    My brain broke

    Posted: 04 Mar 2018 02:41 PM PST

Middle of tax season. Panic attacks every day. I left work Friday, didn't come in Saturday, left after a couple hours Sunday. I can't go in on Monday. I haven't left bed in hours. Im crying and don't know what to do. This happened last tax season at my last firm too. God how could I let this happen again? I'm going to lose my job. I don't know what to do.

ACCT LifeProTip: If you join the military reserves, see if your unit can schedule your mandatory annual training during busy season. That way you miss out on busy season while you get to play "All American Badass" in the reserves.

    Posted: 04 Mar 2018 06:09 AM PST

Had a buddy who joined the marine reserves and was working b4. Got hired at B4, did 1 busy season and wasn't about that life. He wanted to do 3 years in b4.

He joined the reserves. Was gone for 6 months for boot camp and training (missed busy season). The following year, he volunteered for an assignment where he would be gone for 45 days during busy season, missed it again.

Your job is protected when you are called to active duty. So he effectively did 3 years at B4 on his resume, but suffered only one busy season.

    Financial Reporting of Cryptocurrency (GAAP)

    Posted: 04 Mar 2018 03:23 PM PST

Any auditors out there have insights on the reporting implications of cryptocurrencies? Working through this with one of my clients now, and they're leaning towards classification as an investment on the balance sheet (Available-for-sale). I've seen some non-authoritative guidance published that lists several other options (inventories, intangibles, etc. - all IFRS articles).

[Int 2 HW] Can anyone help out? What's hard is my professor teaches us the easy question about impairment that's in the textbook, then when it comes to the homework it's just hard since she only touched upon the easy textbook example which doesn't help in this case.

Which industry do you find to be the easiest/least stressful to audit?

    Posted: 04 Mar 2018 05:59 PM PST

Wondering what your takes are? I know during busy season, there's no "easy" aspect, but I know in my short experience, private equity was a cake walk vs other industry engagements I've been on. I was actually thinking of trying to make my way into financial institutions, but have no idea what those entail, considering they're heavily regulated.

My boss has a “not registered” status on the NY CPA lookup website. Will the state board allow him to sign off on my hours for the CPA work experience requirement?

    Posted: 04 Mar 2018 04:28 PM PST

thanks for any insight! I believe he just has not keep his license up to date. He would be signing off on my work experience requirement for the state of Florida which is where I applied

    Joke from my accounting textbook

    Posted: 04 Mar 2018 04:58 AM PST

"A delicatessen store owner, who migrated from Italy, kept his accounts payable in an excercise book, account receivable on a note pad, and cash in a shoe box. His daughter, having just completed a bachelor's degree in Accounting, questioned her father: 'I don't understand how you can run your business this way. How do you know what your profits are?'

'Well', the father replied, 'when I got off the boat 40 years ago, I had nothing but the pants I was wearing. Today your brother is a doctor, your sister is a school teacher and you are a qualified accountant. Your mother and I have a luxury car, a well-furnished house and a holiday home. We have a good business, and everything is paid for. So, you add all that together, subtract the cost of the pants, and there's your profit."

Accounting is not so dry after all.

Big 4 compensation around the world. Overtime, after hours etc.

    Posted: 04 Mar 2018 12:33 PM PST

Hi guys, just wondering if there are huge differences in compensation between countries (Mostly meaning overtime / after hours). In my country (Scandinavia), we get no overtime pay for anything, no after hours compensation either. It's considered seasonal work and as a result we don't get fuckall, it just goes in the bank to be used as time off usually, or compensation at the base rate)

The upside of that is no one cares where you do the work (a lot of remote work), and when you do it (you can work late into the night because all you get is the base rate anyway..).

Yeah, so freedom is nice but I hear the fuckers in Sweden already get compensated a little differently. Rest of the world?

Big 4 tax vs audit busy seasons and off seasons - not a shitpost

    Posted: 04 Mar 2018 11:40 AM PST

As an audit intern, I have started to learn that audit has your busy season, but that depending on the year-ends of your clients, your busy season can be well extended.

I'm curious for all you big 4 tax professionals out there: what are your busy seasons like? Do they ever get extended? If so, why? Do you have multiple busy seasons? Etc.

Can/should I negotiate my raise every year?

    Posted: 04 Mar 2018 06:39 PM PST

I know that negotiating starting salary isn't really possible, but should I attempt to negotiate my raise and bonus after the first year? Have any of you had success doing it?

Edit: I'm asking about public accounting

Want to switch from accounting to corporate finance, possible?

    Posted: 04 Mar 2018 05:33 PM PST

Have 150 credits, accounting degree, pondering the idea of studying for the CPA, had an corporate accounting role for the first 3 years out of college, then a year ago switched to a new company where half my job is accounting and half is finance (fp&a, budgeting, forecasting, comparing actual to budget etc). I have enjoyed the finance side so much that I now want to pursue a career in it. How can/should I go about this? My degree is in accounting with minimal finance courses, should I pursue an MS in Finance at night? Would an MBA be relevant? Keep studying for the CPA? My concern is down the line trying to get a job at a large company in a strictly fp&a role. What would be the best route to take to achieve this?

Worried my school isn’t preparing me

    Posted: 04 Mar 2018 04:16 PM PST

So I go to an average state school. We have two big 4s that recruit at our school. Honestly I've gotten As in financial and managerial accounting. Intermediate 1+2 was stupid easy, all our tests were taken on the computer and were open book/note... they are timed so you get like 1 minute a question but still.

I'm worried I'm going to struggle in the real world. Is there something I can do to better prepare myself?

Edit: I do want to note that I still have to study a lot and spend a good amount on the class but it doesn't seem like it's half as bad as some other schools.

Senior Risk Advisory Salary Question - Moving from Houston to Chicago

    Posted: 04 Mar 2018 09:57 PM PST

Applied and got an interview for senior Risk Advisory (IT/Internal Audit) position at B4. I'm moving from Houston to Chicago. Moving from industry to public accounting as well. What salary should I ask for?

    • I've looked at glassdoor, but there are so many different salaries provided under advisory/assurance and massive ranges from 65-100k that I'm not sure what is a correct answer to give.

    • I was thinking about saying 70 or 75k (is that reasonable or should I go higher/lower).

Having a hard time getting an internship?

    Posted: 04 Mar 2018 02:15 PM PST

Well I am a senior accounting student about to get my bachelor's next year. I'm having a hard time getting an internship in accounting. I paid for a professional makeover of my resume, cover letter, and have been applying to tons of internship positions via my schools website and also other sites like indeed, etc. So far I haven't gotten any responses. I've been networking with individuals I meet through Beta Alpha Psi that come in for question and answering sessions and follow up with them on Linkedin etc. So far, no luck. I am running out of patience with not being able to land an internship since I've been trying to get one for so long. Any advice?

Stats: Accounting GPA 4.0 Business GPA 3.88 Related experience: None, besides 2 months of VITA.

Has anyone ever been denied a job due to credit report?

I noticed on a background check request a potential employer sent me mentions they also will check credit. Has anyone ever been denied a position because of the credit check? I'm not worried about mine, but merely curious.
