repairs are completed, don't forget to file a "Diminished Value Claim"! Your vehicle will lose much of its resale value with an accident on record.

    Posted: 26 Mar 2018 04:50 PM PDT

The 3rd party Insurance you file the claim with will never tell you about this unless you bring it to them. You can get paid back for (or a portion of) what your vehicle loses when putting an accident on the vehicle history report!

Vehicles deemed a total loss cannot file for diminished value

Here is a handy article on the topic from carinsurance.com: https://www.carinsurance.com/Articles/diminished-value-claim.aspx

Edit: Here is a guide that can help with state regulations on Diminished Value. http://www.autoloss.com/Diminished-Value/State-Laws-Related-to-Diminished-Value/#.WrmflYFlAwA
