LPT: If your spreadsheet is running slow, delete the named ranges that get imported from PBCs

    Posted: 06 Mar 2018 04:50 PM PST

go to "Formulas" -> "name manager" and you will see about 10,000 lines of junk that your client uses in their macros. delete them. Be sure to turn off automatic calculations, or this will take a very long time (hours).

Even with automatic calcs off, it may take up to 30 minutes for excel to finish running. It is very worth it, however, so let it run on your lunch break.

How did you land your first accounting job? What did it pay?

    Posted: 06 Mar 2018 07:10 PM PST

    Rush season red pill.

    Posted: 06 Mar 2018 06:00 PM PST

I work in Big 4. All the needless stress could have killed me or can still kill me for various reasons. Work 16 hour shifts for weeks/months just to show managers/partners you give that "extra mile", otherwise you are not "cut" for the job.

Fuck all this. I don't want to make it to partner or manager, and this has been my worst rush season. I won't do this shit for >5 more years just to get a small chance of getting promoted to manager.

From now on, I'll work 10 hours max, 12 if it is something serious. Once I get my CPA I'll start applying to something comfy, with less stress and less fucks to give I'll finally "kick" my drug habbit. The firm needs me more right now than I need them, they haven't fired me knowing I am a loony with drug problems, the partner keeps saying "this will be our most profitable engagement next year, currently in our top 3". Fuck you, I won't ever stay till 1AM again. You make my yearly salary in a month and more (third world). You got a happy wife and kids and big salary and I basically live locked up in a black room drinking and doing drugs all day long because I can't handle the hardships of life.

If I get fired my resumee looks half decent (at 24, 2 years acconting clerk, 2.5 audit staff, 1.5 senior, speak 2 languages fluently). If I don't get fired I'll eventually leave, I just don't care anymore.

If you're still hoping to get that manager promotion one day and you're still willing to bend backwards for it, I feel bad for you. Just look at the divorce/single rate of managers and partners in Big 4. Look how late managers and partners stay. I'd quit right now if I had my CPA but gotta wait 3-5 months for it.

PLEASE HELP. Accept promotion or leave company?

    Posted: 06 Mar 2018 03:37 PM PST

Thanks for your time and input in advance.

I graduated with my Bachelor's degree in Accounting 1.5 years ago and i accepted a billing associate position right after i graduated. I currently get paid $17.50/hour. The person who is doing AR is leaving and i was offered her position with an increase to $18/hour. Is this a good promotion to accept or is it better to leave the company and look for a different job? One more question, I told my manager i would like my job title to have the word 'analyst' on it because i love the analytical portion. What job titles should i suggest to my manager? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again guys.

Why is a CPA so important?

    Posted: 06 Mar 2018 10:02 AM PST

I always thought it was like passing the bar for a Lawyer but you can practice Accountancy without a CPA. What makes a CPA so special? Can they do things that a normal Accountant with no CPA can?

Should initiate a Snapshot to an asshole Senior on <80hr engagement? Senior is hounding me to send him one. Quitting soon.

    Posted: 06 Mar 2018 09:02 PM PST

Using a nuke account to avoid recognition on my main account. Basically the last client I was on was an absolute shitshow. The senior took an immediate disliking to me and would lie about me to the manager to cover his own ass. I have always received great feedback on all my other Audit engagements. The engagement recently ended and he has been HOUNDING me to send him a snapshot, like he just can't wait to give me a bad review.

Today I got an email from the Sr. Manager demanding that I send a snapshot before day end tomorrow. No one has ever been this demanding about Snapshots in the past. Problem is, I will be leaving the company soon, I'm just waiting for the other company to finalize the paperwork so I'm all squared away before I put in my 2 weeks. I don't want a crappy review in my permanent file.

I read the snapshot guidelines and there is nothing that states I need to send a snapshot for such a short stint. I already have 89% of my hours covered by snapshots. How do I stall until I can put in my 2 weeks? I need to respond to his email with something. Should I mention the guidelines?

FAR on Saturday. Not prepared. Husband decided to move in with his new girlfriend over the weekend.

    Posted: 06 Mar 2018 12:16 PM PST

I'm trying to think of a time when I've been more overwhelmed than this. I want to tell myself "it's just a test, retake it if you need to", but at the same time I'm saying "now you can't afford to take it again and it's your last one".

I'm using Becker and maybe get 50% of the MCQ right. Do I stand a chance? I was thinking of reviewing the SIM topics that have been listed. Is this enough?

    PwC PCS exit opportunities (audit)

    Posted: 06 Mar 2018 08:49 PM PST

Okay, I know there have been a ton of questions about working in PCS and especially PwC PCS. My question is not specifically concerning the hours, wages, nature of work, but rather the exit opportunities arising from working in PwC PCS and what the opportunities are to transfer within the firm to auditing public companies. I hear from others that auditing private clients is not as good as public companies due to lack of SEC experience. However, I see it in the way that as long as one is in Big 4, the reputation and experience is good nonetheless. Is this true? What are the exit opportunities for someone in PwC PCS who would like to keep doors open in terms of exiting into public and/or private industry positions? What are pros and cons of working in PCS from this perspective?

Sorry for the long question. I appreciate the feedback however!

Thoughts on applying for an industry job while still a student? (Late 20s, Switching careers)

    Posted: 06 Mar 2018 08:34 PM PST

I'm 27, I've been working as a manager for a retailer for about 5 years now. It's given me very good experience as it's a well reputed company, very fast pace and aggressive work environment, and quite decent compensation as far as industry standards are concerned. However it's not a career I have my heart in and started back up school part time last year (had an associates in IT already) for an accounting BA. I do want to acquire CPA title, but would prefer to avoid public, or at least big4. I have as strong an ethic as anyone, but life outside work is important to me too.

I have a family member who has worked for a Fortune500 company for a long time, not in accounting though, who has been telling me to consider applying for jobs there. I've been told they offer tuition reimbursement and treat employees fairly well. There is an associate level opening on the financial reporting team that does not require experience, but lists a bachelors degree in accounting/finance as a qualification. Has anyone applied for a position like this while still schooling? I guess this is more directed at people who were taking night classes to work towards your degree. I'm wondering if it's possible or if I'm getting ahead of myself. Really would love to hear from people who had any similar situations.

If it's pertinent, so far for accounting specific classes I've taken financial, managerial, intermediate 1, and tax 1. Currently have a 4.0 GPA

    Career alternatives other than accounting?

    Posted: 06 Mar 2018 06:39 PM PST

So I graduated with a bachelors degree back in 2013 and am currently working towards my CPA designation. I will be writing the final exam next year.

In case I fail or give up half way through, I wanted to know what other careers there are? Has anyone ever switched from Accounting to something else and still be able to make as much as a CPA?

I just don't know if accounting is my thing :(

Tips for a sophomore accounting major

    Posted: 06 Mar 2018 06:33 PM PST

Hey guys and gals, hope you all are having a wonderful day and not too down in the dumps from busy season. I am a sophomore accounting major here in the USA and I was wondering if anyone would like to share a helpful tip or piece of advice that you wished someone had told you. Whether it was about the interview process, the actual job you are in, or anything mildly accounting related.

For some background, I have a 3.25 GPA and a 3.5 Major GPA, and my current plan is to go into audit when I graduate. Thanks in advance to anyone who stumbles on this/responds!
